Paul Would be Honored to be Romney Veep

Not that Paul, the younger one.

From WFPL:

Kentucky’s junior senator says it would be an honor to be considered as a possible running mate for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Senator Rand Paul first discussed his higher aspirations at the beginning of this year. He said he wouldn’t close the door on being a Vice Presidential candidate. After a speech in Louisville today, Paul held that door firmly open, saying he wants to be part of the national debate.

Given the buddy-buddy relationship between Romney and the elder Paul, this seems like a possibility should Romney get the nomination.

Romney said he wanted a governor as VP.

  2. Micah Says:

If we can get the Ron Paul army on board i think we beat Obama. Take away the college vote in favor. Let’s do this!!!

    Romney/Paul 4 the win!!!

  3. eric Says:

Mitt Romney / Rand Paul 2012

  4. barktwiggs Says:

Well, younger Paul has the nuance on the Foreign Policy unlike pops. Though it will be interesting to see who if anyone will make a deal with Romney first like Romney did with McCain last go-around. Probably won’t be until April or May when the delegate counts are stacked higher.

  5. asparagus Says:

Fools gold. They will abandon us for Obama just like women who were supposedly going to come on board thanks to Palin (lol). Speak to a Ron Paul supporter you know. Ask them if they prefer Obama or Romney with Rand Paul as VP. These Paul people do not think or vote strategically. Romney is the man who wants to bust them for weed. They will never turn out for Romney the way they would turn out for Paul. Shore conservatives up with Rubio and run a typical Rove campaign.

  6. alaska jake Says:

Interesting. . .Santorum’s people suspect Romney and Papa Paul made a deal already. (See Drudge).

I really don’t know many details about Paul the Younger but I like that he’s a much more sane and rational version of his dad, from what I can tell.

  7. krissmith777 Says:

With Rand Paul, I’d be gung-ho for the ticket.

  8. Reginald from texas Says:

I think Santy and Obama have a deal in place. They run very similar stack ads, and Obama never attacks Santy.

  9. Doug NYC GOP Says:

I think Anthony Dalke floated this idea a few weeks ago.

I think this idea has a lot of potential.

Romney would shore up the Tea Pary and bring in those energetic Ron Paul Libertarians.

It’s a bold move and not “Establishment” by any means.

Rand would crush Biden in a veep debate and he makes a good attack dog.
I think he’s a Doctor as well so he can speak about HC with fluency and he is not as isolationist as Pop.

Kinda explains the kinship between the two camps this season.

  10. alaska jake Says:

Being from Kentucky would he appeal to the South? Do they see him as one of their own?

  11. Reginald from texas Says:

The Paulson and Romneys are friends and get together with some frequency

  12. Teemu Says:

Kentucky governor is Democrat, Kentucky is one of those 34 where there will not be special election when senatorial spot needs to be filled, but the governor nominates the replacement, who is in there until the next congressional election. So the Democrat governor could nominate a Democrat at his place until 2014 election.

  13. MED Says:

Rand Paul would definitely be one of my top three picks for BP along with a military man like McDonnell or a popular Latino like Marco Rubio. Contrary to what #5 said, many Paul supporters would rather have one of their voices within the government rather than not at all. As for #10, I’m a southern gal and yes, we would likely see Rand as one of our own. The fact that he can get some Papa Paul supporters on board along with Southern voters is extremely advantageous.

  14. criggs Says:

The Southern angle doesn’t impress me at all. The South is voting Republican regardless, so the Rand Paul pick is pointless from that perspective.

  15. MED Says:

14- The South is not fond of Romney. There are few exceptions like myself, however, having a southerner on a ticket will raise Romney’s likability in our region. We Republicans as a whole don’t want to see our GOP candidate as a weak one who can’t even make the Red South have a decent turn out. Tactically it wouldn’t matter but strategically it would as it would be beneficial for the party. We need a strong base after these very dividing primary elections.

  16. criggs Says:

    15. “The South is not fond of Romney.”

Right, and they love Obama, uh-huh. Sorry, doesn’t work. The South will vote for a potted plant over Obama. The Paul pick is a waste of resources.

  17. MED Says:

16- Wrong. They are not fond of Romney and do NOT love Obama. I made the point that voter turnout would not be as high since my people unfortunately, for the most part, see him as a liberal and also have a distaste for Mormonism. Plenty of the bubbas and hardcore evangelicals would rather stay home and get drunk or go bible thumping. My main point? Low voter turnout in the South would not be good for the party and that rallying a strong and important base would be beneficial and uniting for the party. Simple as that.

  18. Ambrose Says:

Was searching for this for my daughter:

    Found this:-

    http://youtu.be/vF3K2JvFcJA

Watched both, my daughter laughed, I cried.

Paul for president, Potato for vp ;)

  19. Heath Says:

Ok so I think we can all agree now that Mittens wins Arizona (12 POINTS) and Michigan (4 POINTS), Newt wins Georgia, and Santy wins Oklahoma.

BUT TELL ME WHO ON EARTH WINS OHIO AND TENNESEE?! Mitt/Rick?

  20. MED Says:

18-Not sure about Ohio but if Romney wins AZ and MI, he will have a great chance at winning Ohio. Santorum may win Tennessee. It has a very high percentage of Evangelicals.

  21. SixMom Says:

Rand Paul would be an interesting choice. I don’t agree with some of dad’s ideologies, but Ron is a dear. Really. Romney would pick up a lot of enthusiasm by partnering with Rand.

Question is? How well will Rand vet? That’s an element that has to be completely scrutinized.

  22. chris Says:

Not going to happen. A freshmab senator with little experence?

Give romney nore credit that that.

  23. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

Rand… I’ve always been averse to the idea. The only time I think it would be a good idea is if it looked like it was necessary.

  24. Machtyn Says:

I don’t think a Romney/Rand Paul ticket would necessarily be a play at Ron’s supporters. I thin Ron would cheerfully try and convince his supporters to vote for Romney. Go back and watch the FL concession speech Paul gave. He put one of his supporters in his place when he tried to boo Romney.

I think have Rand as the VP candidate fills a lot of Romney’s points, spent life in private sector, strong leader, can take over Presidency in 8 years. I’d hate to lose my Senator, but I wouldn’t mind losing him that way. And then, perhaps Rand can finally give us working toilets again!

  25. MarqueG Says:

If Mitt were to pick Rand — something I’d rate highly unlikely — Mitt would definitely cause me to reduce the passion of my distrust in him by maybe, say, 10 to 20 percent. There isn’t much of a reason for me to trust Mitt to stay on target for a small government program that he clearly doesn’t believe in. At least not severely.

  26. MarqueG Says:

BUT TELL ME WHO ON EARTH WINS OHIO AND TENNESEE?!

    The one who screams less.

  27. Killjoy Says:

    New Michigan Poll

    Santorum 37%
    Romney 34%

    basically right where it’s been

    http://www.freep.com/article/20120222/NEWS15/120222050/Santorum-clings-37-34-lead-over-Romney-Michigan-Free-Press-WXYZ-poll-shows

  28. Machtyn Says:

    10. I think Rand Paul would be seen as a Southern Teavangelical. He’s from TX, but has lived as an optometrist in Bowling Green, KY during his adult, professional life. Bowling Green is in the South West corner of KY near TN. He won with a very good margin in KY.

Biden is a wily debater. Rand isn’t bad, but with a bit of training and prep work, he would destroy Biden in a debate.

  29. Boomer Says:

There are plenty of other jobs in an administration other than VP. Besides, I’m not convinced it needs to be that big a deal.

As has been pointed out numerous times, the Pauls and the Romneys are very friendly and anyone who knows the history of Paul and Newt knows there is some real hostility there and clearly Paul has no love for guys like Santorum who claim to be conservative but their voting records are anything but.

Promising Paul a prominent speaking role at the convention, some planks in the party platform, generally giving Paul and his movement a bigger voice in the Republican Party are all things that could be very appealing to Paul. Getting the support of Paul’s army would be huge against Obama.

  30. OHIO JOE Says:

Well, at least the ticket would be balanced.

  31. Watchinitall Says:

    26. pre-debate poll. Bleh.

RomBots are flying high today, but with our typical modesty and serenity.

  32. Killjoy Says:

#30 predictable, the point is this is another poll once again proves that the poll showing Romney slightly leading the other day was an outlier.

  33. Teemu Says:

    New Michigan Poll

The poll started on last Saturday, Romney has done usually worse in weekend polls, it has the highest margin of error of all polls in RCP average, and “very conservative” are at about 30%, still too high.

  34. Riccardo Says:

First of all, Romney’s far too bright and ethical to offer a job to anyone at this time.

Second, the “friendship” between the Romneys and Pauls is not deep-rooted. It began largely during the 08 run, and it’s not like they seek one another out. It’s circumstantial at best. Don’t read too much into this talk.

Thirdly, WE NEED RUBIO or RICE. But the third “R” would be better than some other candidates.

  35. Adam Graham Says:

Ok so I think we can all agree now that Mittens wins Arizona (12 POINTS) and Michigan (4 POINTS),

No we can’t all agree on Michigan.

    #30:

RomBots are flying high today, but with our typical modesty and serenity.

    Forgot the /sarcasm.

  36. Not Your Severely Constipated Daddy Says:

Romney needs Huck as VP. Ask Ron Paul to serve as Secretary of Treasury and audit the FED.

  37. Mark in PA Says:

    26, 31
Bless your heart, killjoy. We’ll see what they look like by this weekend.

    34
No sarcasm. Romney supporters are flying high today, but hopefully most refrain from shoving your face in the mud at this point. After all, if Mitt does indeed become the nominee, I, for one, think we’re going to need each and every vote and voice we can get in order to take down Obama. I hope you eventually support Mitt, however reluctantly.

  38. Mark in PA Says:

If Rand Paul is considered for VP, I think it’ll just be a token shout out. I highly doubt it would become reality when we have so many potential GOP stars with more executive experience. And Rubio’s Senate/Florida/Latino pluses trump Paul’s House/Kentucky/Libertarian pluses.

  39. Mark in PA Says:

    37
Oops, forgot that Rand is a Senator unlike his dad. But I think Mitt’s wants a Governor as VP, and if he doesn’t go with that, it’ll probably be Rubio.

  40. teledude Says:

Ron Paul was a dangerous kook until he became an effective ally to Mitt.

    You guys are so transparent.

Now Santorum is crazy and too extreme, but Ron Paul is a great guy!

    I just have to laugh…

  41. Right Wingnut Says:

    Not going to happen.

  42. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    39

Ron Paul was a dangerous kook until he became an effective ally to Mitt.
    You guys are so transparent.

And Mitt was the best choice in the time after Palin decided against running, and before Newt became viable.

Look, we’re all human beings. To cry foul against us for one thing when everyone does the same thing is a little disingenuous (and human, too btw)

  43. Matt "MWS" Says:

I would be honored to be a VP pick too. I give myself about the same odds as either Paul.

Mitt, who takes the concept of caution to new artistic heights, is not going to be nominating the freshman son of fringe politician.

  44. BC Says:

Rand Paul is great but picking someone younger and with less experience for the VP spot has never worked very well in the past. Romney should fire Pawlenty and invite Rand to be his campaign chairman. Pawlenty is a terrible spokesperson and couldn’t even deliver his home state in the primary.

Chris Christie is probably the best VP candidate available. His recent interviews have been great. He is passionate, articulate and is very effective at tearing Obama apart.

The campaign needs to stay on the offensive. Chris Christie plays well in the northeast and the midwest. A VP candidate from the south would be a defensive play that would add nothing to the ticket. And an evangelical candidate on the VP spot would create a security nightmare for Romney. I’m pretty sure that the VP candidate will be a Catholic.

  45. Mark in PA Says:

    39
Ron Paul is principled, but his foreign policy is still nuts. He’s the only candidate that would seriously make me consider voting for Obama… because Iran getting a nuke cannot be taken lightly. (I’ve never wavered from that.)

Santorum isn’t crazy and extreme. Him and Mitt actually agree on a lot of stuff from what I can tell… but Santorum talks about social issues far too much when the economy is problem #1. His quotes are very problematic for a GE. Mitt will have bumps also, but I think he’s going to be a far stronger GE candidate.

  46. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    43

Has any governor in the nation made an endorsement to a candidate who ultimately won his/her state yet?

  47. Watchinitall Says:

39 tele: This is Adam Graham’s post. Last I looked, he was still refusing to use sing the Hallelujah Chorus at the mention of Mitt’s name. RomBots are just along for the ride here.

Placid, serene observers of all they survey . . . .

  48. Mark in PA Says:

    43
I disagree about TPAW. He’s worked his butt off for Mitt, and I don’t think Mitt would ever throw someone like that out the door. And I do think he was a very competent governor… so I think a cabinet position is in order both for his efforts and his ability to potentially do a good job in a Romney administration.

  49. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Watch,

When I think “RomBot,” the first two words that come to mind are “modesty” and “serenity.”

  50. MarqueG Says:

Placid, serene observers of all they survey . . . .

I see some of your friends are serenely measuring the drapes for the Naval Observatory and surveying the appropriate attire for inaugural bawl. :-D

  51. BC Says:

#45 Pawlenty is not just a governor who made an endorsement. He is the co-chairman of Romney’s national campaign. He appeared on meet the press a few weeks ago and was terrible. Maybe he is a good fit for a cabinet position but as a spokesperson he is terrible.

  52. Mark in PA Says:

    48
When I think of people who use the term “Rombot,” … no, on second thought I’d better not tell you what two words come to my mind. ;)

  53. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Mark,

    Charming and debonair?

  54. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Marque,

    Ooo…. I like that.

  59. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Propitious and sultry.

  60. TexCon Says:

Let’s get real when most RomNots hear the word Rombot they think “Mormon and Brainwashed” just like George Romney.

  61. blue Says:

I see zero chance romney would pick ron or rand paul for veep. I’m sure rand paul probably will run for president someday. Given he is up for re-election in 2016 in KY, who knows if he would skip that race and run if obama gets term 2 or run for 2nd term.

You are right….this is fools gold so-to-speak. But, here are a few points the ignorant on this site, such as the author of this quote, may want to consider:

    1. Romney selecting Rand Paul as VP would have absolutely no bearing on the race from a Paulinista perspective. Ron Paulers are not going to suddenly change their allegiance from a set of ideas to a phony liberal masking as a conservative just because the son of the guy who now represents the ideas they adhere to is selected as a VP candidate. Ron Paul people are not like the rest of you who hold allegiance to a party….ours is to the founding principles of liberty in the Constitution and nothing else.

    2. Our votes are not up for sale, nor are they the GOP’s to calculate where best needed. Choosing Rand Paul as a VP candidate does not mean that Ron Paul’s supporters’ votes are transferrable over to Romney.

    3. Paulinistas do indeed think and vote strategically. We’d rather vote for Obama and tank the election for the GOP as punishment rather than play your pathetic games of politics. Those games are exactly why we are in the position we are in. You gave us McCain last time with that crap. In 2012, no matter how many fruitless attempts to mask Romney as a conservative and sell him to us, we’re not buying. We do our research, we visit sites like votesmart.org. We are political junkies and we know your candidates better than you do.

    4. The weed thing is very insulting….just think about the generalization you’re making. Sure there are some, but not all of us. Guess what? Over there ii the liberal wing of the party, you have pot-smokers too. This is why we’d rather punish the GOP rather than go along to get along…you know…be a “team player” like Ricky. You’ve shown us one thing for certain: although we’re in the same political party with many similar views, we are definitely not on the same team. You’ve pissed us off with insults like this about Ron Paul, a man we deeply admire, and the insults hurled at us. Look in the mirror when you lose.

    5. Run Rubio….I dare ya. With the exception of the brain-dead establishment GOP in Florida, we hate the guy. His record in the state government is horrible. He’s scum and the rest of the country will find out as he takes a larger role in the national stage. Hopefully, we can kick his a$$ out before he does too much damage.

I urge all of you to just think about what you’ve done to the party with your treatment of the Ron Paul candidacy and the supporters. You are responsible for the loss coming in November, and we are glad to help deliver it to you. When you all suffer the humiliation of consecutive losses to an extreme left-winger by nominating tomato cans and abandoning the only section of the party that is growing, you will have no one else to blame. It’s a bittersweet revenge for us…but, it’s the best we can do for now.

    My thoughts exactly.

  65. MED Says:

63-I disagree about Paulinistas not voting for Romney if Rand was VP. Several Ron supporters would rather have one of the 2 in a power of position than not at all. There is a huge debate among them about this and it’s about half in favor and half not. This debate is all over the internet. You all should check it out sometime. It’s like a faction among them going on. However, I think if Ron were to persuade them more during the GE, more would give in to a Mitt/Rand ticket. All Ron supporters I know personally also are crossing their fingers that Ron would become Sec. of Treasury or, Ron or Rand selected as VP.

  66. wateredseedsforJESUS Says:

I am a ron paul supporter…and i will gleefully and whole heartedly support the ticket if Rand Paul is on it. I think there is a chunk of people that will in that situation. But it won’t bring everyone on board. It’s still likely that 5% of the electorate writes in ron paul…but at least they won’t be voting for obama.

  67. John Says:

Ran Paul will be VP but is not this time, there are three super VP that fit Mitt as Mike Huckabee,Christie, and Jeb Bush.
