The pro-life organization Susan B. Anthony List has endorsed Rick Santorum for President. Why this is bigger news is that SBA List has never endorsed a candidate for President in the past. Here’s an excerpt from their presser:
“Among the field of strong pro-life candidates in the GOP primary, one stands out as a proven leader in this great human and civil rights cause of our time. Rick Santorum communicates the vision and has exhibited the strategic and tactical prowess the pro-life movement must have in order to succeed. Women and children deserve his leadership, grounded as it is in affirming the dignity of every person. At this inflection point in the primary process and a tipping point in history on the abortion issue, the Susan B. Anthony List endorses Rick Santorum for the Republican nomination for President,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of SBA List.
“Each one of the candidates in the Republican presidential field have made a commitment to be a pro-life president. However, none of them have the record of consistent leadership that Rick Santorum has demonstrated. At this critical moment in the race, our Board of Directors unanimously decided that we must stand with Rick Santorum, the candidate who throughout his career has stood so strongly for Life,” said Jane Abraham, Chairman of the SBA List Board of Directors.
EDIT 11:59 AM 2/17/12: More on the endorsement. I just received this email from SBA List in my inbox:
Dear Matthew,
Among the field of strong pro-life candidates in the GOP primary, one stands out as a proven leader in this great human and civil rights cause of our time.
Anthony List endorses Rick Santorum for the Republican nomination for President.
Rick Santorum has spent his entire political career aggressively advancing the rights of unborn children. While he was in the U.S. Senate, Santorum led the fight to ban partial-birth abortion and was a co-sponsor of every major piece of pro-life legislation. On the presidential campaign trail, he has spoken eloquently and consistently against President Obama’s attacks on innocent human life.
All the candidates in the Republican presidential field have made a commitment to be a pro-life president, but none of them have the record of consistent leadership that Rick Santorum has demonstrated.
At this pivotal moment in the race, our Board of Directors unanimously decided that we must stand with the candidate who throughout his career has stood so strongly for Life.
It is only through the hard work of each of you, who are members of the SBA List, that we are blessed to have candidates who have made the greatest commitment to Life in the history of Republican presidential politics.
We thank you and ask for your continued prayers and support.
For Life,
Marjorie Dannenfelser
President, Susan B. Anthony List

Why do I have the nasty suspicion that the real Susan B. Anthony would NOT support him?
February 17th, 2012 at 10:40 am
Take two aspirins and call me in the morning.
This is Linsanity.
Give em hell Mitt!

I know that pro-life is a be-all-end-all issue for many hard right conservatives, but can we please understand that the middle doesn’t see things nearly so black and white. They are going to vote according to their pocket books, and that’s why Rick scares the middle quite a bit since all he wants to talk about are social issues.
Not that I think he’s really more pro-life than Mitt (who governed as a full on pro-lifer). But this shouldn’t be the main topic at all.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:43 am
This could be a game changed if it went to Mitt, but this isn’t going to get santorum any new supporters IMO.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:46 am
SBA – A Republican Woman’s organization which helps Pro-Life Republican Women in their political races decides to throw their support to Santorum?
Good day for Rick, very good day.

They seem to not be aware of the dangers of Trillion Dollar Plus deficits for the next several years.
National survival is at stake.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:51 am
Rick the fanatic.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:53 am
7 – He is precious isn’t he? All those years as a career DC politician and he didn’t accomplish one significant thing that is of use to America today. What a wonderful creature of Washington DC.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:57 am
They are going to vote according to their pocket books, and that’s why Rick scares the middle quite a bit since all he wants to talk about are social issues.
I disagree with that comment. You obviously haven’t been listening to him in the debates or on the campaign trail and didn’t bother watching the interview of Santorum on CBS this morning.

Lifers hate Romney, nothing to see here, move along folks.
February 17th, 2012 at 10:59 am
I’d guess that Santorum is the worst poster-boy for the prolife movement still in the race. His position isn’t any different from Gingrich, and the only place they distinguish themselves from Paul & Romney is in recently deciding they’re against the exception for rape and incest.

Conservative Gladiator,
You are fixated on the insider Washington issue I see…………you do know that Mitt would have worked in Washington if he would have won his election in 94 …and he would have become exactly what you are prescribing Santorum to be?.
I do know that Santorum played a role in the Senate when it came to Welfare Reform…..I also know that Santorum is considered a very knowledgeable person when it comes the issue of Iran because of his work the intelligence agency’s when he was the horrible Washington Insider that you describe him.
Romney did achieve Romneycare as Governor (GOP MASS – 39% FOR – 54% AGAINST)……
…….Santorum is looking better and better …..

This gives hope to all flip floppers who have come over to the pro-life side.

I wonder if SBA knew that before they endorsed him. /sarc
February 17th, 2012 at 11:16 am
Wasn’t this the same group that came out with the document last summer that all but Romney and Cain signed? Then when people read it (as Romney and Cain had done), they realized that it was a big problem for the various reasons that both Cain and Romney had sited?
I could be wrong, please correct me if I am.
In any case, the abortion issue is really a moot point with all the candidates. All 4 of them would nominate Conservative judges to SCOTUS. If the Roe-v-Wade issue comes up again, the SCOTUS may or may not change the previous decision. Rarely are previous decisions overturned (even if the current board of judges disagrees with the previous ruling).

It’s called votes. Pro-life women vote.
Santorum critics claim he will eventually have a gender gap. Not with pro-life women he won’t.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:29 am
Santorum making a major announcement today at 2 PM EST in Ohio. Possibly a major endorsement.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:30 am
$50 Romneycare abortions is a high hurdle. I am surprised we have not seen ads counting the number of abortions under Romneycare.
On the Sunday before the primary catholic priests will remind their parishes of the importance of voting their values. That will be a powerful message to the quarter of MI voters who are catholic.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:32 am
#1. You’re absolutely right.
#10 – Lifers have no reason to hate Romney. He is pro-life. He’s just not insane like Santorum, i.e.: no abortion for rape/incest. That’s a position that won’t fly in the General.
February 17th, 2012 at 11:33 am
19 – Stop perpetrating lies. You know that Romney didn’t do the $50 abortion plan in his Mass Health Care. It was the judges. Do you shun all facts? Is that what it takes to get Santorum in office? A shunning of the facts?
February 17th, 2012 at 11:35 am
Smack. Your argument is very weak. I’m sure Santorum dreamed of owning a successful company coming out of college making lots of money in the private sector (he does have an MBA). Instead he went into politics and won. As a result he’s a creature of Washington DC and Romney as a result of losing is a creature of capitalism and free market private enterprise. The argument works both ways. I’ll take the latter everyday as well.
Also it’s too bad we can’t unvote the things that Santorum has done while a career DC politician can we? We can’t go and tell the US government that we didn’t agree with Santorum’s vote to increase the debt ceiling FIVE times can we? The people of Mass have every right to demand a change to the Masscare laws put into place. My guess is that MASS with their DEM governor and DEM demographic wants to make MASScare more liberal than they already have made it. It’s a far cry from conservative proposal Romney brought to the table WITH THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION in the beginning but that is the way of MASS politics. Remember that MASS is about 70% to 80% Dem so your GOP numbers are a bit skewed as well to fit only your argument. Give me the WHOLE Mass number regarding Masscare.
One more thing, when Rick was pushing for Unions in PA do they have a GOP poll that says how many GOP (of AMERICA) wanted Rick to do what he was doing for the people in PA, fighting only for them FOR THE UNIONS? I’m sure the GOP nationally that was FOR RIGHT TO WORK legislation. Oh right, there may be many GOP in PA who are pro-Union so what does that make them compared to the GOP of Mass or the GOP of the country? IS Rick supposed to be looking out for US (America) as a UNITED STATES Senator or is he only supposed to be looking out for his people in PA? I’ll help you he was supposed to be working for AMERICA which is a far different threshold than the one Romney had to his people of MASS as a Governor. Career DC politicians can be confusing and confused. As Teledude says, “I’m here to help”.
Career DC politicians who are out, should stay out. They should go back into private life and try their hand at the real world. They can learn a thing or two about making an honest living and true survival as everyday citizens.

No one who cares what the SBA list says was on the fence anyway. Yawn.
February 17th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
17 Which will have a bigger impact? SBA endorsement or contraception flap? When this contraception flap drives Santorum’s numbers to 15-20 below Obama, it won’t matter how many pro-life women support Santorum, everyone else will abandon him.
February 17th, 2012 at 12:19 pm
Santorum’s rise vs. Romney means, in the end, the GOP nomination’s goin to Palin!!!
(and Palin, having now taken on and beating the GOPE (GOP Establishment), taking on Obama will be duck soup)
PalinPOTUS 12!!!!!!!
(Palin/West even better)
February 17th, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Please, don’t even joke about that.

I understand english isn’t your first language, so I’ll spare you the long, scathing diatribe that tears you into pieces.
Just read my sentence again: “No one WHO CARES about the SBA list WAS ON THE FENCE anyway”
In other words, the followers of the SBA list ALREADY liked Santorum.

Mark PA,
“I know that pro-life is a be-all-end-all issue for many hard right conservatives, but can we please understand that the middle doesn’t see things nearly so black and white. They are going to vote according to their pocket books”
Likewise, many Germans didn’t give a crap what happened to the Jews, as long as the trains ran on time.
February 17th, 2012 at 3:31 pm
Kermit,
What is insane about Rick’s position on abortion?
February 18th, 2012 at 12:28 am

The no abortion even for rape and incest part.
