Almost all the rural stuff is in and Gingrich has a lead of a whopping 170 votes. That doesn’t look safe to me considering Paul’s probably going to run at least a few points ahead of Gingrich in Clark/Washoe.
I’m hoping Romney gets over the 100 delegate mark tonight. In pure numeric terms it doesn’t mean anything, but it’s a great contrast to see Romney in triple delegate digits while the others are all still below 40.
Easily CNN. FOX has some of the most dumbed down coverage. Some of them are good (like Brit Hume and Karl Rove) but a lot of them are just wrong (especially Bill Kristol).
I too am tuning into CNN more this year. I have begun to disdain Fox. They have become so “low brow” in their coverage and in this cycle they have been very biased in favor of Newt—a former employee of course—and they put on some of the most incredible dim wits. They have two good anchors—Shepard Smith and Bill Hemmer who I wish would go to CNN and replace Anderson Cooper.
I like fox but there are two on air folks that drive me bonkers, therefore i refuse to watch whenever they are on and they happen to be on right now. Yuck.

Gergen says that Romney needs to offer a couple of specifics that people can remember. I tend to agree; Romney needs to have a message that people can say “this is what Romney says he’ll do to fix the economy”.
So what do we hear from Newt tonight? A bunch of “pious baloney” about running a positive campaign, followed by a bunch of nastiness about Mitt being negative? And then I bet he says he will skip February and focus on Super Tuesday states, which is probably smart looking at how far he fell in the latest Georgia poll.
I dislike/like the candidates fairly evenly. But I prefer Fox for not using five Dems to comment every time on a Repub policy line or candidate. I find it annoying that Fox does it the other way around, though, so I prefer my own web research over either, and don’t find TV all that compelling.

Also re Kerry, he didn’t have to fight nearly as hard for his party’s nomination as Romney has had to. On Fox News, somebody pointed out that Mitt lost some counties today that he had won in 2008 — Esmeralda and Mineral Counties.
Yeah, big deal. He lost Mineral by 2 votes. He lost Esmeralda by 1 vote. The total vote for all 4 candidates in both counties combined was 151 people. These counties are virtually uninhabited.

#389: Here’s what’s making me crazy from Victor Davis Hanson:
Gingrich should carefully play a tape of his post–Nevada caucus performance, and then he would quickly grasp that it was little more than a litany of excuses, whining, and accusations — characterized by stream-of-conscious confessionals and rambling repetitions. And, I think, will hurt him more than anything yet in the campaign.
Hanson, no dummy acts like Gingrich could “quickly grasp” anything by listening to his tape. Newt is too far gone to understand anything of what he’s doing and saying. His anger over Mitt has overwhelmed his cerebral cortex and he is beyond making sense or see himself in anything but a perfect light.
It’s making ME nuts that people still act like Newt is a normal and viable candidate who just need some advice. Newt needs the men in the little white coats. And throw in an exorcist for good measure.
Why can’t people who should know better not getting it with Newt?
I just read Newt’s statement on how Nevada has a lot of Mormons in it, thus guaranteeing Romney’s victory. Nevada is only 11% Mormon, so how does that explain why 74% of caucus-goers did not vote for him.
Actually NV is only about 7% Mormon and no doubt a bunch of those are kids. Others are parents who have to stay home with the kids on a Saturday and cannot caucus, which takes 1 1/2 hours rather than just running in to the polls to vote–or mailing in a vote.
They say that about 22% of the actual caucus goers are Mormon though; Mitt got 90-something support from the Mormons. He got 66% of the Catholics and over 50% of the evangelicals. Even if NO Mormons had voted, Mitt still would have won.

397 – Exactly. It is mind-boggling to here people say Mitt was unfair for exposing Newt’s records. Newt viciously calls him a liar on a daily basis, and yet Newt has yet to point to a single lie.
The fact that the media doesn’t call him on this BS is more maddening than Newt saying it in the first place.
Given the utterly stunning performance of Newt tonight, where are his supporters? Where’s Tele, Smack, Harold/Craig, Nancy, etc. I’d love to hear a Newtist’s take on his press conference.
Perhaps Newt is crazy like a fox. He was so unhinged that he has perhaps stolen the thunder from another big night for Romney. I suspect in the morning the words “Romney, win, Nevada” will share headline space with the words “Newt, bizzare, press conference” and for that feat perhaps Newt deserves credit but I’d love to hear how Newt’s supporters see it.
391. One reason might be cost. My state of WA is in a budget crisis and normally holds primaries. This year, they’re switching to a caucus to save a projected $10 million.
Newt is having a nervous breakdown before our eyes. That has to be one of the most disgusting Primary press conferences in my lifetime. The “Mormon” comment was especially sickening.
I’m thinking the best thing for Romney is to just start the general election campaign and ignore Newt, Romney can’t be dealing with him until the convention. It’s clear Newt knows he’s going to lose, he’s just about maximizing damage to Romney’s chances.
I know it’s delusional, but I’m hoping some of Newt’s “life lines” like Rush and Hannity will finally come to realize that this has gone on long enough and will turn on him. It looks like Newt’s main donor, Adelson, is already talking to Mitt Romney.
Seriously, what the heck is wrong with the Clark County Republican Party? Did they forget how to count or something? They only had one caucus in the evening; all the others were earlier in the day. Yet most of their results are not in yet.
Are they still counting, or did everybody just pack it in until tomorrow?
Something like, “Whew, finally got that after dark causus meeting wrapped up and the folks out the door! OK, since Romney’s already won this thing, let’s just head home and I’ll see you folks in the morning for the count.”
@315: C’mon man, you’re at least as much of a political junkie as I am. You surely know as well as I do that Paul’s position on Israel is the strongest of the candidates, by a very large margin. A couple of refreshers: Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before Congress last year, and advocated that Israel be treated exactly as Paul has been saying he wants to treat Israel. Independent, self-reliant, and autonomous. The video isn’t hard to find on youtube if you’d care to watch it.
Paul is the only candidate who proposes cutting the foreign aid spending in the region. Since we give more money to the countries surrounding Israel than we do TO Israel, this has the effect of bolstering Israel in relation to it’s neighbors. No other candidate weighs in with any detail, so it’s safe to assume that intend to continue the practice of paying the neighbors of Israel regardless of their hostile actions towards the country.
So yeah, foreign aid is what is fueling and paying for the violence. If you were having trouble putting food on the table for your family, and you knew that by sitting in a prison cell for a few years your family would recive a very nice paycheck that would pay all the bills and then some, would you want to sit in that cell, or would you prefer to watch your family go hungry? I’m sure many people would find that an easy choice to make.
It’s only surprising to me when Jewish people choose to support any OTHER candidate.
But Heath, Clark Co. has only reported for 50.4% of precints and Mitt is at 57.4% in the country with 5,133 votes so far, so he could well get another 5,000 votes by the time they are done counting. That will surly boost his statewide percentage, which is at 47.6% right now…
If you do a linear projection and assume that CNN’s 71% currently in estimate is right, I get Mitt finishing up at 50.442. So I think Mitt’s still quite likely to finish over 50%. Unfortunately, all the news coverage is going to occur when he’s below 50%.
I posted results from several precincts from Clark County. Romney was winning HUGE in Clark County when I saw some of the results. A few precincts in the Summerlin area had Romney at 80%. I do believe Romney will make it over the 50% mark.
In 2008, when Romney won by almost 20 points in Minnesota, he was underpolled by like 25 points, so being even isn’t that bad.
In 2008 Romney was 3rd in polls in Minnesota, but won the caucuses clearly. Relatively to population other caucuses tend to have at least 3 to 4 times lower turnout than Iowa caucuses, even if the race is still competitive, which makes them pretty hard to poll.
In 2008 Nevada caucuses the best poll got Romney’s victory margin over 22 points lower, RCP Nevada average was off by over 32 points.
The best Colorado caucus poll underpolled Romney’s victory margin by 22 points.

The commentators on TV seem to think Mitt’s the nominee already, so all they do is talk about how Obama is going to beat him.

Almost all the rural stuff is in and Gingrich has a lead of a whopping 170 votes. That doesn’t look safe to me considering Paul’s probably going to run at least a few points ahead of Gingrich in Clark/Washoe.

I too am tuning into CNN more this year. I have begun to disdain Fox. They have become so “low brow” in their coverage and in this cycle they have been very biased in favor of Newt—a former employee of course—and they put on some of the most incredible dim wits. They have two good anchors—Shepard Smith and Bill Hemmer who I wish would go to CNN and replace Anderson Cooper.

I dislike/like the candidates fairly evenly. But I prefer Fox for not using five Dems to comment every time on a Repub policy line or candidate. I find it annoying that Fox does it the other way around, though, so I prefer my own web research over either, and don’t find TV all that compelling.

Mitt’s doing pretty well in his speech right now. But the full-on media assaults on him and the O-campaign have not even begun yet.
Once they do, Mitt will sadly lose. He has already delivered more Kerry-type lines (“I voted for it before I voted against it”) than anyone in the O camp could have hoped for. So even if unemployment stats rise again, Mitt has a bigger challenge — his awful political skill — than anyone in decades.

Also re Kerry, he didn’t have to fight nearly as hard for his party’s nomination as Romney has had to. Kerry essentially stood back and let Dean and Gephardt destroy each other and he came in and picked up the pieces. Romney’s had to overcome a lot more hostility and suspicions in his own party just to get this far. That toughens up a candidate and a campaign.

A large part of me agrees with you. I’ve been, to myself, analogizing it to hearts. Romney’s playing hearts and has discovered he’s won the first 7 hearts and holds the queen of spades. Does he try to shoot the moon? Right now, he has a real chance of pinching Newt out of existence- just eviscerating him such that everything he’s ever said about Romney, and every attack he’s ever made, will be henceforth deemed crockery. That could be a pretty darn good inoculation. Obama: You hate the poor. Mitt: That’s what Newt said and, as you can see, that guy practically belongs in a sanitarium.
Alternatively, if he lets Gingrich escape, then he’s stuck with 7 hearts and maybe a few more as the hand progresses. Not good. Hard to mount a comeback after accumulating so many points.

Romney needs to marginalized Newt by starting a full fledged campaign against Obama. Try to get the White House to engage in a back and forth dialogue with him. That will get tons of coverage and drown out any of the nonsense Newt is spouting.

Turnout is down so far in Nevada from 2008, Washoe County (Reno) is off pretty significantly.
That’s bad news for the GOP considering:
1) In 2008 everyone but Romney and Paul ignored the state.
2) Delegates weren’t tied to the 2008 caucus.
It indicates some angst about the field.

Look at the race section… 90% white. And Mitt gets 57% of the white vote… it is going to be much higher by morning.
Clark country which is about 50% of the vote went for Mitt 63% and it isn’t counted at all.
So if CNN didn’t blow it with the exit polls… Mitt should be well above 50%.

On Fox News, somebody pointed out that Mitt lost some counties today that he had won in 2008 — Esmeralda and Mineral Counties.
Yeah, big deal. He lost Mineral by 2 votes. He lost Esmeralda by 1 vote. The total vote for all 4 candidates in both counties combined was 151 people. These counties are virtually uninhabited.

More importantly, Obama’s already campaigning against him, and all Gingrich does is run with Obama-like attacks. Why should Romney let Obama have a republican surrogate? Tuesday, I expect Mitt to cruise to victory in Colorado, and by more than 20 points.
In Minnesota, he will win, but not by a large margin…..it might be as low as single digits.
In Missouri, I don’t know for sure what to expect….partially because I don’t know if Mitt cares. He’s not going to be here….there aren’t any delegates at stake…..and he might not spend money. On the other hand, he has dozens of endorsements by the creme de la creme. So, if I had to guess, I’d guess Mitt.

Hanson, no dummy acts like Gingrich could “quickly grasp” anything by listening to his tape. Newt is too far gone to understand anything of what he’s doing and saying. His anger over Mitt has overwhelmed his cerebral cortex and he is beyond making sense or see himself in anything but a perfect light.
It’s making ME nuts that people still act like Newt is a normal and viable candidate who just need some advice. Newt needs the men in the little white coats. And throw in an exorcist for good measure.
Why can’t people who should know better not getting it with Newt?

I just read Newt’s statement on how Nevada has a lot of Mormons in it, thus guaranteeing Romney’s victory. Nevada is only 11% Mormon, so how does that explain why 74% of caucus-goers did not vote for him.

Actually NV is only about 7% Mormon and no doubt a bunch of those are kids. Others are parents who have to stay home with the kids on a Saturday and cannot caucus, which takes 1 1/2 hours rather than just running in to the polls to vote–or mailing in a vote.
They say that about 22% of the actual caucus goers are Mormon though; Mitt got 90-something support from the Mormons. He got 66% of the Catholics and over 50% of the evangelicals. Even if NO Mormons had voted, Mitt still would have won.

Given the utterly stunning performance of Newt tonight, where are his supporters? Where’s Tele, Smack, Harold/Craig, Nancy, etc. I’d love to hear a Newtist’s take on his press conference.
Perhaps Newt is crazy like a fox. He was so unhinged that he has perhaps stolen the thunder from another big night for Romney. I suspect in the morning the words “Romney, win, Nevada” will share headline space with the words “Newt, bizzare, press conference” and for that feat perhaps Newt deserves credit but I’d love to hear how Newt’s supporters see it.

Newt is having a nervous breakdown before our eyes. That has to be one of the most disgusting Primary press conferences in my lifetime. The “Mormon” comment was especially sickening.
I’m thinking the best thing for Romney is to just start the general election campaign and ignore Newt, Romney can’t be dealing with him until the convention. It’s clear Newt knows he’s going to lose, he’s just about maximizing damage to Romney’s chances.
I know it’s delusional, but I’m hoping some of Newt’s “life lines” like Rush and Hannity will finally come to realize that this has gone on long enough and will turn on him. It looks like Newt’s main donor, Adelson, is already talking to Mitt Romney.

@315: C’mon man, you’re at least as much of a political junkie as I am. You surely know as well as I do that Paul’s position on Israel is the strongest of the candidates, by a very large margin. A couple of refreshers: Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before Congress last year, and advocated that Israel be treated exactly as Paul has been saying he wants to treat Israel. Independent, self-reliant, and autonomous. The video isn’t hard to find on youtube if you’d care to watch it.
Paul is the only candidate who proposes cutting the foreign aid spending in the region. Since we give more money to the countries surrounding Israel than we do TO Israel, this has the effect of bolstering Israel in relation to it’s neighbors. No other candidate weighs in with any detail, so it’s safe to assume that intend to continue the practice of paying the neighbors of Israel regardless of their hostile actions towards the country.

I’m sure many people would find that an easy choice to make.
It’s only surprising to me when Jewish people choose to support any OTHER candidate.

But Heath, Clark Co. has only reported for 50.4% of precints and Mitt is at 57.4% in the country with 5,133 votes so far, so he could well get another 5,000 votes by the time they are done counting. That will surly boost his statewide percentage, which is at 47.6% right now…

If you do a linear projection and assume that CNN’s 71% currently in estimate is right, I get Mitt finishing up at 50.442. So I think Mitt’s still quite likely to finish over 50%. Unfortunately, all the news coverage is going to occur when he’s below 50%.

I posted results from several precincts from Clark County. Romney was winning HUGE in Clark County when I saw some of the results. A few precincts in the Summerlin area had Romney at 80%. I do believe Romney will make it over the 50% mark.

In 2008, when Romney won by almost 20 points in Minnesota, he was underpolled by like 25 points, so being even isn’t that bad.
In 2008 Romney was 3rd in polls in Minnesota, but won the caucuses clearly. Relatively to population other caucuses tend to have at least 3 to 4 times lower turnout than Iowa caucuses, even if the race is still competitive, which makes them pretty hard to poll.
In 2008 Nevada caucuses the best poll got Romney’s victory margin over 22 points lower, RCP Nevada average was off by over 32 points.
The best Colorado caucus poll underpolled Romney’s victory margin by 22 points.
