  1. Dave Says:

How humiliating for anyone not named Romney!

  2. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

Gingrich spent $8 million in Q4?

    On what?

  3. Matt Coulter Says:

Has there ever been a more poorly run campaign than that of Jon Huntsman? Honestly, how did anyone (myself included) ever take that guy seriously?

  4. Matthew E. Miller Says:

Gingrich reported he raised 5 million in January. Not sure how much he’s spent but surely, between NH, South Carolina, and Florida at least 3-4 million. So he can’t have more than 4 mil on hand. The folks who are saying, “well, why shouldn’t Gingrich stay in? See how crazy things are this primary season? Anything can happen!” are doing the country and the party a disservice. Any objective evaluation of the situation shows that given that Romney likely has 4 times more money than Gingrich and Santorum combined; given that there are no debates for near a month; given the upcoming calendar heavily favors Romney, this thing is over. But the media can give a candidate life he doesn’t have by playing into absurd narratives.

Imagine what would have happened if the media had, after Iowa and NH, said “huh…there are 3 tickets out of Iowa and 2 out of NH. Newt came in 4th and 5th respectively. Maybe we should stop paying attention to this guy”. I’ll tell you: Santorum would have become the conservative alternative, as he ought to have been, and we’d be looking at a totally different race. One in which the two candidates primaries voters actually most admire/respect were the two finalists. And possibly one in which conservatives angsty at the possibility of a Romney nomination could have prevailed. But instead the media said “hey, anything can happen” and they said “hey, this Newt guy is going NUTS. Shine a camera on him” and we’ve ended up in a ludicrous situation.

  5. Claudia Andersen Says:

This definately states who can manage money and who can’t. Romney belongs in the White House.

  6. Dave Says:

Gingrich has a couple million bucks, but owes half of that, so he only has about a million left. He can still raise money, but I wouldn’t bet Adelson will give him any more.

    He’s not a good risk.

  7. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    3

    Well, Rick Perry.

And by the way, in case anyone is curious, Perry beat Huntsman in Florida, and Cain beat Bachmann.

  8. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

A week from today is actually going to be really interesting.

Three contests in one day. Santorum has a reasonable shot at winning the beauty contest in Missouri.

THAT NIGHT, we may see the final death blow to the Gingrich campaign as it fails to win in CO and MN, and is mentioned to the people as not having made the ballot in MO. And in his wake, if Santorum can win MO, he could immediately become the lasting not-Romney candidate.

  9. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

And following Feb 7, we have Maine on the 11th, and then NO CONTESTS for 17 days.

  10. Jonathan Says:

    #8:

Santorum’s problem is that he just can’t financially compete with Romney. The Governor can blanket the St. Louis and Kansas City media markets with TV ads, probably starring one Jim Talent, and bury Santorum under.

If Santorum loses MO and the rest of the February states, he might well drop out. He’s a lot smarter politically than Newt and far less driven by hatred. Losing Missouri in particular would be a big blow to Santorum because he will get that chance to go one-on-one with Romney.

  11. drob Says:

The magnitude of this win will send important shockwave throughout the republican leadership. Mitt winning by 14% in a state that is a must win in the fall just adds more pressure to the pot. The next seven states before Super Tuesday with a giant tailwind behind Mitt will propel wins in AZ, MI, NV, MO, CO, ME. Santorum will be going against a very big surrogate by the name of Jim Talent and Mitt for a non-binding primary. Mitt solidify the west and hold ME in the north-east. What more all three of the candidates are going to have to generate their own momentum without funds. I just don’t see it. With the governor of TN supporting Mitt already, Mitt will have more steam behind him leaving on GA and OK for the AMR crowd to win. My guess Super Tuesday will be the end if Newt and Rick can even hold out that long.

  12. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    10

Next Tuesday will shape the race. Santorum wins MO, Noot is done and he Santorum gets a second shot.

Mitt wins MO, and Santorum is effectively done, and Noot limps into Super Tuesday like a wounded animal.

  13. Riccardo Says:

with Mitt comfortably in the lead in many of Feb. contests, he’ll spend much of his time out raising dough….for the General Election!

    This here horserace….she’s done.

  14. Common Cents Says:

There’s no telling how much money walks through the door after tonight, the big donors with cash on the sidelines know who the nominee is now going to be.

I’m REALLY hoping Adelson doesn’t give Newt another $5 million, at that point, I have to question if Adelson’s real name is George Soros. Newt needs to be starved of cash.

The only dark horse race left is Missouri, and even then, if Santorum wins, it’s hardly a death blow to Romney, and might even help by destroying Newt even further.

  15. Ci2Eye Says:

    #11 drob,

Newt’s signs proclaiming he has “46 States To Go” left me laughing. Doesn’t he know that for him, he isn’t on the ballot for all of the 46 remaining contests. He only made himself look foolish with that stunt. The news media happily reminded voters upon seeing those signs of his failure to get on the ballot in his home state. Did he really need to have the media remind voters of that. Didn’t someone on his staff consider the very obvious negative implication of those signs.

There is no way Republicans need to send in The Nutty Professor and his merry band of amatuers to do battle with Mr. Obama.

  16. K.G. Says:

A bunch of that states right now are caucus states, requiring money and organization. Caucus states do not favor Newt or Santorum.

  17. K.G. Says:

One would think that the addled Adelson would start playing the odds and get a clue. These guys don’t get megarich by being stupid with their money.

  18. Matt Coulter Says:

    Total cash on hand…

    Romney – $20 million
Everyone else combined (including the dropouts) – $5 million

Seriously. Mitt and the Munchkins it is. That’s pitiful.

  19. Annette Says:

Romney will have secret service protection starting Wednesday. It can be approved based on polls and fundraising.

  20. Jman Says:

Mitt is the man! What a great win for our next President of the United States of America!

  21. Tony Says:

Well I guess this proves Gingrich wrong again. Romney is not buying the election and didn’t buy Florida.

  22. Jerald Says:

Unless Gingrich’s sugardaddy ponies up another $5 million, it looks like Newty is out of gas.

That means that basically only Team Mitt (and maybe Paul) will have the ability to run TV and radio ads going forward.

Newt and Santorum will have to rely on the earned media…Especially Gingrich’s PR Team (FOX News and Talk Radio)…

  23. John Galt Says:

This race is over. newt and rick need to drop out and start working to defeat obama.

  24. Ben Says:

Thanks for putting this chart together Matt. Very Nice.

  25. Ben Says:

Poor Huntsmans got 3 mill in debt! Looks like he is going to need Daddy to bail him out again.

  26. Ben Says:

I am really surprised that Santorum hasn’t got a penny. By being one of the “final four” you would thing that he had some fundraising base.

  27. Ryan60657 Says:

Perry raised $2.9M, yet has $3.76M in cash on hand? Can someone please help me understand how this is possible? Creative Accounting? Crony Capitalism?

  28. mike Says:

6.,14. Maybe someone could explain this to me since I’m not real smart. Assuming this Gingrich guy, Adelson or whatever, has already maxed his donation at $2500, how would donating more money, which would presumably have to go to the SPAC, help Newt and his campaign debt?

  29. aspire Says:

15 You realize somebody had to go into a print shop and order those signs presuming they’d lose Florida. So I wonder how many days did it take to get those signs printed?

  30. aspire Says:

If I were to guess, I’d guess that Gingrich has about 4 mil right now and Romney has about 16 mill. However, Gingrich will raise little from this point on, while Romney will find it easy to raise funds.

  31. Joshua Says:

#27 Ryan: Perry raised $2.9M in the 4th quarter of 2011 alone. But he also had enough funds left over from the previous quarter that he was able to have $3.76M left as of 12/31/11.

  32. Joshua Says:

#27 Ryan: Specifically, Perry had $15.1M cash on hand as of 9/30/11. During the 4th quarter, he raised another $2.9M and spent $14.2M, leaving him with $3.8M as of 12/31/11.

  33. hamaca Says:

So Roemer self-funded to the tune of $5000? Was that for gas to get the Roemer-mobile from state to state? I’m guessing he’s having a great time.
