Poll Analysis: Gallup Daily Tracking Poll

Gallup has released their daily tracking poll for 1/21. Here are the graphics courtesy of Gallup:

Romney recovers a point to rise to 31%. His lead on the surging Gingrich is down to a mere eight points.

Gingrich surges up three points to 23%. That’s ten points in six days. He is leaving the rest of the pack in his dust as he closes in on the struggling Romney.

Paul reaches 14%, his highest mark ever in this poll series. It give him sole possession of third place.

Santorum slips a point to 12%. He is now 2 pts behind Paul, 11 pts behind Gingrich, and nearly thirty points behind Romney. If he can’t head the surging Gingrich, it will be all over for Rick by Florida.

“The Night of the Living Newt!”

it’s a horror story for Mittwitts everywhere

the creature who would not stay dead

    {insert creepy music}

    he lives!

    aaaaaaarrrgggh

  3. Smack1968 Says:

When Rick does gets out of the race his 12% of the vote splits up among the candidates and gives Newt1 a boost that gets him about 3% closer to Mitt.

  4. Smack1968 Says:

    Matt “MWS”

Craig is due….that should scare you.

  5. Matthew Kilburn Says:

So all the talk about Romney “collapsing” yesterday means one of two things:

    1) It was false
    2) Romney had a big day yesterday

Obviously, if #2 is true, it bodes ill for Newt tonight.

  6. Eric Says:

Ron Paul!!!!!! Woot Woot! Breaking that 13% :) Ron Paul 2012!

  7. Conservative Gladiator Says:

Romney is fine. The contrast between Gingrich and Romney couldn’t be any more stark. Let the games begin. UNDERESTIMATE ROMNEY AT YOUR OWN PERIL.

  8. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    Sounds about right.

The thing with supporters of candidates who drop out is, they are easy to move around from one candidate to another depending on who has momentum.

And this is because they don’t like the remaining candidates as much as they liked their preferred candidate.

There is evidence of this in SC. The wild swing upward for Noot in the last few days was mostly among former Perry and Huntsman supporters, along with undecideds.

Santorum’s people will go overwhelmingly for Noot if his momentum continues. If Romney gets the momentum, they will swing wildly to him. And so forth.

  9. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    5

Well, Gingrich had a big day yesterday too.

  10. Conservative Gladiator Says:

The Socon ABR’s made a terrible choice for their champion to go against Romney. Terrible.

Who would be a good choice in a brokered convention?

    Mike Huckabee?
    Tim Pawlenty?
    Bob McDonnell?
    Mitch Daniels?

Yes, SC has “perfect record” of picking eventual R nominee. Big deal–5 cases (’80,’88,’96,’00,’08). Can’t count inc runs for reelect.

  18. Nick in South Bend Says:

12 – I think it would be difficult for TPaw to get chosen in that scenario since the voters sort of rejected him. I think it would be someone who sat it out.

  19. Smack1968 Says:

    Art,

Daniels or Huckabee, since both of them have stayed neutral in this race. TPAW and McDonnell have both taken themselves out of any Brokered Convention Compromise Candidate talk.

  20. Conservative Gladiator Says:

9 – You’d have a big day too if you had a whole station dedicated to you plus 3+ spokespeople taking questions on your behalf all day on the radio and a group of people who care less about conservative principles and values and more about “taking it to the man!” In this case the MSM – who could care less.

  21. Conservative Gladiator Says:

A brokered convention? Stick with your man Gingrich…we’re only three states into this. Let’s see the mettle this little man has. So far the bark has been nice. To some of us he’s an annoying little chihuahua to others he’s a pitt bull. Let’s see what he has to go the distance.

  22. Smack1968 Says:

…..aaaaaaaaaaaand if your main competitor in the race spent the last two debates Stammering and Stuttering his way through the debates.

  23. Art Says:

21, I don’t like Gingrich at all as a candidate. How can Gingrich be politically conservative when he is so personally liberal (when it comes to morality)? I would trust Romney more.

  24. teledude Says:

Does America want a junkyard dog or a French Poodle?

  25. Matthew Kilburn Says:

“Yes, SC has “perfect record” of picking eventual R nominee. Big deal–5 cases (’80,’88,’96,’00,’08). Can’t count inc runs for reelect.”

Sabato has it slightly off….the point is not that South Carolina doesn’t have a streak to be proud of, but in each of those years, there was a little more to the picture:

Candidate A won Iowa, Candidate B won New Hampshire, then South Carolina picked between the two and however won there went on to capture the nomination.

Now, if Romney pulls off the win tonight, that is still going to hold true, all of it. But if Gingrich wins, we’ve already thrown tradition out the window, because nobody has won South Carolina as their first victory. If we can throw out one part of tradition, we can throw out both parts of it.

  26. MarqueG Says:

Mitt’s strategy of trying not to scare off the independents has been rendered useless. The ploy of stepping into the empty moderate vacuum left behind by the McCain campaign is turning out to be a disaster. Newt is almost as socialistic as Obama with his prior statements on issues.

  30. teledude Says:

    28. Marque, I love your posts and you bring a high level of intellectual humor to this site…

except when you are falling in with the pious moralists like Kilburn.

Newt’s “baggage” is OLD news, he’s not like that anymore, it is irrelevant and most people are moving on.

He has made great inroads with the evangelical crowd and the rest of you church ladies need to stop your “I’m better than you” dance and move on as well.

  31. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    30

We aren’t concerned he’ll cheat again, we’re concerned he’s erratic, narcissistic, and overly-indulgent.

Those are very bad qualities in a president.

  32. Conservative Gladiator Says:

Newt is Newtering himself. He will continue to do so with his scorched earth rantings and stratagem. Trust me. By the time the General rolls around IF he were to be the nominee it would be after he has taken every position imaginable left and right to get there. As long as he’s barking at the MSM right? We’ll be fine. Again, the MSM could care less about his rantings. The man is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He has no core. He’s an actor, like Clinton was. A politician through and through with no core. You can say Romney is a terrible politician and I would say – good. Standing next to Gingrich, he is every bit a man of integrity that Newt can ever be even after his less than honest pleas for forgiveness and even less than honest claims of pain over his “experience” that he caused in the first place.

  33. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    “pious moralists like Kilburn.”

I was not aware that either Piety or Morality were available as insults.

Then again, this is coming from the man who supports, for the Republican primary, someone who decries capitalism.

    Up is down, indeed.

  34. greg Says:

what are the main issues come general election? after conventions time. is it down to 2 topics economy unemployment?

  35. John2 Says:

I am concerened Newt will be right back on the couch with Nancy. He has fliiped flopped to socialistic views his whole time in politics. Newt can’t be trusted.

  36. Conservative Gladiator Says:

33 – Exactly and this where conservative values be damned. As long as we have a big barker with no bite.
34 – You would think those were it wouldn’t you. Actually the focus is on getting the MSM and getting the toothless “Big Dog” after ‘em. We can talk about those things later when the toothless Big Dog goes into the General and starts gnawing on Obama shoes.

  37. Bob Hovic Says:

Art (23): “I would trust Romney more.”

LOL. Good one — a textbook example of faint praise.

  38. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    37

The Paul fans are experts on that

  39. John2 Says:

    23. Is right he can’t be trusted. He has flipped even more than the rest of them when it suits him.

  40. MarqueG Says:

Newt’s “baggage” is OLD news, he’s not like that anymore, it is irrelevant and most people are moving on.

It’s old news, but it would be rehashed in ever more lurid detail during a general election campaign. That’s the biggest worry. And don’t tell me that the Newt’s killer debatin’ skillz will drown all that out. There are only three slated for the general election, and none of them are likely to be close to the November vote.

  41. Nostradamus Says:

The spin now for Florida will be a that even a one vote victory by Mitt will be considered especially meaningful as a result of lowered expectaions.

    Give em hell Mitt!

  42. Conservative Gladiator Says:

40 – Yes imagine a huge imposing toothless dog outside the fence barking and barking all day. What will the MSM do? Close the door and keep him out. Beyond that they’ll show us why he’s toothless with every ugly detail from sun up until sun down. Nancy will say, “oops look what fell out of the closet. It’s Gingrich sealed ethics violations.” The MSM will say “why are you dodging by barking so loud? Do we have to put you back outside?” After that Newt will be on suicide alert flailing to no avail. And what will we be left with? Nothing and conservatism starts at square one no longer becoming mainstream. Morality becomes less important and society falls deeper into an Obama nation. The irony would be tragic. The man who “single handedly” brought us Republican majority in the house at one point, takes down conservatism in one fell swoop.

  43. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

I saw the Gallup conclusion yesterday that Romney’s support has ‘Collapsed’. This is simply astounding.

All that money spent to jack Romney up to 40%+, and if Newt wins a convincing win today, the impact of all that Romney money is gone!

This race in my view is the continuation of the Tea Party congressional race in 2010. The conservatives gave the party a huge, overwhelming victory, and the establishment leaders have squandered the energy. This will not stand.

Newt’s statement about a strong partnership with the President and Congress is a big deal and the voters are responding.

This is the race of our lifetimes!!! :)

  44. Paul8148 Says:

Anything I hear from the ground it will be very close tonight. Romney campgin is very help with turnout very high in Columbia and reports that there is a hour long wait in several low country precidents.

  45. Conservative Gladiator Says:

43 – If true about the Tea Party, it’s ironic that they would choose a career Washington politician to lead it right? The insider’s insider. That’s the leader you’re going with. Bring it on! Romney vs. Gingrich. It will be awesome.

  46. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

    ====

and those of you hoping for a brokered convention need to think twice before encouraging the party to commit mass suicide. Split conventions are relics of a bygone era, and there is no more reason to desire them than there is to desire that we go back to using telegraph and pony express.

    Kavon,

You do agree with me correct?…….as much as I would love to see Newt win in MN, there is no way Mitt can lose MN.

In MN we have serious internal problems within the GOP political party that Kavon can write a book about some day. But there is enough there to help push Mitt across the finish line. Paul also has a good base here in MN…just go to any Precint Captain meeting and you will see that…just like in Iowa.

But if Mitt is not keeping hold of his MN support in the Metro GOP areas…well….I guess he could lose.

    But I don’t see it.

“Winning the Future” radio ads are all over the place on “Patriot Radio” 1280 on the dial. But Mitt will outspend Newt 10 to 1 here.

    Wow…..this PPP tweet surprises me.

If anything, he has made it much worse. How can Newt be the one to bring us all together to the same table and hack at problems, as most American Independents want? Again, I am looking at winning the independents’ votes, rather than just the conservatives, for general election.

  68. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

  69. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

Newt actually won a presidential straw poll at a MN GOP state convention a few years back…

  70. Jman Says:

Mitt is the man! Always has been always will be. Stay the course… steady as she goes… keep the faith. Gingrich can only keep the wool over the eyes for so long. Romney is the ONLY one who can defeat Obama.

  71. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

    Here’s the story from 6-5-2006:

On June 2, 2006, delegates of the Minnesota Republican Party voted in a 2008 Presidential “Straw Poll” overwhelmingly in favor of Former Speaker Newt Gingrich. Newt’s supporters included three powerful state politicians in former gubernatorial candidate Brian Sullivan, former state party Chairman Chris Georgacas, and
Taxpayers League of Minnesota President David Strom.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was the easy winner of a straw poll Friday night that tested 2008 presidential candidate support at the Minnesota Republican Party state convention.

Gingrich got about 40 percent of the 540 votes cast, putting him far ahead of Virginia’s Sen. George Allen, who got about 15 percent. Next were Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Arizona Sen. John McCain, each with about 10 percent.
“This shows activists think that Gingrich has the cachet to help set and drive the conservative agenda, just as he did when he led the Republican takeover of the House in 1994,” said Tony Sutton, a Gingrich supporter and secretary-treasurer of the party. “He and Ronald Reagan were the two most important conservatives in the last 30 years.”

Gingrich got 210 votes in the straw poll, or almost 39 percent — more than twice as many as Sen. George Allen of Virginia, who came in second. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was third, followed by McCain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Of those that supported Gingrich, the three listed above are all major Republican figures in Minnesota. Brian Sullivan was a rich businessman who ran for Governor in 2002, until now-Governor Tim Pawlenty defeated him in a very close primary. Georgacas was a young, charismatic State Party Chairman who now works with the conservative thinktank, Center of the American Experiment. Strom is arguably the most powerful, considering his prominent position as the President of the Taxpayers League, which is one of the largest and most successful state-based advocacy organizations in the country.

Gingrich more than doubled the support of his nearest opponent, George Allen. Now this may be just my opinion/bias, but this should be an indication that the party insiders from not only Minnesota, but across the country, are becoming more and more open to the idea of Newt ’08.

    78. Smack, when you’re posting fairly, I really like your contributions. But, when you grab a hold of a pant leg, you’re very annoying. You tug and snap your head back and forth and you growl.

You did it with the tax returns.

You’re doing it now with mitt’s occasional stuttering. In nearly every post, you poking at his stuttering.

Look, if Mitt has a stuttering problem, then I say we should be impressed that he has overcome that disability and had immense success and is even now a viable contender for president.

If he’s a stutterer, then we should be amazed at how eloquent he can be and how he has controlled it under most circumstances.

Are you really the kind of man who would continually make fun of a man for a condition he has little control over?

Were you one of the school kids who made fun of the girl with a mole on her face? Or, the kid in the wheel chair?

I give you your due when you post legitimate critiques and concerns about Mitt and his policies or the way he’s running his campaign.

But, I’m sickened by your constant badgering of a man over his slight and periodic stuttering problem who managed to overcome it by getting this far in life.

  96. MarqueG Says:

Quick! Who did you vote for in the 2008 primary..?

Heh. I think you caught me! Was about to say McCain, but then remembered that I took the Dem ballot so that I could vote for the Bamster. ;-)

In my defense, the GOP nom was already over by the time the primary came to WV, while the Dem nom was wide open. I figured Bam would be easier to defeat than HillBilly. I never imagined the country falling for someone with no executive experience at all. Oh, well. Back to the drawing board.

  97. Matthew Kilburn Says:

“I think he confirmed precisely because he knew he was going to lose”

But why not hold out hope? Candidates have twice dropped out on the day of the debate. What would have been the harm in waiting until tonight to confirm his attendance? “I want to congratulate speaker Gingrich on a victory and a hard-fought contest, and I look forward to sharing the stage again with him Monday night”

Now, he’s locked in. And if that upset does happen (I think the female numbers are off)….its all for nothing.

  99. Matthew Kilburn Says:

“Media mocking him now, calling it childish.”

Get it through your head that the media does not want Mitt to win this contest. The media wants this contest to drag out. They want to be able to make headlines and sell news for longer than the two more weeks they would have if Romney were to win tonight.

Did you notice how they downplayed his Iowa result, even though he spent very little money and had only a handful of paid staff? Did you notice how they downplayed his New Hampshire result, even though he checked every box that he needed to?

THE MEDIA FEARS A LACK OF NEWS TO REPORT. And there is no news in “Mitt Romney, leading national polls by 40 points, scored another victory today in X caucus.”

  100. teledude Says:

Keith, Mitt doesn’t have a problem with stuttering.

he has a problem telling us honestly what he thinks.

His stammering isn’t an uncontrollable physiological condition, it stems from his his own indecision on what to say.

    Good greif

  101. Keith Price Says:

    100. Thank you Dr. Tele, for your informed and professional opinion on Mitt’s condition.

  102. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

    96.

Well, then you are completely forgiven for voting for our first half black president in the history of the United States of America. All 57 of them.

  103. Smack1968 Says:

    Keith Price,

Mitt only stutters and stammers when he is challenged on a question which makes him squirm.

Mitt does not have a natural stutter, so to speak…..he has what you call a “Political Stuttering” problem.

Mitt is very smooth when talking about the economy..which is great.

But Mitt has been stumbling and bumbling in these last two debates which is causing him political electoral issues.

I’m not making fun of people with stuttering problems……..if I have offended anyone here, I apologize.

But in a “RealPoltik” sense…Mitt’s recent stammering is causing him to lose voters.

  104. MarqueG Says:

I don’t think Mitt has a stuttering problem. He just tends to stutter and stammer whenever he’s caught off-guard by a question he hadn’t yet considered, and is trying to think and talk on his feet. Some people stammer in such situations. Some use verbal “um” and “uh” fillers (Obummer). Others use silent pauses.

The media pumped up Newt before South Carolina. Now, if he starts to look to get too far ahead, they’re turn on him. They want Newt to win SC, they want a squeaker in Florida, and they basically want the race to drag out as long as possible. For three reasons:

    1) ALL the media companies, including Fox, want to be able to sell news. The longer the primary, the more news
    2) The liberal media knows that a longer race will hurt our chances in November
    3) Gingrich is routinely trounced by the President, even in red states. He is the new Sarah Palin of polling…which might have something to do with why you like him so much.

…and a story to go with it:

For voters in Mount Pleasant, deciding who to vote for boiled down to one thing: Beating President Obama in the November general election.

Romney, however, could pull independent, moderate and even Democratic voters into his camp, said Jean Anglino, who voted Republican for the first time in her life on Saturday.

“I’d like to see change in Washington, and I believe Romney has the best shot at beating Obama,” Anglino said. “Gingrich has too much baggage, but Romney could persuade independent and moderate voters.”

  122. Smack1968 Says:

I think on average it would hurt Newt more to have bad stroms in the Midland region.

Mitt needs to have a huge lead in Charleston County……Coastal areas of SC (John McCain Country)…to have a shot at winning, or keeping it respectable. If Newt is running close to Mitt in the Coastal Region it’s blowout win for Newt.

  123. MarqueG Says:

The media pumped up Newt before South Carolina.

Um, not quite. The ex-wife’s interview certainly wasn’t in his favor. He simply handled the whole mess in a way that folks believed.

In contrast, Mitt had a spectacularly bad week. He stumbled over the release of his tax forms twice in a row. Twice. And he had no specific answer until the day after the debate when he stated definitively that he’d release them on April 15th. He could have neutralized the issue in the Monday debate, but instead fumbled it.

He also could have made an excellent point about taxes, double taxation, savings, and investments when he explained that he paid an effective rate of 15 percent. That was a missed opportunity rather than a fumble. But still. He’ll need to step up his game to fight back Newt.

Did you know that the one ethic charge that Newt was found guilty of, and in which Newt paid a $300,000 fine, was investigated later by the IRS for 3 years.

    Guess what….

“The IRS found that the donations to Gingrich’s charity were “consistent with its stated exempt purposes,” and Gingrich’s course and course book “were educational in content,” according to The Washington Post in 1999. By then, Gingrich had left office, preferring retirement to a fight over leadership.”

Ooops. Newt shouldn’t tell people this. It’s all about scoring debate points. Don’t ask people to ask about who could do the job. Look at Newt’s track record the last he had a significant executive assignment as Speaker.

  158. teledude Says:

Yes. If he can’t suppress turn out with lies and smears, maybe bad weather will help him. Lord knows he can’t win on his own.

  159. Tim Says:

Another great part of the Nixon comparison; back in 1968 the better man in the race was also a Romney, just like today.

  160. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

Tornadoes are so localized that they won’t affect turnout.

Any camp praying to God for turnout to prevent polling trends from manifesting themself is doomed to be disappointed.

    Newt will win tonight.

Questions are a) what will be the margin and b) where do we go from here?

  161. Firecracker (Romney/Christie) Says:

132 — When Evangelical leaders meet in Texas to discuss backing a single candidate in the midst of Romney’s surge, but only mention Perry, Santorum, and serial adulterer Gingrinch, but not Romney, Tell me religious bigotry has NOTHING to do with it.

Bigotry against Romney over his religion is the same as it was in 2008, only its been covert.

  162. Tim Says:

    155

  163. Smack1968 Says:

  164. Matthew Kilburn Says:

“140 — Nevada was a caucus, not a primary. There’s a huge difference between the two.”

True…..kind of. Turnout is more important in a Caucus, but it can still swing a race.

So maybe that 20% boost Mitt got in NV could be a 4 or 5% boost here.

  165. no newt Says:

newt has yet to even beat Paul

  166. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

As of Jan. 1, 2012 there were 2,722,344 total registered voters in South Carolina, where residents do not register by party. There is no Democratic presidential primary in 2012. The event was canceled.

Anyone know which way SC Democrats would go in this primary if they do Republican ballot? Considering this, won’t be surprised if Newt get the majority, unless the SC voters are too icky about heavy raining weather (bad enough to cause difficulties with driving in some area).

  171. Firecracker (Romney/Christie) Says:

No matter what happens in South Carolina or Florida, Romney will destroy Newt in Nevada. For Mormons, the anti-Mormon bigotry hurled against Romney has become personal and they will come out in droves in Nevada, moreso than they did in 2008.

  172. Smack1968 Says:

I don’t think it is, but can anyone confirm that?

  211. Tim Says:

Newt’s problem is that a conservative insurgent against a Northeastern candidate could usually count on the West for support. But against Mitt, the LDS heavy states like Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah will all go for Mitt, along with the entire Northeast and California.

A Newt win is mathematically impossible.

  212. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

GREENVILLE, South Carolina–Outside Tommy’s Ham House here this morning–where Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich scheduled back-to-back visits–a boisterous crowd of young, fresh-faced supporters was waving Romney signs and chanting, “MITT! MITT! MITT!”

But this wasn’t a grassroots youth movement rooted at the University of South Carolina. No, many of the students cheering on the candidate told BuzzFeed they were actually BYU students and young Mormons from D.C. and Virginia who traveled to the Palmetto State to give their coreligionist’s presidential effort a much-needed jolt of energy.

Kat Wardle, a 23-year-old BYU student who is spending the semester in Washington, D.C., said she and several young Latter-Day Saints have been following Romney around the state, playing the role of cheerleaders at various campaign stops.

    Oh what a glorious day!

Karl Rove’s handpicked candidate with all the money and all the establishment support is about to be 1 for 3 in primary contests after tonight.

Just like he’s one for three in elections in which he’s participated so far.

    How very “electable” of him.

Axelrod has got to be wetting his pants right now. Lol.

    Good to know.

  230. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

223 – You realize that a tornado, a strong one, is going to be q quarter mile wide and travel for a handful of miles.

Even if there are ten tornadoes today, 99.9 percent of South Carolina won’t be impacted by them.

  232. Grandma T Says:

15 years ago today Newt Gingrich became the first speaker of the House to get reprimanded for ethical wrong doing by his colleagues and pay a fine of $300,000. Deadbeat dad, serial adulterer, ethics violations, FIB investigations which one of these redeeming qualities is South Carolina’s are looking for in their nominee?

  233. Jaxemer11 Says:

@3 – Wrong! Santorum voters that like Newt have already switched to him. Use your brain.

  234. SGS Says:

Sojourner – Huh? I know. I used to live in Tornado Corridor. Yes, your likehood of being hit by tornado is low, but still, the danger is real. This does not change the fact that the people would be more likely to stay near to their family and home than going out to vote for something they are not entirely too sure about. Remember, we have a high percentage, relatively, who are willing to change their mind at last minute. I do not expect them to show up at the polls.

  235. Freedom for William Wallace Says:

How many statewide elections has Newt won? (0)

If Newt wins SC, how many primaries will he have won? (1)

How “electable” does that make Newt?

  237. Firecracker (Romney/Christie) Says:

229 — Yes. Because smacking down John King at CNN seem to be the only quality they are looking for.

  238. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

According to http://www.2012presidentialelectionnews.com , Texas is on April 6th I believe. Their calendar was updated a week ago.

  239. Tim Says:

Axelrod is having Dems turnout for Noot in SC.

Why? Noot has a 27% approval rating, the worst in modern primary history.

  240. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

233 – I don’t think any of the Newt supporters are using “electability” as a motivation for support.

  241. Grandma T Says:

Tornado tonight, well most people have voted anyway.

  242. Tim Says:

The southerners don’t care about being smart or good governance, they just want someone to treat Obama like a good ol’ boy. And when Noot berated Juan Williams, it gave the old KKK south a thrill up their legs.

  243. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

231 – Well, look. I’d more concerned with a widespread synoptic event, like say, freezing rain. That would impact several counties.

We’ll just see, I guess. If Newt’s lead is anything like the ARG poll suggests, it won’t matter.

  244. Tim Says:

Smack thinks Noot will still be around in April. Got to laugh at the dead enders sometimes. Their Mormon hatred is a powerful force, I’ll give them that.

I think Newt wants Paul to stay in the race……..Mitt wants Rick to stay in.

I belive you guys have it wrong. Paul hurts Mitt, not Newt…overall..in general political terms.

    IMO.

  253. Metro Says:

Katechon, what makes you confident Mitt wins FL after Newt scores big in SC?

  254. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

Florida is totally in flux right now. Newt had a huge lead, then Mitt led by a good amount (but still less than Newt at his peak).

Winner of FL is going to be very much influenced by the outcome of SC.

If Newt wins by a lot, five points or more, then Mitt is in real trouble in Florida.

  255. John2 Says:

    http://cpctcss.org/

suspect imo as it has Romney doing better with males than females compared to Gingrich. Gingrich will probably be the winner for sure however.

  256. Evangelicals will save Romney Says:

Most evangelicals will not tolerate a serial adulterer.

Evangelicals including Vanderplatts took down Gingrich in Iowa.

And they will take him down nationally given enough time post South Carolina.

The evangelical battleship turns slowly, but once it has turned Gingrich is a goner.

I hope that once evangelicals hand Romney the nomination (indirectly) some of the Romney supporters who have been tough on evangelicals will be more friendly.

Full disclosure I am not evangelical.

  257. John2 Says:

  259. teledude Says:

“Full disclosure I am not evangelical.”

Pretty obvious by how wrong you are.

  260. Sojourner Truth agrees with Chuck Norris Says:

Evangelicals will take a Catholic with a history of infidelity over a rich, isolated Mormon who became pro-life at exactly the time it best bolstered his political fortunes.

It also doesn’t help that Mitt’s grand dad had multiple wives.

It’s just a fact. Love it or hate it.

    And I’m not evangelical either.

  261. SGS Says:

Trying again, bad link in #255.

Here is a SC map showing how well Mitt and Paul did in 2008.

  262. Evangelicals will save Romney Says:

Metro and Katechon the answer re Florida and beyond is that evangelicals will torpedo Gingrich for being a serial adulterer.

There are millions of evangelicals just like Vanderplatts. They will indirectly hand Romney the nomination.

  263. SGS Says:

Finally, CNN out with SC result webpage Still blank, of course, but now we junkies have something we can stare at until something better is shown.

  264. Metro Says:

#259: Then how do you explain what is going on in SC?

  265. SGS Says:

I consider a map good if it shows precinct count in each county, rather than percentage. If you find something like this, let us know (and I’m looking at you, MassConn!)

  266. Tommy Oliver Says:

lol… The Rombots favorite R42012 contributor, DeRoy Murdocke, is on Fox News Channel right now.

  267. Bill Says:

Gingrich is the death of the Tea Party. The Tea Party ruined so many races in Colorado, Delaware, Nevada, Alaska, New York. So many winnable races turned into landslide losses because of the bagger brigade. At least then, they could claim principle. But by choosing Newt, a 30-year Washington insider and lobbyist and two time adulterer, the Tea Party is exposed as a fraud and a joke.

It’s good news for the establishment in 2014 and 2016, the crazies have overplayed their hand and have become self-parody.

  268. Evangelicals will save Romney Says:

I am not saying evangelicals will enthusiastically support Romney either.

By and large they will probably support Santorum but not in enough numbers to give him the nomination.

They will eventually hold their nose and get behind Romney once he is nominated.

Don’t forget Vanderplatts and social conservatives like him who doomed Gingrich in Iowa. There are millions of other social conservatives just like them.

Metro what has happened in South Carolina is the same as what happened in Iowa when Gingrich was ahead there.

Gingrich had big evangelical numbers in Iowa during that period.

But then a number of evangelical leaders in Iowa got on the radio, etc. and said heck no.

But it took several weeks for that to happen in Iowa. There has not been time in South Carolina. But the same thing that happened in Iowa will play itself out nationally over the long run.

  274. SGS Says:

MassCon, thank you! I guess I should check NY Times first.

Newt’s rise is the creation of the right and the left news media joining together with the same message..His support is very weak…Newt hasn’t worked for the support he’s getting. He has no donor’s, organization, or supporters who will stand with him through thick and thin when the vetting begins and his record and character is exposed.

  301. MarqueG Says:

Interesting report. Mitt and his team don’t like the press, and the feeling’s mutual. Newt acts like he hates the press during debates, but actually likes them:

Both Thursday and in numerous debates before, the former House Speaker’s stance suggested a candidate harboring deep bitterness toward the media, a man appalled by the very sight of notebook-carrying scribes.

    The reality is very different.

The same candidate who on Thursday decried “the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media” shows another face to the cadre of reporters who follow his campaign day-to-day. He jokes with them, publicly celebrates their birthdays, teases them about the early hour they are often forced out of bed to cover his events.

It’s not unusual for Gingrich to chat with reporters, off-the-record, in the hotel restaurant at the end of a long day on the campaign trail — and he engages them to a degree that’s unheard of on the other campaigns.

Mitt Romney, for example, doesn’t make small talk with reporters about sports, the news of the day or the food at his events like Gingrich. No one gets close enough.

The contrast between the two couldn’t have been any clearer than Wednesday, when Romney stopped at a BBQ joint to shake hands and approached a family with a basket full of hush puppies. When a Washington Post reporter innocuously asked Romney if he planned to try one, the staff cut him off, insisting it was an off-the-record stop.

When the press tweeted about the incident, angry emails were dispatched from the former Massachusetts governor’s staff to offending reporters.

While Romney won’t take questions outside the safety of controlled press conferences, Gingrich is perfectly comfortable in unscripted situations, content to make small talk while working the public at events.

  308. MarqueG Says:

Men wanna be Newt, Women wanna marry him!

    Um, yeah…

  309. John2 Says:

Newt is probably trying to bang young female reporters on the trail.

  310. John2 Says:

    301. Florida changed things going this early now. Same with Michigan etc.

  311. teledude Says:

OMG! A reporter asked Mitt if he would try a Hush Puppy?

    That bastard!

Well, that’s just how the press will do ya.

  312. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    Big loss for Mitt.

Oh well, he came in 4th in SC in 2008 and he never planned on winning here.

    On to Florida!

  313. teledude Says:

    306. I’m impressed you were able to type that with one hand.

  314. Boomer Says:

    294.

No, I’m not. And here’s another prediction that will prove correct. As soon as the race moves to FL and Romney goes on the offensive instead of letting Newt have a week of debating the media and his numbers stay well behind Romney, you will disappear again rather than having the stones to face up to another loss.

That was a much easier call.

  315. Bill Says:

    301

No one has ever lost both Iowa and NH and won the nomination.

  316. John2 Says:

Florida winner will be the nominee period.

  320. John2 Says:

    310. Forgot Newt’s current wife isnt afflicted yet so maybe he is controlling himself.

  321. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

That DOES make perfect sense. Thanks for the piece.

Newt USES the MSM but treats them like friends. Always has. And do they know it!

Willard, on the other hand is exceedingly awkward, clueless, and short with them. Bad traits for a politician. Probably explains why he is like 6 for 24 in winning various elections throughout his dismal political career.

  322. teledude Says:

  326. teledude Says:

    Lessons from South Carolina today:

Blagoyevich shouldn’t be counted out for 2020
Madoff could return to investment banking . . . South Carolina might be a good place to set up shop.
Sanford shouldn’t have resigned, he should have just moved her from Argentina to the mansion.
South Carolina Republicans want a spokesperson for protecting marriage who has experienced a variety of arrangements.
Grandiose means something different down there.
Indignation and pomposity are the skills most in demand for Presidential candidates, and indicate genuine penitence.

  342. Watchinitall Says:

  344. K.G. Says:

Married women for Newt? Well, why not? He gets married so often.

  345. Bill Says:

This really could be the moment when the GOP becomes the Whigs, and dies off a dismal disgrace.

  346. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    340

    Yes. But Noot wins easily.

  347. Matthew Kilburn Says:

“GOP12 Married women going for Gingrich”

If that holds, then South Carolina truly has, completely, lost its mind.

And one of the things that Romney needs to do if/when he becomes President is support primary reform that will raze what has become an unholy institution to the ground.

  348. Boomer Says:

Excellent. Romney sent Newt an anniversary cake today to celebrate the 15the year anniversary of his ethics rebuke.

Now, at last, Romney is coming out fighting. I can’t wait for Florida.

  349. Watchinitall Says:

    337. I wonder if Newt’s limited himself to Republican or married women . . . if so I may have misjudged him.

  350. teledude Says:

It appears the mudslinging wankers for Mitt have overplayed their hand!

  351. greg Says:

  352. SGS Says:

Teledude (333) “… I will have forty percent of Obama’s government dismantled” which is still 60% bigger than the one under Bush Administration. We need to cut 150% or more of Obama’s government, or 50% of Bush’s.

  353. John2 Says:

Judging by the talk of the media all the exit polls must have Gingrich winning by like 6% or something.

  354. Matthew Kilburn Says:

If, as many expect, Rubio and Jeb come out for Romney in the next couple of days, they going to have a lot of explaining to do…

….namely, WHY THE HELL WOULDN’T YOU ENDORSE MITT BEFORE SC, WHEN HE NEEDED THE BOOST?

If that plays out as it appears it will, I can’t help but think Jeb and Rubio were purposely trying to make Florida more important.

  355. greg Says:

cause iam guessing the obama advisers are glued to the tv too even if they say NO?

  356. Bill Says:

    347

Whatever man. You are beyond ridiculous. But I take great joy in knowing that Obama will destroy Gingrich, and the Tea Party with him. After 4 more years of Obama and Pelosi, Palin and her breed will be DOA in the GOP. It’ll belong to Christie, who is more moderate than Mitt.

Lose the battle, win the war. The baggers are finished.

    Married women = mostly conservative

    Single women = mostly liberal

  359. Bill Says:

    351

The establishment is making NH and FL more prominent, and crippling IA and SC, which will help future sane candidates overcome the Palin/Cain/insane wing.

  360. Matthew Kilburn Says:

Newt won’t get my vote if he becomes the nominee, I don’t care if we do end up with four more years of Obama. Gingrich does not belong in the White House.

He simply isn’t the better man.

  361. Boomer Says:

    347.

    Quit whining. Again.

Newt was so proud of himself for his anti-capitalist, lefty hit on Romney with the dumb movie about Romney. All he did was insure that Romney is going to go absolutely nuclear on Newt in FL.

Newt hasn’t seen tough campaigning yet. But he’s about to.

    And FL is not SC.

to run. None of them will attract the clown brigade, and the Romney and RomNot coalitions will split and mash together in interesting ways. Gonna be a fun ride.

  368. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    #356 -

    Be that as it may:

    1) It still hurts Social Conservatism, which is essential to our country
    2) It drags. this. damn. race. out. another. six. weeks.

If Gingrich does win, and if the margin is close like it appears, and if Romney does end up with those key Florida endorsements, I can’t help but hold Jeb and Rubio partially accountable for sticking us with a long primary.

    265.

You know you’ve mentioned dragging out the race 37,469 times?

  373. SGS Says:

Matthew (357) I feel the same. It is better to have Republicans taking control of the Capitol, and start the process to impeach Obama (when he “work” around their gridlock unconstitutionally) than to have Newt screwing up everything, causing Republicans to lose both Houses in 2016. It’ll be hard to fight against Newt when he has the ability to destroy you, no matter if you are his friend or foe.

  374. Tim Says:

Joe Pa heard Newt was winning and couldn’t bear it. Thanks a lot Newt.

  375. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    Because there isn’t any sadness.

    Its pure anger.

  376. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

    368. I still say a few higher than 5-6…

  377. Matthew Kilburn Says:

“You know you’ve mentioned dragging out the race 37,469 times?”

Because its a point that can’t be overemphasized, perhaps?

  378. Tim Says:

If Newt becomes the nominee, the only question will be can Obama match or even eclipse Reagan and Nixon’s 49 state win.

Given that Newt is already losing Texas, Virginia, and North Carolina to Obama, it’s very possible.

  379. teledude Says:

  383. K.G. Says:

#376 Then they are completely delusional. This country is NOT going to trade in Obama for newt.

  385. Matthew Kilburn Says:

Thinking objectively for a moment – if thats what is fueling Newt’s surge, he has real problems ahead, because of all the things in this campaign, the fact that Romney continuously runs stronger against Obama is the most well-documented and least disputable.

Bull****. You’re trying to get people to look the other way from the kind of despicable occupier of too much space that Newt Gingrich his.

You have shown time and again that you don’t give a damn about a person’s character, or about social values. You just hate Romney.

If Gingrich was routinely soliciting prostitutes, you’d still be backing him.

  401. Watchinitall Says:

Tonight.. it’s eat, drink, and be CONSERVATIVE :)

Btw, check tonight’s internals among CONSERVATIVES if you get a chance.

    GO NEWT!

  403. aspire Says:

I wouldn’t mind a long primary, except Gingrich is trying to divide the party along regional and economical lines. He’s also using Obama/99% arguments that Obama is already using in ads.

  404. Boomer Says:

    368.

Sounds about right. A modest win for a son of the South in a very, deep South state. Still not nearly as impressive as Romney did in NH.

I don’t care what the exit polls say, anyone who has spent anytime in the South knows that many think the Northern War of Aggression is still going on and nothing is more damaging than a guy like Newt from GA calling his opponent a Massachusetts moderate about 2000 times a day. When I was living in FL, I dated a girl from GA. Her folks had a second home in SC which was their retirement destination. The two states may have a border but it is pretty blurred.

Florida on the other hand, is not SC. There are parts along the northern border and the Panhandle that are the South but as the old saying goes the further south you go in FL the further north you get. Tampa and much of the west coast feels like the midwest transplanted to the beach while the areas around Fort Lauderdale and Miami have so many retirees from the Northeast you can even get a good cup of chowder and a passable cheesesteak.

If Newt tries his son of the South shtick in Florida it will have limited effect. And the Romney campaign has been blanketing the state for a year now. And now Romney will shake off the prevent defense campaign mode and go on attack. No more free passes from Newt, we will be back to the time when Newt tried to poke Romney about the individual mandate and Romney shoved it back down his throat.

Enjoy the win tonight, Smack. It’s going to be a lot less easy from here on out.

  405. teledude Says:

    397. Kilburn…I do not hate Romney, he is my second choice.

You, however, hate Newt…it is eating you up inside. turning your heart black.

You can’t go on like this…it’s not healthy.

    I’m just here to help

  406. Jared C Says:

The media spin is in high gear already. The leading narrative tonight and tomorrow is that this is an entirely new race. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is slamming Romney saying that SC proves that the more people see Romney the less they like him. And she says this from Newt Gingrichs SC Party tonight. I wonder what that says about who the Dems would rather face??

  407. Freedom for William Wallace Says:

Looking at it objectively. Did Romney really have a chance winning in a state full of toothless hillbillies that all have been married multiple times?

That ia a Noot crowd folks.

  408. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

    397.

    Matthew Rombot,

Since you won’t stop talking about it, do you want a prostitute for your 18th birthday? Is that the real deal?

  409. Freedom for William Wallace Says:

Isn’t Deliverance South Carolina’s state movie? No wonder all these people love Noot. It explains a lot about Tele, Craig for Losers, and Smack as well. :)

  410. Boomer Says:

I would add that the only thing southern voters hate more than a damn yankee is the press which they view slightly less positively than they do Beelzebub.

Newt was given a gift in SC when he got the daily double of running against Romney and the msm.

    The dream ends tonight.

  411. aspire Says:

403 Oh yes. The Democrats would LOVE to face Gingrich. He’s McCain with a double down on the affairs, double the offensiveness, minus the military service and it appears he was a Freddie Mac lobbyist to boot.

  412. teledude Says:

    406. Do you feel better now?

    Such hatred…so unbecoming.

absolutely no class at all. Mitt would be disappointed in his supporters on here I’m sure.

  413. Craig for Newt Gingrich/Marco Rubio Says:

  418. aspire Says:

410 No, they’re clearly impressed with a Southern narcissistic philandering RINO.

  419. no newt Says:

luckily the other regions of the country are not impressed by a Bismarkian nut case like newt…midwest and northeast states have already spoken, the west will say the same

  421. no newt Says:

417, exactly, why can evangelicals in other states see through this guy?, but in the South they are just freaking stupid

  422. Romney/Rubio 2012! Says:

Congrats Newtsters. Big victory for your candidate.

I still feel very confident that Romney will be the nominee, but this does make things very interesting and even more fun.

    Again, enjoy tonight.

  423. ClassyMitt Says:

Newt’s medical records should be made public. He can hardly waddle across the stage without looking exhausted, and the primary is just beginning.

  424. ClassyMitt Says:

I think some of these Evangelicals and their Pastors want to take America back to the 19th century America. It must be hard to be so closed minded and afraid.

  425. Grandma T Says:
