The Pre-South Carolina Endorsement Chart Update

The last update of this chart was the night before the Iowa caucuses. Since that time, Mitt Romney has continued to rake in the endorsements – adding eleven more to the chart in two and a half weeks’ time:

  • Gov McDonnell (VA)
  • Rep Steve Womack (AR)
  • Sen Rob Portman (OH)
  • Rep Mike Turner (OH)
  • Rep John Mica (FL)
  • Ex-Gov Jim Gilmore (VA)
  • Rep Billy Long (MO)
  • Gov Bill Haslam (TN)
  • Rep Bill Huizenga (MI)
  • AG Pam Bondi (FL)
  • Sen John McCain (AZ)

Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum have managed to combine for a grand total of four endorsements — two for Gingrich and two for Santourm:

Gingrich:

  • Gov Rick Perry (TX)
  • Rep Trent Franks (AZ)

Santorum:

  • Rep Tom Marino (PA)
  • Rep Lou Barletta (PA)

Santorum finally managed to pull in the support of a couple home state congressmen. Removing Bachmann, Huntsman, and Perry from the endorsement chart, we are left with an even starker contrast in the number – and quality – of endorsements than before:

The endorsement categories are below, and the list of the endorsers are below the fold. Remember, this chart does not take into account every endorsement a candidate announces – it is simply an attempt to keep track of some of the more important ones. It is not the end all, be all of candidate endorsements, but can be a useful tool.

  • Group 1: Sitting Governors
  • Group 2: Current U.S. Senators and Representatives
  • Group 3: Current Lt Governors, Attorneys General, other notable statewide officeholders
  • Group 4: Former Governors, U.S. Senators, and U.S. Representatives
  • Group 5: RNC Members
Group I Group II Group III Group IV Group V
Romney 6 71 16 36 19
Gingrich 2 9 - 1 -
Paul - 3 - - -
Santorum - 2 - - 1

Names are below the fold. As always, if I missed anyone let me know in the comments.

  1. davidg Says:

i hope South Carolina voters have newt hangover today and wise up and follow the advice of these new endorsements.

  2. aspire Says:

The only question in SC is can they get past wanting to elect a Southern candidate?

  3. ccr Says:

SC could soon be losing their “we elect the GOP candidate” status if the polls are telling the truth!

One has to question their mental status if the majority think Gingrich is POTUS material after his history of choices. Yes, choices have consequences…..even with “remorse”.

The Office of POTUS is a position of respect and honor. The last time Gingrich was in a position of political power……..he claimed his cheating and lying was the result of working so hard for the people of America. Puhleeeeeeeeeeease!

    South Carolina……….are you really thinking????

Santorum would be a better choice than Gingrich……..but Mitt is the absolute BEST!

  4. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

The only thing that can throw South Carolina in Romney’s favor is a DeMint endorsement.

  5. Matt "MWS" Says:

Only 5 current or former House members have endorsed Newt who aren’t from Georgia.

Does this give a moment’s pause to any Newters out there?

  6. independentthinker Says:

You forgot to add John Huntsman

  7. Conservative Independent Says:

Endorsements don’t seem to matter. Shouting and lecturing the media is all that counts. And don’t forget, it’s ok for Newt to act like a pig, so did Clinton. Newt is forgiven for having no moral character.

  8. Greg Says:

I think South Carolina is going to break their streak for selecting the correct candidate. Florida has already cast 1/3 of its ballots, and it is very heavy in favor of Romney. He will get Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio endorsements next week

  9. teledude Says:

Pretty easy to see who the establishment wants.

I wonder if he could make the radical changes needed to save this nation. Doubt it or they wouldn’t back him.

This is the sign of who the ‘politics as usual’ candidate is. Go along to get along, and that also fits with his patrician persona…

We need sudden and radical reform.

    Or we are doomed.

  10. Tim Says:

    9

Hey what happened the last time Newt went up against an unpopular young Democratic president? Oh yea, he turned Clinton’s 42% approval into a 65% approval, gave us a historic election loss in 1998, and resigned in disgrace.

What is it with you and supporting candidates who are so horrible they have to resign mid-term?

  11. Matt "MWS" Says:

Based on this list, of the hundreds of Republicans who were in the House under Gingrich’s speakership, only three have endorsed him.

    That’s telling.

  12. Gunlock Bill Says:

By the ABRtard definition, all of those endorsing Romney are establishment RINOs.

The Republican party is made up of a majority of RINOs.

Real Republicans (those that endorse ABR) are a minority in their own party.

    Get it?

  13. ccr Says:

The people who have WORKED with Gingrich in his “oh-so conservative” era………….DO NOT LIKE/ENDORSE Gingrich.

    Hellooooooooooooooo South Carolina!

  14. Thunder (Romney -The only sane canidate) Says:

I was just listening to Dick Morris, and he thinks that Santorum won the debate yesterday, which means Romney really won.

    here is why:

Santorum is going to take many of Newts voters lowering Newt below Romney and Romney will win SC. I agree with him.

Also, many SoCon Women are not going to vote for Newt and they will get their husbands to go along.

  15. Abe Says:

    THANKS for the update.

The current battle of SC may be raging…….but, I believe, the overall WAR has already been won.

  16. Bill Says:

    9

Pretty easy to see who the baggers want.

They went for Ken Buck, Christine O’Donnell, Carl Paladino, Sharron Angle, Joe Miller, Dan Maes, and now the worst of the worst, Newt Gingrich.

And the end result will be exactly the same.

  17. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Telly,

How will Newt accomplish that “sudden and radical reform” when hardly anyone in Congress-even in his own party- likes or respects him?

    Burn down the Reichstag?

  18. davidg Says:

Now that newt has bloviated his way back to the top, the media will puncture him again and send him south.
Look for this to happen in the next 2 days.

  19. Firecracker (Romney/Christie) Says:

8 — Do you have any links that show approximately how many people have voted in FL? That is great news if you are correct!

  20. Conservative Independent Says:

#9 Who does the establishment want? The only thing that is clear is that voters refuse to really vet the candidate they support. It really is a reality tv world. Or are you upset that Newt cannot find very many of his former colleagues to support him? Would you hire him for the workplace if he came in without letters of recommendation?

  21. Conservative Independent Says:

#19 Absentee voting has become a big deal as long as the votes are really counted. Some states hold them and only count them if the election is close. Early voting on the actual machines is another story. Those votes are counted right away.

  22. Granny T Says:

    Matt,
I was watching for you to post a new thread so I could ask you a question. I bookmarked one of your previous threads and was wondering if you or anyone else has updated it. If so, would someone please post a new link in this thread?

The Complete 2012 Primary Calendar, IA Caucus Debate Edition that I had bookmarked is very outdated. :( Are there any other debates scheduled that aren’t on that list?

  23. David Says:

Frank Newport of Gallup just said that Romney’s support is “collapsing” nationwide.

Yet the Party will not abide Newt.

If Gingrich wins on Saturday, I suspect the phone lines of key Republican leaders will be red-hot on Sunday.

A late entry is not outside the realm of possibility. In fact, with a Newt win on Saturday I put the odds at 40%.

  24. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    It’s really this simple:

The voters think Newt Gingrich is going to yell at Obama.

The anger toward Obama is so high, the voters want a candidate who will lash out at Obama.

Mitt won’t yell at Obama, and therefore, he is unacceptable…

  25. Noelle Says:

I was just getting ready to ask about an updated list of endorsement. Thanks for reading my mind.

  26. David Says:

I thought this video was already made moot, but Newt’s rise makes it relevant again: http://youtu.be/laU6PfdgW44

  27. Henry Hubitt Says:

I bet endorsements don’t matter much.

Y’all Romney enthusiasts are too down in the dumps right now. Gingrich isn’t going to be elected by acclamation. He yelled in Iowa and New Hampshire, and look what it got him?

  28. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

By the way, if Newt wins SC tomorrow, we lose to Obama.

Less likely, Newt becomes the nominee and loses to Obama because of women voters and suburbanites.

More likely, Mitt becomes the nominee and loses to Obama because the party collapses in on itself over a close race with an angry, bitter, desperate Gingrich. The talk radio and far-right crowd latches onto him for dear life and ends up convincing 1/3 of the party to hate Romney so much they stay home.

    Neither scenario is acceptable.

Mitt needs to win Saturday or Obama gets re-elected.

  29. Sean Says:

“A late entry is not outside the realm of possibility. In fact, with a Newt win on Saturday I put the odds at 40%.”

Where in the world would they get their name on the ballot? Filing deadlines have come and gone.

  30. Matt Coulter Says:

Granny T, click the “GOP Debate Calendar” link at the top of the home page.

  31. Granny T Says:

    Matt,
    Thank you!

  32. Matt "MWS" Says:

    MassCon,

    That’s overstating the case.

Mitt and the Party have 9 months to heal wounds. There is always, at some point, a rally around the flag for the party. One primary is not going to cause that kind of rift. There is no real loyalty to Newt, it’s just anti-Mitt sentiment. So it’s up to him to find a way to fix that. It’s not like a huge chunk of Republicans will refuse to support anyone but Newt. It’s just that Mitt will have to find a way to reach his skeptics. That’s true of every nominee, to some extent. Some (Reagan) are more successful than others (Goldwater).

  33. ccr Says:

    #24……..you’re probably right!

    We want someone BOMBASTIC.

Yet…………we want someone who can get things dones in Washington.

That means someone who is respectful and respected. Someone who has a track record of doing that (Mitt) would be someone who could help the Congress’ favorabilities to improve!

  34. ccr Says:

    #33……….NOT “We want someone…….”

    SOME want someone bombastic….

    NOT me!

  35. David Says:

#29 – Quite a few deadlines still out there. http://www.fec.gov/pubrec/fe2012/2012pdates.pdf

Enough, at least, to deny the nomination to someone heading into the convention. And if that late entrant had all the momentum, they’d get the nod.

  36. Matt "MWS" Says:

But the election this Fall will not be decided tomorrow, no matter the outcome.

Mitt will be the nominee regardless. There will be many happenings and much news over the next 9 months that will impact the race far more than what will be a long forgotten primary.

Shoot, even Rush was shilling for McCain by Fall of ’08.

  37. David Says:

Filing deadlines haven’t closed in PA, NY, CA, KY, IN, WV, GA, UT and many others.

  38. Jman Says:

Mitt is the man! Time and time again he has shown he is the most Presidential and the ONLY one who can defeat Obama. These endorsements show how well respected he is and how he is the one that everyone can agree on that can defeat Obama.

  39. XorGate Says:

Good list and thanks for compiling it. You did, however, forget that Paul was endorsed this week by SC Sen Tom Davis and a couple other SC Senators.

    I’m stoked for tomorrow. :)

  40. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    36

    Rush was shilling for Palin.

  41. Josiah Schmidt Says:

Fmr Gov Gary Johnson endorsed Paul for the Republican nomination when he switched to the Libertarian Party. Fmr Rep Barry Goldwater Jr has also endorsed Paul again this go-around.

  42. Andrew Says:

#39 well they didn’t even report any of his endorsements on this site and this is the first post with a ron paul tag since the 11th. smh

  43. Frozone Says:

I am no longer endorsing Newt for White House Press Secretary. Please make the necessary adjustment.

  44. Endorsements Matter, Especially for a Republican | Mitt Romney Central Says:

  45. gtx13 Oh Says:

Are you kidding me !! All this garbage trash of charts means nothing when you try to magnify the RINO entranched liberals versus power of We, THe People !

  46. gtx13 Oh Says:

BY the way ! Haley ! Which Halley !
