Christine O’Donnell Endorses Mitt Romney + Overnight Open Thread

From the official release:

For me, this endorsement comes down to trust. I am endorsing Governor Romney because I trust him to do the right thing. He has the strength of conviction to do the right thing regardless of opposition. America needs a president who is not a Washington Insider. America needs a president who hasn’t been playing the game for the last three decades. America needs a president who can turn our economy around, put Americans back to work, and will lead with stability, integrity and the values that we hold dear. I am confident Mitt Romney will be that president.

Consider this our overnight open thread. So have at it, anything goes…

  1. Jonathan Says:

Uh-oh, this is bad news for Governor Romney. Now Newt Gingrich will have an easy time linking Mitt Romney to those pagans who are trying to bring down America.

  2. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    Intrade:

    Romney – 46.5%
    Gingrich – 31%

….and in terms of Tea-Party gets, there are few names higher.

  3. Irish Right Says:

You’d think that one of these days the “Tea Partiers won’t support Romney” meme would crash of its own weight. Probably not in my lifetime, though.

  4. Micah Says:

    Question of the night:

    Who is the biggest Rino?

Christine Odonnell, John Thune, or Ann Coulter?

  5. SixMom Says:

She also said (talking about how we treat Romney):

“It’s politics of personal destruction aimed at our own and it’s got to stop,” she added. “Right now a lawn gnome could beat Obama in 2012, so, yes, we can be picky, but not nasty or malicious. If we don’t stop the Republican cannibalism, we’re simply turning this election over to the Democrats, who certainly don’t deserve it.”

  6. Micah Says:

    5. When she said “lawn gnome” was that a direct insult of Newt?

  7. Bob Hovic Says:

Kavon: I was hoping to see Matt Coulter post this — along with the endorsement from the Assistant Road Commissioner of West Nowhere, Nebraska.

  8. Husky Says:

I think the kiss of death is when Craig for Losers endorses you. His record this year is worse than the Indianapolis Colts this year.

I’ll take O’Donnell if she writes a check to Romney for President.

  9. teledude Says:

Christine O’Donnell on ’10 run: “I didn’t receive that encouragement from anyone in the GOP establishment, but Mitt Romney took the time to urge me on”

    “Mitt’s not progressive, he’s me.”

Just in case anyone is confused (Max Twain)

3 months ago, facing threat of sharing a stage with Christine O’Donnell, Sarah Palin threatened to pull out of an Iowa rally.

  10. SixMom Says:

Hah! Not sure, but Obama is more resilient than that, otherwise we wouldn’t be so worried about Perry/Bachmann/Newt etc.

  11. The REAL Truth Says:

    4 micah

The answer to your question is……Newt Gingrich

The real question of the night is: What was Newt doing to Nancy Pelosi on that couch?

  12. Right Wingnut Says:

Funny…the MittHeads I know have always been rather dismissive of the witch, and have been known to use her to beat Palin over the head.

I actually sent her campaign $25. Unfortunately, her detractors were right. She turned out to be a flake.

  13. GNV Says:

    8

As a Colts fan, it pains me to agree with that statement…but Craig for Losers has been winning even less than they have. :(

Between this and Craig Bergman, get ready for ads about Mormons flying around on broomsticks. :P

  14. Right Wingnut Says:

The witch has cast her spell, and will soon be enjoying a draught of Newt brew with her new chum, Willard.

  15. moose Says:

One of many endorsements Mitt has received. Still waiting for a Newt endorsement by one of his fellow house colleagues during his time in washington.

  16. Alex Knepper Says:

Between this and Dan Quayle, Romney’s got this nomination all sewn up!

  17. Texas Conservative Says:

The twitter comments on this endorsement have been fun to read.

  18. Right Wingnut Says:

    15,

He’s received several. In fact received 60 endorsements in Georgia today.

    http://www.rightspeak.net/2011/12/newt-nets-more-than-60-georgia.html

  19. Micah Says:

    15. Better chance having one of his ex wives endorse him…

  20. Right Wingnut Says:

Mitt responds to his big get.

    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/christine-odonnell-endorses-mitt-romney-for-president/

  21. moose Says:

18 ahh, colleagues in WASHINGTON, you know Coburn, King … those type

  22. The REAL Truth Says:

    19 micah

Moose was talking about the US House not the Atlanta city Council.

  23. The REAL Truth Says:

sorry micah that was for left wing nut

  24. aspire Says:

Leno just used the joke about Gingrich already making 3 no adultery pledges. He said he should make a “no more adultery pledge”.

    Ouch.

  25. SixMom Says:

    #16 That’s sarcastic, right?

  26. Right Wingnut Says:

    21,

5 are currently serving in congress, 2 are former members of congress. I don’t know how many were there while Newt was Speaker. I’m not going to check, because I don’t really care.

  27. Ci2Eye Says:

I like how she reminded all of Hannity’s viewers that Gingrich endorsed Dede Scozzafava instead of the Tea Party candidate.

Hannity quickly said he’d apologized for that. At some point, a candidate has to own their decisions instead of just apologizing for them.

  28. SixMom Says:

#15, #18 Remember those 1000+ pastors that are ready to save the world from the cult people flying around on broomsticks? Well, the deep south including Georgia has more than their fair share of those. Hasn’t Georgia always been Newt country?

  29. moose Says:

Wingnut, in response to this 10,000 dollar Romney bet … yeah it was a mistake, but not even in the same universe as taking 1.6 million dollars from one of the worst run corporations/organisations in U.S history – FREDDIE MAC -

  30. Right Wingnut Says:

    28,

    Ahhh…more “bigot” baiting.

    Charming.

  31. Dave Says:

If Christine had endorsed Newt, this would be a problem in that she would be about the biggest name endorsement he has. But since Mitt has been endorsed by Sen. Thune, Gov. Pawlenty, Gov. Christie, Sen. Ayotte, Sen. Blunt, dozens of other Senators, Congressmen, Governors, and major party figures, O’Donnell is just one of a great many.

Impact? Minimal…..which is not to say she’s unwelcome.

And BTW, She contributed a few hundred dollars to the campaign weeks before she formally endorsed. She has the courage of her convictions.

  32. SixMom Says:

Washington Post write-up on the 10K bet. Just posted 3 hrs. ago, she got it right on the money.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/romneys-10000-wager-was-a-safe-bet/2011/12/13/gIQA2aXhsO_story.html

  33. moose Says:

Apologies to wingnut, I misread ‘big get’ in one of your posts as ‘big bet’, lol

  34. K.G. Says:

I like Christine. She not a witch or a bit&ch. She’s very sweet.

#27 And Hannity turns himself inside out and upside down defending Newt. Did you hear him w/Coulter? Did you hear him with Rove on the radio a couple of weeks ago?

  35. SixMom Says:

#30 Sorry, wasn’t intending to do that at all. My apologies. I intended to poke fun at my own more than anything. But I do believe one point it valid in that Georgia has always been not Mitt friendly.

  36. The REAL Truth Says:

    30

Your right Romney put up the Newt new hire to say that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where evil cultist.

Anyone who disqualifies Romney for his religion are only sheep following dishonest leaders.

  37. SixMom Says:

#30 #36 OK, this is my fault. Stop so I can sleep tonight.

  38. K.G. Says:

#36 And who are the dishonest leaders following? Hmmm…………..

  39. moose Says:

31 I agree Dave, minimal but not unwelcomed

  40. aspire Says:

Wouldn’t it have been funny if Romney said about the wager that since Perry basically knew he was wrong, he assumed he’d only get 1 to 10,000 odds out of Perry, and he wanted to at least make a dollar off of it. :)

  41. The REAL Truth Says:

    38
    Their own vain ambitions????? Hmmmmmmm……

  42. teledude Says:

Newt’s coming to Iowa tomorrow. This is good. He has work to do here.

  43. moose Says:

It’s not the endorsement which intrigues me but the reaction from some on the right who criticize Christine with DNC talking points. Valid criticisms of anyone is good but using the ‘witch’ stuff against Christine is pretty weak.

  44. The REAL Truth Says:

    42 Tele

Don’t tell me Newt has another book signing in Iowa?

  45. moose Says:

42 Is he going to Iowa to sign another ‘no adultery’ pledge

  46. SixMom Says:

For your entertainment…these cartoons poke fun at us (republican party during the primaries), but some of them are hilarious.

  47. Ci2Eye Says:

Is there a Tiffanys grand opening?

  48. SixMom Says:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/toles-looks-to-election-2012/2011/04/04/AFIGBGdC_gallery.html#photo=40

  51. SixMom Says:

My favorite is Newt doing the zig-zag between distractions. The cartoonist is a genius.

  52. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

Supporting the “electable” stuck us with Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, and John McCain. Supporting the “crazy conservative” brought us Ronald Reagan.

    And now Newt Gingrich :)

  53. Ci2Eye Says:

The crazy conservative would be Ron Paul.

    Newt is a moderate.

  54. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

The Rombots ace in the hole: http://reason.com/assets/mc/mwelch/2011_10/Romney_robot.jpg

  55. Micah Says:

I have figured out the secrets to life:

If you don’t know the answer to a question just say – I’m a historian.

If you commit adultry just say – I’m a grandfather now.

If you accept millions from a government organization that you railed on just say – It was “private sector work”.

I have learned much from this man they call Newt.

  56. Right Wingnut Says:

The endorsement drew a universally snarky reaction on Twitter, with Tim Albrecht, Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad’s communications director, tweeting, “O’Donnell casts her spell for Romney.” Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston added: “After O’Donnell endorsement, Romney reverses himself on Salem witch trials. Was for, now against.”
Ian Koski, communications director for Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) who defeated O’Donnell in the 2010 general election, tweeted out “Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha” moments after the announcement. And the Democratic National Committee simply forwarded the Romney press release along with a “ICYMI” tag — allowing it to speak for itself.

52 Craig, didn’t you say the same thing about Bachmann, Santorum, Perry and Cain?? just curious

  58. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

53.Conservatives don’t blame 911 on America, pull every American troop off their overseas base, and legalize heroin.

    Case closed.

  59. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    57.

They are ALL crazy conservatives, TOO :)

  60. Micah Says:

    59. You went from conservatives to just crazy.

  61. moose Says:

55 lol, man there have been some funny posts in this thread but that takes the cake. Somehow your ‘secrets of life’ must go mainstream

  62. LV Says:

Like I said on an earlier thread…..The O’Donnell endorsement was mature, knowledgeable and well thought out…..She reminded me of the old days of the Republican party when we were united in purpose had lots of ideas….Now it’s just a party of intolerance where we all have to think alike.

  63. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

Crazy Conservative Speaker Gingrich-led Republicans….the result:

    * Four consecutive balanced budgets
    * Over $400 billion of debt paid off
    * Bipartisan welfare reform
    * 11 million new jobs
    * Unemployment falling to under 4%.

    That’s Kraaaazeeee!!! 8)

  64. Right Wingnut Says:

Here’s a Twitter feed for the O’Donnell endorsement. Funny stuff.

  65. John Mark Says:

“Supporting the “electable” stuck us with Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, and John McCain. Supporting the “crazy conservative” brought us Ronald Reagan And now Newt Gingrich”

Yeah, Only Newt’s not a crazy conservative. He’s just characterless hack who has proved himself very good at lying, and is smart enough to know that this is a good year to play the “Crazy Conservative.”

Yep, he’s scheduled to meet with Huck in Iowa. Maybe take in a movie together is the word on the street ;)

  68. John Mark Says:

59, They actually might have been crazy conservatives, Newt’s just playing with you.

  69. Micah Says:

    63. If only his record stopped there…

I might actually vote for him! :)

  70. moose Says:

59 Craig you should’ve used a different word then crazy, like visionary, staunch or distinguished. Hey Craig, the Romney train ain’t so bad, you should make that your next stop when your sick of Newt

  71. aspire Says:

63 Except 4/5 of those could be directly linked to the dot-com bubble. So really Al Gore deserves credit since he invented the internet.

Darn it! Willard scored that one, too.

    Today’s WSJ/NBC Poll:

    Newt 40
Willard 23 ..soon to be 23.00001

  73. Kavon W. Nikrad Says:

  74. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    Witch!

  75. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife!”

  76. Ci2Eye Says:

The DNC is so nasty and sleazy. Did the RNC attempt to pick the nominee in the Democrat primary in 2004 to save Bush’s hide? Maybe they did but I don’t remember it.

The DNC needs to let Republicans pick their guy and then once it is settled, have at it but the way they intervene drives me crazy. Their actions are made worse by the vile, repulsive messenger they have in Wasserman-Schultz.

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/14/dnc-to-take-romney-attacks-sky-high/

  77. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

Newt is holding out for Elizabeth Montgomery’s endorsement.

  78. Right Wingnut Says:

“Mitt is not a progressive. He’s me”

Que up the DNC ad machine.

  79. jaaron Says:

75- the only post that I’ve liked from you…hahaha

  80. Ci2Eye Says:

    To the DNC:

Sure a $10,000 bet is perhaps out of touch but a 17 day trip to a $3,500 per night property is out of touch too.

  81. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    76.

So let me get this straight. If anyone other than Romney is nominated, the DNC is responsible.

Or is it, anyone other than Newt, Paul, Michele, Cain, Perry, Huntsman, or Santorum?

  82. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    79.

Rombots have never been accused of having a sense of humor on the internet or off.

    Sooooo… Are you a witch?

  83. aspire Says:

the Democratic National Committee is hiring an airplane to circle over New York and New Jersey on Wednesday with a 175-foot sign that reads: “Bet you 10k Romney’s Out of Touch.”

How much is that going to cost?

  84. Matthew E. Miller Says:

This primary is just classic. O’Donnell, the flakiest of tea-party flakes- the primo uno example of conservatives cutting off their nose to spite their face- endorses Mr. RINO. And it won’t matter. Rubio could give a 2 hour speech extolling Romney’s virtues and he’d just be the newest RINO, traitorous hack. I don’t know what it says about the Republican Party that even O’Donnell’s not crazy enough for them.

  85. aspire Says:

A 10K bet that never happened may get spun as out of touch, but Romney only needs one bathroom – in fact he only needs a bucket apparently. :)

  86. Colorado Guy Says:

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse for the “progressive” in the race….

I don’t know what’s worse, that O’Donnell endorsed Romney or that Romney, his campaign and his supporters are touting the endorsement.

  87. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    84.

    Rubio endorsed Huck in ’08.

Does that make Rubio a anti-RINO?

  88. eric Says:

Iowa open for everyone except Huntsman

  89. jaaron Says:

82 – huh? I was giving you props for the princess bride shout-out. You really need to read more closely.

  90. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    89.

Princess what? What are you talking about, Rombot!

  91. eric Says:

Craig, how do you think lastest Iowa PPP poll

  92. LV Says:

    Craig for Newt….

Geez….You’ve posted about 14 or 15 comments…..O’Donnell must have really got you excited!

  93. jaaron Says:

92 – Never mind, I was obviously wrong in giving you props. The princess bride, the movie; one of the most quoted movies of all time. “I’m not a witch, I’m your wife” is a line from that movie. Like I said I gave you too much credit.

  94. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    91.

    Daily Kos and Seiu witchery!!

No way Willard is only SIX behind Newt.

  95. Matthew E. Miller Says:

    Craig,

No, indeed. Everything that happened before last week has officially unhappened. Unless it involves Romney, in which case we’re authorized to go back to 1949 and examine his toddler droppings. I’m surprised you haven’t gotten the memo. Rubio’s support of Huckabee would make him a RINO, among the true-believer set, but as the past does not exist, he’s safe. Unless, as I said, he endorses Romney.

  96. Jaxemer11 Says:

    What a liberal RINO!

  97. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    93.

    Is it out yet? ;)

  98. Matthew E. Miller Says:

In all seriousness, I congratulate O’Donnell. She is the second women who I’ve formerly despised (Coulter’s the other), who’s embraced a semblance of sanity. Strange bedfellows.

  99. eric Says:

94, Maybe we need more poll prove PPP poll. ARG poll prove PPP

  100. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    95.

Now that IS funny, Matthew. Well done.

  105. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    103.

That’s crazy Rombot speak, Eric!!! You’re not one of THOSE?

Newt can finish behind Paul in IA, and still win SC and FL = Game OVER!

Uncle Ron Paul and Willard Flopney will NEVER beat Newt in SC or FL.

    Not in this lifetime.

  106. moose Says:

Eric, Newt won’t win Iowa. There is no way he will win the majority of the evangelical vote in Iowa.

  107. Craig for Newt & Marco Says:

    Eric,

Let’s instead bet $10,000,000 that Newt will make Willard, the Ambassador to France! I heard Willard speaks the language and once spent the war there.

  108. obamaisastatist Says:

who gives a RA. only one endorsement is important in this cycled and we’re all looking at Wasilla for it…

  109. eric Says:

Carig, I think Newt can not come back if he lost IA, NH. You know, sometimes, momentum is very importance. McCain can not win SC if he lost nh in2008, if romney win N.H., then i think huckbee will win S.C., romney will win FL. in 2008

  110. Micah Says:

    107. Woaa!!!

That’s Fannie & Freddie kind of money! What are you a Newt bundler?

  111. eric Says:

Carig, rightnow, you should prepare your $10,000,000.

    You are funny guy

  112. moose Says:

110 No way! Craig would need to up it by about 1.5 mill

  113. jaaron Says:

107 – Done, I’ll take that bet. Shake on it? You say he does, I say he doesn’t.

Dang it, now I’m out of touch…

  122. Jeff Y Says:

121, Robin, I really doubt it. Maybe a few, but I don’t think many.

  123. Robin from Indiana Says:

I don’t know Jeff. I have spoken to many who feel as I do that they are tired of being spat upon. I feel that there is one person in this race who is worse for this country than Barack Obama, and that person is Newt Gingrich. I cannot believe what I am seeing happening in this country. Some may see it and still proceed. Instead, I will wash my hands, and dust my feet.

  125. Loose Era Says:

funny comments, can’t top em. COD is DOA but since she’s a nut and Mitt obviously isn’t, it can’t hurt…might get him a few wiccans, bubble heads, people living in earlhy fall 2010, maybe a couple a impatient palinistas.

Open thread comments: (1) let me know when it is okay to take the trend of the daily gallup tracking polls as evidence of Newt’s peak, and its presence in the rear view mirror. I got five days straight down from 37 to 31.
    (2) Trump is a disgusting, dangerous, embarrassment. Good news? He never ever follows through, so the third party run is a joke, not a threat – he just wants media attention and to have his ass licked by the candidates.

  126. aspire Says:

    It’s getting rough.

A spokesman for Bachmann’s South Carolina effort, Wesley Donehue, is openly accusing the Gingrich campaign of paying off tea party members for their public support.

“Bachmann is trying to grow an organic base of supporters, and Newt Gingrich is trying to buy off tea party groups,” Donehue told the Columbia Free-Times on Nov. 21. “Newt Gingrich knows the only way he can get the tea party vote is to buy it.”

Bachmann’s South Carolina tea party co-chair followed up in a recent press statement.

“It’s ludicrous to think that the tea party would line up behind Newt Gingrich, a true ‘Washington insider,’” wrote Kelly Payne, a high school civics teacher who ran for state education superintendent in 2010. Payne also noted Gingrich’s support for the federal government’s Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), and his appearance with Nancy Pelosi in a TV ad about climate change.

“It’s pretty obvious why he has to throw around some of that cash to pick up tea party support,” she wrote.

Olson says his own financial relationship with the Gingrich campaign is “absolutely zero.” He added that there were a few tea party members on Gingrich’s state payroll here, but said each of them has practical campaign experience.

    Craig,

Craig for Losers has already been seen digging in an old Michigan landfill looking for Willard diapers. Too bad he’s not smart enough to realize disposable diapers weren’t available then…

Soon the RomNots will post it’s all Romney’s fault.

He must be disquishing himself to look like Newt.

Look for Grigrich to accuse Romney of impersonating him soon.

  130. LV Says:

Why isn’t Gingrich’s age an issue like it was for McCain? I mean, if he wins the WH he’ll be 74 years old at the end of his first term.

Craig for Newt – See #5

  132. SixMom Says:

#118 Absolutely. And anyone whining about that reveals themselves. When another man being a real man threatens you – you’ve written yourself off as never being capable of the same.

  133. SixMom Says:

I have learned that race42012 successfully predicts (as a consensus of the polls) who will rise and who will fall – ahead of the polls.

Therefore, it is my theory now that Newt will fall. How fast I don’t know, but he will fall.

  134. SixMom Says:

*(consensus of the WHOLE) Good grief, is my brain now rhyming the wrong words?

  135. SixMom Says:

“Newt Gingrich’s momentum is fading in Iowa,” President of Public Policy Polling Dean Debnam said in a PPP press release. “Meanwhile Ron Paul is building an unusual coalition of support for a Republican primary. The big question is: will they really turn out?”

I laughed so hard about the O’Donnell endorsement because I could only think about this:

I am sure they would not give permission to use this in an ad, but my goodness it would be hilarious.

  137. Mark in PA Says:

This endorsement is a perfect example of people seeing through their own set lens. There are quite a few of the posts on here calling her a Witch. Do we not all know that the Dems set up that narrative, and that it’s totally BS? If she had endorsed Newt, there are quite a few people on here that would do a 180 on their comments. That, to me, is just lazy and sad.

She’s certainly not a big endorsement, but I agree that she’s defninitely not unwelcome. And she’s wouldn’t have been bad for Newt to get.

I love what people keep sarcastically saying… “between this and Dan Quayle, Mitt’s got this wrapped up!” That would be funny if that was all he had. Kinda like Newt being in Washington for 30 years and so far not getting any endorsements. He “bruised some feelings” when he was “forcing change,” but don’t we all wonder why he doesn’t ALSO have a LONG LONG list of friends and people who owe him favors??? Where are they????????

  138. PabloZed Says:

#137 – Um, she said she “dabbled in witchcraft.” I just watched the video. Yesterday, the Romney campaign called the “My views are progressive” video “deceptive.” This is why Romney has a trust problem (among others).

As funny as this endorsement is, it brings risks. Voters are already suspicious of Romney and some have an opinion of LDS that an endorsement by a “witch” only reinforces. It may sound silly, but a candidate should never welcome an association with witchcraft, satanism, or anything that sounds or is considered anti-christian. It really is unseemly to some parts of the electorate.

This endorsement won’t doom Mitt. Only Craigfer’s endorsement can do that.

  143. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Pablo,

“Yesterday, the Romney campaign called the “My views are progressive” video “deceptive.”

So Romney’s saying he deceived the voters of Massachusetts?

Is that why his approval rating was in the crapper, or was it just because mid-term he started flying around the country trashing them like last night’s prom conquest?

  144. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Marque,

“This endorsement won’t doom Mitt. Only Craigfer’s endorsement can do that.”

This is true. Which is what makes me think that Craig has been on Mitt’s payroll all along.

Now that I think about it…… has anyone ever seen “Craig” and Tagg Romney in the same room at the same time?

  145. PabloZed Says:

    #143

“So Romney’s saying he deceived the voters of Massachusetts?”

He either deceived them or is deceiving us (or rather, those who believe him when he says he’s conservative).

“Is that why his approval rating was in the crapper, or was it just because mid-term he started flying around the country trashing them like last night’s prom conquest?”

Interesting fact: Romney spent 212 days of his final year in office outside the state. Talk about AWOL.

  146. Matt "MWS" Says:

I think Mitt’s “Progressive” moment is in many ways similar to Perry’s “Oops” moment. Romney’s video won’t get as much play, of course, and wasn’t live before a national audience, so it won’t have quite the same impact.

But in both cases, they are damaging because they crystalize in people’s minds the biggest lingering doubt they have about the candidate. In the case of Perry, of course, that he’s stupid. In the case of Mitt, that he’s a pandering phony who will say or do anything to get elected.

Time will tell how much damage it does. But it looks like the Rombots may have even given up their defense of the video, after their initial attempts to tell us that the meaning of “progressive” has changed radically in 9 years was met with much derision and laughter.

  147. Matt "MWS" Says:

Since the Democratic party is quite active in Massachusetts, they are probably sitting on a whole stack of interesting quotes from Mitt during the ’94 and ’02 campaigns, as well as his governorship. I suspect that “I’m a moderate with progressive views” is just the tip of the iceburg.

  148. MarqueG Says:

has anyone ever seen “Craig” and Tagg Romney in the same room at the same time?

Some claim that Craig cannot speak when Tagg is simultaneously taking a drink.

“Interesting fact: Romney spent 212 days of his final year in office outside the state. Talk about AWOL”

Lets assume that “Fact” is correct, even missing 212 days Mitt set the state up for success (Took it from near bankruptcy to a 2 Billion rain day fund), since Duval Patrick has been in office MA is now hemorrhaging in the RED. So basically you’re saying that Mitt missed 212 days and still ran the state effectively? Can’t say that about Obama, he’s missed at least 212 days with his 17 vacations and driven us into the ground. One thing you can bank on, If Mitt is the nominee he will stabilize the economy, add jobs and will not take a Pay or extended vacations, that is reality.

  150. teledude Says:

Great article that explains Newt’s leadership style and how effective he can be, by some one who was there are knows him.

Tony Blankley notes that some congressmen and former congressmen have a vested interest in supporting Mitt Romney for the GOP presidential nomination and explains why they are bending the ears of reporters to push the narrative that Gingrich was never much of a leader and never got much done. Not true, he says:

    Newt’s Past and Future Leadership
    http://townhall.com/columnists/tonyblankley/2011/12/14/newts_past_and_future_leadership

Curious. I remember most of them enthusiastically following his leadership year after year as the Republican whip from 1989-1994. It was the most successful congressional opposition movement since Benjamin Disraeli formed the modern Conservative Party in Britain in the mid-19th century. And after the GOP took back the House for the first time in 40 years (and the Senate, too, by the way), Gingrich’s four years as speaker proved to be the most productive, legislative congressional years since at least 1965 to 1967, and they were led by Lyndon B. Johnson from the White House.

Working against — and with — Democratic President Bill Clinton, we passed into law most of the Contract with America, welfare reform, telecommunications reform (which ushered in the modern cell phone and Internet age), we had the first balanced budget since before the Vietnam War, we cut taxes and lowered unemployment to under 5 percent.

Just who the heck do all these wizard political pros think managed all that? It wasn’t us clever staffers or many of the now grumbling GOP K Street crowd. We helped, but Gingrich led. I admit Gingrich’s methods were not orthodox. He modified the seniority committee chairman system and picked the best members for the key posts. More than a few feathers got ruffled.

One of his key insights was to recognize that the two-dozen Northeastern moderates and liberals in the GOP caucus held the balance of power — we didn’t have 218 safe conservative votes in the House. Gingrich needed to avoid them playing off the GOP against the Democrats, which is what such a faction in any congressional party normally tries to do.

Rather, he wanted them to feel fundamental loyalty and value in sticking with the GOP working majority. To do that, they had to get some of the provisions that they wanted in bills, often enough that they would stick with the conservatives on other issues.

This required a lot of maneuvering by Gingrich. Conservative members got frustrated that he did that. They called that erratic on his part. No, it was a necessary, calculated maneuver. He was actually shrewdly managing a precarious majority. If Gingrich hadn’t kept the Northeastern liberals in the fold, very little would have been accomplished in those spectacular four years of legislating and leadership.

But when it came to fundamental conservative principles and the political strategies necessary to protect them, Gingrich saw the threats to them and never wavered.

Teledude, I’m always amazed at your rabid support of low standards. Newt has very low standards, can’t lead his way out of a paper bag. 155. SixMom Says:

It’s not AWOL if you know where he was and what he was doing, which was working hard, like always and no one has worked harder for others in the Republican Party for the last 3 years than Romney. The man never stops….

Christine O’Donnell has no personal integrity. It made me crazy when her supporters trampled on Karl Rove’s statements saying we need to choose candidates that have at least a base level of character and respect for honesty. Her positions on many issues are admirable but backing Romney simply shows once again that she has no core principals. I bet the Romney guys were wincing, like I was, watching her on CNN this morning. I think she would say or do anything just to stay in the public eye and have continued delusions of relevance. If I know her, and I do, she’s living off the income from selling her ’10 campaign-donations name list to other wanna-be’s.
