GOP Immigration Chairman Trashes Gingrich

From The Hill:

The Republican chairman of the Immigration Reform caucus blasted GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Tuesday for calling to allow some illegal immigrants to remain in the country.
Speaking on CNN’s “John King, U.S.A.,” Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.) likened Gingrich’s plan to drilling a hole in the bottom of a sinking boat to let the water out.

“Newt, I don’t care who you are,” Bilbray said. “Quit sending the mixed message that we are going to somehow reward or accommodate you if you broke the law while there are those waiting patiently and playing by the rules, waiting to come into this country legally.”

I have a feeling that Newt Gingrich is going to scare the hell out of a lot of these Anybody But Romney people. I mean, it’s all fun and games to keep searching around for an exciting (but amateur) alternative, but there’s a point where you’ve crossed one bridge too far I think.

In the coming weeks, I think Gingrich’s rise will freak some of these people out and finally give them an awakening as to what they’ve done to themselves. When they start seeing that Gingrich is what he really is, I think it will be a cup of hot coffee and a cold shower to cure their NotRomney hangover.

  2. David Says:

The establishment will unite against Gingrich, because they know first hand how toxic he is – both politically and personally.

You know who i blame in all this? Daniels, Thune, Barbour and (to a lesser degree) Ryan and Christie. By shying away from a winnable race they’ve forced the base into choosing between an unprincipled yet morally upright leader (Romney,) an unprincipled and inarticulate boob (Perry) and a somewhat-principled, greedy, egomaniac who at one time was the most hated politician in the country.

It was the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party, and they punted. Now we get what we deserve.

I could vote for Perry. I could vote for Romney. I could vote for Huntsman. But under no circumstances whatsoever will I vote for Gingrich.

  3. Booyeah Says:

I hope so, #1, but they’ve been so demonstrably hypocritical and stupid so far. I don’t have a lot of hope.

  4. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    kudos to Bilbray.

There are plenty of ways to get rid of illegal immigrants, or at least develop a system that doesn’t unfairly reward them, without rounding them up in person. Certainly, we don’t have to allow any of them to stay here and become citizens, without first going home…even if they begin the process here, all of them should have to return home at somepoint.

Newt is pandering. To one of the worst possible viewpoints.

  5. CF Says:

*Trump wanted universal, federal health care mandates, so his supporters now move to Gingrich who wanted (and still wants) the same.
*Bachmann has no governing experience, so her supporters move to Gingrich even though he has none either.
*Perry likes instate tuition for illegals, so his supporters move to Gingrich who wants amnesty.
*Cain “allegedly” committed adultery, so his supporters move to Gingrich who has admitted to adultery -twice-.

Anyone else see a problem here?

  6. CF Says:

Did Mitt Romney’s flip-flops stop him from being a Valedictorian at BYU and completing two degrees at Harvard Business and Law as Suma Cum Laude?
Did Mitt Romney’s flip-flops stop him from saving thousands of companies as a private sector CEO?
Did Mitt Romney’s flip-flops stop him from saving the 2002 Olympics from bribery scandal and red ink?
Did Mitt Romney’s flip-flops stop him from turning a 1.5 Billion deficit to a 600 Million surplus as Governor of Mass?
Did Mitt Romney’s flip-flops stop him from being a faithful, honest 40 year husband and father of 5 sons?

Based on his history, is there any rational reason to believe Mitt Romney’s flip-flops will stop him from being a great President?

um…I’ll take a stab at it…you are incapable of telling the truth?

    What do I win?

  8. ccr Says:

#4 Mitt’s right on this. They don’t get to the front of line because they broke the law.

#2 Mitt is a principled, intelligent, moral, experienced person whose goal is to leave his children/grandchildren an America like he had to live his “dream”. Mitt hasn’t gotten RICH (like Newt and Perry) off of being a politician!

  9. ccr Says:

#7……..#5 did an EXCELLENT job with the truth.

  10. Dave Says:

    CF,

I agree with the thrust of your arguments in #s 5 and 6, but it should be noted, in the name of accuracy, that the number of companies saved by Mitt at Bain Capital, while he was there, was less than a hundred….which is still pretty amazing. Add the ones he saved as a consultant at Bain Management, and the total goes a little over 150. No need to embellish that by stating it was “thousands.”

My other point of disagreement is pluralizing the word flip flop. It’s a bogus charge to say there was more than one, and, according to Liberal revisionist history, it’s now questioned whether Mitt was EVER really pro-choice. So, NO flip flops. Just one flip.

Aside from these quibbles, keep up the good work.

  11. Boomer Says:

I am going to love the Newt vetting over the next four weeks. Its going to be brutal.

    We good now, Mr Moderator?

  13. K.G. Says:

Love Brain Bilbray. Love our Republican representatives from CA. Bilbray, living down here in SD on the border, should be listened to. NOT Nutty Newty.

  14. K.G. Says:

#5 CF: The problem is pretty clear. ABM: Anybody But a Mormon.

Yeah, they can say Mitt has perfect hair and a plastic personality. But really? Is that reason to reject him in favor of one reject after another?

  15. Anybody but NEWT Says:

In honor of Adam’s post on New Hampshire my new name will be Anybody but NEWT. If we nominate Newt, we will forever be saddled with the collapse of the housing market, since Newt took millions of dollars in lobbying money as a (historian) wink wink. Isn’t bad enough that the collapse happened under Bush. The family values voters credibility will be the laughing stock of the Dems for nominating a serial adulterer and the guy who disgraced the GOP during the Clinton impeachment. Forget the tea party’s mantra of getting rid of career politicians. The Evangelical’s who believe that Mormon’s are not Christian, also believe that Catholics are almost as evil as mormons. For those GOP that hate Romney care developed by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, Newt worked with the Heritage Foundation think tank and was/is for national insurance mandates. CONGRATULATIONS at least it is not Mitt Romney.

  16. K.G. Says:

    #12: CF:

Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him to cheat on his very ill wives?
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him to be ejected from the Speakership by his own party, Boehner, no less.
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him to go from a adulterous So. Baptist in order to marry an adulteress Catholic?
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause Tom Cobern to write a book against Newt’s leadership style?
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him to receive nearly 2 million from Freddie?
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him not to be a lobbiest but merely facilitate lobbiests?
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him to run on fiscal sanity and then go fiscally insane?
Did Newt’s flip-flops cause him to sit on the global warming couch with Nancy and then deny global warming?

Is there any reason to believe that given Newt’s record any sane person would believe he could actually be elected. Of if elected, would make a stable, sane POTUS?

    Hell, no.

  17. casuist Says:

CONGRATULATIONS at least it is not Mitt Romney Willard.

Yes! That’s good enough for me. Go Gingrich!

  18. casuist Says:

I have a feeling that Newt Gingrich is going to scare the hell out of a lot of these Anybody But Romney people.

You just hold your breath until that happens.

  19. Dave Says:

    CF,

Still pluralized flip flop in your last line.

  20. K.G. Says:

#17 As I said, no sane person would vote for Newt.

  21. CF Says:

    ABM: Anybody But a Mormon.

If you oppose Harry Ried are you anti-Mormon? I would support the other Mormon in the race were he the front-runner. Am I still anti-Mormon just because I oppose Willard?

  23. PabloZed Says:

    Singular flip flop? (repost)

I decided to analyze the DNC MittvMitt ad. The ad says Romney flip flopped on 11 issues, which I grade as true or false:

    1) Obama Stimulus – Romney was for stimulus but not necessarily Obama’s. I give it a false.

    2) Abortion – Romney admits he changed. True.

    3) Reagan – Romney was not for Reagan, now he is. True.

    4) Obamacare. The ad talks about the exchanges that both Obamacare and Romneycare have. Romney was for the exchanges in Obamacare, now he wants to repeal it all. I say true.

    5) Immigration. We are just going to have to disagree on this one. Romney supporters say hiring a company that employs illegals is not hiring illegals. I say that is a distinction without a difference in voters’ minds. So I say the charge is true.

    6) Humans contribute to global warming. True.

    7) Ohio ballot Question Two. Again, Romney did not say he was against it, but rather said he was not taking a position. And then he did. That is a change and so it’s true.

    8) No New Taxes Pledge – Unless the ad is being totally dishonest and talking about two different pledges, it seems true.

    9) Assault Weapons Ban – Romney said he was against any “new” ban. Charge is false.

    10) Tarp. True.

    11) Auto Rescue. Romney called the auto bailout “tragic.” He pinned an editorial saying it was necessary for the car companies to go through a restructuring and that giving them money would be a waste. After the car companies paid back the loans (although that the gov’t also acquired stock that it still owns), Romney claimed the rescue was his idea. So true.

  24. CF Says:

    My last line?

    We good now, Mr Moderator?”

You’re fired from being a moderator.

  25. Dave Says:

    K.G.,

He can’t get elected, but, as bad as he is, if he WERE elected, he would be less harmful to the country than Obama…..IF his foreign policy impulsiveness didn’t cause us to be on the receiving end of a nuclear exchange.

  26. CF Says:

  27. casuist Says:

I would vote for Satan before I would vote for Romney.

Oh, please permit me to qualify that claim in light of recent events. I would not only vote for Satan, I would campaign for him, or her, or it. Hell (get it? Hell?), I would write his speeches for him, or her, or it, adapted right from Milton’s epic Paradise Lost.

    … Be it so, since he [ 245 ]
Who now is Sovran can dispose and bid
What shall be right: fardest from him is best
Whom reason hath equald, force hath made supream

A mind not to be chang’d by Place or Time.
The mind is its own place, and in it self

OK., so I’d have to edit such that the hell we make into heaven is the U.S. Welfare state with its out-of-control entitlements like RomneyCare that Willard foisted on us, which sort of makes you have to wonder, who is the real Satan, the guy who wants to get you out of this mess (NOT-Romney), or the guy who got you into it (Willard!).

  28. K.G. Says:

#22 I don’t know what you are. And no, I don’t believe everybody who rejects Romney in favor of ANYBODY else is an anti-Mormon. However, I do believe the very powerful Teavangelical crowd has evidenced a penchant for chasing one fatally flawed candidate after another as opposed to settling on Romney whose polls show he could beat Obama and would make a sane, stable POTUS.

It’s clear Newt is also fatally flawed. He cannot win; he should not win. You tell me why the Teavangelicals are stuck on stupid.

  29. Rob Says:

I won’t lie. I’m getting nervous about Gingrich. It’s not that I’m so upset that the guy I support may not win the nomination, it’s the idea that Gingrich may be our general election candidate. Honestly, I think the only candidates weaker in the general than Newt would be Bachmann and Perry, and I’d vote for either of them any day over Newt.

  30. casuist Says:

You tell me why the Teavangelicals are stuck on stupid.

Here are about 10 pages. http://www.redstate.com/erick/files/2011/11/Romney-Top-Hits.pdf

    Excerpts:

Bain Capital financed 1988 buyout with junk bonds issued by Drexel Burnham – when SEC filed charges
against the firm and CEO Michael Milken, Bain Capital maintained their business relationship; Romney later
reminisced about “the glorious days of Drexel Burnham.”
    • In 2004, Bain & Co. received a multi-million dollar contract from the National Iranian Oil Company.
    • Romney sat on board of directors of Bain portfolio company Damon Clinical Laboratories, which in 1996 was
fined over $100 million for Medicare fraud committed during Romney’s tenure.
    • Bain Capital owned company named Ampad that purchased an Indiana paper plant, fired its workers and
offered to bring them back at drastically reduced salary and benefits – the firings became an issue in the 1994
Senate race when workers blamed Romney for their situation and appeared in Kennedy campaign ads.
    • After Romney became governor, Bain Capital teamed up with Chinese appliance maker Haier Group in 2005
in effort to purchase Newton, IA-based Maytag Corp. and send jobs overseas.
    • At least two Bain Capital companies – Stream International and Modus Media – focused on outsourced
technical support services, expanding facilities abroad while contracting operations in the United States.
    • Bain Capital operated steel company called GS Industries which went bankrupt in 2001 after years of labor
strife, closing a plant in Kansas City and laying off over 700 workers.

I dare you to change your name to “casuist for Satan over Romney”. You got the balls to do it? Come on…pretty please?!

  32. K.G. Says:

#25 Dave. It’s hard to tell what Newt would do in office. That’s the problem.

Obama is clueless, looking to advisors, timid, cannot execute. Newt would be the polar opposite: The smartest guy in the room, listening to no one, risk taking, big idea, manic, delusional.

Can’t we just elect the safe, sane, sensible guy who’s known for sitting down, listening, mulling, gathering data, team building and then performing as a proven executive?

  33. casuist Says:

I won’t lie. I’m getting nervous about Gingrich.

  35. Greg Says:

I think it is common knowledge amongst leaders on the GOP that Newt cannot beat Obama. The message has to be circulated without the benefit of the press, which wants to see Gingrich as the sacrificial lamb

  36. casuist Says:

You got the balls to do it?

Someone who supports a human windsock like Willard wants to talk about balls?

Irony Alert. The contributor who identifies himself or herself as CF is emitting dangerously high levels of unintentional irony.

  37. K.G. Says:

#36 What a bunch of BS. You talk about irony? The human wind sock is also the world’s biggest robber baron?

  38. CF Says:

    37

Hey at least I don’t support and worship Satan like you do. Come on casuist, change your name to “Satan over Romney”! I really thought you had the guts to do it.

  39. casuist Says:

The human wind sock is also the world’s biggest robber baron?

No contradiction, my young apprentice. Tis’ the way of the confidence huckster to shape shift his way to riches not rightfully his own as he leaves broken lives and broken families in his wake.

  40. CF Says:

    40

Tell me casuist, list for me some qualities that you like about Satan over Mitt Romney. I think we’d all love to see that list here.

  41. casuist Says:

Hey at least I don’t support and worship Satan like you do.

Are you always so painfully literal? Even children understand the concept of irony: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100914143430.htm But apparently you don’t.

  43. CF Says:

    42

LOL!!! Too late to take it back now! I’ll be posting that quote every chance I get here. Let the thousands of internet users decide whether it’s irony or not.

  44. asparagus Says:

Can’t understand why these idiot journalists are saying Mitt had the same position in 2006 when Tom Tancredo endorsed Mitt. You think Tancredo wouldn’t have noticed a big amnesty plan coming from the Romney camp?

Whatever journalists say, always believe the opposite. Unless its Jen Rubin, she’s clearly in the tank for Mitt so she’s the exception.

  54. Keith Price Says:

    6. CF, Your post seems to concede Mitt’s flip flops. You should have said “alleged”

First, the worst he could be accused of is a “flip”. Never a “flop” (which is going back to the original position).

Second, the only REAL flip was on abortion. It’s been acknowledged and explained, and accepted by Ronald Regan’s son.

He DID make some mistakes when he was a ROOKIE, in his run against Ted Kennedy. He made himself sound less conservative. But, that was a LONG time ago and his GOVERNING record has been very consistent.

So, CF, please be careful in your defense of Mitt that you don’t make it sound like you’re admitting he is a flip flopper.

  55. Keith Price Says:

54 should have been referencing #12.

  56. Sidecar Says:
