  1. Jonathan Says:

Bob Schieffer got really irritating when he was on his high-horse about the smoking in Cain’s ad. Other than that, the interview was okay.

  2. PabloZed Says:

Bob often gets rather presumptuous. Just as he was with Newt re Tiffany’s.

  3. Shane Says:

It’s good to see a major Sunday Morning news show host spend roughly 1/3 of a leading Presidential candidate’s air time discussing a half-second puff of smoke in a viral web ad. Great use of time, Bob! Once again illustrating why these news shows have gone completely downhill in terms of substance over the past 10 years or so.

I’m not a Cain supporter (although I think he’s a genuinely good guy and everyone seems to like him on a personal level), but he is a front-runner at the moment and should be treated as such. He shouldn’t have to spend several minutes of valuable national air-time discussing a cigarette puff. It’s just stupid.

  4. MarqueG Says:

Schieffer erroneously claims that Bush agreed to a “date certain” for ending the troop deployment to Iraq. IIRC, Bush signed off on the Status of Forces Agreement which was of limited duration, i.e., it had an expiration date. Before that expiration date, a new SOFA was supposed to be negotiated and signed. The only reason there is a “date certain” for a withdrawal is because the Prez didn’t try to negotiate a successor SOFA, preferring to fulfill a campaign promise instead, after which we’ll find out whether or not the withdrawal was a good idea.

  5. Dave Says:

The problem with the Cain candidacy, aside from whoever it is who produces his web ads, is that you can’t sell 9/9/9 in the General…..not when Obama has $1 Billion to obfuscate and vilify it. To be successful, he would need to explain embedded taxes and price formation to the 47% of Americans not paying income taxes, as well as to EVERYONE who buys anything.

Because if people don’t understand that the prices they pay for goods will drop enough to offset the extra sales taxes they will pay on them, they will vote for Obama….who only wants to increase taxes on Rich people, and tax them until NOBODY is rich….or anything approaching what we currently consider rich.

And, if people who don’t pay income tax now don’t understand how many new opportunities to make money, as in how many jobs will be created by 9/9/9, and how much those new jobs will push up the wages paid in existing jobs, they, too, will vote for Obama.

Cain can’t sell this successfully enough to get elected…..which, I suspect, is Mitt’s problem with it.

  6. Keith Price Says:

    5. Yeah, 999 (or something like it) would be a good thing to try to sell to the public AFTER getting elected — and maybe only after getting elected with a huge majority. It will never pass the general, even with Cain insisting it’s very simple (because it’s not — if it were truly simple, Cain would never have to tell people to read all about it on his website).

  7. Ryan60657 Says:

I think Cain handled the smoking ad issue very nicely in this piece. It shouldn’t be the government or anyone else to tell people what to put in their bodies. However, I can’t believe so much time in this interview was spent on this non-issue.

I think overall, Cain exceeded expectations on this interview. He rose a few points from my perspective. Definitely the front-runner for “Not-Mitt”.

  8. Philip Mazzei Says:

Please, help this Pro-Mitt cartoon GO VIRAL for Halloween!
    http://mittfitts.com/2011/10/28/mittfitts-happy-halloween-a-treat-for-america/

  9. RUBIOZONE Says:

Quite frankly, Cain scares me. Overly simplistic in his responses.

  10. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    “Overly simplistic in his responses.”

…a drawback from our standpoint, but probably not for the hoards in the GOP who are convinced that being President is incredibly easy.

  11. kirkha Says:

Cain seems like a great guy. I’ve liked him ever since he started registering on the national scene.
But, I echo #9. His answers are oversimplistic, his solutions such as 9-9-9 are naive and his organization is virtually non-existent.
    http://swampland.time.com/2011/10/24/the-mystery-of-the-missing-presidential-campaign-cain-operation-mia-in-key-states/

He’s got a great life and survival story, but I just don’t think he’s ready for being POTUS.

He’s where he is now because he’s:
    1) The anti-Mitt flavor of the month.
    2) He’s flamboyant and likable (How did that work for us the last time?)
    3) He appeals to the most active segment of the party. (Who by the way are not nearly large enough in the general to beat Obama)

People should remember that while national polls are interesting, that’s not how the nomination process plays out. It’s the early states that matter. Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Florida, Michigan, etc. Look at the polls across those states and it’s a different story, especially New Hampshire. Look at the cash as well. Cain has a long, long ways to go and the national polls don’t even begin to tell that story.

There are three nomination races going on:
    1) The money race
    2) The popularity race
    3) The endorsement, momentum and strategy race

Who do you think is winning these? Right now, Cain is winning #2. He’s the flavor of the month. People are willing to give him some breaks for his gaffs and miscues for a little while because of his affability, but after some time, people will get tired of making excuses for him and turn away.

By Martin Gould and David A. Patten

Herman Cain’s catchy 9-9-9 tax overhaul system is gathering major supporters as the former pizza magnate consolidates his position at the top of the Republican field in the race for the White House.

House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan and Ronald Reagan’s economic guru Art Laffer both expressed their support for the plan to replace the current tax code.

The anti-tax Club for Growth also came out in favor of Cain’s plan which would cut income and corporate taxes to 9 percent and institute a new national sales tax at the same level. Payroll, capital gains and estate taxes would all be eliminated under Cain’s proposals.

  14. LV Says:

I was looking forward to this interview, but there was nothing new..just once again asking to clear up some prior comments….still didn’t do it..I think he copped out on the foreign affairs by giving generic answers about Iraq…and what I got from the interview is that if elected president, he is willing to learn on the job.

He’s been around a long time, I think he should have been learning and developing his platform before running for President….He sounds like someone who doesn’t really want to be President.

  15. 999MeansJobs.com Says:

Eventually Cain’s plan calls for the complete elimination of income taxes – and the IRS – and the introduction of what he calls the Fair Tax*, in which the all Federal revenue would come from a sales tax.

“I love the 9-9-9 plan, it’s a great first step,” Laffer told Fox News’ Bret Baier. “This is a lot better than our current tax laws that are filled with all sorts of ducks, chickens, pigs and turkeys. They’ve just got to be cleaned out and we’ve got to completely revamp the codes.” -Newsmax

  16. K.G. Says:

Like Barack Obama discovered, it’s a lot more fun to run for POTUS than be POTUS.

Except for Romney, I believe. He’s going thru the pain of running so he can actually be the president. Good compaigners are not necessarily good executives and vice versa.

  17. Firecracker (Romney/West) Says:

Craig for Huck, Bachmann, Perry, Cain, the Flavor of the Month is at it again.

Meanwhile, Romney is at 68% on Intrade. 8)

  18. teledude Says:

I think this explains the 9-9-9 plan pretty well. People just need to see it. It would help if we had a neutral and unbiased media who would actually report on it without the left wing demagoguery.

    http://www.999calculator.net/

  19. CraigS Says:

I can’t imagine anybody is dumb enough to think you can sell 999 to the voters…….or even 990. The current tax code is so distorted that it will be impossible politically to sell a NEW tax to voters who don’t currently pay any taxes. Admittedly, these folks mostly vote Democratic. But that’s the problem, isn’t it ? 47 % of people pay no tax and they are supported by the top 10 % who pay 38 %. The plan obviously reduces Cain’s taxes and Romneys’ and Forbes and Hannity’s and O’Reillys , from 38 to 9 and shifts the balanced budget, revenue neutral requirement to make up the difference to the 47 % who go from 0 to 9 plus a national sales tax.
Be serious, folks. Obama will CRUCIFY the GOP on a CROSS of NEW TAXES

    CraigS

  20. zeek Says:

999 tax plan. fair tax plan, etc. These have been attempted for years with no success. Sometimes people promote them because they can hide behind their simplicity on the surface without having to defend the details. None of these ideas are viable or safe unless there is joint constitutional ammendment to eliminate income tax. The odds of that happening? If you dont do this then all you have done is given the federal goverment another avenue of taxation. A first start… giving the goverment a new form of taxation is the worst thing you could ever do as a first step.

  28. Maverick1995 Says:

If this is true it could help him. I could see the socially liberal republicans supporting him more and in the open primaries he is likely to see a lot of democrats coming over and voting for him. I cite Ted Kennedy’s continuously being reelected even though he murdered someone and Bill Clinton had an affair and got reelected.

  29. Maverick1995 Says:

    referring to 27. previous post

  30. Boomer Says:

Ted Kennedy never had to run in a Republican primary in Iowa or South Carolina.

I don’t see this as been a big plus for his candidacy.

  32. Keith Price Says:

  34. barktwiggs Says:

Personal morality is never an issue in politics…unless of course its a Republican involved. Looks like Cain’s 15 minutes are up.

  35. Maverick1995 Says:

From what I am reading on other sites with more information on the account it looks like it could actually help him. Apparently, the two women stated that he made lewd gestures, but coworkers and the organization as a whole took Cain’s side of the account, which was that no such actions occurred. Looks like another left wing hit job similar to the one on Perry with the racist rock and the latest against Rubio.

  36. Dave Gaultier Says:

I could see the socially liberal republicans supporting him more

Oh please. Sexual harassment has nothing to do with one’s position on the social spectrum. It makes the guy seem like a creep. That’s it.

I say we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions. ANYONE can make a sexual harassment claim against anyone. I’m glad it’s being looked into, but I’m not going to hold against Cain until it’s shown to be true.

The article certainly has all the trappings of truth, though.

  40. Boomer Says:

    >>I say we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions. ANYONE can make a sexual harassment claim against anyone.

Very true. Why just the other day when ordering a meat lovers pizza I asked the waitress to hold the sausage and she called the manager on me. I bet the same thing happened to Herman.

  41. Smack1968 Says:

I don’t like this story……It hurts Newt. It will remind the voters one more time of Newt’s flaws. I need Cain to fall, and if he does it will be Newt’s turn to rise, especailly when Newt wipes Cain’s ass in the Lincoln-Douglas debate that Cain & newt is having on November 5th.

But if Cain falls to Earth because of this story…well…..well….this won’t help Newt no matter how many times Newt and said sorry for his past mistakes and laid himself in front of the “Cross”….so to speak.

Don’t like this story coming out now….don’t like it one bit…..in a pure Political way.

hhuuummmmmmm…. I don’ like this for Newt.

    DAM!!

  42. Still Hurting Says:

The article has been in research for several weeks and the identities have been nailed down as well as the fact that they received settlements to leave the association and remain silent in return for 5 figure settlements. It sure looks like they found a smoking gun.

  43. Still Hurting Says:

Here is the Cain campaign’s non-denial denial

If he is denying and it turns out to be true then that will make it even worse for him.

  45. Smack1968 Says:

    Still Hurting,

Tough spot for Cain. How do you respond to this when the woman have remained silent?

    Tough spot.

Politics is a full contact sport.

  46. Smack1968 Says:

    Maverick,

That is interesting…..The campaign is not only saying that Cain did any wrong, but they are saying that the report to which describes Cain being accused is inaccurate…..false.

  47. Keith Price Says:

    45

Politics is a full contact sport.

That might be what got Cain INTO this mess! :)

    42. Organizations make settlements all the time, even when innocent, because the just the accusation can do more damage than defending is worth. Sometimes is easier, less expensive, and better to settle to make it go away.

So, I still don’t know on this.

Also, some women can be overly sensitive to relatively benign comments. We just don’t know the details in this case.

  48. rightgal Says:

Keith, but FIVE figures? That’s awful high for just an acusation.

  49. Keith Price Says:

    46. “You are wrong” is one of Cains standard answers.

  50. Keith Price Says:

    48. True. Has that figure been verified?

  51. Still Hurting Says:

    Smack,

nowhere in the statement does the campaign say it isn’t true.

  52. Smack1968 Says:

    Still Hurting

Read the end of this article about Gordon saying the report was false. The report being that Cain had been accused of Harassment.

    http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_CAIN_HARASSMENT?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2011-10-30-20-54-16

  53. Smack1968 Says:

Here it is. This is pretty agressive by the Cain campaign….to deny the report…not just the contents of the report being true or false..but the report itself.

“Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon said the political press was “dredging up thinly sourced allegations” from Cain’s tenure leading the trade group in the 1990s. Gordon said the report includes “unsubstantiated personal attacks” and said the press is “casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up to the facts.”

Asked if Cain’s campaign was denying the report, Gordon said, “Yes.”

  66. Maverick1995 Says:

As someone that is considering Cain it wouldn’t bother me so much if the story was true depending on the details, but if he lies about the story not being true that really hurts him in my opinion.

  67. 999MeansJobs.com Says:

    Herman Cain for President:

Fearing the message of Herman Cain who is shaking up the political landscape in Washington, Inside the Beltway media have begun to launch unsubstantiated personal attacks on Cain.

Dredging up thinly sourced allegations stemming from Mr. Cain’s tenure as the Chief Executive Officer at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, political trade press are now casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up to the facts.

Since Washington establishment critics haven’t had much luck in attacking Mr. Cain’s ideas to fix a bad economy and create jobs, they are trying to attack him in any way they can.

Sadly, we’ve seen this movie played out before – a prominent Conservative targeted by LIBERALS simply because they disagree with his politics.

Mr. Cain — and all Americans, deserve better.

I warned that conservatives would regret supporting Cain.

  71. Cikader Says:

I know Oprah would be proud of Mr. Cain. He is good man and Oprah knows the best men in town.

  72. Herman Cain = Affirmative Action Candidate Says:

We are incredibly fortunate that Cain is now dead in the water. I feared he would ride a wave of racial euphoria and white guilt to win the nomination like Obama in 2008, but Cain has destroyed himself through his own truly despicable and immoral conduct.

  73. Katechon Says:

Cain sexually harassed not one, but two women = a pattern

    they sued and received compensation

    So CAIN DID IT

    Then they signed non-disclosures

  74. Keith Price Says:

    72. Careful what you wish for. Cain was providing a nice buffer for Romney. We may not like who floats in to fill the vacuum if Cain implodes this early.

  75. Lindas Says:

I would rather give Cain the benefit of the doubt until we hear more about this.

  76. Maverick1995 Says:

Ann Coulter on Fox states that this will improve Cain’s standing in Iowa.

  77. Herman Cain = Affirmative Action Candidate Says:

Herman Cain’s pathetic efforts to lie and deny will prove futile. His claim that he is only “vaguely familiar” with his immoral conduct and the five figure payoffs to keep it secret is laughable. It will be very enjoyable to watch the fall of Herman Cain as tries to engage in Bill Clinton-style spin and distortion.

  78. Smack1968 Says:

As Newt Gingrich’s RACE42012 Campaign Manager, my Smackdaddy advice to Newt is to attack the press for this story on Cain.

    It serves 4 purposes.

    1. As Cain falls because of this story, by coming to the side of your fellow Georgian, you are in good shape to reap the benefits by collecting some of Cain spporters.

    2. You make your own personal flaws and mistakes something of a badge of on Honor, and how sick you are yourself of answering these questions. This won’t be totally successful but you may get some mileage out of this.

3.You establish yourself once again as the crusader againt the Liberal media and its culture.. Point out the Liberal media is always going hard against the Conservatives, especially the black Conservatives, and make yourself into the defender of the 2012 candidates against those evil Libs with the hats that say “Press”

    4. All of this may help you in contrast with Romney not saying a word about this….as we all now Romney will play this one close to the vest.

That is my advice to you Newt, expect my bill in the mail in 3 to 4 business days.

  79. Keith Price Says:

    77. Good point. I know if I were ever accused of sexual misconduct, rightly or wrongly, I’d still remember it, clearly, even 20 years later. Doesn’t seem like something you’d ever forget. And, if you DO forget something like that, what does THAT say about you?

  80. LV Says:

Geraldo on FOX just said that the two women were paid off in a settlement…so there was obviously an investigation.

And if this is true, it was no secret and just a matter of time before someone talked about this.. There had to be a lot of people involved in the case…But we should wait to see if it’s true.

  81. Try Not To Laugh At My 1.9 GPA perry Says:

    That deserves a………
    HUCKABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

  82. Lindas Says:

Cain has gone down to 4.2% on intrade– Romney up to 69%

  83. K.G. Says:

#77 Cain is “vaguely familiar?” Or one of his staff is vaguely familiar? Maybe I didn’t read it carefully.

Of course no one would ever forget such allegations. They could be a life altering smear. And this nonsense about businesses settling law suits rather than fight them. Yes, this happens all the time. If someone falls on your property or that sort of thing your insurance company will settle rather than fight.

But a personal SEXUAL complaint? In my world, if an untrue sexual allegation is made, you fight it to the death. By all means wait and hear what the actual facts are. But if women were actually paid off, it doesn’t look good.

So what do you have? A guy who believes all abortion, even rape and incest, should be illegal. But has sexual harrassment complaints? That’s where a candidate ends up in trouble: hypocrisy.

Clinton gets away with it; that’s who he is. Same with the Kennedys. Edwards didn’t; he pretended to be someone else.

  84. petunia Says:

Wow. I hope that Cain can prove this is bunk.

    I don’t believe it, but I can’t be sure.

Cain has been married for many years. He seems to be a good husband.

I think we need more than anonymous sources.

This sort of reminds me of Clinton and Edwards. It didn’t seem like those were anything either, at first.

It is hard to believe that Cain would run if there was something out there like that.

  85. Keith Price Says:

    84. It’s the lack of definitive denial that has me concerned.

  86. Frank Says:

Cain claims in the interview that “invisible embedded taxes” are responsible for “30 to 40 percent” of the “cost of the product” for “everything that we buy in this country,” and that in his 9-9-9 plan, “We take that out in that first 9.”

I find it VERY hard to believe that Cain’s plan is going to reduce the cost of “everything that we buy in this country” by 30 to 40% before his 9% tax kicks in.

  87. Frank Says:

Ex-cop Mark Furman (O.J. Simpson trial) was on Geraldo at Large and was asked who was behind bringing out the accusations. He said Romney has the most to gain from the accusations and is therefore behind it.

Furman is probably a Perry supporter. Perry has the most to gain from the accusations, especially if it looks like Romney brought it all out.

  88. Keith Price Says:

    87. Yep, I posted in the other thread, I think, that opponents will try to get Romney tangled up in this, somehow.

  89. RUBIOZONE Says:
