Rick Perry gave a speech last Friday to several hundred Republican officials and conservative activists in Manchester, N.H. A video montage has appeared on YouTube. Viewing it is not a pleasant experience if you are a Perry fan.
Now we political junkies are well aware of the fine art of the “hit” video. An opponent will take a very small slice of a candidate’s speech and edit it so to lose all context. He then plays it in such a manner as to make it seem that his target is saying something that he really isn’t.
This happens to nearly all candidates, even for state and local offices. Most people are aware of the technique and its usefulness is generally limited. Only those people inclined to dislike the candidate in the first place will give them much credence. They want to believe what the videos are saying and are disinclined to seek out the full context to discover what exactly the target was saying, not what the manipulator is trying to make it seem like he was saying.
How do people recognize these hatchet jobs? One hallmark of them is they usually consist of one, maybe two excerpts at the most from any given speech. That’s usually all the content in most speeches that can be thus manipulated. Another trait these hit pieces share is that often the slices are done in mid-sentence. The target is either cut off before finishing a thought or the edit starts in the middle. Or something is edited out of the middle so that two thoughts are suddenly placed side by side. It’s quite obvious if you look for it. But, as I said, if you want to believe what the manipulator is saying, you will ignore the warning signs.
But this Perry montage is different. For one thing, it is nearly nine minutes of a roughly 25 minute speech. That means a full third of the speech is being shown — a full third. Whole thoughts, sentences, and paragraphs are presented.
When I watch the video, bearing in mind that the editor is trying to manipulate my thoughts, I cannot help but see a man who appears to be under the influence of something. I am guessing its either the pain medications for his bad back, or maybe he has imbibed a few before the speech to steady his nerves. Either way, Perry does not seem to be in full command of his facilities. This is NOT how a man with ambitions on the Oval Office wishes to be viewed by the public.
A campaign spokesman explained Perry’s performance by stating that “[t]he Governor is passionate about the issues he talks about”. View the video and decide for yourself if the man was being passionate, or being something else.

I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. He comes across, quite frankly, as a lunatic on laughing gas. What the hell is he DOING here?
Words fail.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:17 am
Watching that was painful…
October 30th, 2011 at 3:31 am
Parry is drunk ON CRAZY
October 30th, 2011 at 3:31 am
I dont know if the talk was all that bad. It was just his mannerisms seemed so completely different to his normal style. His hand motions and flippant gestures were a little erratic and uncontrolled. His pattern of speech was uninhibited and flighty, but he could read and follow his notes. Although I am a Romney guy I have always thought Perry looks good, solid, like a tough linebacker or something, but in this he reminds me of a swaying groupie from my highschool days. If it is pain medication and he was just feeling a little touchy, feely, goosey and wanting to connect with friends perhaps he needs a little slack. If he took something to calm his nerves he disqualified hmself for office.
Running for office must be tremendous pressure.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:34 am
Was this a Friars Club speech?
Strange to say the least.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:50 am
For those like me who put the speech on background while doing something else, don’t. Although Perry sounds normal during most of the video (not entirely), it’s how he acts during his speech (And afterwards!) that is so amazing. Watch it.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:56 am
Nerves aside, I think he probably had a drink too many. How much that matters is something people will have to decide for themselves.
October 30th, 2011 at 4:10 am
Bachmann’s chance to point out the effects of Gardasil on cognitive development.
October 30th, 2011 at 4:15 am
Definitely strange for Perry. It wasn’t terrible, just so not what we know Perry to be like. Maybe he was just in a comfortable setting among supporters so he ‘loosenedis his tie’ a bit. There wont be any damage to him from this though, average voters will never see it.

I hope that this isn’t who America wants! America has a better choice, but just like last cycle, let’s hope that this cycle the best man for the job gets elected. A Mike Huckabee endorsement of Romney would be awesome.
October 30th, 2011 at 6:21 am
Huck has said he’s not endorsing until Tampa where he hopes to give a speak on the stage in prime time.
Btw, here’s how you go up against Obama while giving a speech:

speak = speach
October 30th, 2011 at 6:45 am
Wow. If this man gets the GOP nomination, this will be played over and over and over. And… We lose.
October 30th, 2011 at 6:55 am
oops, speech

It’s down to Cain or Romney. Perry and the others are merely wannabe spoilers.
October 30th, 2011 at 7:18 am
#16 I’m glad your for Cain then, otherwwise this place would be an echo chamber.
October 30th, 2011 at 7:32 am
Gold is good.
October 30th, 2011 at 7:53 am
Can any Texans here confirm if that speech is in typical Perry style or not?
October 30th, 2011 at 7:54 am
#3 has it right.
October 30th, 2011 at 8:09 am
is he drunk?
October 30th, 2011 at 8:27 am
Cain is doing two things for Romney:
1. Blocking Perry and sucking the political air out of the ” Not Mitt” room
2. Rallying the Goldwater south as a block vote
I am more inclined now to see a Romney – Cain ticket

October 30th, 2011 at 8:30 am
Perry should consider dropping out. He might be ruining his chances in TX.
October 30th, 2011 at 8:34 am
Of all of the problems I saw with the Perry candidacy, this is one that I did not anticipate. He should really spare himself any more embarrassment and withdraw from the race.
Who is left that continues to support Perry at this point?
October 30th, 2011 at 8:54 am
OK, the shock left me speechless for a while.
SNL couldn’t have done as good a job as this. Was that really Perry?
Did candidate Johnson slip something to candidate Perry?
If Perry was drunk, he sure is one of those happy drunks. Where did the ill mannered, rude, and bombastic Perry go?
This performance was hard to believe.
Thank goodness we won’t be sending this guy up against Obama or Putin.
Final thought…Rush Limbaugh and Rick Perry must be imbibbing the same substance, whatever it is…
October 30th, 2011 at 9:17 am
WOW, I’m so glad my instincts were right on this guy, after viewing this clip and his many debate performances I’m sure his early followers feel very disappointed. After viewing this I believe some more people will be pulling their endorsements of Perry. Jindal can still save face by pulling his endorsement from Perry asap. I’d rather Jindal not endorse anyone then to go down with the Perry ship.
I think the Romney campaign should do an internet ad with a split screen, one showing this speech of Perry and the other showing Romney’s Citadel speech. Yes, two polar opposite speeches but that is the point. One shows a man that is ready for a straight jacket and the other shows a man ready to run this country.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:21 am
Wow, I almost feel bad for Perry.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:22 am
“Cain is doing two things for Romney:
1. Blocking Perry and sucking the political air out of the ” Not Mitt” room
2. Rallying the Goldwater south as a block vote”
Perry is digging his own grave. Romney should worry that there is yet time for another NMR (not Mitt Romney) to arise, being either Santorum or Gingrich. Both of whom are more formidable than Cain and can win IA and SC.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:31 am
Perry should bow out; blame it on his back pain. He thought he could man up and do it; it’s just too much for now. Return the money. Go into hiding for a while. He’s doing himself no good and hurting his reputation for life.
Cain cannot be VP; in his own way he’s behaved like Perry with his bizarre comments. Campaigning for POTUS has to be horrendous. Remember Obama and his 57 states? It’s only for the strongest among us and that appears to be Romney and his last man standing strategy.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:43 am
K.G. at 29, well said. People keep talking about Cain as a VP. I don’t agree with them. Cain is great, but he isn’t disciplined enough to be in either the Presidency of Veep slot. I still don’t think he really wants it. His campaign just announced they are going to be scaling back so he can improve his campaign and make less gaffes. It’s similar to Perry floating the idea of not debating. If you can’t stand the heat…
October 30th, 2011 at 10:05 am
It’s just silly that people criticize Romney for running for the last several years. How dumb is that? That you actually have to prepare yourself and your team? That running for POTUS much less being POTUS is a spur of the moment, off-hand fling?
McCain pull Palin out of AK before she was prepared. Daschle did the same thing with Obama. Go for it now, Daschle told Obama, before you have a record that will be held against you. Oh yeah, that works.
Then you have Rush, who believes that his dog could beat Obama so why not put in a completely unprepared Perry or Cain up against Obama and in the Oval Office? The whole world has gone mad.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:16 am
He is not drunk or on meds, that is just wishful thinking for all you Romney supporters. The video has been pieced together. He is making jokes and the crowd is laughing.
Perry was on Chris Wallace this morning and did great…. Wallace said Romney has not been on since March 2010 and refused to come on again. Guess he can’t take the heat for all his flip flopping on issues that conservatives care about.
I am voting for Perry!!!
October 30th, 2011 at 10:20 am
Nancy, these are more than just 3 second tidbits spliced together. And how can you be sure that the people weren’t laughing AT Governor Perry as opposed to laughing with him?
October 30th, 2011 at 10:23 am
I could only get through 3 minutes of this. Did anyone think Howard Dean scream when they watched this? Yeahhaa!!!
October 30th, 2011 at 10:32 am
Perry could give 500 of the most brilliant Mike Wallace interviews known to man and it wouldn’t help. The dye is cast; the damage is done; doesn’t do any good to lock the barn door after the horse is got out.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:36 am
Perry is 6% in the polls–so why are people still talking about him? Because he’s become the clown at the circus. He needs to pack it in and spare himself, TX and the party any further humiliation.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:40 am
I found the real speech and this speech posted here on this site was spliced. It was at a fund raiser gala For Him. People are clapping for him and laughing at his humor. He gets serious at different times in the speech. If you view the whole speech it is good.
Get it right next time please!!
You all are sure afraid of Perry are you would not keep trying to knock him down.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:00 am
Nancy, even watching the whole video, it is painful to watch Perry’s performance during that speech. What is your excuse for his behavior after the speech when he is swaying and acting like a drunk person when being presented a bottle of maple syrup? I think you see what you want. I want this man nowhere near the presidency.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:20 am
I could see a candidate maybe having a drink at something like a fundraising gala where things are a bit more relaxed… I’m only surmising, but Perry looked drunk, and if he was there is a bigger problem.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:25 am
Rick Perry is not speech like a leader or a presidential, he speech like a movie shower but Mitt look very presidential and he speech like a great leader .
October 30th, 2011 at 11:27 am
Wow, the part where he was talking about Herman Cain was hilarious! Also the part about jobs was too strange for words. He definately seems a little loopy.
He did appear to be under the influence of something here. He slurred some sentences, he was rocking back and forth, his eyes were partially closed. At times he appeared goofy and giddy, and then at times he appeared on the verge of tears.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:33 am

That’s a low blow to Rush.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:41 am

#15…staying true to form Craig. Your spelling skills are like your candidate picking skills. Just keep changing hoping you get it right.
October 30th, 2011 at 12:38 pm
One theory I had when seeing this is that Perry is experiencing a hypomanic state (a mild state of mania) due to antidepressants. I have a background in counseling/psychology and his speech and behavior are consistent with what I have seen with mania/hypomania. A reasonable explanation for this would be if Perry has recently started taking an antidepressant.
That, or he could just be sauced.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:18 pm
You all do not have any proof of what you are saying about him on medication or drinking, he was not on either. This was at a fund raiser for him and he was making jokes. If you think you are really going to change anyone’s mind that they would be easily swayed by a spliced video they were not considering him in the first place. As for how he looked on the Wallace show , he looked just fine, he did a great job. I hope you all will be on board when Perry wins the nomination. Perry has a great energy and tax plan. Go Perry!
October 30th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
I don’t suppose anyone on this board was at the fund raiser and can either confirm or deny the amount of drinking prior to the speech…
When I first started watching the video, I though it was an episode of SNL.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
I’m not a Perry fan, but this has strangely made him seem more likeable.
October 30th, 2011 at 1:48 pm
48. I’m going to make an exception and reply to your post.
No one has said he definitely WAS ON anything. Just that his behavior was consistent with someone who was high on SOMETHING. When he hugged that little bottle of maple syrup I almost spit milk out of my nose — or would have had I been drinking milk.
As for proof, YOU don’t have any proof he WASN’T on something.
I get that you like Perry and are looking for anything to justify this bizarre behavior.
Nice try.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
And, how about this strange position?
October 30th, 2011 at 2:18 pm
In fairness to Perry, it appears he got a standing ovation for that speech.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:24 pm
53.
Kind of a low bar given that he was speaking to his contributors.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:36 pm
Perry was clearly on something.
His hand gestures and facial expressions range from flamboyant to effeminate. Funnily enough, his ability to voice coherent thoughts probably increased in this speech as he was less prone to stutter and come up short on words.
This guy is toast.
October 30th, 2011 at 2:55 pm
His behavior, motions, facial expressions were silly, immature, giddy, bizarre at times. “THIS man is running for the POTUS!!” I told my husband while showing him just seconds of the video. He doesn’t have much need for all of the political talk, but he was pretty surprised at Perry’s behavior/expressions.
He’s simply NOT prepared…or in shape…to run for POTUS and do the immediate, important work we need a leader in the WH to do.
I wonder WHO is supporting/propping this guy up? I felt sorry for him and embarrassed for him. But……..it confirms my decision after researching him, that he is NOT what we need in the WH.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:06 pm
Cain is 100/1 to be VP.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:17 pm
#49 Perry is going to put SNL out of business. He’s doing their stuff for them–and doing it better.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:57 pm
48 – Perry is at 6% in the polls … I don’t think anyone is worried about changing people’s minds. If anyone should be concerned about that it is Perry and his supporters like yourself.

In 1964, Goldwater won only the Southern segregationist states of Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina in addition to his home state of Arizona.
I do not see how Cain is rallying Glodwater’s segregationist supporters.
October 30th, 2011 at 5:15 pm
I agree, Rob. Perry was supposed to be giving a campaign speech, but instead gave his audience a nightclub routine. He seemed to be thriving on how amused the audience was.
October 30th, 2011 at 5:18 pm
37. “You all are sure afraid of Perry or you would not keep trying to knock him down.”
We are afraid he might actually become the nominee and leave us with four more years of socialist policies.
October 30th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
I think Americans just don’t know sometimes which Rick Perry they’re dealing with. Is it the Rick Perry that is on the side of giving speeches while he was drunk before being sober…was it was..before he was not drunk giving speeches, uh, from the standpoint he was standing, uh, for being a tough guy governor before he was for being giddy like a little school when giving speeches…Uh…he’s against being high as a kite on the campaign trail and now he’s for it…I mean, we’ll wait until tomorrow and, and, and wait to see which Rick Perry we’re really talking to…
October 30th, 2011 at 5:53 pm
63. Well, *I* don’t fear Perry will promote socialist policies. But, I do fear he’ll be a serious problem for Mitt and I have no doubts that Perry would lose to Obama. And, we can’t have that.
October 30th, 2011 at 5:58 pm
#64….Ouch
October 30th, 2011 at 5:58 pm
64. LOL
or, “we’ll wait until tomorrow and, and, and wait to see how bad of a hangover Rick Perry really has…”
October 30th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
64 Casey,
That’s hilarious!
October 30th, 2011 at 6:07 pm
#32…Nancy
I think the “horrible” Rombots are being nice by suggesting the Gov. Perry is suffering from the affects of pain meds or from too many drinks with donors before the speech.
You fail to realize that it means much worse if he is not under the influence of anything during this speech.
As for the Rombots being “cruel” to Perry, Gov. Perry continues to use false accusations about Romney in his speechs and ads that have been debunced by fact checkers far and wide and put Gov. Perry way ahead of everyone else in the Pinoccio Olympics.
Gov. Perry must be hoping that his supporters and potential supports are rubes without the will or ability to search out and recognize the truth.
Many people not for either Perry or Romney have stated that Perry has flip-flopped more since releasing his book last year than Romney has since the beginning.
You are a nice person Nancy, so don’t take it personally…
October 30th, 2011 at 6:22 pm
Nancy,
I am curious. You are one of if not the biggest Perry supporter among our regulars. I predicted in the article above that it would be difficult for a Perry supporter to watch the video. How much of it were you able to watch?
October 30th, 2011 at 6:55 pm
Good grief. This appears to be a site rampant with psychoanalysts.
I saw a politician who was having fun, and proud of his positions.
And, confident.
For those who ask for the proof that he was _not_ on something, please. We do not live in France — he is not guilty until proven innocent.
I am intrigued by all three newsmakers right now: Romney, Cain and Perry.
Let’s see what happens over the month of November and the next handful of debates.
Competition is a good thing. . . .
October 30th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
I watch the video posted here and then I watched the entire speech. When you watch the entire speech it is not a bit strange, the parts of the speech posted here were just that only a part and taken out of context to make his speech seem strange. Not sure who posted this portion of the speech here but if you saw the entire speech and in the setting it would be different, not that you would like it ( or him) any better. Possiblity someone from HuffPost spliced it together or someone else??? I am a strong supporter of Perry, you got that right. There are 80% of Republicans that have not made up their minds. I think 56 or 58% in Iowa have not decided.
I am a senior citizen and have seen a lot of election cycles so I know to always hang in there, it’s not over until it’s over.
I appreciate that you love your candidate, that is what makes this such a great country , we have the right to vote for our choice for who we would love to see as our President. We must never lose sight of that.
Perry 2012!!
October 30th, 2011 at 8:36 pm
Nancy,
Next time, could you please provide a link to your rebuttal — in this case the video of the full speech? I had to go searching for it.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:02 pm
How would you know that she’s a nice person? She’s just an anonymous person posting on the Internet. She could be one of Perry’s money shuffling cronies living high off the hog because of the secret deals with Perry. Or she could actually be a nice person. We have no way of knowing.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:05 pm
Over on Intrade, Perry is predicted at 50% of dropping out by midnight ET Feb 5, 2012. It had been at 10% previous to Oct 23 when it jumped to 25%. I think this video has moved the marker, because this jump to 50% happened last night.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:20 pm
75. Wow! I never even knew that was a category.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:35 pm
#74 Frank, I had a big laugh at what you said that I might be working for Perry and living high off the hog.
I am retired and live on a retirement income. I believe Perry is the person this country needs to get people working again. His energy independence plan is a must for this country, his tax plan will be good for everyone. There are 14 million people without jobs and Obama does not have a clue as to what to do. My children and their spouses still have their jobs , they have been blessed during these economic tough times.
Go Perry!!
October 30th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
Well, I thought he did a pretty decent job for being sauced and having a below average intellect. I think he still deserves a chance. Americans are kind that way. Give the boy a chance to sober up and try again.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
Everyone falls of the horse a few times. And I don’t believe Cain is a lecher either. He’s a decent, Christian man. These attacks are to be expected. Obama smokes, Perry drinks excessively. George Bush was at AAA for several years. Maybe Perry can fix his wagon that way too.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:41 pm
Nancy, has guv Perry said why he’s into toll roads so much, and why the property tax has to be so darn high in Texas? We won’t move to Texas until it’s free again, and my husband works out of Texas. We tried to move, but it’s too high priced. California has lower property tax and no toll roads, for goodness sakes. And the people are just as friendly.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:42 pm
Weather is better in CA. Schools stink though.
Texas probably has better schools, though that’s not hard to do. Good steak, too. Vegan stuff in CA.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:59 pm
I finally had a chance to watch this video and I am utterly speechless. I was alternately laughing/cringing. How is it possible this guy is a serious contender for President of the United States? I’m completely at a loss for words right now. Wow. Just wow.
Rick Perry folks! MAKING TEXAS PROUD!!!!!!!
October 30th, 2011 at 11:11 pm
82. Again, my favorite part was how he gushed and practically hugged the little bottle of maple syrup! LOL
October 31st, 2011 at 12:22 am
I watched the whole speech and then just the spliced together version.
He looks drunk to me whether the speech is viewed in totality or the edited version and the last thing America needs right now is a Boris Yeltsin in the White House.
If this Texas cowboy spends his 15 million running the ruthless attack ads against Romney as he reportedly plans, I think Team Romney needs to spend a few bucks to air some of this footage.
October 31st, 2011 at 12:38 am
He seems to come off like he’s drunk, maybe he’s just nervous, but I think we can all agree that this is the kind of stuff that should give sleepless nights to any conservative betting the farm on Perry.
October 31st, 2011 at 12:43 am
77. Actually, I was going to say, “She could be a bank robber for all you know,” but I changed my mind.
October 31st, 2011 at 12:49 am
Wow, this was not a good day for Perry or for Cain.
You know who that helps?
Seriously, though, what is wrong with Fox News? Why do they hate Romney so much? I saw a headline that had Brit going after Romney now. What is with that?
October 31st, 2011 at 1:13 am
I just watched Perry on Fox News Sunday.
Similar to debates, he started strong and got worse as time went on.
I thought Wallace did a pretty good job of holding him accountable for his answers.
About 21 minutes into it, the question came up about subsidies. Perry said he’s against federal subsidies of energy. Chris asked him about the letter her wrote to Bush in 2008 asking for subsidies for a particular nuclear plant.
Perry said, “Well, I’ve changed positions on that.” So much for his consistency.
He also had pretty bad answers about his tax plan. He promised 2.5 million jobs. Wallace said, “That’s terrible. That wouldn’t even keep up with population growth.” Perry said something along the lines, I’m not going to let people tear down this plan. I’m not going to debate these small issues. We’ll have plenty of jobs.
On reducing taxes for the rich, his only answer was, “I’m not going to get into class warfare”.
Overall, he SOUNDED good but what he SAID made very little sense.
October 31st, 2011 at 1:47 am
Is this really worse than his debate performances? I don’t think so. I think this is relaxed Perry, and debate Perry is tense and overstressed.
October 31st, 2011 at 1:53 am
89. If that was to me, no, I don’t think his interview was near as bad as his debates.
He did look relaxed and well prepared. Just not very good answers in support of his tax plan and his admission that he changed his position on subsidies after insisting he was very consistent.
He also mellowed his attack against Romney while still insisting Romney was on both sides of a lot of issues.
October 31st, 2011 at 1:56 am
89. OH! You meant his speech that the FPP is about! Sorry about that.
Still, no. This speech was not near as bad as his debates.
But, I’ve been around mildly stoned people and he showed many of the same symptoms. Mood swings. Slurring. Thinking minor silly things are very funny. And, being choked up at a small gift of maple syrup.
Could be nothing. But, I too, found it a bit bizarre.
October 31st, 2011 at 2:14 am
I saw some of Perry on Fox News Sunday, and he spoke in complete sentences. That’s a big improvement for Rick, who is clearly a basket case.
October 31st, 2011 at 1:19 pm
He is definitely either drunk or overmedicated, I can spot it a mile away. His words are even slurring. What a shame and disgrace..

Strangely, I like him more after watching the video. Of course, I have a little issue with falling for dudes who like the sauce…yee haw. He was kinda cute, kinda sweet and silly. I would like to party with the guy but not so much with him having the nuclear codes.

Ok people. This is my Governor…he’s a native Texan and an Aggie…this is how we roll. What kind of perfection are you expecting from someone? None of the candidates are perfect. Do you want him to only speak like he has a stick up his back side? I’d much rather him be animated when he wants. He’s not ON anything, he’s showing a different side. He can and does speak seriously. Cut him some slack, he’s real.

Drunk? I don’t think so. I am more inclined to think that privately he is funny and good at horsing-around and he decided this approach to erase his dull previous image. Did he overdo it? Maybe so. Is that important? Well, there are worse things in my opinion. By the way, he is not my favorite candidate.Romney is and I still want to know more about him.
