HOMEWOOD, Ala. — Herman Cain’s rise in the polls appears to be no fluke.
Unlike some other Republican presidential contenders who have flamed out after auditioning as the conservative antidote to Mitt Romney, Cain is still riding high atop public opinion surveys.
“They said I was the flavor of the week,” the Georgia businessman said at an appearance Friday on a campaign swing through Alabama. “But four weeks later the Cain campaign still tastes good!”
“Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain kicked off a day of appearances in Alabama on Saturday with a win at the West Alabama Straw Poll at the Bryant Conference Center.
“In his speech, Cain touched on a number of issues, including foreign policy, immigration and the economy, offering his 9-9-9 tax plan as a way to lower costs and simplify the tax system.
Even after hearing his speech, for which they obviously attended the event, he received only half the votes.
Perhaps the same thing it says about the winners of the past two “important” Iowa Straw polls — Romney & Bachmann — who then proceeded to immediately fall on their faces and become irrelevant.
Cain 23%
Romney 22%
Paul 12%
Bachmann 08%
Perry 07%
Gingrich 07%
No surprise here. Mitt is stuck at his number and there he shall stay. Iowa never treats their candidates better the 2nd time around. GHB, Dole & McCain all did worse their 2nd time through the state and so will Mitt. The question who is the candidate that will rise above Romney to grab the Hawkeye Brass Ring?
“Romney has campaigned in Iowa just three times this year.”
Romney still got 22%. Considering that Cain still has no money and no organization nationally or in any of the early states, if anyone seriously thinks he is a viable candidate at this point, they are dreaming.

I doubt Cain or Romney wins IA, but then who will? If Cain does win it there will be an unholy war waged against him in SC. Frankly, I think there will be a move to prevent him from winning IA, simply because he is probably unelectable. Not because he is unqualified, but because he is unprepared, particularly in foreign policy.
#23 – They may amount to the same thing, but I view a person unqualified by experience and perhaps depth. Unprepared is just that – lack of preparation to assume the duties of president.
I wonder why Ron Paul spoke at this one instead of at the major straw poll in Iowa where he came in a close second of those bused in from outside the state but finished with 14% to Ron Paul’s 82% of those actually from Iowa voting in the straw poll? I mean, it wasn’t from lack of trying, msnbc reports that Cain’s campaign folks stood in the lobby with free tickets to give out, but no takers, in Iowa.
That straw poll wasn’t as interesting as the one in Tuscaloosa, I take it?
sorry, meant I wonder why CAIN spoke at this one (the one in Tuscalosa) not Ron Paul. It would seem with Iowa caucuses being 60 days away, Cain would have been there, not the only candidate in Alabama.
Herman Cain the guy who just said “China is developing nuclear capabilities, and is becoming a threat”
China has had nuclear capabilities for 50 years and has 240 nukes. Boy I sure will feel safe with him in office.
Check out this link and meet the real Herman Cain.
I have read some good stuff here. Definitely value bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how so much attempt you place to make such a fantastic informative web site.

They forgot to poll Hunstman?? I demand a recount! I bet he has triple Johnson and Santorum’s support – combined!
October 29th, 2011 at 5:18 pm
why do we have these straw polls again?
October 29th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
Huntsman and Bachmann were on the ballot, but they got zero votes. Johnson and Santorum got 1 vote each.
October 29th, 2011 at 5:31 pm
I see that the Ron Paul “ultra spam” crowd gave him 45% of the votes, while Top Tier candidate Mitt Romney received only 1%.
With 51%, the Hermanator apparently has his own spam crowd. If he needs that sort of thing, it does not bode well for him winning the nomination.

Plus, Cain seems to have actively competed in the AL straw poll. He has visited there recently, and I suppose this was the reason.
October 29th, 2011 at 5:49 pm
What about the iowa straw poll with more voters? Why would you not post that?
October 29th, 2011 at 6:30 pm
Wow! 2 man results. I wonder what that says about Alabama. Or, about the straw poll.

I guess you’ve never heard of the famous Paulbotkids who try to rig every straw or internet poll in America that Ron Paul’s name appears.
Only this time they failed to overcome the Cain Train

DMR Iowa Poll
Cain 23%
Romney 22%
Paul 12%
Bachmann 08%
Perry 07%
Gingrich 07%

22% is a horrible number for Romney.
October 29th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Crosstabs should be an interesting read….very interesting.
October 29th, 2011 at 7:18 pm
I predicted this order exactly with the exception of Gingrich, who I thought would clear double digits too.
October 29th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
In 2007 the Iowa DMR poll had Romney at 24% in November and 26% in December. Romney finished with 25.2%
Romney’s Iowa numbers for this Caucus will be around 22-23%.
Good for 2nd, not for first.
Cain will fall below him…Newt will rise above.
October 29th, 2011 at 7:21 pm
8. Probably the best scenario conceivable is for it to end up as a 2 man race between Mitt and Cain. I would be a very happy camper.
October 29th, 2011 at 7:24 pm
From the Des Moines Register -
“Romney has campaigned in Iowa just three times this year.”
Romney still got 22%. Considering that Cain still has no money and no organization nationally or in any of the early states, if anyone seriously thinks he is a viable candidate at this point, they are dreaming.
Romney has Iowa locked up!
October 29th, 2011 at 7:34 pm
16. Newt, with a whopping 7% in the DMR poll, will shoot up 20 points to beat Romney?
That would mean the DMR poll is incredibly inaccurate, kind of like your predictions are incredibly inaccurate.
Hey Smack, did I mention that your man Christie has endorsed Romney?
October 29th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
This is excellent news for Romney. Whether he actually comes in first, or not (not likely, btw), he’s going to be happy with this.
