Romney to Announce $11-13 Million For Q3

From the Boston Globe:

Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is on pace to raise between $11 million and $13 million for the latest fund-raising quarter, a haul that would be much lower than the $18.2 million haul he brought in during the previous three months, according to a source familiar with the campaign’s finances.

Romney’s strong performance in a trio of recent debates had helped his fund-raising by motivating his existing supporters, but it was not enough to move some of the fence-sitters over to his camp, according to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the campaign has not publicly released its numbers yet…

Romney aides have predicted that his top campaign rival – Texas Governor Rick Perry – will raise more than he will, even though Perry has been in the race for only six weeks.

It’s difficult to compare with the 2007-08 race since this time around the campaign began so late. But in 2007, Romney raised $21, $14, and $10 million in the first three quarters of the year. In 2011 there are no Q1 figures, but Romney raised $18 and $13 million in Q2 and Q3, respectively.

The Globe also notes Ron Paul is expected to announce around $5 million, and Bachmann has said she will not announce anything until the reports are filed with the FEC on October 15. Based on previous reports, Perry is expected to announce raising somewhere between $10 and $20 million, and it is almost certain now that Perry will report more than Romney. The question now is: will it matter?

  1. Husky Says:

I’m going to give Romney $10 bucks today and the thousands of Rombots on this site ought to as well. Donating to Romney does 2 great things.

    1. It helps Romney win
    2. It helps annoy the crap out of Soujourner and Craig for losers when Romney does well

Open up your wallet and give a little bit of money.

  2. Jeff Says:

and the answer is “a little bit.” It might slow Perry’s demise a little bit, but not much in my opinion.

  3. Greg Says:

Just donated $500 to Mitt, 60 seconds ago. You can do it right here:

    https://mittromney.com/donate/day-on-the-road-with-mitt-video/?ET_RID=1041273&ET_CID=724645

  4. Rob Says:

Whatever Perry’s figures are, it would be interesting to see how well he has done after the last debate. I would imagine the numbers would have gone down after he had a stroke on stage.

  5. CC Says:

yeah…….maybe some of those big donors put a “stop” on their check!! ;-P

  6. Bloodshy Says:

Low hanging fruit is low hanging fruit. Everyone knew Perry would get a bundle of cash upon entry. $10M was probably available the moment he announced in SC. The more interesting question is how much he’ll haul in during Q4 after his very unimpressive September.

  7. Jeff Says:

3, Greg, good for you. :)

4, Rob, it would also be interesting to see if Romney saw a boost after the debate.

  8. Perry/Jeb for 2012! Says:

LOL! Perry will easily beat that in half the time! Ha!

  9. Matt "MWS" Says:

Kind of weak all the way around. I suspect that all the flirts on the sidelines, as well as die hard groupies (I’m looking at you, Christie Clingers) are holding a lot of the progress of this campaign up.

    My guesses:

    Perry $13 million
    Romney $12 million
    Paul $5 million
    Cain $2.5 million
    Huntsman $2 million
    Bachmann $1.5 million
    Santorum $1 million
    Newt $1 million

  10. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Craig,

Did you give more to Michele or Rick this quarter?

  11. Matt "MWS" Says:

I’m also guessing that Huntsman is low on cash, Santorum and Newt are basically broke, and Bachmann has negative cash on hand.

  12. ogrepete Says:

    Wow, Greg (#3).

    Way to go!!!

Wish I had an extra $500 to give. I don’t think I’ll reach $300 by the end of the primaries, though.

  13. Bloodshy Says:

    8. “LOL! Perry will easily beat that in half the time! Ha!”

When you consider the low hanging fruit received @ entry + Perry’s deep support of crony capitalism, Perry should be expected to do well on donations. Everyone donating knows a government grant is already in the works worth 10x what they were willing to donate–whether in TX or @ the federal level.

  14. Perry/Jeb for 2012! Says:

In a debate at the Women’s Voter Forum in 1980, Ronald Reagan responded to a question about whether the U.S. should allow the children of undocumented immigrants to be in public schools by noting that immigration has to be dealt with in a comprehensive and humane way. Reagan reminded debate viewers that immigrants who are working here are going to be paying taxes here too and dismissed the idea of a border fence.

REAGAN then said, “Rather than talking about putting up a fence, why don’t we work out some recognition of our mutual problems? Make it possible for them to come here legally with a work permit. And then, while they’re working and earning here they can pay taxes here. And then when they want to go back, they can go back. Open the borders both ways.”

Perry is the only candidate even close to Reagan on immigration. He is closest to Reagan’s views on most issues. :)

  15. Smack1968 Says:

    HOLY SMOKE!!!!

    SMACK BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!

    NO JOKE!!!!

    SMACK BREAKING NEWS!!!!

    Ok,

    Here it goes…

I just got that phone call again…the same one I got 4 weeks ago and told you all about..the one that indicated Christie was going to run…

Then of course we heard all the stuff in the last 3 weeks…

    ..well…

    ….well…..

    ..here it comes again.

I’ve got three names of MN people who are traveling down to NJ this Sunday at the request of GOV. Christie.

For those who live in MINNY..yo would recongnize one of these names..maybe all you would.

Something is happening in NJ on Sunday..this is not a joke.

I repeat this is not a joke.

I will get back to all for more info.
trying to get my arms around this before I give out more info.

    Stay alert!

  16. CF Says:

Let me guess. If Perry outraises Romney, we won’t hear a -peep- about his crony capitalism or his connections to big bad rich people from Sojourner or Craig as they did about Romney yesterday.

  17. Mark in PA Says:

    9
Last time I guessed, all the talk was Mitt was going to haul in $40million. His $18 million haul was very impressive compared to everybody else, but rumors made my guesses WAY off.

    But here goes anyway…

Perry $15 million (less than $500k after last debate)
    Romney $11 million
    Paul $3.5 million
    Cain $1.8 million
    Bachmann $1.7 million
    Huntsman $1 million + $1.5 personal funds
    Newt $1 million – he’s still $500k in debt
    Santorum $750k
    Johnson $500k
    Roemer $20
    Vampire guy $2

(I donate $50 to Mitt every month)

  18. Smack1968 Says:

ooopes..two names. I got two names going to NJ on Sunday. But the third one is involved.

    JAAAYYYSUS!!!

    Im expecting a call 3:30PM.

I will get back to you.

  19. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    #14 –

And Reagan was wrong. He tried the Amnesty route, the “humane” route, the “have a heart” route.

It failed miserable. We ended up with millions more illegal immigrants, more peopel in this country who don’t know our language, more people driving down wages, etc.

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

  20. Perry/Jeb for 2012! Says:

    “Huntsman $2 million”

LOL! $2mil is only half possible if ‘Junior Evolution’ has his allowance limit immediately raised this week by his Father — who I believe was/is a Willardist.

  21. Watchinitall Says:

Perry’s going to face a dilemma: First class or campaign advertising? I think he’ll stick with first class. It’s what he’s grown accustomed to over the years. Call it “Austin Austerity”.

  22. Mark in PA Says:

    14
Reagan also raised taxes while in office. The man was wrong on a couple different things. Perry really should be more Reagan-like on the good stuff, eh??

  23. Perry/Jeb for 2012! Says:

    15.

Don’t you ever get tired of being 100% wrong about Pawlenty, Iowa, and Christie?

  24. Watchinitall Says:

Smack, why are important people giving you their travel itinerary? Is your wife a hairdresser?

  25. Bloodshy Says:

    14. “Perry is the only candidate even close to Reagan on immigration.”

Perry is close to where Reagan was when he signed the amnesty bill. That signing turned out to be on Reagan’s list of four great regrets as president.

As for the fence, I’m actually w/Perry on that one–I think a fence over 2k miles is a bad idea. Strategic fencing + electronic surveillance + enforcement @ the border & w/employers is the way to go. My problem w/Perry are the massive magnets for illegals that he has created–including ensuring them job security. He also had a chance to support AZ in a meaningful way early on, but lightly criticized AZ instead–he joined their lawsuit later out of political expediency only after several other states got involved first.

This is what Perry’s stance on immigration has caused in Texas: http://campaign2012.washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/study-most-new-texas-jobs-went-immigrants

  26. marK Says:

    Smack,

    *yawn*

If Christie wants to get in, more power to him. I think it would be a big mistake, but hey, he’s an adult. He can make his own decisions. Few people can resist the siren song of fame and glory, and he has been under a lot of pressure recently to change his mind.

When you consider that Mike Huckabee walked away from the race when all the polls were showing him on top, you have to admire the integrity of the man.

  27. Smack1968 Says:

Someone very important in MN GOP politics is my best friend who gets me to volunteer many different jobs over the last 30 years. He works in the red brick building off of HWY 280 in St. Paul…if anyone here is from MINNY and has worked for the GOP they know what building I’m talking about.

    This is real.

This is the same guy who told me Sarah Sanders was hired by TPAW 3 weeks before it was known in public. This is the guy who called me the night before the MN GOV race in 1998 amd told me Ventura was going to win. Everything I have leaked from this source has turned out to be true.

This guy leaked to me the Christie stuff four weeks ago and I put it on RACE42012..then the main press picked up on it a week later.

Something is happening in NJ on Sunday. My source won’t tell me everything to make sure it doesn’t bounce back to him…but he lets me know if I’m waaayyyy off base.

He told me it’s happening..and now I’m telling you.

    Stay alert!

    More info coming.

  28. Perry/Jeb for 2012! Says:

    Currently at INTRADE:

Chances of Whinin’, Complainin’ Palin running = 19%
Chances of McCain Clone, Christie running = 17.4%

    Bet away, lose away!

  29. thetruth Says:

    26

Don’t worry, Smack is just trying to manipulate Intrade enough he can unload what he bought last week!

  30. Matthew Kilburn Says:

If Perry runs now, he looks like to a fool to everyone except the anti-Romney clowns. You don’t decide that you MIGHT AS WELL run for PResident. period.

  31. thetruth Says:

    28
and perry is down to what, 24??

  32. Smack1968 Says:

    29#,

I wish I was that smart.

    :)

  33. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    damn, I did it again.

    Christie.

  34. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

Smack, Christie is not going to run. He said it very clearly at the Reagan Library.

Maybe an endorsement is in the works.

  35. thetruth Says:

    34
where is Romney going to be on that date?

  36. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    35

    Not sure

  37. aerofanatic Says:

Christie endorses Romney in NJ on Sunday. Takes Perry’s cash haul out of the news, and solidifies Romney’s front runner status. Had to roll this out a tad earlier to stent Cain’s rising.

  38. Booyeah Says:

Could it be a famous Minnesotan is going to New Jersey to help a New Jerseyite join an effort in which the Minnesotan is already actively involved?

If there’s an endorsement Sunday, I’ll explode.

  39. Hmmm? Says:

Since Perry’s a poker player, he knows “Ya gotta know when to fold ‘em”. Question is, will he use what’s left in his war chest to “balance” the TX budget again this year? I’m sure he’ll find a way. He’s pretty good at laundering donations.

  40. Jeff Says:

That would be incredible (not to mention it MIGHT actually convince the media that Christie isn’t running. I can hope, can’t I? :P )

  41. Dr J Says:

This is weird. I’ve seen Smack get excited before, but he has topped himself.

  42. Still Hurting Says:

How do you compare Perry’s fundraising to Romney?

If he raises $15MM and Romney raises $13MM, he out-raised Romney Q3/Q2, but under-raised him Perry’s first quarter to Romney’s first quarter.

And no matter what, As of now, Romney will have raised >$30MM to Perry’s $15MM, and all the cash on issues that entails. Given that we only have three months till the first caucus, what you have in the bank, and what kind of organizational strength you have, at this point, will be very important.

  43. Rick Perry/Jeb Bush 2012! Says:

INTRADE’s current numbers — win two of three of these and the nomination since 1980:

    Iowa Caucus (Republican)

    Rick Perry to win the
    2012 Iowa Caucus M Trade 37.9%

    Michele Bachmann to win the
    2012 Iowa Caucus M Trade 15.5%

    Mitt Romney to win the
    2012 Iowa Caucus M Trade 21.0%

Bragging rights for MWS’s liberal candidate, Junior Hunts..:

    New Hampshire Primary (Republican)

    Mitt Romney to win the
    2012 New Hampshire Primary M Trade 75.0%

    Rick Perry to win the
    2012 New Hampshire Primary M Trade 8.0%

    Jon Huntsman to win the
    2012 New Hampshire Primary M Trade 8.0%

Our top three in SC — but Perry should pick up the lion’s share of Palin’s fans now that she has quit again:

    South Carolina Primary (Republican)

    Rick Perry to win the
    2012 South Carolina Primary M Trade 40.0%

    Mitt Romney to win the
    2012 South Carolina Primary M Trade 28.0%

    Sarah Palin to win the
    2012 South Carolina Primary M Trade 6.2%

  44. Smack1968 Says:

Just got off my 3:30 call.

There is a meeting in NJ on Christie’s plans for the immediate future.

The circle of who is going to be there is too big…too big for Status Quo.

That is the word…. breaking now!

It sounds like from a source that this info is not being contained.

Look for new sources to pick this up quickly.

    I will have more later.

    I will have more later.

  46. Rick Perry/Jeb Bush 2012! Says:

    25.

Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio call the Texas In-State Tuition Law similar to Florida’s Fair Policy.

It looks like tacit endorsements of Gov Perry at this point with more to follow.

From the from National Journal report on Jeb Bush’s email to fellow Republican:

“With Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry under attack for supporting tuition breaks for children of illegal immigrants, former Gov. Jeb Bush on Tuesday offered some solidarity by calling a similar proposal in Florida “fair policy

I think that is a fair policy,” Bush said in an e-mail to National Journal on Tuesday, adding that the students who benefit from the tuition breaks find themselves in the United States through “no fault of their own.”

“About one dozen states offer some form of tuition assistance to the children of illegal immigrants. Rubio, the son of Cuban exiles, was the co-sponsor of such a bill in 2003 and 2004, before he became speaker of the Florida state House. Bush, whose wife was born and raised in Mexico and who speaks fluent Spanish, also championed the legislation.”

  47. Ben (One of those MittWits) Says:

Smacks rumors and NY Post link creating a Max Twain FPP in 3……..2……….1……..

  48. Tom in SoCal Says:

Christie will have a lot of explaining to do if he reverses his decision to run. I for one would question his resolve.

And if he is a squishy on the social issues as I have read, he could be running into a buzz saw.

  49. Booyeah Says:

If any of this is true, I have to believe he will ultimately side with fulfilling his promise to the people of New Jersey.

  50. Dr J Says:

There’s talk on the street; it sounds so familiar
    Great expectations, everybody’s watching you
People you meet, they all seem to know you
Even your old friends treat you like you’re something new

Johnny come lately, the new kid in town
Everybody loves you, so don’t let them down

  51. Matt Coulter Says:

    Smack,

What big names out of Minnesota would be involved with Christie’s plans for his immediate future? Can’t you give us addicted political nerds a few hints at least?

  52. Tom in SoCal Says:

    50

    Great Eagles song.

  53. Tom in SoCal Says:

    51

These are probably the sames ones floating the rumor that Christie would announce the RR library.

  54. Rick Perry/Jeb Bush 2012! Says:

    44.

    Smacks,

How much have you had to drink today?

    Lost count?

  55. Rick Perry/Jeb Bush 2012! Says:

    Palin and Christie devotees,

And when you’re looking for your freedom
    (Nobody seems to care)
And you can’t find the door
    (Can’t find it anywhere)
When there’s nothing to believe in
Still you’re coming back, you’re running back
    You’re coming back for more

So put me on a highway
    And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
    One more time

    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
    One more time

    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
    Take it to the limit
    One more time

  56. Smack1968 Says:

    Matt Coulter,

    Weaver….

That’s all I’m going to say at this point when it comes to names. If you do your work you will know who I’m talking about.

People are getting on an airplane to be in NJ for Sunday.

I think I can give you the flight number….no I’m not joking.

Stay tuned Matt. RACE2012 will have it first.

  57. Smack1968 Says:

I have been given the following information:

DELTA #2196 going from Minneapolis to LaGuardia.

    Not time, no date….nothing else.

    Can someone check this out?

What’s the best way to do this?

  58. Booyeah Says:

    It’s on it’s way to New Jersey…

    http://www.delta.com/flifo/servlet/DeltaFlifo?airline_code=DL&flight_number=2196&flight_date=09/29/2011&request=main

  59. Booyeah Says:

Or, New York. Pretty close, though.

Who is on this flight? Is it T-Paw?

  60. Matt Coulter Says:

Well, DL 2196 runs routinely between MSP and LGA. That flight departs MSP every afternoon at 3:11 and arrives at LGA at 6:56 pm. It runs today, tomorrow, and Saturday.

  61. Smack1968 Says:

Thanks Booyeah..just figured it out myself….I’m knida of slow.

No TPAW….but his Senior staff is signing on according to this info.

Huuummmmmmm..arriving on Saturday. I guess that makes sense..but it’s New York..does that make sense?

Do people traveing to NJ go to LaGuardia first?

I guess the only thing to do is wait for some kind of confirmation from a News Source. NY POST does not mention Sunday meeting..but my guy has who is going..what plane….and why.

    Stay alert.

I will continue to give info…I keep asking…he keeps leaking.

  62. Matt Coulter Says:

What would Weaver want with Christie? Looking to leave his lobbying business to try his hand at national politics?

  63. Booyeah Says:

So T-Paw’s senior staff is “signing on?” Onto what? A campaign?

Or they’re getting on the plane.

  64. Sojourner Truth Says:

Rick Santorum: Romney is NOT conservative.

“The problem with Mitt Romney is that his positions on a lot — listen to his answer on the issue of education. He was standing behind the federal government’s involvement in education. You see a predilection to supporting these top-down solutions to problems that conservatives generally don’t support. So, I don’t call it compassionate conservative, I just call it not conservative. When you have a governor of a state who says that it was right for Massachusetts to have government control of the health care system, it’s not right for any state because it’s not how America functions best. And while it may be right in the sense that that’s what the Democrats in Massachusetts wanted, it didn’t mean it was right for the state to do it that way,” Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) said on the Laura Ingraham program today.

  65. Liz Says:

Thanks to Obama, we’re all broke. I guess I can part with a few bucks today. Thanks for the inspiration.

  66. Smack1968 Says:

    Matt Coulter,

Is that how people get to New Jersey?..through LaGuardia? Does that make sense to you.

I have no idea but it would be interesting to see if one of you North Easterners could help us out.

  67. Rightgal. Says:

    TPaw already endorsed Mitt.

  68. Smack1968 Says:

    63# Everything points to Christie.

We are just probing on something that was given to me today…and four weeks ago.

Would someone who wanted to meet the Gov of NJ fly into LaGuardia first? I’m just trying to poke holes into this info.

  69. Sojourner Truth Says:

Smack – how do you reconcile that with the fact that Christie said essentially that you have to want to run for president deep within your gut…..and that he just doesn’t want to?

  70. Smack1968 Says:

    This is not about TPAW.

This is all about info that has been given to me about a meeting happening in NJ about a Presidential run by Christie.

I can’t ignore this info..so what i do is put it out here with you guys.

Now tell me..does it make sense to go to LaGuardia first when traveling to NJ?

  71. Matt Coulter Says:

Smack, I’m not from the northeast, but it would seem that to get to Trenton you’d fly into Newark or LaGuardia. Newark is a little closer, but maybe the flight to LGA is more convenient? Don’t know.

I’m assuming since Weaver was mentioned we’re talking T-Paw’s senior staff from his Governor days, not from his Pres candidacy?

  72. Smack1968 Says:

    69#

I’m not trying to reconcile this….I’m not putting a value on this..no judgement.

We are mining a vein of information…seeing if it holds up.

Now tell me..does it make sense to go to LaGuardia first when traveling to NJ from MN?

  73. Jeff Says:

69, the only way he could pull it off is if he convinces everyone that the meeting at the Reagan Library and meeting with others has touched him and given him the deep desire to run.

    I really doubt it, though.

  74. Smack1968 Says:

    Matt,

    Ok..so LaGuardia is logical..at leat.

“I’m assuming since Weaver was mentioned we’re talking T-Paw’s senior staff from his Governor days, not from his Pres candidacy?

    Yep…you are correct.

I’m going to give you another name later tonight. I’m checking this thing out. This is real.

  75. hamaca Says:

Newark is closer. LaGuardia is a couple of hours out of the way, but doable.

  76. Mark in PA Says:

    Smack,

Thanks for making this thread much more interesting.

Up here in the northeast, everything is so close that there are probably half a dozen airports you could fly into to get to NJ, if Newark didn’t have the best prices or best times, that is.

  77. Watchinitall Says:

    64. Let’s watch the logic unravel:

Establish a requirement to have private health insurance = government control.

Establish stoplights and crosswalks = government control

This is the lazy, non-conservative thinking of people who are no longer tethered to principle, but to rhetoric only. I swear, why don’t you just join the rabble calling for Palin to run and enjoy the rhetoric ride? No annoying principles involved at all. No prioritization, just latch onto something simple like “Taxes are Bad!”, and everything that says anything different isn’t “Conservative”.

  78. hamaca Says:

It’s gotta be hard to resist jumping in when you’ve got people telling you it’s your calling and that you can win. Hopefully he’s smart enough to realize that it’s more than a few speeches and debates. I don’t think Perry got in with his eyes wide open.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/64754.html

  79. Watchinitall Says:

    64. Santorum has to attack Romney now that Perry is like the cowboy from “The Indian in the Cupboard” sized opponent.

Look for rhetoric like this to continue. Is it conservative to shut down national parks? is it conservative to stop clean water regulation? Is it conservative to end Highway safety regulation? Is it conservative to end Food and Drug Administration oversight of pharmaceuticals?

How long a list of absolutely essential government services that are neither liberal or conservative, and simply (dare I use the word) mandatory for survival in a complex modern world does one have to put up before it’s screamingly obvious that the far end of the screamers are startig to make the rest of us look crazy by association.

Is Santorum your new champ? Fine. Wear him then. And be prepared for a very weird ride on the outside of normal.

  80. Sojourner Truth Says:

Establish a requirement to have private health insurance = government control.

Establish stoplights and crosswalks = government control

Because the centuries-old practice of using tax dollars for crosswalks for public safety is exactly the same as forcing someone to buy a product they may not want.

  81. Sojourner Truth Says:

Is Santorum your new champ? Fine. Wear him then. And be prepared for a very weird ride on the outside of normal.

Santorum my champ? No. Anyone that knocks Mitt out of contention for nomination is my champ.

  82. Sojourner Truth Says:

How long a list of absolutely essential government services that are neither liberal or conservative, and simply (dare I use the word) mandatory for survival in a complex modern world

We seem to have gotten along just fine without the health insurance mandate. In fact, Massachusetts was already 92%+ insured and now the program is bankrupting the state.

Maybe instead of throwing out the boogeyman that conservatives want to abandon every government program ever created it would just be in our interests to nominate someone who won’t happily create new ones that aren’t necessary.

  83. Texas Conservative Says:

    MattC, Thanks for the spin.

I believe the reason Romney’s numbers are down from 2007/2008 has to do with the Romney malaise.

Sure Romney might end up being the nominee. And Romney supporters are screaming-WILL BE THE NOMINEE.

But non-Romney groupies had Romney as their 3rd or 4th choice amongst both declared and non-declared candidates.

That is why there is still a cry for others to get into the race.

People will end up voting for Romney if they have to. But they would rather have had another choice. Hence the slow donations trickling in to Mitt’s coffers.

It has nothing to do with the race starting later-your spin.

We all know that Romney started his 2012 campaign in February 2008. He started earlier than everyone.

I would imagine that if Perry continues to falter and Cain’s momentum is stopped, that Romney will gain the eventual funds from reluctant 2012 donors.

  84. Tom in SoCal Says:

    79 & 80

Let’s state this in the way that it is happening today.

Establish stoplight and crosswalk = government control

This is true when the Federal government mandates the size, color, wheelchair access, etc. of stoplights and crosswalks. In that case it is definitely government control.

  85. Mark in PA Says:

Everyone keeps saying “buy a product that person doesn’t want.”. Well, there are traffic laws that some people don’t want to obey. They’re in place to protect other people from the reckless people who would endanger others if those rules and crosswalks etc weren’t there. Kinda like not getting insurance and then expecting others to pay when you get sick… The mandate protects others.

    84
I agree that Obama’s idea of exactly what gov controlled insurance you should buy (ultimately single payer) is gov over reach. Mitt’s market based insurance mandate isn’t the same thing at all.

  86. Watchinitall Says:

Good. Cost benefit analysis. Gets in the way of demagoguing. Bankrupting MA. Nope, not by any impartial look at things. But facts get in the way, and in a complicated world there’s lots of facts begging for the spin of rhetoric to help folks think. Maddening. Is there a savings in having ordinary healthcare? Long term? Do we know yet? Less emergency care? How long does it take to know? The Bush admin encouraged Mass to experiment to see how it would help, edpecially long term. Hatred of our own is stupid. Up to now the finest efforts to reform healthcare were all Republican initiatives. Rhetoric parading as principle devoid of principle is all you have.

Regardless of the nominee, I imagine there will be reluctant donors.

  88. Greg Says:

Guys, I have it on very good authority that Christie is not running. There are issues that are personal to him that make this true. He has been getting a lot of calls from the old Bush folks and Nancy Reagan, but he will not run. He is being very nice to all of these people, even planning a huge dinner with them to thank them for their support, but he is not going to run.

  89. Spenza Says:

#85. Mark, what these clueless people are promoting is not Conservative, it’s Anarchy….unless perhaps they are only using this approach to attack Mitt, but either way it’s not Conservative to say that no one should ever be mandated to do anything. It’s a ridiculous argument.

  90. hamaca Says:

Maybe Christie sees from Perry’s experience how skeletons seem to come out of the woodwork. Maybe he has some. Perhaps none of a legal or scandalous, but one or more that he’d just as soon not come back to embarrass him. And maybe it’s something he’d like to keep to himself and not share with the pesky folks who keep encouraging him to run.

On the other hand, maybe he’s learning another lesson from Perry and from certain elements of the GOP. Certain people can jump in with a bang, go through the honeymoon, but then…it’s all downhill from there. He knows what his stances are. He also knows what people will think of them once the campaign undergoes scrutiny. If he doesn’t run, maybe he’s giving the middle finger to the very people he spoke about in his speech.

  91. K.G. Says:

#89 Clueless conservatism. People consider abortion out and out murder until you make them say what the legal penalities should be….then they are mute.

Not one conservative (that I know of) comes right out and says emergency rooms should turn people away if they don’t have insurance or cash on the barrel head. No. They mandate that ERs treat people. They mandate that the taxpayer PAY, but not the uninsured who could afford it or they would qualify for MediCal (or whatever your state is).

There is so much hypocrisy on the left, but the right is not immune. Put on your thinking caps, people.

  92. K.G. Says:

#90 Christie’s a lot smarter than Perry. Plus, if you were that combative “boy from Jersey” what’s easier and more fun? Kicking as- in NJ or feeling “shakle-ly” in the oval office?

I don’t know what kind of person actually wants to be POTUS, but I do know you have to really, really want it. I like Mitt because for some reason he really, really wants to do it. Maybe it’s a compulsion or challenge to fix things and clean up messes. Mitt’s not on a power trip, IMO, he’s on a mission to save the Titanic.

Like the FDNY running into a burning building. Now, maybe he can do and maybe he can’t. But he’s all in to win it and try his hand.

  93. CraigS Says:

    Ha Ha Ha

  94. Rick Perry/Jeb Bush 2012! Says:

    Split the moderates, Christie!

  95. Tony Says:

Perry’s campaign donations have peaked. He will be lucky to be in the race by the end of the next quarter. Mitt’s strategy has been “slow and steady wins the race.” It’s the same thing with his donations, which will ramp up in due time.
