Third Quarter Fundraising Rumors Begin Trickling In [UPDATED]

Believe it or not, ten days from today marks the end of the third quarter – and when the candidates’ latest fundraising efforts will be measured. The actual reports are due to the FEC on October 15, but most campaigns will unofficially release the numbers before that date. Here are the rumors that have slowly begun trickling in regarding the candidates’ totals:

  • Perry‘s campaign has indicated that they will most likely hit their $10 million goal for the third quarter, which would put them slightly above Romney’s pace from the second quarter (Romney raised $18.4 million; Perry had half the third quarter to work with).
  • Santorum‘s campaign has indicated that they will, once again, bring in less than $1 million this quarter.
  • Huntsman‘s campaign is apparently in financial shambles, if the resignation/firing of his top fundraising directors a couple weeks ago are any indication. At the same time, sources reported that Huntsman has had to loan at least an additional $500,000 to the campaign just to make payroll this month (he loaned the campaign roughly $2 million last quarter). Huntsman has also moved his resources out of the expensive state of Florida, into the smaller and less expensive state of New Hampshire – where he will make his final stand a la McCain 2008. If he makes it that far.

The real focus, of course, will be on whether or not Romney and Perry can keep pace with one another’s fundraising. Everything else will be a sideshow.

This fundraising report, however, has historically been another winnowing mark for the field. In 2008, Sam Brownback dropped out of the race after releasing his Q3 numbers. In 2000, Elizabeth Dole did the same.(Also in 2000, Pat Buchanan famously dropped out after the Q3 reports to run on the Reform Party ticket.) So the question this time around is: will anyone drop out, and if so, who?

UPDATE: A “source close to” the Romney campaign tells Reuters that Romney’s third quarter figure is likely to be less than $10 million. If Perry raises more than Romney, in half the time, expect Perry to gain a lot of momentum (along with the support of some big money men in the party).

  1. Perry/Haley for 2012! Says:

    Hee-Haw!!

Perry‘s campaign has indicated that they will most likely hit their $10 million goal for the third quarter :)

  2. Firecracker (Romney/West) Says:

Actually Romney entered the race in the 2nd quarter as Perry entered into the 3rd quarter. Romney also had about half of the second quarter when he raised $18 million.

  3. Jeff Says:

I’m really excited for Q3 numbers to come out. The field will narrow, and it will be fascinating to see how Perry and Romney both do overall.

  4. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

I don’t think anyone’s going to drop out until 2012.

  5. randomsmell Says:

LOL they trying to say perry is outpacing romney in fundraising, perrys own advisors admited they cant beat mitt in that kinda race, and not only that, the 10 mil they r bragging about, mitt romney raised in 1 DAY! LOL is that really outpacing mitt romney if it took perry half a month to raise it and only mitt romney 1 day to raise it

  6. Steven S Says:

If Huntsman isn’t included in a debate, he might as well just go out and endorse Perry.

  7. Matthew Kilburn Says:

Hard to compare really – Romney announced his exploratory committee in mid April, but didn’t actually enter the race until June.

  8. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    Predictions:

    Romney $14 million
    Perry $12 million
    Bachmann $5 million
    Paul $3 million
    Huntsman $3 million
    Others: <$1 million

  9. randomsmell Says:

#6 steven lol good try, but huntsman would more likey endorse mitt romney my bro. not only r they both popular in utah, they r both mormons, and the media has attacked them for the same reason.

  10. MarqueG Says:

Uh-oh. Mittens has a secret message for TEX, recorded long, long ago!

  11. zeek Says:

I dont think the mormon thing has any sway concerning who Huntsman or Romney would endorse, but sadly with the political climate it would be spun that way.

  12. Jeff Says:

I think Romney will pull in more than 14, especially with all the endorsements that have come in lately. Perry will be lower because he had a fraction of the quarter, but it’ll be interesting to see how much lower. If it’s very significant, I think it could hurt him.

  13. randomsmell Says:

zeek, either way bro, mitt romney saved the salt lake olympics while huntsman was govner lol i think mitt doing that and saving the olympics which probally helped utah out with new tourist and way more income, idk, but if i was huntsman, its the way i would be thanking him

  14. Firecracker (Romney/West) Says:

Perry will be less than $10 million, Romney will be at least $14 million, if not more.

  15. Perry/Haley for 2012! Says:

    10.

    Comedy Gold!

And if you ever find a vid with ‘Sarah of the Great White arctic’ speaking the language of love, TEX & CO. with go straight to paradiso (sp).

Btw, President James Richard Perry should offer Monsieur Meettens the Ambassadorship to France — just to see the look on his face ;)

  16. MarqueG Says:

    More on the video:

[The] video proves that Romney has a rich, international resume, more so than others in the GOP presidential race.

It also highlights just how much the travels at age 19 impacted Romney, as it does for many Americans who study overseas. In fact, in a 2007 New York Times profile of his days in France, Romney’s eldest son Tagg says, “He talks about it all the time.” What’s more, Tagg told the Times, that the period of Romney’s life, “more than any other, ‘helped him become who he is now.’”

Translation: Mitt became a Euroweenie socialist at that time, came to embrace strong-state corporatism, and now strives for the government to take over every part of the economy bit by bit.

  17. Ben (One of those MittWits) Says:

I’m lost – is it bad to be bilingual?

  18. MarqueG Says:

    17. ???????!

  19. MarqueG Says:

    18. Word Press don’t do cyrillic. :-(

  20. Steven S Says:

What is Perry’s second language, jibberish?

  21. Mike Says:

    9. you forgot to mention their 3rd-freaking cousins….*might* matter….

  22. MarqueG Says:

    17. It’s not bad, but the first choice shouldn’t be the international language of surrender.

  23. Ben (One of those MittWits) Says:

Was that merely a slam on TEX Marque? or were you trying to make Mitt’s ability to speak a 2nd language as a bad thing for him?

  24. Ben (One of those MittWits) Says:

    22.

So he should have learned Spanish while he lived in France for 2 years? Huh. Makes sense to me.

  25. MarqueG Says:

TEX is our Froggie friend. ;-)

  26. MarqueG Says:

So he should have learned Spanish while he lived in France for 2 years?

Don’t be silly. When living in France, it’s best to become fluent in German. Just in case.

  27. LV Says:

If the media reports on Perry’s fundraising is to be believed, it sure didn’t sound like Perry did that well…but, it’s possible a lot of his donations could have come from on-line donations. we’ll see.

  28. Mike Says:

    8. Paul raised over a mil just this past weekend….figure probably be higher from what the Paulistinians are saying…

  29. Ben (One of those MittWits) Says:

The donors are just trying to get Perry enough money ($30K isn’t it?) to get a good rate or return on their funds. It will take some time to manipulate the political system before the $ starts flowing to his campaign. No doubt it will come in time.

  30. asparagus Says:

At this point, fundraising “pace” is irrelevant. Its all about how much you have in the bank. Mitt has deep, deep pockets.

  31. Mike Says:

    30. if that’s all that mattered….the trust fund baby from Utah would smoke flip-flop.

  32. LV Says:

    MarqueG #16

I believe Romney was in France as a missionary living on a dollar a day….He wasn’t an American university student in France learning socialism.

  33. CF Says:

    22

France was the most powerful nation on Earth for hundreds of years during the dark ages and well into the Renaissance. They had conquered most of Europe and except for England’s relative isolation, they would have easily conquered them as well.

Other than the Roman Empire, no other single state ever held as much military strength as France did for as long as they did in the history of the world.

So the next time you call French “the international language of surrender”, remember that for most of history, it was France’s enemies who were speaking “surrender” in French, not the other way around.

  34. MarqueG Says:

France was the most powerful nation on Earth for hundreds of years during the dark ages and well into the Renaissance.

We’ll seek Mitt’s help when the next dark ages befall us.

  35. Mike Says:

    33. So, let me see if I got the new history right…..historical rankings…

    1. US Empire
    2. Roman Empire
    3. FRENCH Empire
    4. Mongol Empire
    5. Hun Empire
    6. Alexander
    7. Darius

Got it….had no idea the French were so powerful…don’t remember hearing that one before…

  36. Perry/Haley for 2012! Says:

    LOL!

  37. Andrew Ryan Says:

Only Perry supporters would view fluency in a second language as a way to insult someone.

“We aint need no college kid runnin’ de country. I want ma’ pres-o-dent ta be just like me. HEE HAA!”

  38. Perry/Haley for 2012! Says:

“Turn out the lights, Romney’s chances are over..”

UPDATE: A “source close to” the Romney campaign tells Reuters that Romney’s third quarter figure is likely to be less than $10 million. If Perry raises more than Romney, in half the time, expect Perry to gain a lot of momentum (along with the support of some big money men in the party).

“They say that all good things must end.”

  39. Perry/Haley for 2012! Says:

    Andrew,

C’mon, it’s French. You know, nous remis!

Hey, why do the New French Navy Ships have glass bottoms?

So they can see the Old French Navy :(

What is the first thing the French teach their kids in school?

How to say “We Surrender” in German!

  40. Perry/Haley for 2012! Says:

[SIGH] Romney will have to self finance once again.

  41. Andrew Ryan Says:

    39. When you’re nothing but an apologist and a populist you start to lose all credibility. Nothing you think is substantive, nothing you say will be remembered. You are an empty and shallow echo chamber, repeating the same empty platitudes that some other populist regurgitated on talk radio or some blog.

Original thought pains you, and you have a deficit in insightfulness. You are everything that is wrong with our party. You and your populist ilk gleefully wallow in ignorance all the while cheapening the debate and running the republican party into the ground.

Also France has been one of the most culturally relevant societies since seventeenth century. Spare us the redneck humor.

  42. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Perry’s turning some serious tricks!

  43. Matt "MWS" Says:

But before anyone gets too excited, remember that every dollar Perry raises costs taxpayers $100 in kickbacks to the contributor.

  44. thetruth Says:

Is there an update on the Texas Slush Fund donations. Perry typically give away millions in Texas tax payer money and receives 10-15% (kick) back in the way of donations.

Is that why the Texas Rainy Day Fund is 2 billion less than it was a few months ago????? Just asking.

  45. Jerald Says:

    #16..NEWS FLASH

    MarqueQ is now HOMOSEXUAL!!

MarqueQ recently realized that Mitt Romney has been a straight, happily married (to a woman) man with 5 boys.

In his shock and disgust, MarqueQ has sworn off heteralsexual relationships and is now pouring himself 100% into his new alternative lifestyle.

At first his friends and family were caught by surprise, but then several of them admittted, “It’s consistent with the logic his uses about everything regarding Romney.”

Other noted, “We also expect him soon to change party affiliation to the Democrats and throw his support behind Obama. He’ll do anything he can to counter Romney, to be different than him.”

His poor mother said crying, “I wish he would get some help, but he thinks it’s everyone else who is crazy.”

    ;)

  46. thetruth Says:

    40 Perrywinckle

Dream on, dream on, dream until your dreams implode.

Note: Perry’s 10M only cost the tax payers of Texas 1 Billion, what a financial wizard the Ricky is.

  47. Jerald Says:

#33…CF…You take MarqueQ way too seriously.

He just posts his drivel because he’s either 1. a basket case, or 2. Is trying to stir up baseless trouble for Mitt because he thinks its entertaining and he has nothing better to do with his life…

In view of the above, I wouldn’t invest too much of your time (the stuff life is made of–Ben Franklin) on him…

  48. Jerald Says:

#43…Matt, I think it’s up to you to save the Nation (at least the Race 4 ’12 part of it) by sparing the GOP the embarrassment time bomb that is Rick Perry.

Although you are a RomNot, except as a last resort, you are not a Perry Groupie who checked his brains at the door of Club Mexicali Perry…

  49. MarqueG Says:

Such frustration and dismay, Jerald. Your life will improve substantially under President Perry or President Palin. :-D

  50. hamaca Says:

    45. Jerald–I don’t believe any of it. That comment is about as credible as any of Craig’s comments.

  51. Jerald Says:

    #50 hamaca

It’s more credible, because I admit I made it up!

  52. Jerald Says:

    #49..MarqueQ

If it’s Perry, should I start studying Southern Hick or broken Spanish so that I can undestand what my new president is saying? ;)

  53. Jerald Says:

By the way Craigy, is there any truth that Perry is considering returning the parts of the Unites States we “stole” from Mexico?

I might settle for just giving back California from SF on south. That could really be a boon for the US… ;)

  54. Conservative Gladiator Says:

So I guess Fox News is gonna try and help Perry out by bringing Gary Johnson to the debate…that is too funny. Muddle things up a little bit more…great.

  55. hamaca Says:

Yes, France surrendered to Germany in WWII. Rick Perry, though, is in the process of surrendering Texas to Mexico.

  56. thetruth Says:

    52

Start burying your cash cause big spending Ricky will turn Obama’s recession into Perry’s depression!!

The Texas economy can not be recreated to involve the entire nation. Perry is paying companies to move to Texas (and getting kickbacks from them) I don’t think he will be able to pay Chinese companies to move to the USA and even if he could they wont pay him the standard kickback fees.

  57. Thomas Alan Says:

If Perry raises more than Romney, in half the time, expect Perry to gain a lot of momentum

    A. It wouldn’t be a shock at all if a new candidate stepping in and zooming to first gets a crapload of money.
    B. Unless a candidate has an embarrassing small total and their campaign is falling apart, no one cares about who gets what money.

  58. LV Says:

And exactly why are the big donors gravitating to Rick Perry? Is it his ideas on how to fix the economy, his sinking poll numbers, or his great debating skills…Maybe it’s payback time.

Honestly, since Perry has been in this race, what has he said to make anyone feel comfortable about a Perry nomination?

  59. hamaca Says:

    58. LV,

And exactly why are the big donors gravitating to Rick Perry? Is it his ideas on how to fix the economy, his sinking poll numbers, or his great debating skills…Maybe it’s payback time.

Wait, you’re not suggesting that some of Perry’s fundraising is made up of donors engaging in some sort of pay-to-play? What has Perry ever done that would give you such an idea?

  60. Jerald Says:

    Freudian slip?

Is there something more sinister behind Tricky Ricky Perry’s recent use of poker and ponzi scheme analogies?

Using the impeccable logic of RomNots in Chief, MarqueQ, Craiggy, and casusit/Botan, the never-sleeping sleuths of Race 4 ’12 have found the following opposition research, which is certain to SINK Perry Cottontail’s campaign. He is toast. Doooooooomed.

    WE.TOLD.YOU.HE.HAD.SKELETONS…

    http://news.yahoo.com/u-calls-online-poker-global-ponzi-scheme-185228376.html

  61. Matt "MWS" Says:

    test.

  62. Matt "MWS" Says:

    hamaca,

It’s amazing to me that the Perrywinkles have no answer to the charges of corruption. They might suggest that every politician does it, and it’s really The System’s fault, but none of them bother to make the case that he’s not a crook. It’s almost as if, deep down, they know better.

  63. Jerald Says:

    #62…..Matt

Actually, it’s not much of a mystery.

For whatever reason, they are RomNots…emphasis on the “Nots”.
As long as it’s “not” Romney, they’ll take anybody.

This is what’s so hard for us “Rombots” to understand. For all of the big talk about “core values, spine of steel, principles, etc., etc.” they seem to have none if they think Candidate X can beat Romney.

I, on the other hand, am having a real problem.

What if I have to choose between Obama and Perry?

Should I knowingly vote for a corrupt windbag just because he’s the GOP nominee?

But Obama is a clueless liberal who thinks he’s doing the right thing?

Is not voting for either one really an answer?

I was very happy as long as it was Pawlenty vs. Romney…

  64. Jerald Says:

Matt, the Perrywinkle’s defense of Perry’s corruption remind of one woman I met long ago who was bragging about how great her husband was because he was able to attract and sleep with other people’s wives.

The Perrywinkles (especially Craiggy) almost seem to be saying that Perry gets those kinds of donations and supporters and gives those kinds of kick-backs because he is the Big Man.

Waussy losers like Pawlenty, Romney, Paul, Santorum, etc., etc., don’t have the “mountain oysters” to be able to do that…

  65. Jerald Says:

Matt, come to think of it, maybe those kick-backs are all part of the “having swagger” thing.

Vote for Perry and get the best of both Fred Flintstone and Putin in one body…

  66. Robin from Indiana Says:

    16. You must be very ignorant of what is important in life if you you couldn’t even understand what Mitt was saying in his comment. There are some life experiences that cannot be duplicated. Mitt served the Lord for two years of his life when he was a young man. He did not get paid, he lived a very spartan life, he helped rally the other missionaries after the Mission President’s wife was killed in a car accident in which he was himself gravely injured. He worked hard, he sacrificed, and gave of himself for love of the Lord and his fellow man. I cannot believe you could say that of yourself as a young man of that age, or perhaps even now.

  67. Robin from Indiana Says:

    67. By the way, my young son also served such a mission. How dare you insinuate that anything other than serving the Lord is what these missions are about? You know nothing Marque.

  68. Spenza Says:

Matt, I disagree. Perry SHOULD have bigger numbers coming out the gate since he’s had donors sitting on the sidelines waiting to shell out cash. These aren’t fresh donations or donors. Let’s see what his 4th quarter numbers are after being in a while then we’ll see what reality can offer us in that area.

  69. petunia Says:

So if I donate tomorrow it counts for the third quarter still? This would be a good time for one of those big phone bank donation drives…

I’ll check out Mitt’s website tomorrow, I haven’t been there yet.

  70. ccr Says:

    Petunia, #69……….yes! Go for it!!

Huntsman will NOT back Romney. He turned on him in 2008 and backed McCain. Huntsboy appears to me as immature, petty, jealous and envious. Comparing Huntsboy to Mitt: Mitt went out on his own after TWO excellent advanced degrees while Jr. worked in his dad’s business.

  71. Anthony Frank Says:

    34. MarqueG – “We’ll seek Mitt’s help when the next dark ages befall us.”

You will get Mitt’s help when he is President of the United States. A rising tide lifts all boats.

  72. James Madison Says:

Ron Paul will raise about $9 or $10 million, but with more cash on hand for the primaries.

  73. Michael Lyons Says:

Ssssshhh James, careful, or we might rock the boat :D

Dr. Paul might be close to tieing for 1st in fund-raising. Seriously, watch the news and you’ll probably notice the 3rd quarter results get little to no air time.. HAHAHA Ron Paul’s going to make this antiquated system all KINDS of mad.

Educate yourself, read about the candidates, and make your vote count!
