Well, we’ve had dozens of endorsements since the last endorsement chart update, so it’s high time we deliver the up-to-date version to you.
The endorsement categories are below, and the list of the endorsers are below the fold. Remember, this does not take into account every endorsement a candidate announces – it is simply an attempt to keep track of some of the more important ones. Therefore, it is not the end all, be all of candidate endorsements – but hopefully it is a useful tool.
| Group I | Group II | Group III | Group IV | Group V | |
| Romney | 2 | 16 | 10 | 11 | 8 |
| Perry | 2 | 11 | - | - | 1 |
| Gingrich | 1 | 6 | - | - | - |
| Paul | - | 3 | - | - | - |
| Huntsman | - | - | 1 | 1 | - |
| Santorum | - | - | - | - | 1 |
| Bachmann | - | - | - | - | - |
| Cain | - | - | - | - | - |
| Johnson | - | - | - | - | - |
| McCotter | - | - | - | - | - |
As always, if I missed one let me know in the comments.
An interesting sidenote to this update: the endorsements are trickling in much more slowly than they did in 2008. By this point last cycle Romney already had 68 endorsements as tracked by this chart, McCain had 40, Fred Thompson had 25, and Giuliani had 24. Compare that to 41 for Romney so far and 14 for Perry.
UPDATE: Updated with the Maine endorsements, listed above, that were released this afternoon.

I know its not statewide, so not a bellweather of same, but 33 of 36 republicans currently serving in MA endorsed Romney:

en masse in Mass.

Nothing for Bachmann!

Romney needs some more southern love outside of Florida. Otherwise, getting support across the US.

“Nothing for Bachmann!”
Her entire resume consists of four and a half years in Congress and five years as an IRS attorney.
Perry’s resume is nothing but a bunch of political positions.
Romney has the experience and know-how to turn this country around, which is why in every head-to-head matchup against Obama, Romney does better than Perry.

For sure.
Put another way:
Perry’s Texas Endorsements: 6 of 14
Romney’s MA endorsements: 2 of 42
This indicates Romney’s broader appeal with the away crowds (you have to play on the road to win this one).
But as the second link I provided shows, he’s got plenty of homecoming support as well:
http://hcam.tv/news/mass-republicans-endorse-mitt-romney
As for the south: remember, Romney won’t lose any states that Perry would win against Obama in the general election, but Romney will win some blue/purple states that Perry will never bring into play (Michigan, New Hampshire, and increasingly Florida).

Where are Romney’s endorsements from Jimmy Carter and Al Gore?
September 20th, 2011 at 11:32 am
Always fun to not get into the sqwuabbling, but enjoy the vain attempts by the dwindling Romnots.
Instead of ignoring good news for Romney they feel compelled to “gumby” stretch some lame attack.
September 20th, 2011 at 12:22 pm
This is so pathetic – - and typical of Romney. 90% of his endorsements came BEFORE Perry got in and when Romney thought himself to be “the annointed one”.

In post 11, Franklin asks, “Where are Romney’s endorsements from Jimmy Carter and Al Gore?”
Carter and Gore endorsed Romney only because they want Republicans to reject him. If Romney is the nominee, he will easily defeat Obama, which means the leftist policies that Carter and Gore endorse will quickly evaporate. Carter and Gore are playing the same game that the liberal media plays.
When Romney was the front-runner, the liberal pundits harped on Massachusetts healthcare and alluded to the Republicans being stupid if they chose Romney for the nominee.
And when Bachmann began to surge, the liberal pundits put forth that they were actually impressed with her. They were playing her up like she was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they never brought up that her entire resume consists of serving four and a half years in Congress and being an IRS attorney for five years.
Ever since Perry got into the race, the same liberal pundits cannot stop talking about him, and they constantly harp on the prospect that he will be the nominee. Liberal pundits make it clear that they believe Obama supporters have something to worry about if Perry is the nominee.
You may ask: Why is the liberal media doing this?
In every head to head match up against Obama, Romney does better than Perry. The left wants anyone but Romney to be the candidate because they know he is really a conservative who comes across as a moderate. The left knows that Romney has the best pro-business track record and wants smaller government.
So look for the left to keep playing up Perry. The nation may not reject Perry in the same way that the nation rejected Goldwater in 1964, when Goldwater won only 5 states (Southern states) in addition to his home state of Arizona, but the left definitely views Perry as a candidate Obama can defeat. The left knows that if Romney is the nominee, Obama is toast.

Did you count my endorsement? Tier 1B.

Carter and Gore endorsed Romney only because they want Republicans to reject him.

Or maybe they realize that he is a political weather vane that has no firm beliefs other than what benefits him politically. He may be the one Republican that if one is elected, may be the one they can work with.

“He may be the one Republican that if one is elected, may be the one they can work with.”
If Carter and Gore actually wanted Romney to be the GOP nominee and likely President, they would have endorsed Perry. Carter and Gore are leftists and they know that their endorsement of any Republican candidate will raise doubts about the candidate.
If you think Carter and Gore endorsed Romney with the intention of helping him secure the Republican nomination, then you have absolutely no understanding of politics.
September 20th, 2011 at 3:32 pm
Matt C, it seems like you should have a Group 1A/game changer category for endorsements from people like Palin, Jeb and Huck.

By that rationale, we should have gone with Ford in 1980 instead of Reagan because he beat Carter by 10 in March. However by November, a solid debate performance gave Reagan a 10 point win. Anyone who gets the nomination could win if things continue to go poorly
