KISS Bassist Endorses Perry?

Laura Donovan over at The Daily Caller reports that KISS bassist, Gene Simmons, seems to have picked a horse for 2012:

Two weeks after predicting that Texas Gov. Rick Perry will oust President Barack Obama from the White House in 2012, KISS bassist Gene Simmons suggested that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would make a fine running mate.

In a series of tweets Friday, Simmons waded back into political waters by suggesting the Perry–Rice presidential ticket.

“Wanna play a Political Game? Here’s a hard ticket to beat – Gov Perry and Condoleezza Rice,” the musician tweeted.

Simmons went on to explain why he views Condi favorably.

“Met her in Stockholm & she struck me as politically savvy as anyone I’ve met in gov’mt,” Simmons wrote in another tweet. “She won’t run for VP, but this ticket is a winner.”

Earlier this month, Simmons expressed confidence that Perry would be the next president, citing his own voting history as evidence: “I voted for Pres Bush. I voted for Pres Clinton. I voted for Pres Obama. The next president will be Gov Rick Perry…Gov Perry worked for Al Gore and then switched to Republican. He will be our next President. I’ve never been wrong.” (MORE: Gene Simmons declares Rick Perry the next president)

While Simmons has faith that the Perry–Rice ticket is a winner, the rock star clarified via Twitter that he hasn’t yet announced who he’ll vote for in a year’s time.

Interesting article from Frum Forum on how Rick Perry got rich as a public servant. Apparently, he would buy real estate that would mysteriously triple in value in two years and he would turn a large profit.

This is something that can’t be glossed over and will hurt his general election chances. This needs to be answered now.

  2. Matt "MWS" Says:

So in terms of electoral impact, how does this endorsement compare to, say, the Crist endorsement of ’08?

  3. Thomas Alan Says:

Kavon, I hope you just posted this endorsement out of sheer amusement. Because the front page is gonna be awfully full of endorsements no one gives a rip about if we keep this up.

Anyway, I wouldn’t say “worked for Al Gore” makes for the most ringing endorsement.

  4. Mark in PA Says:

I like how he says he voted for Clinton, and then for Obama… and he’s never been wrong. So, did he vote for W, or just not vote in those two elections??

    lol @ 3

  5. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    2

It’s vastly more influential. Crist in 2008 was pretty new to the political scene. This guy is smarter than Perry and more well-versed on political issues.

  6. Matt "MWS" Says:

    SteveT,

That’s how they do it in Chicago. Tons of aldermen, and politically connected cronies were buying up real estate in anticipation of the 2016 Olympics. The city would then buy the properties from them, paying far more than market value, of course.

Unfornately for them, Barry O didn’t come through, and a lot of the corrupt bastards got burned. :-)

But using real estate to launder money to politicians and cronies is a time honored tradition up here.

  7. Matt "MWS" Says:

    MassCon,

    LOL!

  8. Matt "MWS" Says:

Perry does very much remind me of a Southern Fried, Texified Chicago politician. I have little doubt that if he cut his teeth in Chicago, instead of Austin, he would be worth more than a couple million today, and would quite possibly be running the whole racket up there.

  9. SteveT Says:

    # 7, I get what you are saying with Illinois politics. I live in Wisconsin and work in Illinois frequently (I catch some Chicago political talk on the radio when I am in town).

I was hoping we would not have a nominee that is like that.

It must be said that your guy Huntsman is looking better and better compared to some of those receiving the hype.

  10. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    8

Yep. He’s the kind of guy who always had potential to be a good boy and make it, but decided he liked the “game.” He LOVES campaigning, saying a bunch of crap, and watching all the subjects swoon over him. He loves being the boss. And he loves that he stepped over so many people to make it to the top.

  11. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

Never liked Huntsman, but he’s MILES ahead of everyone in the race (except Romney).

  12. Dave Says:

If you add up Rick’s Pay to Play with his real estate deals and lack of debating skills, his campaign could implode faster than I would like it to.

Simmons’ endorsement might just be the KISS of death.

  13. Thunder (Any body but Perry) Says:

I find it very funny how people are jumping on the Rick Perry Band Wagon without even hearing him in a national debate. I got a feeling a lot of these guys are going to wishing they hadn’t jumped too soon.

  14. asparagus Says:

2 Are you talking about Peter Crist? Where does he stand?

  15. welby Says:

    Dave Says:

If you add up Rick’s Pay to Play with his real estate deals and lack of debating skills,

Do we know for sure that he has a lack of debating skills? I haven’t seen him in a debate setting. He must have some skills to have never lost an election.

  16. asparagus Says:

Geez Kristol is at it again, this time pimping Susan Martinez for VP. Has there ever been a worse affirmative action cheerleader in the conservative media? Anybody that Kristol thinks is brilliant, immediately run the other way.

  17. asparagus Says:

15 He’s never had a serious challenger in a primary and he’s never faced a tough opponent in a gubernatorial election. This is Texas we are talking about. The politics are controlled by business interests. Its bought and paid for. By the time the people get to vote, the choice is between the status quo and a comedian or a 9-11 truther. We choose the status quo every time. George W. Bush was elected twice here. That should tell you everything you need to know.

  18. Thunder (Any body but Perry) Says:

    welby Says:

Do we know for sure that he has a lack of debating skills? I haven’t seen him in a debate setting. He must have some skills to have never lost an election.
    ======================================================================================
He really hasn’t faced any real competition in his elections. He became Governor when Bush became president. After that, the Republicans in Texas really hasn’t pushed for another candidate. No Democrat is going to beat a Republican in Texas.

But the National Stage is a whole lot different than running against weak competition in Texas.

  19. Dave Says:

    welby,

Full disclosure: I’ve never seen Rick in a debate setting, so I’m guessing. The hunch is based on seeing him tongue-tied from time to time…..even in friendly interviews. But add to that:

There will be people on the stage who will be highly motivated to bring Rick down, and Rick doesn’t have the easiest record among announced candidates to defend.

As I wrote in another post, everything people like about Perry, they already know. The debates will bring up a lot of unpleasantries that they’re not aware of.

  20. teledude Says:

Gene Simmons endorsed Clinton and Perry.

    That is perfectly consistent.

    Perry loves him some HillaryCare

    http://i55.tinypic.com/105bb5g.jpg

  21. Thomas Alan Says:

    15:

Who knows his debating skills really. I was amused a few days ago when Craig declared him a better debater than Romney. Not sure what he was basing it on.

It’s all a part of why we should take his winning record and being a great campaigner with a grain of salt though. Only two of those campaigns were all that competitive, 13 and 21 years ago.

  22. teledude Says:

Question, would Perry supporters prefer to be called Perrywinkles or Perry-Krishnas?

  23. asparagus Says:

I think they are called Rickrollers.

  24. Shane Says:

Gene Simmons is probably having fond memories of the times KISS would tour with Journey and he had the opportunity to travel the country with Perry. Oh, wait…the lead singer for Journey was Steve Perry, not Rick Perry. Someone better get Simmons on the phone and let him know!

  25. Riccardo Says:

    How about “Lick Ricks”?

  26. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

Perry’s debating/communication skills are in Huck’s league as opposed to Romney’s stuttering, rambling, and way too fast manner of speech.

    No contest.

    =======================================================================
    Are you crazy?????????????????????????????????

As much as I hate to complement Huck, Perry can not hold a candle to Huck. Perry isn’t that smart. Like calling the head of the Federal Reserve a traitor, poking his fingers at a questioner, have you seen in an interview. Horrible….

  28. SteveT Says:

For a primer on how Rick Perry will do in a debate see here:

    Link: http://www.rightspeak.net/2011/08/rick-perry-is-not-quick-on-his-feet.html

Trust me Huck does not have any interviews that look like this out there!

  29. SteveT Says:

Spend 1 hour and a half watching Rick Perry videos of interviews and speeches and there will be no way you would compare him to Huck.

That is the reason Perry is not doing many interviews now or the reason that he did not debate his general election opponent in 2010.

It will be interesting to see if his debate performances turn out better than Fred Thompson’s did 4 years ago. We shall see…

  30. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

I guess Simmons recognizes talented communicators — kinda what he does for a living.

But his Hollywood friends are going to hate him for going with the conservative over the liberal Obama. Gene may have to hide out in his mansion till 2013 or so — then come out just in time for Perry’s inaugural parties and perform!!

  31. casuist Says:

Perry’s debating/communication skills are in Huck’s league as opposed to Romney’s stuttering, rambling, and way too fast manner of speech.

Yeah, OK., granted, but you have to love the comedy gold of the ideological cross-dresser, Willard Romney, when allows himself to say what he wants to say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhx8e9j7r0w

  32. casuist Says:

Geez Kristol is at it again, this time pimping Susan Martinez for VP. Has there ever been a worse affirmative action cheerleader in the conservative media? Anybody that Kristol thinks is brilliant, immediately run the other way.

Yes, and Kristol is correct when he assumes that the VP is Perry’s to choose.

  33. ogrepete Says:

    Ugh…

This could be Huck’s 2008 Chuck Norris ads redux. :(

Very fun ads, but for the wrong guy, IMHO.

  34. Thomas Alan Says:

    26:

Rambling? Stuttering? Do you watch the debates?

Last I checked both Mitt supporters and detractors agree that he’s a human PowerPoint presentation during the debates. Nobody comes close to his ability to think on his feet and clearly articulate his position. That includes Huckabee, who has an advantage in generating one-liners, but not in making coherent points.

  35. casuist Says:

Last I checked both Mitt supporters and detractors agree that he’s a human PowerPoint presentation during the debates.

Yes, and that is not a good thing, as Willard strikes his audiences not so much human as humanoid, as not so much poised as posed, as not so much committed as like to be committed, sort of like an angry android only without the passion or precision, to the degree that the other candidates took great delight in ganging up on him.

  36. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

Another indication of stuttering Mitt’s fear of Perry is his skipping of DeMint’s September debate forum in SC next month where answers can be in depth instead of 30 second memorized Mitt-lines.

Romney definitely does not want that type of debating forum at all — i.e. an extended answers format, so he avoids it like a plague. (LOL!) That should go over well with the other candidates — not really, they’re going to pummel Romney for not showing up!

You think Romney’s numbers are BAD now, just wait….. ;)

  37. Thomas Alan Says:

    35:

That’s your opinion. I rather like that my candidate can articulate positions I agree with in a succinct manner time after time after time and at the drop of a hat.

  38. Thomas Alan Says:

You think Romney’s numbers are BAD now, just wait…..

For the forum that won’t be televised and no one will ever see?

  39. casuist Says:

Another indication of stuttering Mitt’s fear of Perry is his skipping of DeMint’s September debate forum in SC next month where answers can be in depth instead of 30 second memorized Mitt-lines.

Yes, but Willard was right to flee this event. The south has an oratorical and debate tradition that Romney’s unstructured bullet-point mind–the unstructured bullet-point is the single analytical gesture of the powerpoint slide–completely flummoxed.

    Powerpoint makes us stupid: http://blogs.computerworld.com/16006/powerpoint_makes_you_stupid

    Death by powerpoint: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_by_PowerPoint

Every criticism of powerpoint you can pin on Romney. as Thomas Alan says, the man is a walking powerpoint presentation only without the soul or wit.

  40. casuist Says:

For the forum that won’t be televised and no one will ever see?

These early networking events are critical. Romney’s absence marks him as “not one of us, and I never even want to try to identify with you rubes” among southern conservatives, which is true, of course, but a better man, and a more effective candidate, would have made the effort.

  41. casuist Says:

edited version: Yes, and that is not a good thing, as Willard strikes his audiences as not so much human as humanoid, as not so much poised as posed, as not so much committed as likely to be committed, sort of like an angry android only without the passion or precision, to the degree that the other candidates took great delight in ganging up on him.

  42. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

    38.

The parts that matter (likely all of it) will be shown and reported over and over in all the media and ESPECIALLY the Romney jokes and roasts for NOT showing his face :)

Look, after Perry gets done rock and rolling in September, we can all add at least five points to the 10 1/2 year “half the jobs created in America” Texas governor’s current lead.

    C N N 8/24 – 8/25 Perry +13
    Gallup 8/17 – 8/21 Perry +11
    PPPoll 8/18 – 8/21 Perry +10
    Rasmus 8/15 – 8/15 Perry +11

Yep, that’s the numbers now — but wait till after the month of Ricktember when MIA Mitt drops back further and further and further, AND FURTHER.

  43. Thomas Alan Says:

    39:

Yeah, anyone who sets up any of these things says the same thing. A few candidates, usually the lower ranked ones, show up. Then the host talks about how much it was a missed opportunity for ______ and ______ not to be there. Then the election actually starts and who cares?

There are tons of these events that happen. The only one I ever saw that had merit was Rick Warren’s excellent sit-downs with McCain and Obama.

  44. thetruth Says:

casuist – you keep rambling on with your idiotic posts and we will see in the end who gets the nomination. All your blah blah blah is getting pathetic.

  45. casuist Says:

Yep, that’s the numbers now — but wait till after the month of Ricktember when MIA Mitt drops back further and further and further, AND FURTHER.

Liar. Just wait until people examine Perry’s record blah blah blah. Perry supported Gore blah blah blah. Perry supported HillaryCare or something blah blah blah. Perry capers naked with demons on the witch’s Sabbat and he likes it blah blah blah. People will flock to Romney as he is the only candidate who can blah blah blah. Perry can’t debate blah blah he’s dumb blah blah he’s from Texas blah blah Romney is a conservative-centrist-progressive all things to all people and that’s what we need right now a national healer shape-shifter puppet-man ideological cross-dressing powerpoint slide reading humanoid blah blah blah.

  46. Thomas Alan Says:

    44:

Y’know, pretty much everything you said about Perry is…a fact.

  47. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

    Yeah,

Romney dissing DeMint’s debate forum AND the Florida (Ames-like event) straw poll BOTH in September is a very, very, very wise move.

    NOT!

Perry will be at both events, and again pummel Romney for chickening out.

Who is advising Willard? The dudes from ’08?

  48. casuist Says:

casuist – you keep rambling on with your idiotic posts and we will see in the end who gets the nomination.

Well, precisely. We shall see. Here’s a clue for you: It. Won’t. Be. Willard. This would be the case even if Wee Willie Willard didn’t face a sitting governor from a state continuous with the GOP regional base, and with a solid record of pro-growth job-creating policies.

Haters gonna’ hate. Rombats gonna’ prance about. That sort of thing.

  49. casuist Says:

Romney dissing DeMint’s debate forum AND the Florida (Ames-like event) straw poll BOTH in September is a very, very, very wise move.

Did you know that Romney pays consultants for brilliant advice like this? It’s a fact. A very sad fact.

  50. Thomas Alan Says:

  51. casuist Says:

Y’know, pretty much everything you said about Perry is…a fact.

And yet Perry continues to surge in the polls. I can only imagine the cognitive dissonance you are experiencing right now as your abiding love for the hem of Romney’s garment contradicts the brute fact of Romney’s precipitous fall from grace with the voters as registered in poll after poll.

That’s actually a great idea, Pete. Perry could capture the 30 something goin’ on 17 vote since Kiss still to this day sells out stadiums and arenas across the heartland of America.

    Rock on!

  55. Thomas Alan Says:

    51:

I don’t see how that makes me wrong. And I know you’re happy that you have a cohort now in casuist, but that doesn’t mean you get to be overthetop too and start calling candidates names.

  56. teledude Says:

I think Romney has a perfect comeback if Tricky Ricky mentions Romneycare…

HillaryCare was far worse, and Tricky Ricky loves him some HillaryCare.

What we have here are two fatally flawed candidates.

By comparison, this is going to be very appealing:

“Palin’s commitment to free-market competition and transparency is well-evidenced by her establishment of the Alaska Health Care Strategies Planning Council (HCSPC) and her introduction of the Alaska Health Care Transparency Act.

The American Spectator points out that although it didn’t make it through the legislature, “The Alaska Health Care Transparency Act confirmed that Sarah Palin means it when she says she’s in politics to ‘challenge the status quo and to serve the common good.’

Moreover, her push for greater competition also demonstrates that she understands the potential of the free market to cure much of what ails American health care.”

  57. casuist Says:

I’m not surprised at all at how Perry’s doing in the polls. I was expecting it. Doesn’t mean he going to win.

Yes, of course, because it was Willard’s secret plan all along to get pummelled in poll after poll after spending months developing the illusion of an inevitable lead. And when Perry becomes the GOP nominee, why, Willard planned that too, as he is too excellent to ever fail to win the hearts and minds of those unworthy rube-republicans with the overpowering power of his powerful powerpoint hypnotic monochrome drone of whatever it is that Willard thinks you want to hear.

  58. casuist Says:

The American Spectator points out that although it didn’t make it through the legislature, “The Alaska Health Care Transparency Act confirmed that Sarah Palin means it when she says she’s in politics to ‘challenge the status quo and to serve the common good.’

Cool. I like Palin a lot. Had she not resigned her governorship–if she were a sitting governor–I think she would be the frontrunner, and Perry would probably never have entered the race. But here we are, you and I, stuck with the grim reality of some guy named Willard who wants to call his only real accomplishment, a massive entitlements scam called RomneyCare, a “conservative” accomplishment, as if up were down, as if dark were light, as if inside were outside, as if pig-ignorance were strength, as if war were peace. It’s weird, don’t you think?

  59. asparagus Says:

Can you do us all a favor and stop calling the man “Willard”. It is disrespectful. When you use “Willard”, its a clue to stop caring what you write. You are obviously a troll.

  60. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

Rombots have been in meltdown mode since Perry first entered the race and picked up 700 (write-in!!!) votes at Ames topping Romney who was ON THE BALLOT — and then subsequently EACH scientific poll after that has been scoffed at and ridiculed by the bots — who are all starting to sound a lot like TEX and the Palindrones here and at C4P.

And that is called denial in lieu of the overwhelming facts at hand. Sorry for the tough love.

  61. casuist Says:

    It is disrespectful.

    Willard. is. the. man’s. name.

    It. is. his. first. name.

You have my permission to call Perry “Rick”, or Richard, or even the diminutive Rickie, or whatever. Why? Because. it. is. his. name.

Dude. Let me get this straight. Perry picked up 700 write-ins to beat Willard, er, I mean, Romney–hey, I’m not troll!–whose name was on the ballot!?

    Yikes.

  64. Perry/Bachmann for 2012 Says:

Rumor has it that the two 10 1/2 year so-con populist governors will soon rendezvous on Huckabee’s show at Fox News. Management there is cleverly putting it all together as we speak. Stay tuned, folks.

  65. asparagus Says:

He doesn’t go by Willard. He goes by Mitt, his middle name. Why would I want to call Rick Perry “Richard”? He doesn’t go by the name Richard. I am going to ask one more time. Would you please refer to Mitt Romney as either Mitt or Romney? Otherwise, you are just trying to ridicule the man and I have no further use for you. On this site, people generally are respectful of each other.

  66. asparagus Says:

62 In the Texas ballot, the name is spelled Mitt Romney. The name Willard does not appear. Let’s not act all innocent. You are using the Obama strategy to make Romney look “weird”. I don’t know where the hate comes from, but its disgusting.

I am going to ask one more time. Would you please refer to Mitt Romney as either Mitt or Romney? Otherwise, you are just trying to ridicule the man …

Yes, and we’re just going to have to disagree on that, because in any land but Romneyland to call a person by his or her name is itself a show of deep respect not just for our common humanness, but for that which makes us each unique and worthy of the simple decencies of our shared existences in this world. So I will continue to refer to Willard as Willard, as this is my salute to the man and his mission, as this is my gesture of recognition for his contribution to our public life, as this is only what is expected of all peoples of good will, everywhere.

Let me put it this way. It is not just the name but also the person who uses it. If you used James Perry, then it might not be taken as disrespectful but if a rombot used James instead of Rick, it would be considered disrespectful. The same applies to you using Willard for Mitt.
