Romney Announces Vin Weber as Special Adviser on Policy

Huge “get” for Team Romney. Is Weber “President Romney’s” future Chief-of-Staff?

Mitt Romney today announced that former Minnesota Congressman Vin Weber will serve as Special Adviser on Policy. In that capacity, he will be a senior member of Governor Romney’s policy team and will provide advice on foreign and economic policy.

“I am proud to have Vin’s support,” said Mitt Romney. “Vin will be a trusted adviser and I look forward to working with him to help get our country moving in the right direction again.”

Announcing his support, Vin Weber said, “It is an honor to again work with Mitt Romney. At such a critical time in our nation’s history, it is important that we have someone with his background to lead the country. After three years of failed policies, Mitt Romney’s record of leadership is what we need to strengthen the country both at home and abroad.”

Vin Weber Was A Member Of The U.S. House Of Representatives From 1981 To 1993. Weber most recently served as a Co-Chairman of Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s presidential campaign. In 2004, Weber served as Plains States Regional Chairman for George Bush’s campaign and in 2008 was a Policy Chairman for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. Currently, Weber is a Managing Partner of Clark & Weinstock.

I hope he enjoys as much success in the Romney campaign as he did in his last gig.

  2. Rob Says:

Matt, haha, I bet you do. I think that Vin’s last campaign job didn’t work out so well because of the candidate as opposed to his advise. It’s a shame because I really liked Tim.

  3. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Rob,

Tim no doubt played a large role in his own demise, and the buck always stops with the candidate. But I do suspect he was getting a lot of bad advice. The campaign kept trying on new identities and strategies, and never settled on one. Of course the most damning occurance of this shizo mentality was ObamneyGate. But that was merely the most public sympton of the problem, and ended up making TPaw look like a wimp, which he isn’t.

Whoa…that’s really thinking ‘outside the box!’

    Vin Weber?

    game changer!

  5. Rob Says:

Matt, I totally agree. If he would have simply been himself he probably would have done a lot better.

  6. Watchinitall Says:

what do you call a blog that ruminates over the failed campaign of Pawlenty?

    Post morTim.

  7. CF Says:

It seems like every day Romney is picking up more and more endorsements as well as more and more donors.

Romney also has two town halls today:

  8. Craig for Michele/Perry '12 Says:

T-Paw’s minions are naturally going to be swayed by Romney since they’re pretty much alike as quite similar moderate leaning govs from very blue northern area states. (Btw, I think Michele and T-Paw have been knocking heads for a decade due to the fact she’s so much more conservative than him.)

And then you have the traditional red state conservatives like the ones down in Texas..where Michele should probably move someday since they are waaaaay more in line with her views compared to Minnesota. That is, if she wants to be a U.S. senator or governor. Or she could try Iowa if this president run doesn’t work out.

And a big THANK YOU to Governor Rick “Jobs” Perry:

Rick Perry signs Susan B. Anthony List pledge

    8/24/11 10:39 AM EDT

The Texas governor has added his name to the list of candidates signing the Susan B. Anthony List’s strict anti-abortion pledge, checking a box with social conservatives that distinguishes him from top rival Mitt Romney.

The SBA List pledge includes four points: a vow to only nominate strict constructionist judges, to “select only pro-life appointees for relevant Cabinet and Executive Branch positions,” to push for defunding Planned Parenthood and other taxpayer-supported abortion providers and to sign a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

In a statement release by the SBA List, Perry said he not only pledges “to protect unborn life, but have a record of doing so … I have signed legislation requiring parental consent for a minor to obtain an abortion, and have long advocated adoption as an alternative to abortion in order to protect unborn children.”

All the major Republican presidential candidates oppose abortion, but Perry’s willingness to sign the SBA List pledge distinguishes him from Romney (as well as Jon Huntsman) who has declined to do so. That could help Perry shore up support among social conservatives already wary of Romney.

The flip side is that some provisions of the SBA List pledge — putting an abortion-related litmus test on Cabinet appointments, for example — may be less sympathetic to important general-election voters such as suburban women.

    Rick Perry = Rod Blagojevich

Rick Perry makes Rod Blagojevich look like an amateur. Perry has perfected the art of raising campaign money from companies that receive state money to enhance their profits, and from individuals he appoints to state positions. Regarding pay-for-play schemes, Rod Blagojevich was Clark Kent and Rick Perry is Superman.

Required reading: the New York Times story of Aug. 21 about this subject, and the work of the Texans for Public Justice, quoted in the Times story, suggesting Perry has raised at least $17 million from people he has appointed, or their spouses.

The Perry-Blagojevich pay-for-play politics style is one of the things most voters despise about government today. Want to get a grant of taxpayer money? Make a donation to the Rick Perry campaign. Want to be named to an oversight board? Write a check to Rick. Oil? Education? Even parks and wildlife! Democratic donor? Republican donor? Write a check to Rick. He does nonpartisan pay-for-play!

Rick Perry’s pay-for-play color is not red or blue. It is green. Perry is the equal-opportunity pay-for-play money man. You pay, he plays.

Rick Perry is a career politician, corrupt to the core. Do we really need another nominee like that?

  10. Greg Says:

Well, that means Giuliani can’t be Perry’s VP, or anything else. Interesting

  11. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Watch,

    #6

I think you owe everyone who read that an apology………

  12. Matt "MWS" Says:

    ….but I’ve got to admit, I smiled as I rolled my eyes…..

  13. CF Says:

    10

Yes he can! Rick Perry is perfectly okay with baby killing in New York.

  14. PabloZed Says:

#8 – Wow, that pledge goes way to far. So basically, Perry has pledged to only appoint pro-life Secretaries of State and Defense and a pro-life Directors of National Security and CIA. That strikes me as dangerous to national security.

  15. Greg Says:

Honestly, Giuliani cannot be in Perry’s administration.

  16. asparagus Says:

What Romney’s campaign REALLY needs right now is Vin Diesel. Huck had Chuck Norris. Just sayin’.

  17. CF Says:

    14

It’s like I said yesterday on here. For all the talk that Perry would bridge the Tea Party with the establishment Republican, he’s doing a terrible job of it. He’s going down the same road as Bachmann, and will gain the support of the exact same type of supporter. This will help him win Iowa, but won’t help him elsewhere.

The dirty little secret though, is that Perry is nothing like Bachmann under the surface. He’s a career politician, corrupt in that he sells legislation to the highest bidder, and loves the status quoue. He is exactly the opposite of what the Tea Party stands for (Fiscal Responsibilty).

  18. Greg Says:

Perry’s pay-for-play schemes are really getting disgusting

  19. Liz Says:

Why don’t you post Romney’s new “Unions are thugs” clip? I think it’s well done.

  20. LV Says:

CF..#9….When is Perry gonna get on the interview circuit? He’s got a lot of explainin’ to do…He can’t hide behind the skirts at FOX forever!

  21. Ben (One of those MittWitts) Says:

What are you going to to Pablo – you seem to be getting leery of Perry and Bachmann – are you jumping on the last non-Romney train w/ Huntsman? or are you starting to warm a bit more to Romney? Heaven forbid. ;)

  22. Greg Says:

Perry just just threw rudy under the bus

  23. Matt Y. Says:

    #14:

#8 – Wow, that pledge goes way to far. So basically, Perry has pledged to only appoint pro-life Secretaries of State and Defense and a pro-life Directors of National Security and CIA. That strikes me as dangerous to national security.

Actually, no. It says “relevant” Cabinet positions, like I believe HHS and maybe Attorney General, for example. Sec’ys of State and Defense aren’t relevant; neither is the DNI or CIA; they deal with foreign policy, defense, and security.

  24. Watchinitall Says:

    MWS

    12. My kids call this “Dad humor”. Successful dad humor always involves eye-rolling, and sometimes a smile.

I figured you’re a sucker for Latin, regardless.

  25. Rightgal. Says:

And, in further news, Romney also picks up some of Pawlenty’s former endorsement/supporters.
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/romney-picks-up-endorsements-from-key-pawlenty-supporters/2011/08/24/gIQALDC8aJ_story.html

  26. PabloZed Says:

#21 – I have always been a fan of Huntsman. Romney not so much. I could never get on that train because I could never be sure what direction it will take.

#23 – Actually, State and Defense would be “relevant” even as you would define it because both positions have influence over programs such as family planning overseas and medical services provided to the enlisted.

  27. Dave Says:

The major significance of the Vin Weber get is in Minnesota, where he has power and influence. Mitt carried Minnesota last time by something like a 2 to 1 margin, and Weber was a big part of that.

Now, Vin and Mitt are teaming up to do it again.

  28. Dave Says:

BTW, The Eaton get in New Hampshire helps lock down the state for Mitt. The former head of the State Senate there will make it more difficult for anyone else to emerge as a threat.

Don’t know anything about the 2 new endorsements in Iowa.

  29. Bachmann/Perry ’12 (Or reverse it!) Says:

    Paul,

The key word is “relevant” I believe..

  30. Bachmann/Perry ’12 (Or reverse it!) Says:

Matt beat me to it in #23 :)

  31. ogrepete Says:

If Kavon calls this “huge”, than it makes me happy. On the other hand, Mr. Weber is a lobbyist; I thought lobbyists were to be held at least four arms’ length away. ;)

  32. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Watch,

I make my kids’ eyes roll a lot too.
