Pawlenty Money Situation Better Than Expected; Bachmann Fails to Impress

News on the fundraising front as the FEC deadline comes today:

First, Pawlenty’s campaign released more detailed numbers ahead of the FEC release and things actually look remarkably better for them than originally assumed. Pawlenty raised $4.45 million last quarter, of which just $600,000 was for the general election. They spent about $2.45 million, leaving them with $1.4 million cash on hand as of June 30.

This isn’t great news compared to competitors in 2007, but compared to other candidates in the field this campaign Pawlenty is not nearly as bad off as folks had thought. $1.4 million cash on hand is more than enough to make a strong push at Ames.

Meanwhile, Bachmann was expected to come in second in the money race, but sources are reporting there may be a reason she never released her numbers until she had to. According to someone close to the campaign, Bachmann will report $4 million for the second quarter — $2 million of which was a transfer from her House campaign. This means Michelle raised just $2 million, putting her at the bottom of the fundraising list and well behind Pawlenty’s $3.85 million.

The silver lining for the Bachmann campaign, and what they will likely focus on: she had just a couple weeks in June when she was actually running to raise the money.

As the official FEC numbers are released, I will post an official second quarter fundraising leaderboard, complete with cash on hand numbers as well.

UPDATE: Rick Santorum reports raising $582,000. He has $229,000 cash on hand.

  1. Smack1968 Says:

    Matt C,

Smackdaddy’s $200.00 has made all the difference in the world. I would have given another $100.00 but I couldn’t part with my beer money.

    I’m loyal……but to a point.

  2. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

    Lol Smack

  3. Rightgal Says:

Glad to see Pawlenty is still in the game.

  4. PabloZed Says:

Money is important, but message is key. I am interested to see the ad(s) that will be run.

  5. Mark in PA Says:

TPAW is going to need every penny for Ames. He needs to go for broke. If he places 3rd or lower at Ames, I think he’s done. He may struggle on, but I worry that it would be futile.

These numbers have to encourage him, though, since Bachmann isn’t as strong as it was thought. We’ll see.

    Good job, Smack.
My money is going to Mitt, but if he implodes for some reason, I’ll jump hard on the TPAW wagon.

  6. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

I’m not so sure TPaw remains viable even if he comes in 2nd.

The only way he survives by coming in 2nd is if the media spins it as an underdog story, a comeback from the Obamneycare debacle.

I think he is just as likely to win as Bachmann is, but we’ll see.

  7. Right Wingnut Says:

Bachmann formed an exploratory committee in March. I assume the $2 Million includes funds raised from that point, not just the money raised over the past two weeks.

  8. TarheelRepublican Says:

Bachmann doesn’t need money to win Iowa…unless Perry jumps in.

  9. Max Twain Says:

Pawlenty needs to win at Ames to stave off further erosion in his support when Perry/Palin (likely Perry) enters the race. If he doesn’t, then the man who spent the most time and money in Iowa would’ve not only lost to Bachmann, but be overshadowed by Perry, leaving him dead in the water.

  10. Chris L. Says:

Matt, re T-Paw, have you seen anything that would indicate the flavor of his contributions? That is, how many $1,000+ contributors vs say under $500.

One other thing to look for is the burn rate of these various candidates as that is going to say something about their organization and their real strategy perhaps.

  11. John Galt Says:

” things actually look remarkably better for them than originally assumed…..They spent about $2.45 million, leaving them with $1.4 million cash on hand as of June 30.” LOL

If this is remarkably better than assumed, that is sad.

  12. John Galt Says:

Honestly if tpaw doesn’t win ames he might be done.

  13. Smack1968 Says:

TPAW mailer going out this week.

Another “Pawlenty Won” type of messaging in this mailer….Smackdaddy gave you all the inside sccop weeks ago on “Pawlenty Won” being used more and more often in Pawlenty’s ADs and materails.

Pawlenty has won many fights with Liberals…Bachmann has…well…..never mind.

  14. Wild Onion Says:

Bottom line, Pawlenty needs to beat Bachmann at Ames. That probably means that he needs to finish first, unless Ron Paul pulls off a win (which I think is very likely).

  15. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Good to hear.

  16. Smack1968 Says:

The Woman’s Right to Know Act..was signed into law by Governor Pawlenty in his first term in office.

Requires informed consent and a 24 hour waiting period before an abortion.

The law was the strongest informed consent law in the country at the time.

Appointed a Pro-Life advocate to be Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Turned a Liberal Minnesota Supreme Court into a conservative one and is committed to appointing only strict constuctionalist judges who will abide by the Constitution.

Signed the Positive Alternatives to Abortion Act.

Co-authored the Defense of Marriage Act.

I could raise more money than Santorum. What is that guy doing? Hey Santorum….you are the brownback of 2012 sir. Get out of the way. :) I kid, i kid.

  19. Matthew E. Miller Says:

Santorum boggles my mind. Granted, he’s not doing too much worse than Pawlenty and Huntsman in the polls but he has absolutely no establishment or grassroots support. I can’t envision a scenario where he places better than 5th at Ames. Where do you go from there? Seriously?

  20. Massachusetts Conservative Says:

I pray that Santorum drops out. He has no shot, and is wasting our time and thoughts.

He is also a hypocritical two-face.

  21. Craig For Huck Says:

I actually like the Rick Santorums and Ron Pauls in the mix.

It balances out the Kargers and Newts in our party.

This Big Tent Party of addition not subtraction thing can be very tricky, unsettling, and downright bitter at times, but the more the merrier in all cases is the best way to beat that other formidable big tent party, imho.

Politics is simply a numbers game.

  22. Craig For Huck Says:

As far as money goes, it’s not what you raise. It’s the bang you get outa each and every buck on the campaign trail.

Message is far more important and you can get that out through the free media and the volunteer troups on the ground.

  23. Craig For Huck Says:

The list of candidates who lost while attempting to buy the nomination or election is deep.

  24. Smack1968 Says:

It’s very important that you all read this article. I told you all that these stories would start showing up.

Bachmann does not have the organization on the ground….not doing the dirty work.

    Not collecting contact cards.

Please read…..and take this article seriously…….we…..the ones on the ground know this story is accurate.

    http://theiowarepublican.com/2011/bachmann%e2%80%99s-weekend-job-%e2%80%93-running-for-president/

t appears that campaigning in Iowa is limited to just weekends for Michele Bachmann. The Iowa frontrunner has yet to do anything but show-up in the state on weekends. What is even more head scratching is that she continues to focus almost entirely on central Iowa.

Bachmann will return to the state tomorrow for an event in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon. The rest of her schedule includes a stroll on Pella’s town square, church in Des Moines, then breakfast at the Iowa Machine Shed. Just like the rest of her tours, Bachmann’s visits are more designed to get media coverage than actually help her lay the ground work that will help her be successful in Ames and in the caucuses early next spring.

At this point, I don’t even understand why Bachmann is spending money having a campaign bus. Candidates use buses for extensive tours of the state, not the quick in and out visits like Bachmann is making. The daily rate for Bachmann’s bus is $1600 a day. When the bus is not is use, the minimum fee is $750. She also has to pay for fuel and lodging for the bus driver. Yesterday, a Bachmann staffer took the bus to Ames to see how it would fit on their straw poll lot. Later it dropped him off at the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters for the Straw Poll meeting.

Bachmann’s campaign is currently living off of media attention and hype. If she wants to win, she needs to get serious about campaigning in Iowa. If she would aggressively travel the state by holding town hall meetings in multiple counties, she would be able to sign people up and capitalize on her current momentum.

Hanging around Des Moines on the weekends to attend sporting events and church services either indicates that you don’t have a campaign apparatus that can pull of a series of events, or they have become lazy as a result of their poll numbers and media attention.

The Bachmann team needs to realize that President Bush, Steve Forbes, and Mitt Romney worked their tails off to turn people out to the Straw Poll. They also need to realize that the “Huckabee Magic” from four years ago worked because he beat expectations. As the frontrunner, Bachmann can’t beat expectations – she has to meet them. That means she has to win comfortably. Anything else would be an embarrassment.

  25. Reginald Says:

It appears that Bachmann quit her church last month. http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/07/15/michele-bachmann-officially-leaves-her-church/?hpt=hp_t2

Wonder if she found a new one.

  26. Smack1968 Says:

…she quit 6 days before she announced that she is running for President.

  27. Smack1968 Says:

….let me put it this way.

Bachmann was a member of her church when it suited her…………she threw the church under the bus when it suited her.

  28. Steven S Says:

By the time we get to the Fall of 2012, both presidential candidates will be hated by a majority of voters. All the GOP candidates are flawed. So what else is going to surprise us?

  29. Jaxemer11 Says:

23 – The list of candidates who have won with no money is pretty short.

  30. Jaxemer11 Says:

24 she is only working on the weekends and still beating Pawlenty by 25% in the polls? What does that say about your guy.

  31. Jaxemer11 Says:

27 – That is quite the charge. What was wrong with her church?

  32. Smack1968 Says:

    Jax,

What did I say that was so wrong? Bachmann was a church member for 10 years and then quit 6 days before she was to run for the Presidency.

Maybe it was because her church believes the office of the pope is the antichrist.

Again, I don’t want to get into religion…I’m not saying it’s wrong or right to believe that… I will just stick to the fact she left her church to go on to the big stage.

Why do you think she left her church 6 days before announcing her running for President?….do you think it coul d have been because she was worried about her church beliefs in the Papacy?

…or do you think she didn’t like the carpeting…or better yet did Marcus not like the carpeting?

Politcally she used her church to get in the religious community…to win her 6th district. Now she has her sight on something bigger so she throws her church under the bus.

  33. Smack1968 Says:

    jax,

Trump was beating my guy by 25% in the polls as well……so what?

Romney was beating Huck by 25% at this time in “07″….so what?

If you just watch the scoreboard Jax, you will miss on what is going on in the game.

  34. Protectlife Says:

I am no Bachmann fan but Smack’s post runs contrary to everything else that has been reported regarding Bachmann’s organization. It is apparently quite strong.

Also, calling Bachmann’s number disappointing is absolutely laughable — she raised $2 million in two weeks. TWO WEEKS. That’s on pace for $12 million for the quarter.

Again, I am not a Bachmann fan — I am hoping for Perry, but her campaign is impressive.

  35. Jaxemer11 Says:

@32 – She hasn’t attended that church in 2 years. Maybe she wanted to save them the trouble of having to deal with reporters. It sounds like you are trying to smear her unfairly with this to me.

@33 – You were the one that brought up how hard she was working. If she can beat your guy by 25% while only working on the weekends, why is that a problem? Plus, at this time in 2007, Huckabee was not working at all in Iowa. Your guy has been there for 2 years.

Bachmann is crazy, but if you are going to smear her, at least do it in a way that doesn’t patronize us. We aren’t stupid.

  36. Smack1968 Says:

Huck was in Iowa for 6 straight weeks before AMES…did not miss a day…still was at 5% before AMES….12% 6 weeks after AMES.

You are stuck on scoreboard watching…polls today do not predict the winner.
