Tim Pawlenty, The Tax-Wrecker

Sometimes you can gain insight into a Republican by what the Democrats say about him. Back in 2008, when Pawlenty was being considered for the Vice-Presidential slot by John McCain, the Minnesota Independent tried to sideswipe Pawlenty with this quote in an article entitled, How Tim Pawlenty Made his Case for VP by Wrecking the Minnesota Economy, (by Britt Robson):

Voters across the country might be interested to know that no one has been more influential than Pawlenty in reversing Minnesota’s longstanding tradition of using progressive taxes to make prudent but significant investments in our social and physical infrastructure — education, transportation, health care and the environment  (emphasis mine).

Among complaints Robson makes about Pawlenty:

“A biennial budget that contained more than $2.7 billion worth of tax relief” (It was more than twice as large, per capita, as any other state tax cut in the nation.)

“The very next year …returned hundreds of millions of dollars through an income tax cut and reduced vehicle license fees”.

“Lowered property taxes”

“Rebated $700 million worth of sales taxes back to citizens”

“Pawlenty had signed a pledge not to raise taxes. As billions of dollars’ worth of state programs were slashed, most of them in health and human services, the governor stood fast on his pledge”

“To dramatize just how radical this no-taxes stance was… Pawlenty has tenaciously rebuffed any income tax increases during his six years in office”

I can only say one thing to Governor Pawlenty: “With enemies like these, who needs friends?”  Maybe you should have these Democrats campaign with you or have Robson create your next campaign ad.

Now if only Pawlenty could get a charisma infusion, he might be a strong candidate.

  2. Bluegrass State of Mind Says:

Has Shedlock jumped on the TPaw Bandwagon? Now, do we have to start putting up with his nonsensical articles all the time, again?

  3. Granny T Says:

I just read on Facebook that Sarah will be working with the Pawlenty campaign – Pawlenty’s new senior political advisor: Huckabee’s daughter

Will she be able to get her dad’s endorsement for her new boss? Will she be able to sell T-Paw on the FairTax?
If so, Gov. Huckabee might be more willing to endorse him.

  4. Sean P Says:

Some wreckage. Minnesotta’s unemployment rate is 6.5 percent — clost to three points lower than the national average. I can think about two hundred million people who probably wish their governors “wrecked” their economy in a similar fahion.

    LOL – nice post, David.

Or by what Republicans say about him:

I see that you are a TPaw supporter now Shedlock. Did the purchase of Huckabee’s daughter’s psuedo-endorsement do it for you?

  7. Jaxemer11 Says:

3 – Would Huckabee endorsement someone at 5% in the polls?

  8. Jaxemer11 Says:

4 – That was in 2008, not now. It is much higher than that now.

  9. David Shedlock Says:

You are wrong on so many counts, my friend.

First, 7 – yes, he would. Unlike some other candidates he doesn’t wait for the horse to be in front to bet. He endorsed Rubio when he was at 15% in a two-man race.

Second, please get your facts straight. 6.6% is barely higher than 6.5%. But you continue to show such hatred for all things Huck that you believe what you want to believe, in spite of the facts.

Third, I have made no comments about the hire of Mrs. Sanders. You are just guessing.

Fourth, you are wrong about me being a supporter of Pawlenty. Right now, he is several places down the list, I’m not sure I could even vote for him, depending on his position on abortion. But unlike you, I am quite capable of saying good things about candidates I disagree with. I have written positive posts in the past about Palin and Santorum, and I have defended Romney against unfair attacks. You don’t help your cause or candidate when you take everything personal and simply attack people. Grow up.

  10. David Shedlock Says:

I didn’t even know about the Sanders hire until after I finished the post on Pawlenty.

  11. Sean P Says:

    #8 – Unemployment was 6.6 percent in May 2011. Not 2008. May 2011.
