Raising Ten and a Quarter Million Bucks Isn’t All Mitt Did Today

After today’s record-breaking telethon, Mitt headed to nearby UNLV (University of Nevada — Las Vegas) where he treated a dozen Republican students to a meal at In-and-Out Burger — a popular fast food place in these parts. While eating, he talked economic policy. He chowed down his burger while his guests just nibbled on some fries. “Looks like I’m the only guy who wanted a burger at four in the afternoon”, he quipped. Of course, his body was likely still on Boston time (7:00PM).

I can’t help but contrast that with another Massachusetts resident who recently ran for President. The story is told of John Kerry’s 2004 campaign bus pulling up to a Wendy’s somewhere in New York state. Kerry and company got out and ordered food just like a regular Joe (chili and cheeseburgers). He and his entourage then took their orders and piled back onto the bus where they promptly tossed the peasant food into the trash and dined on gourmet takeout instead.

Some of Mitt’s comments this afternoon:

  • On Mike Huckabee’s decision not to run: “I took that news with mixed emotions. On the one hand, I’m happy to not be facing a tough and effective competitor in Mike. But on the other hand, he’d be a veteran and we’d have good times together. And I’ll miss him on the campaign trail.”
  • In reply to questions about health care: “We have in my state a curriculum that we provide to all of our schools, our high schools, and we test kids across the state on our curriculum. I like what we’ve done, it’s a pretty good job. But the last thing I’d suggest is to take the Massachusetts curriculum for schools and have President Obama tell every state they’ve got to use the Massachusetts curriculum. That would make no sense at all. The needs of different students and the rights of people in different states have to be recognized.”
  • On reaching out to Hispanic voters: “In my view we as a party must connect with Hispanic voters. If we do our job and do our job well, we’ll have Hispanic voters voting for conservatives, voting for Republicans, because ours is the party of opportunity. And people who come here as immigrants overwhelmingly come here for opportunity, not for checks from government.”

That comment about Mike Huckabee is interesting in light of what Mike said yesterday about Mitt:

“[L]et me tell you something. I’ve got a wonderful voice mail from Mitt Romney last night, which I thought was gracious on his part. You know, there has been a lot of talk about Mitt Romney and me. And we don’t socialize together. We’re not close, you know, in personal ways.

But I want to make it very clear today, if Mitt Romney is the nominee for our party, I will support him because I believe that Mitt Romney would be better president of the United States than Barack Obama on any day. And whether he is my first choice, I will support him if he is our nominee. And he very well may be.”

It would appear that Mike is at last intent upon letting bygones be bygones. Good for him. I wish him well.

  1. Dave Says:

Mitt, according to recent polling by Dick Morris, will get most of Trump’s support and about a third of Huckabee’s. Morris was gritting his teeth when he said it.

BTW, The hundreds of volunteers who donated their time to raise the $10 1/2 Million for Romney deserve maximum kudos for a job well done. Patriots of the highest order.

  2. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

    1. Agree with everything Dave said. I think Mitt is a class act. I wish they had In N Out on the east coast :(

  3. Smittens for Mittens Says:

#2, we do have Five Guys out here, which is way better than In ‘N’ Out. For serial.

On the story, I have true affection for Mr. Romney (see user name, duh), and I think the base will start to consolidate around him as the best choice to stand on a stage and tell Barack Obama what is wrong with is policies.

I hope Mike Huckabee’s supporters can place their suspicions aside and look at the man’s integrity, his managerial brilliance, and his intelligence.

  4. TEX Says:

    Dave

    “Patriots of the highest order.”
    =========================================

    LOL!

I hope you are not talking about fat cats Wall Street bankers, the crooks who will end up in prison in 2013,after President Sarah Palin hunts them down and puts them in a chain gang wearing orange jump suits.

  5. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

” The story is told of John Kerry’s 2004 campaign bus pulling up to a Wendy’s somewhere in New York state. Kerry and company got out and ordered food just like a regular Joe (chili and cheeseburgers).”

Yeah but you wrote Mitt ate the burger in front of the students. Are you trying to say Mitt is bulimic?

  6. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

“#2, we do have Five Guys out here, which is way better than In ‘N’ Out. For serial.”

Yeah it’s ok, I rarely eat fast food. Same stuff in the end I guess!

  7. Rombot Says:

Very classy move from Mitt. I wondered why he didn’t release a public statement about Huck on Saturday with everyone else. I worried that some would make a big deal out of that, as if it were a sign that Mitt was holding a grudge against Huck (something I never believed). Mitt never intended that voice mail to go public. That is the sign of a true gentleman. His life is full of that kind of stuff. He does a lot for people that goes un-publicized. I know that is probably hard for some of you Mitt haters to believe.

  8. Rombot Says:

3 – You are exactly right. Five Guys is much better than In-n-Out. ;)

  9. Jonathan Says:

Sounds like he’s settling comfortably into the role of frontrunner; talking about broadening the base, saying gracious things about a former competitor, trying the Bush Big Buck Bang (raising a ton of money at the start to scare off competitors) and the one-two combo of trying to “act like a regular guy” and then switch into Presidential mode.

I don’t doubt for a second that Romney will be a formidable contender for the nomination; not invincible certainly, but formidable.

  10. ogrepete Says:

We’ve got both Five Guys and In-n-Outs here in Utah. They’re both good and neither one is really “fast” food.

I seriously wonder if Mitt wins how much he would consider asking Mike Huckabee to be his running mate. Mike would kick the crap out of Joe Biden in a debate, but it would really shore up Social Conservative support.

I know, I know. I’m thinking way too far ahead.

  11. Dave Says:

    Tex,

Did you REALLY mean to suggest that Sarah will become President and hunt down the everyday Americans who manned phones to raise more than $10 Million for Mitt….and throw them into chain gangs after giving them orange jump suits??

I mean, did you REALLY say that??

BTW, I hope Sarah never gets Free And Strong America’s donor list. I don’t want to be thrown into a chain gang.

  12. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

    11. LOL!!! If it happens how TEX sees it, it will be McCarthyism all over again.

  13. marK Says:

I’ve eaten at an In-N-Out exactly once. I ordered the hamburger and kept asking myself while eating it, “Is THIS what everyone raves about?” I was not impressed.

  14. Dave Says:

It should be mentioned in passing that Olympic Speed Skaters Dan Jansen and Derek Parra were 2 of the volunteers at the fundraising event, and that SuperModel Cindy Crawford instructed the more than 700 volunteers how to use the Software (dubbed ComMitt) for the effort.

  15. Jerald Says:

    TEX…

Where are you getting the “fat cat” meme from….Liberals?

It might be news to you, but “fat cats” can only donate the same amount as “regular Joes”.

Not to mention your assumption that all Romney supporters are fat cats is way off…..I’m living proof of that :(

  16. TEX Says:

    Dave,

    Relax.

Only the corrupt, crooked Wall Street bankers who gave Mitt $10.2 million dollars today will end up in chain gang wearing orange jump suits.

They relieved themselves from $10 million dollars for what?
    To buy favors!That’s why!

It’s criminal if you can prove it.It’s not easy.
But ferocious and relentless Sarahcuda is the ONLY American politician
who will go for it,succeed and put the slimeballs in chain gang orange suits.

I’m talking about Wall Street crooks in general,so some Mitt’s friends
with some luck might escape Sarahcuda’s justice.

  17. Jerald Says:

#16…..Come on TEXY, get a grip.

You said Saracuda would have no problem raising money…..Is all that money going to come from Wall Street bankers locking up favors or from drug dealers hoping to get passed over by Sherif Sarah?……Or, just maybe, from regular supporters.

Get a grip TEX, face it, Mitt has lots of supporters :)

  18. Jerald Says:

    #18

You are aware, TEX, that Palin can’t raise any money for a campaign unless she has an exploratory committee or announces she running…..which……means…….she’s not raising squat right now…

  19. TEX Says:

Sarah Palin will declare on July 3rd or 4th.
And the money floodgate will bust open.

Governor Palin will have all the money she will ever need and want!!!

  20. Jerald Says:

#19…..Will she be getting it from fat cats and other people that will need to go to jail and where orange prison clothes?

I mean, where will all that money come from if not regular supporters like Mitt?

    The French Underground? ;)

Come on TEX, admitted it, Romney and Rombots are real people with real lives just like Palin and her supporters…

  21. Rombot Says:

I’m beginning to think TEX is a parody.

  22. Dave Says:

Mitt has more than 900,000 friends on FaceBook, not including those of us who never indulge in FaceBook. I’ve never understood the point of it. I don’t even like telephones.

  23. TEX Says:

    Robots,

Mitt is a good, nice, decent man.I like the guy.
    He’s not the problem.

    Wall Street corrupt,crooked bankers are!!!

  24. asparagus Says:

I wish Mitt would take me out to In and Out. There’s some new ones that just opened up here in DFW. Next time he is in town, he can take me to Whataburger. Doesn’t matter where, I just want a free meal!

  25. Franklin Says:

Mitt has more than 900,000 friends on FaceBook, not including those of us who never indulge in FaceBook. I’ve never understood the point of it. I don’t even like telephones.
    =======================================
Palin is closing in on 3,000,000. The fact is that Romney doesn’t get most of his money from Regular Joes but from fat cats and bundlers. If Wall Street had their way, we would never get the debt under control. They give most of their money to Romney. We’ll get more people from Goldman Sachs running this country’s finances.

  26. zeek Says:

I knew Mr. Romney would be dignified and kind in his response to Huckabee. It was an easy call because it is Mitt’s nature. I appreciate much more his private gracious response rather than one planned to be seen by the public. I also appreciate this positive public response of Mitt about Mike. I owe everyone here an apology because… I said some mean things about Huckabee after he got out of the race. (I really wanted them both to face off.) The fact that Mike Huckabee volunteered this information flies in the face of what I said. In my mind this does not negate all the other things of seen, but then again perhaps I am judging Mike huckabee with the same rigid, unyielding glasses others have judged Romney with. Someone could objectively argue that if mike Huckabee was the petty man I said he was he would never have told of Mitt’s nice call and gracious words. Kudos to Mike.

  27. Colorado Guy Says:

Mitt Romney is a good man and has a capable, very capable, fundraising apparatus.

However, he was a good man and had a very capable fundraising apparatus in 2008 and that wasn’t enough to get him the nomination. Unbeknownst to many on this site, including the Romney sycophants and apologists, many in the GOP are uncomfortable with him; and I do not need to enumerate the reasons why.

Governor Mandate will attempt to buy himself the nomination once again. We all knew thsat going in. The $10,250,000.00+ he raised today does not change the dynamic of this race one iota.

  28. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

“If Wall Street had their way, we would never get the debt under control. They give most of their money to Romney. We’ll get more people from Goldman Sachs running this country’s finances.”

You sound ridiculous. Please go back to the Daily Kos, we have enough conspiracy theories here.

  29. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

“The $10,250,000.00+ he raised today does not change the dynamic of this race one iota.”

Yea only having 10 Million more than your other opponents is no sweat, right? Mitt haters need better talking points, seriously.

  30. Colorado Guy Says:

New York – by what margin did Romney out-raise McCain and Huckabee, his two most significant opponents, in 2008? Are we talking about President Romney’s re-election bid right now?

Answer those two questions and get back to me.

In today’s information age where anyone, anywhere, can get 24/7/365 access to political news and analysis, the money advantage, no matter how substantial, is far closer to meaningless than it every has been.

  31. New York for Romney 2012 Says:

    30. You’re clearly saying that money plays no role in politics. I have to say you are tremendously wrong. McCain already ran for President in 2000, so he had higher name recognition. And Huckabee was an evangelical who played on those voters.

McCain and Huckabee are no longer in the race. There’s no ‘replica’ of McCain or Huckabee. The dynamics change from race to race, you can’t apply standards to scenarios where the conditions are different.

  32. thunder Says:

This was what is known in naval terms as a shot over the bow. Romney is telling anyone in or out of the game if the come, they better bring their ‘A’ game, because he has the ammunition to go all the way.

Something like this has to give Daniels and anyone else who is still thinking of running second thoughts.

  33. Jrcutler Says:

    Romney/Huckabee 2012!

  34. Somone You Know Says:

What about when he ate KFC with silverware in 2008? LOL.

  35. Jerald Says:

#34…Somone you Know (but apparently doesn’t know himself/herself…)

You people just cannot stop with the disinformation can you?
    What are you, apprentice liberals?

The KFC thing was not eating with silverware. All he did was remove breaded skin when eating the chicken while the cameras were rolling.
Huckabee noticed this and mentioned it as part of his strategy to tell folks, “Romney’s not like us.”

    But Huckabee was right.
Romney is not like most people.

Look at him, because he is careful about what he eats and exercises, he looks better and is in better shape than most 40 year olds.

We could use a POTUS with some self-discipline…

If you are really a Republican/Conserviative/SoCon, why not try being informed and honest?

  36. Jerald Says:

Colorado Guy…..Why don’t you just come out and say you can’t stand Romney and leave it at that. Trying to justify it with stupid arguments does you no good.

You answer me a couple of question:

    1. If Huckabee and McCain would have had the opportunity to raise more money in 2008, would they have gladly taken it and used it to strengthen their campaigns?

    2. Would any of the current candidates turn down any honestly donated campaign funds–Especially going up against Obama?

Also, your Internet driven 24/7 “news” argument doesn’t work either. Why? Because any yahoo can spread disinformation, falsehoods, and rumors that pick up a life of their own and make it much harder for candidates to define themselves and keep the voters focused on their message and forces them so spend inordinant time and resources responding to the junk. In view of that, I would say it takes even MORE campaign donations to run a successful campaign…

  37. Jon Huntsman for Obama Says:

This whole business about Mitt Romney losing to McCain despite Mitt’s superior fundraising…

Mitt used his money on attack ads in 2008. And it turned out that those attack ads did more harm than good.

He has learned his mistakes. He will not be running attack ads this time around.

He also will not be using his personal money this time around.

And ask yourselves… How did nominating the fundraising lightweight McCain work for us??? Obama smoked him, and McCain’s poor campaign did not help.

  38. Jon Huntsman for Obama Says:

Mitt will use his money on positive ads, travel expenses, and consultants and operatives.

He will use it on ground game too.

    Be afraid.

    Smell the fear.

    They know.

  39. Smack1968 Says:

Newt was on with Bennett this morning.

Newt says he is a threat to the establishment wing of the GOP party.

Newt needs to get on Meds right now.

The race is over for him, in regards to actually being the nominee.

You might think I’m being too harsh…but I’m right.

The Mandate Faction: Newt & Mitt..will not survive the nomination fight for the soul of the party.

  40. MarqueG Says:

Just checking the last 24 hours of news headlines that Google could mine, and Mitt’s money-bomb performance earned him 8k vs. 10k for the Great Gingrich Gaffe! That’s pretty good, I must say, since Mitt’s story is less than 24 hours old. And also considering the fact that what bleeds, ledes. And the news of Newt is the bloodiest so far from the GOP Prez primary.

Bonus points for at least two different top-of-page headlines on DrudgeReport in the past 12 hours.

I’m no Mitt fan, but kudos for a job well done!

  41. Liz Says:

I got food poisoning at Five Guys, and it cost a LOT more. My vote is for In Out Burger.

Romney is a class act. Forge onward, great leader.

  42. Doug NYC GOP Says:

#35 – Stalwart defense Jerald, well done and said. Mitt is about 10 yrs older than Huck. I’ll leave it at that.

Huck was gracious to bring up the phone call he received from Romney, and it takes some of the bite out of my feelings for the guy. If he is serious about helping out, he would be a formidable surrogate for the GOP in the fall of 2012. He’ll be very key to helping with voter turnout.

  43. ex-huckarubio aka Santorubio?? Says:

    33. Huck will not take a VP nod…if he wanted a place on the ticket he would have run for the top slot.

  44. MarqueG Says:

Just for a heads-up, comparing MarK’s rundown (which I trust) to the story on TheDC, someone might want to ask them for a correction.

While MarK says Mitt answered a health care question, The Daily Caller says this about the Facebook town hall:

The five questions he took did not touch on any of his trouble spots – health care or social issues

Bias is one thing; factual sloppiness is something entirely different.

  45. Doug NYC GOP Says:

5 Guys is ok. I had an In N OUt in arizona once. My wife’s family lives in Branson, MO and they love Sonic. All of them were OK – better than McDonald’s (which is not the Gold Standard) but still very “fast foodish” – well done (a Cardinal Sin in my book for a burger or steak) etc.

The best kept secret is this; Diner have the best burgers.

Good portion size, usually flame broiled/grilled, the bun is soft and not too big, cheese on both side and oooozing juice when you bite into a perfect medium rare. Add fries and a tall Vanilla Shake and you have my final Death Row meal.

  46. marK Says:

    My favorite comment about McDonald’s:
“You’ll never get a bad hamburger at McDonald’s. You’ll never get a good one, either.”

  47. Mark in PA Says:

Best burger I’ve ever had was at a New Mexico chain called Blake’s Lotta Burger. In and Out burgers are good, as are the burgers up here in the north east, but nothing compares to Blakes!

$10 Million haul in one day is VERY impressive. It’s natural that the only thing his detractors can say is “he’s trying to buy the race!” As if raising money is a bad thing.
And for the record, TEX. Just because a person works on Wall Street and/or makes money, does not make them dishonest and/or criminals.
Also for the record, Wall Street donates more to the Dems than the GOP, anyway – don’t be fooled.

  48. pea-jay Says:

Nice choice of dinner, Doug, but I hope you aren’t planning on murdering anyone

  49. teledude Says:

I’ve never been to a Five Guys or In and Out Burger (only heard of it in the movie ‘The Big Lebowski” – best movie ever)

Here in Iowa my favorite burger place is Fuddruckers. They’re awesome!

    Red Robin is just okay…

    Are these places comparable?

  50. Jon Huntsman for Obama Says:

    How about Ruby Tuesday burgers?

  51. Mark in PA Says:

    @ 49
Been to Fudruckers and Red Robin. Those are little different league, since they are definitely NOT fast food. Meaning that they are both bigger, but more expensive. I prefer Red Robin over Fudruckers.
In and Out burgers are in the same class as Sonic, McD’s, Wendys, A&W, etc. Of that class, Blakes is my favorite – but it’s only in NM.

  52. Mark in PA Says:

    @ 50
I always get ribs when I go to Ruby Tues.

  53. Matt "MWS" Says:

Yesterday Mitt also said the bloated DoD budget- which has doubled since 2001- shouldn’t be cut.

Mitt’s credibility as a budget hawk took a hit.

  54. Mark in PA Says:

Romney truly showed with this early number why he is a top contender, and the most likely guy to get the nomination… mandates or no mandates. Nobody brings in that kind of cash without having a nationwide hard support base.

  55. Mark in PA Says:

    @ 53
Do YOU think we should cut the DoD budget? Your credability as a practical guy just went down, MWS! ;-)

Or do you think the world is suddenly a safer place?

  56. Alvin Says:

Mitt is a class act. The 2008 campaign really soured me to him, until I realized that his supporters, like some supporters for each candidate, formed my opinion of the Governor. They downplay their role, but I don’t think they understand how many in their ranks patrol message boards and talk down to the people who have the audacity to support someone else. It is not like they are going to cost him the nomination or anything, but they do him no favors, and they represent him poorly. Mitt has proven gracious and I am impressed with his campaign strategy so far, much better than 2008…

An impressive haul yesterday, really speaks to the level of support out there for him. He will be a great general election candidate, if he can get out of the primaries. Which will not be easy.

  57. Alvin Says:

I have heard so much about In N Out, but living in North Carolina really makes it hard to see what the hype is all about. I hear very, very good things about it. Fuddruckers is excellent but I enjoy Five Guys even more, great food.

  58. Alvin Says:

    1,

I would take anything Dick Morris says with a grain of salt…

  59. Mark in PA Says:

    @ 56
I agree that his campaign will be different this go round. Mitt tried so hard to “draw distinctions” and “comparisons of record” with other candidates last time that he ran a very negative campaign. I heard that some of the staffers who pushed him the hardest on that kind of stuff are no longer on his campaign. He now has the name recognition up so that he doesn’t need to attack others nearly so much. He needs to sell his message of pro-jobs and being the real pro at the economy, and put his attacks to Obama. This campaign will be very different than ’08.

I agree that supporters who talk down to others are not good for thier candidates. We’ll have some spirited debate, but in the end, I hope we are all united against Obama!

  60. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Mark,

“Do YOU think we should cut the DoD budget? Your credability as a practical guy just went down, MWS!”

Yes, I do. I don’t think we need to account for roughly 40% of the worlds arms procurement. I think the DoD budget is a whorehouse of corporate welfare. Hell, look at the Congressional career of John Murtha for a glipse at what gets funneled to donors. I don’t think we should continue to borrow from Europe and Japan to defend Europe and Japan. Our DoD essentially props up and enables the European welfare state.

And BTW, I love TPaw, but his awesomeness took a major hit for me when he said the same thing as Mitt a while back.

  61. Doug NYC GOP Says:

    Matt,

Romney has stated he would not like to cut DoD, but would make it more efficient and seek new innovations. Back in 1980 when DoD budget cuts were being bandied about as ways to reduce the deficit, Reagan increased DoD spending. A lot of the spending went into new innovation and technology and research. That helped spur not only private sector growth, but resulted in an explosion of trickle down technology. Technology we all take fro granted today – cellphones, satellite TV, lasers, etc.

As the world is NOT a safer place, auditing, streamlining, freiing up dollars to re-use in different areas, will pay dividends far beyond a simple budget cut.

  62. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Mark in PA,

And speaking of being practical, do you think it’s practical to suppose that we can get the bipartisan support necessary to close a $1.5 trillion per year deficit without touching defense?

While I’m very distressed at the ignorance and selfishness of the masses regarding the sacrifices needed to balance the budget, I’m also becoming uncreasingly disturbed by the number of Republicans who seem to think we can have everything our own way on the budget. That kind of mentality will only guarantee the status quo, which is heading toward financial and economic ruin.

  63. Doug NYC GOP Says:

    #48 – Nah…I’m a lover not a fighter!

I alos don’t like these double or triple burgers you see people creating on the cooking shows. I saw one the other day, it wa an Italian Hero, topped with 3 buger patties, held together with 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Seriously?

I also don’t like a bun that is too big or thick. Soft, thin, lightly buttered than placed on the griddle till lightly toasted…..

  64. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Doug,

Do you seriously think the DoD can come up with those non-military advances more efficiently than the private sector- were the money left there?

And while Mitt is promising to make the DoD better, we need to make it cheaper. If he’s going to make it more efficient- whereby they can do the same job they’re doing now with less money- I don’t know why he insists on pouring that saved money back into the cauldron. It’s not like the numbers we’re spending now come from Holy Writ.

I think Mitt’s (and TPaw’s) promise not to cut spending- despite all of those inefficiencies they promise to wring out- is more about establishing their DefCon cred than fealty to some magical baseline number that must be spent at all cost.

  65. Matt "MWS" Says:

    On the burger tangent:

I heard on NPR this morning that some guy is supposed to eat his 25,000th Big Mac today. Yes, he has been eating two per day, every day, for about 4 decades.

Unbelievable. I hope he donates his arteries to McDonald’s so they can recover all that lard for their deep fryers.

  66. hamaca Says:

I wonder if Huck saw Mitt’s name on his cell phone and didn’t answer because he thought he might be getting some push back regarding the first segment of his show.

After two years of no burgers, I was able to have my first one just a month ago. The venue I chose was Cheeseburger Cheeseburger in Baton Rouge. It was an emotional experience for me as I sank my teeth into it and savored bite after bite.

Taking DoD off the table is concerning. Even by holding it level, thereby reducing it as a percentage of a growing GDP, does not help much to accomplish the reduction in spending we need. I have to see whether enough is slashed elsewhere, i.e. an entire budget, before passing final judgement on anyone’s plan.

  67. Jerald Says:

    #43..Ex-Huckarubio

    Exactly

Huck as VP talk is silly talk.

  68. Jerald Says:

    #45…..Doug….Thanks for the compliment, but…

Lay off of the medium rare hamburgers….You can get some lethal food poisoning eating that stuff.

    Medium rare steak is OK.

The difference is the lethal bacteria is on the surface and not inside the meat, so if the surface is cooked well, you’re OK.

But ground beef mixes the bacteria throughout the meat, so if it isn’t completely heated/cooked properly, you might not be around to vote for Romnney, which would be a shame.

PS. This is unbiased advice…..I spent decades in Japan and eat lots of raw stuff….including stuff I won’t admit to Americans….but I will add that anybody who takes a perfectly good tuna and puts it in a can should get life in the slammer……Fresh raw tuna is out of this world, although fresh grilled tuna is heavenly as well…

  69. Dan Says:

I wonder if http://mittromneycentral.com/2011/05/14/mike-huckabee-decides-not-to-run-in-2012-and-his-supporters-should-read-this/ had anything to do with Huck and Romney making up?

  70. Doug NYC GOP Says:

Jerald – I appreciate your concern. I work in food service and you have a terrific understanding of the dangers with ground beef v. a steak. Good Show.

I too love Tuna (and all sushi/sashmi) raw or quickly seared. Salmon as well. I worked in a restaurant once, where we cooked the salmon slowly under a heat lamp. It cooked through but maintained a raw like look. It was so good. Melted like butter. If you do it at home, try baking at 200=250 degrees, in a regular oven. It will get some color, but come out really nice, due to the fat content which acts like a self baster.

Concern aside, Mid-rare gets the nod..:)

And I will be aroung to vote for Romney in 2012 and the 2016 re-election.

  71. Doug NYC GOP Says:

Jerald – I also must confess, I do like a good Tuna Salad sandwich…Chicken Salad as well (especially with walnuts and grapes)

  72. Jerald Says:

Doug, I’ll take it as a promise that you will still be around to vote for Mitt :)

I’ll make an exception for tuna salad sandwiches. I used to got for bonito as a substitute for the tuna, but then I discovered all the wonderful things Japanese do with bonito, so I think people that can bonito should also go into the slammer…. ;)

  73. Rombot Says:

27 – I think you do need to enumerate the reasons why, because no one seems to be willing to.

  74. Rombot Says:

53 – Why don’t you give his full statement on that issue?

  75. Jerald Says:

Doug……PS…..Quit making me hungery with the salmon talk!

    I grew up in the Pacific Northwest…..we don’t eat bread…..we eat salmon…

  76. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Rombot,

“Why don’t you give his full statement on that issue?”

Why, did he later say he was kidding?

  77. Rombot Says:

TEX, one of the best people I know is a senior partner at Goldman Sachs. I would trust him with my life. There is no need for that type of demagoguery and stereotyping.

  78. Rombot Says:

76 – No, the rest of the paragraph following that statement that you forgot to include. Or maybe you didn’t forget.

  79. Jerald Says:

MWS…..I think you need a vacation.

Can I recommend running with the bulls?

It will use up some of that excess orneriness, round off those sharp edges, and open you your horizons beyond “snarkiness without a cause” ;)

  80. Matt "MWS" Says:

I am a grill and bbq-aholic. I love smoking and grilling anything with wings or 4 legs.

You guys are seriously tempting me to take off early and roast some animal flesh over a charcoal fire!

  81. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Rombot,

“No, the rest of the paragraph following that statement that you forgot to include. Or maybe you didn’t forget”

I didn’t read the presentation. I was going off a news summary. Why don’t you post the part you think is relevent so we will all be edified?

  82. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Jerald,

“MWS…..I think you need a vacation.”

I’ve had one weekend vacation and one week long vacation in the last 8 years. Not counting going to the inlaws for Thanksgiving, that’s it.

  83. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Rombot,

    “Or maybe you didn’t forget.”

Did you forget what happened the last time you impugned my integrity? :-)

  84. Jerald Says:

MWS…..RE: BBQ…..I do a mean chicken BBQ, great things with salmon, and wonderful rabbit (but don’t tell anybody outside of the South, they wouldn’t understand…)

By the way, the marbled beef in Japan roasted carefully on a BBQ will melt in your mouth….One bite and you will never eat store-bought US beef again…

  85. Rombot Says:

81 – Go watch the townhall meeting clip from above.

  86. Jerald Says:

MWS……Now that you mention it, I haven’t really had a vacation in decades if that means you can go somewhere nice and not have to think about business/handle business in the mean time.

We need to stop being self-employed for a week and take our families somewhere together for a week…

  87. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Jerald,

I often fantasize what it would be like to work for State Farm (who seems to employ everyone else here in town). From what I gather from friends, its a lot like working in France, or being a part of AFSME.

  88. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Jerald,

Is the beef you had in Japan called Wagyu? I’ve read of it, but never had it.

  89. Granny T Says:

    Dan,
Thank you for posting the link to the article at mittromneycentral. I’m glad that someone is finally reporting that Huckabee personally apologized to Romney shortly after the article came out and Romney accepted the apology. As I pointed out in 2008 I found it ironic that the reporter that wrote that very controversial article was nominated for a prize by the MSM. (Apparently writing an article that divides the GOP is worthy of prizes???) I hope that since Huckabee is no longer the competition that dead horse will be buried and forgotten.

  90. Jerald Says:

#88…MWS….Yes, wagyu means “Japanese beef” but really refers to meat from specially bred cattle that are feed special diets (which sometimes includes beer) and subjected to daily massages and other measures to keep the meat soft. There are different grades of it, with the best stuff being really expensive…but man does it make an impression…

  91. Jerald Says:

#89….Granny T, nice to see you.
    I agree with you.
I also was impressed that Mitt privately called Mike and that Mike felt that should be mentioned.

Mitt was starting to take a lot of heat for not putting out a statement, but I guess he didn’t want to take advantage of the situation and Mike felt he should mention it.

Maybe they are both trying to tell us all something about focusing on the real issue, which is putting the best possible conservative in the White House…

  92. Matt "MWS" Says:

Beer fed beef…… That has to be the ultimate in gourmet cuisine.

  93. Colorado Guy Says:

    A few more quick thoughts.

I’m trying to figure out the political strategy behind the fast food trip. Do Romney and his team of dozens (hundreds?) of very highly paid political consultants think that by making a high-profile stop at In-and-Out Burger the voters are going to forget that Romney is a silver-spooned patrician with 4 mansions and a net worth in excess of $500,000,000.00?

Secondly I was wrong in my earlier assessment that Mitt’s money advantage is inconsequential. For a candidate like Daniels or Pawlenty it would be because they each have a long record of conservative accomplishment on which to run. Mitt, on the other hand, needs to buy all the air time and ad space he can to help voters forget about the individual mandate, forget that he was “an independent during Reagan/Bush” or that he “hunted varmits all his life” (in 2006 lifetime NRA membership notwithstanding) and, of particular importance for Iowa, his “conversion” on abortion and same-sex rights.

Maybe with all this money Romney can buy a Winnebago for each of his sons to travel around Iowa “serving their country.” One Winnebago each would be even better than piling all 5 into one Winnebago like they did in the 2008 race. That would probably even make the Winnebago trip better service to their country than being in the military, putting all 5 into 1 Winnebago was only as good as military service.

We all know Romney takes the voters for fools. This is just additional evidence of that.

  94. Doug NYC GOP Says:

#93 – Utter nonesense. These cries for attention are lame.

    Dismissed.

  95. zeek Says:

Colorado guy.. I wont respond in kind but since you mentioned Romney’s money a non political book you might find fascinating is Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Make over” He explains that most of the millionairs he knows are quite thrifty. Perhaps your label of Romney and the silver spoon is a bit rash.

  96. Jerald Says:

#93…..Colorado Guy, do you have Romney trauma or something?

Romney is widely known amoung his busines associates and family as being very frugal in his business and personal life–especially for a guy that made hundreds of millions.

Your non-political bias is showing through…

  97. Colorado Guy Says:

Owning 4 mansions is now considered a frugal and austere lifestyle? What would owning 2 mansions be? What if you rent an apartment like I do?

It breaks my heart that each of zeek, Jerald and Doug NYC GOP are too above the fray to address my post. I guess even the apologists are unable to make excuses and apologize for Willard “Mandate” Romney’s record.

  98. Zeek Says:

Colorado guy you seem to be a nice fellow and probably have nice shoes as well.

  99. Jerald Says:

Colorado Guy, for whatever reason, maybe you don’t like being a renter, I don’t, you have a dislike for Gov. Romney that goes beyond the logical and enters heavily into the emotional.

What good would it do to waste our precious time discussing anything with you? Your mind is made up and you are on the war path.

Have fun whooping it up….you’re not sucking me into your world of negativity…
