Poll Watch: Rasmussen 2012 Republican Nomination Survey

Rasmussen 2012 GOP Nomination Survey (Dark Horse Edition)

If the 2012 Republican Primary for President were held today and you had a choice between Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Buddy Roemer, Gary Johnson, Thaddeus McCotter or John Huntsman for whom would you vote?

  • Michele Bachmann 27%
  • Rick Santorum 12%
  • Herman Cain 9%
  • Rick Perry 7%
  • Jon Huntsman 3%
  • Buddy Roemer 1%
  • Gary Johnson 1%
  • Thaddeus McCotter 1%
  • Some other candidate 17%
  • Undecided 22%

National survey of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters was conducted April 26, 2011. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

Inside the numbers:

Bachmann’s support climbs to 31% among unaffiliated voters who are likely to vote in a Republican primary.

Given this slate of candidates, however, 42% of Republicans who plan to vote in the primaries either want another candidate or are undecided, compared to 32% of unaffiliated primary voters.

  1. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    Michele in a LANDSLIDE!

  2. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

Let’s remove some more and get to..

    •Rick Perry 7% :)
    •Jon Huntsman 3%
    •Buddy Roemer 1%
    •Gary Johnson 1%
    •Thaddeus McCotter 1%

Hey, Perry in a landslide! ;)

  3. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

When Santorum sees this today, he’s gotta know the score. And just quit it, Rick.

  4. Craig for Romney 2012 Says:

Who the hell is Thaddeus McCotter?

  5. Craig for Romney 2012 Says:

Well this just proves Jon Huntsman is DOOMED!!!!!

  6. Rombot Says:

Why is Pawlenty not in this poll? Bachmann was doing better than him in the polls at one point, wasn’t she?

  7. Ben Says:

    Rombot -

I don’t think Rassmussen sees him as a “dark horse”

He is a full fledged 2nd tier candidate. ;)

  8. Bigots for Fred Karger Says:

    6

Because Fox News likes Bachmann, not TPaw.

What Fox News wants, it gets.

  9. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

“What Fox News wants, it gets.”

    Hope so! :)

  10. Matt "MWS" Says:

Gary Johnson still can’t break through 1% with this group?

  11. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Craig,

“Well this just proves Jon Huntsman is DOOMED!!!!!”

He’s getting 3x the support of his fellow western governor, Gary.

  12. Matt "MWS" Says:

    Craig,

Santorum’s path will be similar to Brownback’s, and he’ll drop out soon after Ames.

  13. Bigots for Fred Karger Says:

    9

    You like Trump? Interesting…

    ;)

  14. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    Bigots,

    Unlike you…

I like ALL Republicans that don’t architect RomneyCare/ObamaCare.

I like ALL Republicans who don’t flip flop several times on the killing of babies.

I like ALL Republicans who are actually authentic lifetime members of the NRA like me.

Well, you can see where I’m going with ALL this so I’ll stop here. :)

  15. Bigots for Fred Karger Says:

    14

Oh, so you don’t like Trump.

Because Trump supported government-run single-payer health care.

And Trump was pro-choice until last year.

And Trump has donated thousands to Democratic elites.

  16. Matthew Newman Says:

#4 – McCotter is a member of Congress who has quite the Twitter following.

#12 – I can definitely see that, depending on the results of Ames. It also depends on who actually is actively at the Ames Straw Poll event.

It’s an interesting poll, definitely shows a support base for Bachmann should she decide to run. It also shows that Santorum & Cain are at the top of the lesser knowns at this point. Of the two of them, I see Cain performing better in the long term than Santorum.

  17. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

Trump was not the Architect of RomneyCare/ObamaCare Mandates, Subsidies, and Exchanges in THIS country.

That would be Romney, Kennedy, Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.

I think Trump is like Reagan on abortion. Uno flip.

Trump has given more to Republicans.

  18. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    Matt,

That would be great if Santorum pulls a Brownback. Or better yet, never runs at all.

Allowing Huck/Ryan ’12 to get another step closer, imho. :)

  19. Bigots for Fred Karger Says:

    17

I have lost all respect for you.

We have a found a candidate who is clearly worse than Romney on all the issues you take issue with.

    And you still support Trump.

Wow. That is all. You have proven your credibility to be zero.

  20. Bob Hovic Says:

So Bachmann takes the Freakshow Primary 2-1.

What’s sad is that there is one semi-serious candidate in the bunch (Huntsman) and maybe two (Johnson) — and they get swamped.

  21. teledude Says:

I think it’s UNFAIR Pawlenty was included in the other poll.

He would have kicked ass in this one!

BTW, Bachmann just registered 0% in the latest Hawkeye Poll.
She’s obviously a surrogate for ‘you know who’ in this poll.

  22. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    19.

What’s your opinion of Karger? ;)

  23. SO Says:

It’s amazing how many times the name Romney shows up in a craig for chuck, craig for teflon chuck, craig for chuck/beat obama (or whatever the crap it will be later today) comments. Got Romney on the brain 24/7/365 craigee? Got a Romney poster on the wall that you throw darts at? Dream about Romney? Have a punching bag hanging from the tree in the backyard with a picture or Romney on it? Pretty scary how obsessed you are!

  24. Steven S Says:

    hahahahaha

  25. Not Your Daddy's Craig Says:

Don’t quit your day job Huntsman…oh nevermind.

  26. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

T-Paw is not a dark horse as this poll is clearly measuring. Go Bachmann!

He’s more of a lightly striped zebra.

  27. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    23.

And another uncivil hardcore Rombot appears out of nowhere to chase away possible Romney votes.

  28. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    Back on topic..

I think it’s 60/40 Bachmann will run with these encouraging numbers but derop out after Iowa.

But I think it’s almost, if not a certainty that Huck will take it all the way from Iowa to Tampa this time.

There’s going to be a lot of folks changing their handles when/if Huck is our nominee. May I suggest at least one become ‘Rombot for Huck’? ;)

‘Huckabee for 2012? seems more and more likely

just how likely it is that Huckabee will run this cycle.

Alice Stewart, Huckabee’s 2008 national press secretary, told The Daily Caller that the former governor has been meeting with donors and experts to strategize a road to victory.

“He has not made a final decision yet as to what he is going to do but I do know he has been talking with people – a lot of folks who have encouraged him to run,” Stewart said. “He has met with a lot of political folks who have told him what it could take for him to win. And he talked to some major donors to make sure that he could raise the funds necessary to compete this year.”

    CNN:

Huckabee ‘asking folks to keep their powder dry,’ adviser says

Washington (CNN) – One of Mike Huckabee’s political confidantes in the early primary state of South Carolina spoke with the former Arkansas governor Thursday and received assurances that he is still “seriously” weighing a presidential bid.

Mike Campbell, who chaired Huckabee’s South Carolina campaign in 2008, told CNN that he called his former boss after a South Carolina blog erroneously claimed that Huckabee had decided against running again in 2012.

The report quickly shot around the web Wednesday and forced Huckabee’s team to knock down the rumor.

Campbell called the blog item “a bunch of bull” but said he decided to call Huckabee anyway.

“He said, ‘Mike, obviously that’s unfounded and completely untrue,’” Campbell said of his conversation with Huckabee. “He told me, ‘I’m just asking folks to keep their powder dry because there may be something coming in the future that may be worth keeping your powder dry for.”

Asked about his presidential intentions, the former Arkansas governor told Campbell, “I am weighing it very heavily and I am considering it as seriously as I have ever been.

  30. Bigots for Fred Karger Says:

“I support Huckabee because he will increase spending and raise taxes to fix the roads.”

“Wait, isn’t Obama trying to do that?”

“Yes, but Huckabee actually accomplished it”

    “Oh my…”

  31. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    You like roads?

  32. Bigots for Fred Karger Says:

    31

“I like Huckabee because he will not have the balls to solve the debt crisis”

    “Oh, me too.”

“Yes, and I like how Mike Huckabee likes to raise taxes and tell people what their kids should eat.”

  33. China for Jon Huntsman Says:

“Oh, and I like how Huckabee thinks Obama grew up in Kenya. I like candidates who lie and distort facts.”

  34. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    30-33.

    See 27.

  35. China for Jon Huntsman Says:

34 I hope you know that not very many people actually form opinions based on comments.

  36. Craig for Huck/Beat Obama! Says:

    No, Cina…

Most folks like civility in the camp they join.

Or things start going like this for your candidate..

  37. Huntsman One Step Closer to Running « Hot Air Says:

[...] name recognition is still essentially zilch outside of political wonk circles. In the recent “dark horse poll” we referenced here previously, even if you take out all of the front runners, Huntsman still [...]

  38. Hot Air? Says:

Huntsman’s name recognition might be low at this point in time, but he just officially got in on Tuesday, and spent a good portion of his time in political office outside of the country, so of course he won’t be very well know. His record stands for itself, he won basically a supermajority in UT in 08 (He took a majority in EVERY county). And would it really be that bad to have a strong relationship with the emerging Chinese, they are the largest foreign holder of American debt?

  39. KReed Says:

    Email: May 19, 2011

    Mr. Perry,

I have never written a letter like this before…but I have never been more concerned and worried about the direction our county is heading in…We are truly at the crossroads of what could be the most vital turning point in our nation’s history…We are being led off a cliff by a madman that somehow became president of the greatest country on earth…A madman that no one knew anything about and still was elected to the most powerful position on the planet…only because he was always and still is protected by a bias and corrupt national media without a conscious…that only knows how to give him a pass and would never dare question who or what he really was…Now we know that this madman is a compete fraud and he is pushing our country into the abyss and to brink of no return…

I have followed your political career and I highly admire and respect you… I have seen the true qualities and the solid leadership you possess in all the great things that you have done for Texas…I know that the great state of Texas needs you…but this great country needs you more and needs you now…Our country has never been in a more dire and desperate position than it is now…Our county is slowly dying and is in a death roll of a crisis like never before…Obama is our nations greatest crisis…he is the cancer that is painfully destroying our country from within…If we do not stop Obama in 2012, our country will never be the same again…we will never recover from the fundamental changes and this nightmare that we all are being forced to live in…

I am only one voice right here and right now… but there are millions of others all around our great country that are pleading and are praying along with myself, for you to consider running for the presidency of the United States…There will never be another time like this…there has never been a more crucial time than now and there may never be another chance left for any of us if we do not stop the madness that is breaking the back of our country and bringing us to our knees…

The republican party is a mess just like everything else is in this country…We have no leaders…the party and the candidates are weak and in total disarray and will defeat itself against Obama…We need you Mr. Perry…our country desperately needs you…we need a true, strong conservative leader that has proven himself…we need a leader that can talk the talk and walk the walk and that has a great family behind him…we need someone that can lead us out of this nightmare and put us back on a path that helped make our country the greatest and strongest on earth…we need someone like you that can make our country stronger and better than ever before…or we will never be that great country again…

It is now or never…We must persevere…We must win…There is no option…

God Bless You and your family and God Bless America…

    Respectfully Submitted,

    KReed
