The American Policy Summit put on by the “Tea Party Patriots” organization was held in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend. Of the 1600 people who voted in their straw poll in person, here’s the results:
Unsurprisingly, Ron Paul won their online straw poll with 50% of the vote. His fans are a force to be reckoned with in online straw polls.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:31 pm
“His fans are a force to be reckoned with in online straw polls.”
…it is the strangest political phenomenon that I’m sure most of us have ever seen.
Probably among the most annoying too – considering many of these online polls might hold some value absent the Paulite distortion.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
“considering many of these online polls might hold some value absent the Paulite distortion.”
LOL — No online poll ever means anything.
The silliness of this poll is demonstrated by the fact that only three of the top six (Pawlenty, Palin, Romney), jointly accounting for less than a third of the total, have even a slight chance of getting the nomination.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:38 pm
Surprising showing for T-Paw!
February 27th, 2011 at 4:38 pm
The fact that Pawlenty does well among the three main factions of the GOP bodes well for his chances in the primary — and is the reason that he will be the next-in-line Republican candidate (losing out in 2012 narrowly to either Romney or Huckabee).
February 27th, 2011 at 4:40 pm
“LOL — No online poll ever means anything.”
They haven’t – at least since 2008…but an online poll is a reflection of, at least, those voting in it – pin down who is voting, and you might be able to extract some useful informaiton…
—-
But tell me, Bob – since you did not respond to me in the other threat. You discard online polls, you discard tradition, it doesn’t sound to me like you’d be all that big on traditional polls.
What are you leaving us with?
February 27th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
“and is the reason that he will be the next-in-line Republican candidate (losing out in 2012 narrowly to either Romney or Huckabee).”
I think I would agree with that – if Huckabee or Gingrich were somehow to win the nomination, Pawlenty would probably have a fairly good shot at the VP nod…no such luck with Romney, though – he needs a Southerner.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
#4 agree and disagree. Pawlenty is positioning himself as the tea party/fusionist/social con of the race. In short, he’s trying to be the W Bush to other candidates more limited appeal. He’ll be very strong in IA if Huck doesn’t run, and maybe even if he does. If no one else jumps into the race, I could see NR and WS lining up behind him.
February 27th, 2011 at 4:55 pm
Good God, Craig puts so much faith in polls, I wonder what he’ll do when he see’s this.
Someone should start a suicide watch…
February 27th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
I’ve said for over a year, T-Paw is a talented politician who appeals to all corners of the GOP, and in a field with flawed frontrunners who each turn off a lot of Republicans, T-Paw could take it all this year.
Unless Chris Christie runs….
February 27th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
Another straw? Oh, my…
Let’s compare our so-called big three to Reagan’s favorability numbers of 38% / 39% .. -1.0 at this time in 1979..
POLLSTER.COM FAVORABILITY ..as of Today
Huckabee .. 38.4% / 29.3% … +9.1
Romney .…. 35.5% / 34.8% … +0.7
Palin ….. 32.0% / 55.3% -23.3
Palin really needs to wake up and smell the coffee. She would make a good cheerleader for Republicans though.

T-Dude,
I’m quite content with Huck’s plus 9.1 at this time compared to Reagan’s minus 1 and Palin’s minus 23.3!!!
Thank you, very much
Also Mitt’s plus .7 is not bad, either. Although it has dropped quite a bit lately.

In February of 1979 Reagan had a brain.
And he hadn’t become the butt of national jokes.
February 27th, 2011 at 6:12 pm
Just to put things into perspective. Here is February 2007 GOP primary numbers:
USA Today/Gallup Poll Mar 2-4, 2007 Rudy Giuliani 44%, John McCain 20%, Newt Gingrich 9%, Mitt Romney 8%, Tommy Thompson 2%, Sam Brownback 1%, Duncan Hunter 1%, George Pataki 1%, Tom Tancredo 1%, Jim Gilmore 0%, Chuck Hagel 0%, Mike Huckabee 0%
ABC News/Washington Post Poll Feb 22-25, 2007
Rudy Giuliani 44%, John McCain 21%, Newt Gingrich 15%, Mitt Romney 4%, Mike Huckabee 2%, Tommy Thompson 2%, Sam Brownback 1%, Chuck Hagel 1%, George Pataki 1%, Ron Paul 1%, Jim Gilmore 0%, Duncan Hunter 0%, Tom Tancredo 0%
Rasmussen Reports Poll Feb 19-22, 2007
Rudy Giuliani 33%, John McCain 17%, Newt Gingrich 13%, Mitt Romney 10%, Sam Brownback 3%, Chuck Hagel 2%, Mike Huckabee 1%
February 27th, 2011 at 6:12 pm
29, see 10. Palin is no Reagan, not even close.. As a matter of fact, she’s pretty toasted.
February 27th, 2011 at 6:16 pm
Really Metro?
Were you around back then?
Because Reagan was considered an amiable dunce an B-movie actor, his greatest role co-starring with a chimp.
‘Bedtime for Bonzo’ was all the left could talk about.
The left always ridicules and tries to minimize the true conservative they fear the most.
Adults don’t fall for it, but young people might. Of course that’s why they tend to vote mostly democrat as well, they don’t think.
You are repeating a groupthink leftist meme that has no bearing in reality. Governor Palin was an exceptional Governor and held an approval rating over 90%. That doesn’t come by being an idiot.
She has the experience and values the country needs and the charisma and personality to win the election in a landslide.
Your mindless prattle will be proven false very quickly.
President Palin…get used to the idea.
You’re going to have a choice,
Palin or Obama.
February 27th, 2011 at 6:18 pm

February 27th, 2011 at 6:24 pm

You should rejoice at the prospect of her running then guys. Imagine the luck of being blessed with such weak competition!
Yet everyone is still saying she shouldn’t run…
I don’t get that.
You’d think the Mitt and Mike supporters would be pushing her to run.
February 27th, 2011 at 6:34 pm
Pawlenty’s rise was the first thing I noticed about this poll. It has a very Kerry ’04 feel to it, i.e., conservatives looking for someone who can win, but also someone who checks all the boxes. In a field consisting of Romney, Palin, Barbour, Bachmann, Cain, Paul, and Santorum, there aren’t a lot of candidates who seem both electable and conservative. A lot of folks have long been predicting that this very dynamic would ultimately lead to a grudging move towards Pawlenty on the part of GOP voters, similar to the way Kerry won the Democratic nomination.

Yeah Run Paul 2012 ! Herman Cain was my first choice when poll was not fully launched yet and Ron Paul’s name had not appeared on the the initial online list of candidates. Herman merely lacked the good Senator’s experience but I connected with his presentation none the less. IMO they were the only serious qualifiers given the choices, both are great men! In fact had other than they been the only choices , I would have to ‘write myself in’ before I’d have voted for either Pawlenty, Sarah Palin, Romney or Bachmann.

February 27th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
Yeah, we want to throw our worse candidate up against Obama. Now that would be scary for our party and a big laugher for Obama.
Again the problem is: While Reagan was a net -1 at his very worse at this time in 1979 before his big comeback versus Carter, Palin is on the other hand buried in historically dismal numbers..so low that we fear the certain loss of all three branches of government if we ran her against Obama. It’s THAT we fear because of the fact America doesn’t appreciate her divisiveness:

Well, the snark coming from the ‘establishment’ republican types is pretty thick. It’s obviously being done as a proxy, while any of the presumed candidates bend over backwards NOT to say anything offensive.
It’s a game.
She has said or done nothing to evoke Barbara Bush’s comments or Karl Rove’s or Chris Christie’s, et al, either, but that hasn’t stopped them from making their not so veiled digs.

February 27th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
Craig, you poor simpleton…there is NO One more ‘divisive’ than Barack Obama.
You’re turning into a joke, dude.
February 27th, 2011 at 10:38 pm
No. We need Palin’s poll numbers in November 2011 and December 2011. If you wouldn’t mind providing them. A Cnn poll of NH from 2008 says that
71% did not make up their mind until December 2007. Quite frankly, your information is worthless at this time. Go tell it to President Guliani.
Reagan’s problems were far worse that a -1 approval rating. Reagan went from 50% to 26%. He went from a 26 point lead to a tie. His negatives were up to 48%. Half thought he was too old. He had a 21% deficit in NH.
He now trailed Bush in Florida. As Craig Shirley put it, at that point the Reagan campaign “collapsed’.
Here are the things that were said about Reagan.
Norman Podhoretz
“I was routinely asked by friends on the right how I could possibly associate myself with this “airhead,” this B movie star, who was not only stupid but incompetent. They readily acknowledged that his political views were on the whole close to ours, but the embarrassing primitivism with which he expressed them only served, they said, to undermine their credibility. In any case, his base was so narrow that he had no chance of rescuing us from the disastrous administration of Jimmy Carter.”
Time
“Worse perhaps than the verbal gaffe is Reagan’s relentlessly simple-minded discussion of complex problems.”
“Reagan’s loose statements and flabby positions will make splendid targets for Jimmy Carter. John Sears, Reagan’s former campaign manager, was worried by that very problem during his year-and-a-half reign, and after Reagan fired him in late February, Sears complained publicly that Reagan does not have well-prepared policy positions. Frets Sears: “I’m not sure that he is now adequately briefed on matters on which politicians and the press and the people hold him to account.”
February 27th, 2011 at 10:38 pm
And what makes Governor Palin ‘divisive?’
She’s not afraid to take on Obama and his policies.
“In an age of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”
February 27th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
Compared to the insulting comments and coverage Sarah often gets, I didn’t think a comment that she could do more unscripted interviews was all that offensive. Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not, maybe it’s just a bit of unsolicited advice. I missed the clip of it. Was Christie responding to a question?
February 27th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
The thing is Governor Palin has done many ‘unscripted’ interviews.
Christie said this in the form of ‘friendly’ advice, always accompanied with a little chuckle, to help the poor simple woman. Pure snark, implying she just isn’t ready for the world of the big boys.
I can’t wait for the debates. She is the only Republican that has to put up with pot shots from her own side. Which reinforces my belief, they fear her.
If she were as easy as they keep implying, they wouldn’t mention her name…kinda like Mike Huckabee.

Craig for Huck,
Question for you about your guy.
Do you think Huckabee’s TV show and the money he is paid at Fox have any negative effect on his popularity? I haven’t seen any indication that they have but he carefully cultivated the image in 2008 of himself as the common man. He was the ‘little guy’. He was like you and me. He was far from rich and as he famously quipped, he reminded folks of the guy they work with and not the one that lays them off. That last line was an obvious jab on Romney. I think that message resonated with many voters.
Fast forward to 2012 when Huck himself lives in a mansion by the sea and is easily now a multi-millionaire, has he lost his most valuable asset? Has he ceded the common-man persona to say, Tim Pawlenty. Pawlenty comes from humble origins and although he’s served as a governor, he seems closer to his roots than Huckabee who is now a highly paid media star.
As I said, I haven’t seen any evidence that he has lost support because of his rising income and fame but in 2008, he played David to Romney’s Goliath. Romney was the rich guy who had it all and Huckabee was the common man running for President on a shoestring budget, with no entourage, and staying at Motel6.
I just wonder if Huckabee supporters feel less emotionally connected to him now and if that might have any impact on the race. I think Romney’s supporters tend to not feel an emotional connection to Mitt but rather it is more intellectual. They think he is highly competent and qualified but they don’t necessarily personally connect with him. Huckabee is the opposite and part of the connection is based on the notion that he is an everyday guy. Losing that commodity could be detrimental to his appeal so does he risk losing it or has he already lost any of it?
I’d be interested in your thoughts.

What is that, irony…a Huckabee supporter calling Palin supports rubes? LOL. That is rich!
Well good.
They ought to be afraid because we are legion.
February 27th, 2011 at 11:19 pm
Metro,
Every time I see you here, you insult people
and call them names.
Teledude is not rube,he’s very eloquent and
sharp,and you can’t debate him.You resort to
the only thing you can;insult and call him names.
You are too limited, just plain dumb ace hall.
February 27th, 2011 at 11:21 pm
The point is that she has done unscripted question and answer sessions and she gets no credit for it. Is Christie deliberately ignoring it? What she did in Long Island seems to be a good format for her and she would be wise to maybe do more of them with ordinary people rather media.
As to polls, let’s take a look at one. The CBS poll conducted Jan 11-15 has her negatives at 58%. This poll was taken a few days after the Tucson shooting even as CBS was bashing Palin with phony charges that she was responsible. Also talk show hosts have 60% disapproval which supports the fact that this poll was influenced by the incident. Also the partisan breakdown is 38% independent, 34% democrat and 27% Republican. Rasmussen has a partisan rating of 35.4% republican, 35% democrat and 29.6% independent.

“As I said, I haven’t seen any evidence that he has lost support because of his rising income and fame”
===
Ci2Eye,
And you won’t. Because we all believe in the American Dream, you will only see his numbers rise and rise.. As a matter of fact, the recent poll showed they shared equally amongst folks making over 90K. Look, I live on the ocean 90 minutes up the coast from Mitt’s place in La Jolla. As I do, I’m sure Mike and Mitt also about equally believe in working as hard as they can to reach their goals. 20 hour days every day, multiple jobs and/or multiple businesses = nicer home.
Americans love that! Voters love that!
Did you think Romney had a monopoly on the most successful and intelligent folks?
McCain and Huckabee disproved that nonsense in ’08 and Mike again in the polls now.
February 27th, 2011 at 11:37 pm
Craig,
I’m still wating.
1)How many books?It’s been over a week.
2)Is Granny T OK?She’s not frozen with
thousand people waiting in line in Dubuque IO?
February 27th, 2011 at 11:37 pm
TEX,
Go over to Huck’s Army if you want to talk to Granny T. She’s very nice and won’t bite you. She and others are currently in Iowa posting from the road about their various journeys to greet Mike, with links to photos as well.
Just do me a favor and don’t call those nice ladies or their candidate at H.A. crude and mean names (like you do here daily) just because they support Huckabee. Ok?
February 27th, 2011 at 11:39 pm
So it’s not only Christie that is offending her and her supporters with comments that she needs to give more unscripted interviews, the other candidates are in on it too?
Just some friendly advice–that’s bordering on conspiracy theory. I guess if you look hard enough, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Reject the advice at face value if you feel the need, but dragging other candidates in just reinforces the perception that some Palin supporters are crying victim too much.
February 27th, 2011 at 11:41 pm
Tex,
I already told you that I will get the official numbers next week when the Huck’s book goes to #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list. Please be patient. Have another drink and relax, partner.
Are you still coming to Iowa if Sarah runs to campaign for her?
February 27th, 2011 at 11:46 pm
Thanks for the comments.
I’ve never quite understood why some in our society look down on success, particularly in the arena of politics. As you said, the American Dream is exemplified in Huckabee’s life and, to a lesser degree, Romney’s life. I would say Romney’s father started life where Huckabee did and was very successful so Mitt grew up with more money than Mike did. But, Romney’s current wealth came from hard work and dilligence rather than inheritence. The same can now be said for Huckabee. He has taken his good natured personality and wit and capitalized on it and now has a top rated TV show and an ever increasing bank account.
I am happy to see him succeed. I just wonder if perhaps the blue collar worker who saw Huckabee as their peer might now feel less connected to the new Huckabee who is a TV host from New York City. In 2008, I heard many snide remarks about Romney’s wealth and McCain incurred considerable political damage when he didn’t seem to know how many homes he owned and suddenly appeared to be “too rich” to connect with voters so Huckabee’s newfound wealth could prove harmful or perhaps have no negative effect at all.
February 27th, 2011 at 11:53 pm
I’m not too sure how Americans feel about guys who divorce their “poor” wifes to marry heiresses who owns 15 homes.
LOL! That could have hurt McCain and Kerry a tiny bit. Who knows?

It’s moments like these, that i wonder what might have become of Chuck Hagel…had 9/11 never happened? I mean, the guy was regarded as a rising star, and was short listed as Bush’s VP. There was even talk of him replacing Cheney on the ticket in 04′. But of course it was just talk. What would have happened had Ron Paul not run….would chuck hagel have run as the anti-war candidate?
P.S. I used to love Chuck. He even hinted that i should come be a part of his staff(I was about 19 at the time). But knowing what i know now….i’m glad i ended my love affair with Chuck Hagel.

PALIN Will Draw a Contrast With Obama in Her Visit Next Month to India
By PRANAY GUPTE,
Sarah Palin’s choice of an international venue to deliver an address on “My Vision of America” is canny. She will speak in March before India’s business, political, diplomatic, academic and media elite at the annual India Today Conclave. The gathering arguably possesses the biggest private-sector megaphone in the world’s largest democracy.
Mrs. Palin’s choice is also shrewd because her visit to India will come barely three months after a celebrated one by President Obama. Her appearance is certain to elicit comparisons, however superficial.
Nevertheless, Mrs. Palin’s India journey is an important one. For one, Indians would like to hear a clearly defined sense of America’s political and economic trajectory.
Mrs. Palin will get to see first hand how the politics of the Subcontinent work. She may even want to make an unscheduled stop in Pakistan, which wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
But it is in India that Mrs. Palin is certain to be well received; there will be quite of bit of curiosity, too, since she will be a newcomer — although not a new face media-wise — for Indians.
The other reason that Mrs. Palin will be warmly received is that Indians like women leaders. After all, the country’s most powerful politician is Sonia Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress; the INC is the lead party in the coalition that rules India.
The India trip will deepen Mrs. Palin’s geopolitical education about South Asia, a region of enormous possibilities for stronger ties with America. While her visit may be short, she will be meeting the drivers of economic change in a country that once was moribund on account of misguided Fabian socialist policies that spawned a sprawling and corrupt bureaucracy. She will also experience for herself the colors and clangor of India, an ancient land that is rapidly becoming a hyper modern nation who GDP may equal that of America in the next 50 years.
And given her personality, Mrs. Palin most definitely will make friends in India, which has already begun souring on President Obama for his perceived failure to follow through on promises made on his state visit. Happily, Mrs. Palin will be a political tourist; she will have no obligation to make any pledges, other than of accelerating her personal friendships in a land known for its warmth and hospitality.

Is it too much to expect the truth from a politician? Palin has done exactly what Christie has suggested. Yet Christie is either stupid or willfully ignorant.
February 28th, 2011 at 2:16 am
Christy is a fat slob RINO.
One pony show.
He yelled at teacher, edited and made 30 seconds
commercial and pushed(pimped)it on YouTube.
He’s for cap ‘n tax(trade) liberal scheme.
He’s for Obamacare.
He’s for Ground Zero mosque.
He put a known Islamist Sohail Mohammed, friend of Jihadists
to the N.J. Supreme Court.
He’s against 2nd amendment.
Etc…etc….etc….
The guy is a liberal RINO.

Amazing how Tim Pawlenty can go from saying “The era of small government is over; government needs to be more proactive,” to being a “Tea Party favorite” in a year.

Sarah Palin is going next month to New Delhi,India,
to deliver speech “My Vision Of America”.
Romney,Huckabee,T-Paw,Daniels,Barbour and the rest
of the dwarfs were invited but they all turned it down.
So,India had no choice but to invite “unelectable”,
“divisive”, according to the Libs and RINOS,Sarah Palin
aka Sarahcuda.
India is “cooking” with bombastic adds, commentaries and
analysis about Governor Palin appearance in their Capital
New Delhi,in front of movers, shakers and elite of India.
