The Hot Stove Polls

There’ve been a flurry of Public Policy Presidential polling as well as the latest CNN poll. What does it all mean?

The PPP state polls have been all over in the place in regards to the 2012 Presidential campaign with wild shifts occurring without explanation.

There are two possible reason for this. First, Public Policy Polling may just have some lousy sampling method. I could buy that as being part of the problem, but the consistent inconsitency of the polls makes me doubt that as the full answer. The second solution is that most 2 years before the election, most normal voters haven’t focused enough on a potential Presidential primary race to make an actual decision as to who to support. I think there are probably quite a few people who win pressed by a pollster for a Presidential choice, may give different answers at different times.  A reminder of how different the average voter is from the average political junkie.

What about the CNN poll? CNN didn’t measure who voters would prefer but who the party members would be likely to support. It’s worth noting that CNN ran an almost identical poll two years ago. The difference in results is remarkable:

Candidate 2008% 2010% Difference
Huckabee 65% 67% +2%
Romney 61% 59% -2%
Gingrich 52% 54% +2%
Palin 67% 49% -18%

Huckabee, Romney, and Gingrich all saw their numbers move, but the movement was within the margin of error. Sarah Palin has had a precipitous and dramatic fall in the number of Republicans who’ll commit to supporting her if she’s the party nominee. This poll is another sign that Palin would be ill-advised to run for President.  I’m more than happy to entertain the idea that a single poll is biased. However, poll after poll shows the same thing, it begins to look a lot like evidence.

Palin has huge unfavorables in nearly every recent poll.  While we can argue all day about what caused the damage. It has been done and it’s not going to be reversed easily and certainly not in time for Palin to win in 2012.

    Bingo!

  2. Texas Conservative Says:

The question will be, who does Palin listen to for advise on an upcoming presidential run?

Does she listen to say, Bill Kristol, who was one of the first to toot her horn, but who has recently said she did not go back to Alaska and bone up on policy? Or does she listen to say, C4P, who just designed a new website especially for a presidential run?

  3. Dave Gaultier Says:

Adam may very well be right that Palin is hopeless as far as turning her numbers around are concerned, but I agree that Bill Kristol is not her friend. She should run as more of a Ron Paul type, especially since that’s what she seems to actually be.

  4. Craig Says:

Could she get Ron Paul to endorse her early on? And would that move her extremely poor favorables up or down further? Or she pretty much on her own now as a fringe national candidate? Like Paul.

  5. Jonathan Says:

At this point, Palin really can’t run for President . Like you’ve said Adam, her numbers are just atrocious, and an poor run for President would ruin what influence Palin has within the Party.

Dave, Kristol was a very early Palinista, but I think by acting more reality-star than would-be President, she alienated him.

  6. TEX Says:

    Adam,

Your whole premise is faulty to begin with.

You are talking about national polls two
    years before national election.
Ask Presidents Giuliani and Hillary how important
    those polls are.

In the last month and a half PPP conducted
    29 state polls.

Sarah Palin won 12 and came 2nd 9 times,
go at hucksarmy.com and check for yourself.
    21 out of 29 polls.

If you’re not impressed by these numbers,
than IMO you are trying very hard not to
    be impressed.

And these are polls that matter, state polls.
She beats Huckabee,Romney is distant third
and Newt is left in the dust.

    Adam,first things FIRST! THE NOMINATION!
Once Sarah is our nominee than the stand for
nothing RINOS will have a choice:
    Palin or Obama.

  7. Aron Goldman Says:

Bill Kristol dismisses Sarah Palin in 2012, but encourages Chris Christie

  8. TEX Says:

Kristol is a Lib on most issues,
    but because he’s a neocon,he pretends
    to be conservative.

No,there are plenty of RINOS for him
    to choose from.

He hoped that neocons would be able to
    make Palin a neocon.Stupid idea.

Sarah is American patriot and nationalist,
but not a loony neocon like Kristol,Frump…..

    #6:

Tex, I understand national polls this far out have a lot of limitations, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be suggestive and what the polls suggest is that Sarah Palin has a personal popularity crisis.

While you’re right with President Giuliani and President Hillary is kind of an apples to oranges situation. In the case of Giuliani and Hillary, their problem was the “X” factor. Most Republicans didn’t know a heck of a lot about Rudy Giuliani. They knew him as the Mayor from 9/11, but didn’t know his views on abortion, or the downsides of Rudy.

With Hillary, there was always a sense of Clinton fatigue, however Obama was simply not known and hadn’t been introduced. So, as voters learned more about Guiliani on the GOP side, he fell. And as voters got introduced to Obamamania, Hillary fell.

Palin’s problem is that she is a known factor that voters have opinions about.

    Yes,conservatives,true conservatives,admire and
    love her.
They, and not finger in the wind moderates, will
decide who is our next nominee.

Why do you think Romney look better in national
polls than Sarah but is doing very poorly in state
polls, the only polls that matter before the nomination.

At the same time she’s beating Huck, killing Romney and
    Newt is far,far behind.

    TEX,

In your crazy counting system that does not take into account MOE, I recounted twice and came up with..

Huck in 1st or 2nd in 19 of last 29 separate polls listed at HA. Same as you claim for Palin.

Plus FL & NC from yesterday are not included in the HA chart that you’re using, but is in the brand new one HERE: http://forum.hucksarmy.com/download/file.php?id=1393 to bring Huck to 20 of 31 (of either 1st & 2nd).

But back to Adam’s national polling topic where the “Wonderful Invincible Sarahcuda” gets slaughtered repeatedly in head to head versus President Obama. And that matters.

Also the fact that she loses to Huck in all three Iowa polls this year:

    27 to 17
    21 to 12
    22 to 11

She cannot rebound from about a 10 point loss in Iowa, imo. Ask Romney.

  12. Craig Says:

I counted 20 of 29 for Palin and checked it twice so she wins!!! ;)

  13. TEX Says:

    Adam,

You think I’m making it up,if I tell you
that there is concerted efforts by many,
Libs,LSM,GOP establishment, an army of Bushie
hacks and lap-dogs etc. to slow down and stop
Sarah Palin from getting the nomination?

At the same time,Romney,Huck,Newt and all of
the rest are getting free ride.

Well, once the primaries start and all of them
get under scrutiny, then Adam I will come back
and ask you:”What do you think now?”

  14. Craig Says:

I think Huck will get the backing from the powers that be in the Republican Party to take Palin out decisively in Iowa ’08 should she choose to run with these dismal versus Obama numbers.

But I have no prove yet. Just a feeling. A good feeling. ;)

  15. Craig Says:

    I mean Iowa ’12. ;)

  16. TEX Says:

  20. Craig Says:

Or what will happen if Palin is still down by about 12-15 points or more to Obama come Summer?

Will you switch candidates then or wait till after Iowa’s caucus?

  21. TEX Says:

Palin can’t win. I think at least that much we can all agree on. The interesting thing now is that her numbers are so bad that she’s very unlikely to even run. Which means say hello to a Huck run after all!

Let’s keep a tally in 2011 and watch Huck catch up (those measly two behind) and pass Sarah easily by early 2011. Ok? :)

Meanwhile, we all agree that Palin is LAST and unelectable versus Obama for now.

You think that fact will completely change, I (and all who are sane) don’t.

  29. Craig Says:

Or 20 for Huck, I meant to type which includes Huck’s 1st Florida yesterday. AND 22 for your gal, since you’re counting NC from yesterday.

    Sarah 22
    Huck 20

    Are we up to date?

Let the PPP race (phase two) begin through 2011 to early 2012…

In fact she is doing a lot better than your guy did the last time around.

  33. jerseyrepublican Says:

OJ, don’t eve waste your time with Craig, he would bad mouth his own mother if she were running against Huckabee. In fact, I’m beginning to think one of three things about The Craigs… which one could be true?

    1. He is not a Republican at all and he just comes to this site to cause trouble amongst the grassroot supporters of the Republican candidates?

    2. He is one of the site administrators trying to drum up discussion to get more hits on their flailing website?

    3. He is Mike Huckabee?

  34. OHIO JOE Says:

Haha Jersey, I do not actually think he is Mr. Huckabee himself, but your first two options sound reasonable. Lately, he (or she) has gone crazier than bed-bugs.

  35. TEX Says:

phony numbers he’s pushing on this site.

    I really don’t care that much,I’m probably
the only one reading his (most of the time)
    nonesense.

  37. Granny T Says:

I don’t like to see all the bickering going on among the GOP supporters. How can we expect to win the war if we fire so much ammunition against our own soldiers? It seems that no matter who wins a poll that supporters of a different candidate starts firing off negative ammo against the poll winner. Why can’t we point out the best qualities of each candidate instead of pointing out the worst qualities of the opposing candidates? Is it because there aren’t enough good qualities to point out?

I will point out something good I’ve seen in the recent polls. They show that Huckabee has overcome the “unelectable” and “regional candidate” labels that were put on him last time. He has won polls (or come within the MOE) in states in the midwest (including tying with Mitt in his “home” state of Michigan). He also beat Palin in her northwestern home state (although within MOE) and won a northeastern state (Pennsylvania) by 7 points over tied for 2nd place, Romney and Palin.

If all four of the top tier candidates get into the race – it will not be an easy race for any of them.

and admire The de facto conservative leader
    of America Sarahcuda Palin.

  39. CraigS Says:

    Good morning…
Do any of you believe that there is a relationship between media visibility and political polling results ? On a scale of 1 to 10, who has had the most media visibility in the last 3 months ? Given Huckabee’s esposure on Fox News , real and re -runs, Palins almost non- stop ” guesting ” on Fox, interviews, back packing, hunting fishing, et al and Gingrich’s ” eminence grise “, Cardinal Richelieu presence on FNS, should’nt any look for an uptick in favorability and a down tick in unfavorability ?
Huckabee has certainly benefited from his visibility as the kind of shlocky, uber – mediocre, bandmeister and part – time sage.
Gingrich has had a wash, not really up or down. Probably over the top of most voters
Palin is getting creamed by voters. Many GOP conservatives may love her, but she is becoming a political albatross to the GOP and the one sure 2012 loser Barack could face
    On the other hand……
Romney has purposefully stayed under everybody’s radar. The fact that his polling has only modestly changed is testament to the savvy run -up to the full 2011 2012 campaign.
Remember, there is a difference between a poll in a state with 3-4 candidates and a poll in the same state with 10-12 candidates.

Finally, what do you all think of the pending conservative primary dilemma with Palin, Huckabee and Herman Cain all running at the same time ? How many ways does this vote get split in, say, Iowa ?

The only nuts on this site is you.
You never, ever stop your deceitful garbage.

Only two days ago Sarah Palin WON N. Carolina,
it’s right there under Florida at huckarmy.com

Why you didn’t put it in your phony, crappy chart?

    Man,you have no shame!!!

    YES,once again I REFUDIATED your phony,lying,

You are not honest commentator, what do you hope
    to achieve by being deceitful?

  62. Granny T Says:

    Tex,
I never said that “Sarah Palin wants everybody to be fat.” Obesity has been linked to various health problems. So, I admire Palin, Huckabee, and Michelle Obama for admitting there is a problem with obesity and trying to do something about it.

Palin didn’t have to mention Michelle at all when making the smores. She made a comment that stirred up trouble…being divisive about something that while Governor she had already admitted needing to be worked.

Like it or not, the government (both state and federal levels) use our tax dollars for school lunches (and in some areas breakfast, too). Offering healthy foods instead of junk foods for those meals should make sense to everyone.

America is a country that includes Conservatives, Liberals, and Moderates. The GOP will not be able to help heal the country if all we do is knock down every idea the Democrats have instead of trying to work together with them when possible. Huckabee has said numerous times that we ought to find something we agree with and start working from there. Palin needs to learn that if she wants to improve her favorability instead of losing it – like the results of this poll show she has been doing.

  69. TEX Says:

    Granny T,

    It’s very simple.
Sarah Palin is true Reaganesqe conservative.
She wants government to get the hell off our backs.

“Government is not the solution.Government is the
    problem”. – Ronald Reagan

Socialists Obamas,Huckabee and all the Libs and most
of the squishy RINOS believe in Nanny state “government
knows best”,they believe in “no labels”,
“reach across the isle”(appease the Libs)etc,etc…..

Sarah Palin is opposite of all of that.
This is why she’s admired and loved by conservatives
in both parties, this is why Sarah Palin is THE leader
    of conservatives in America.

Are you sure she “does not need to learn anything” about improving her favorables? Did you see the PPP blog from yesterday? “For Palin there’s no place like home…in a bad way” http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2010/12/for-palin-theres-no-place-like-homein.html

    Brief quote from the article:
Palin’s unpopularity in Alaska is an interesting sidebar but ultimately pretty irrelevant to a possible 2012 Presidential bid. What’s more relevant is that a majority of voters in every single state we have polled so far on the 2012 race has an unfavorable opinion of her.

As I said before, she needs to learn how to improve her favorables if she wants any chance at all to win. One of the main reasons Huckabee couldn’t get more people on board during the 2008 primaries is because they thought he was unelectable. Sarah has to do something so she doesn’t get that “unelectable” label that is so hard to overcome.

Very good post. One of Huckabee’s primary failings in 2008, I think, was the perception that he was the “Evangelical Candidate” and not much more than that. He fialed to expand his base and was thus marginalized. Palin appears to have a similar problem. She gets betweeen about an average of 13%-20% in every state, but not anything more than that. She has a Tea Party base, but little appeal outside of it.

How do you like my new chart now, where I’ve listed each state ONCE since the latest 11/9/10 to the present? I show the PPP polling with everyone’s numbers including T-paw first in Minnesota. Matt and the other T-Paw fans should like that.

And was pleased to see that Huck remains either in 1st or within the margin of error of first the most times.

I’ve noticed from Brett’s post at Huck’s Army and the numerous comments here that there are a lot of states with ties when you figure in MOE. That tells me there is no clear frontrunner no matter what anyone seems to think.

  100. Heath Says:

    100!

Did you hear COD is being investigated by the Feds! Sarah sure knows how to pick em!

  101. OHIO JOE Says:

“Did you hear COD is being investigated by the Feds! Sarah sure knows how to pick em!” And who was the other candidate in the race?

  102. Heath Says:

Mike Castle – who would have been Senator Castle!

  103. OHIO JOE Says:

Even if he won, he would have voted with the Dems most of the time. No thanks to cap and tax.

  104. Ray Brun Says:

    OJ-
really? all you can talk about is cap and tax? because that is really going to make it through the Boehner House in the next 2 years. He would have voted with us on the things that will actually matter over the next 6 years but I know you have a candidate to worship so of course COD is just the victim of some LameStream/RINO/Liberal/WH conspiracy involving the FBI and FEC.

  105. OHIO JOE Says:

Ray Burn, Cap and tax was the clincher, he was to the end a liberal (not a moderate.) The fact that he lost was a valuable lesson to the party establishment. It is a chance for the Maine girl and Mr. Brown to pull up their sock. You can either from your comeupins and grow up or you can continue to cry and blame Miss O’Donnell for the lesson you still failed to learn. You like to talk about how important it is to beat Mr. Obama, but this is no way to beat him. If Republicans in the Blue state of Deleware were willing to vote for an imperfect candidate to get rid of Mr. Castle, you better think long and hard before you pull this stunt again. Hey, you decide if you want to roll the dice and divide the party to give us another 4 years of Mr. Obama. We await your answer.

And as for “so of course COD is just the victim of some LameStream/RINO/Liberal/WH conspiracy involving the FBI and FEC.” Those are your words, not mine.

CAL THOMAS: SARAH PALIN DESERVES AN APOLOGY
    Stacy Drake

Cal Thomas wrote a piece at Townhall.com on the recent revelation by the New Times that new “health care” will include the “end-of-life” provisions after all. He writes:

“Sarah Palin deserves an apology. When she said that the new health-care law would lead to “death panels” deciding who gets life-saving treatment and who does not, she was roundly denounced and ridiculed.

Now we learn, courtesy of one of the ridiculers — The New York Times — that she was right.

Under a new policy not included in the law for fear the administration’s real end-of-life game would be exposed, a rule issued by the recess-appointed Dr. Donald M. Berwick, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services,
calls for the government to pay doctors to advise patients on options for ending their lives. These could include directives to forgo aggressive treatment that could extend their lives”.

Sarahcuda told us so,like many other things.

” divide the party to give us another 4 years of Mr. Obama.”

    ===
The only ones talking about dividing the party are the nuts over at C4P and Malkin’s Hot Air (aptly named) who continuously shout that they’re never voting for Mike or Mitt if one of those two go on to earn OUR nomination.

“No Reagan Big Tent Party for them” is their motto as Sarah and her hardcore groupies attempt to bust up the party. Meanwhile President Obama sits back, relaxes, and amusingly observes Palin & her Palinites on their suicide mission to rid the Republicans of every one of the called “RINOs” (dumbest acronym on the planet) or who they judge not to be in lockstep with every one of Sarah’s precious little tweets.

  108. Craig Says:

As Palin’s favorables sink even further into the dumpster…

33% approval TODAY in her home state of Alaska.

‘Splain that! The folks who know her the best are on to her?

Compare that to Huckabee whose favorabilities are now somewhere in the 60′s (and higher) in Arkansas (where they know him best).

  109. TEX Says:

    Craig,

I learned about Huckashmuck’s and your political
identity in the last two weeks, than all this time
    since I visited this site.

You,Shmuckabee and the rest of RINOS don’t like to
be called RINOS,the only appropriate name.

Liberals are also running scared from the only name
you should and could call them,Liberals.

Why are you guys running away from your proper names?

Chuckey Krouthammer, the “great” intellect, also the great
speech writer for liberal, left loony W. Mondale, when
Sarah Palin forced the White House to change Obamacare,
he told us that Sarah Palin should leave the room during
    Health Care- Obamacare discussion.

    Why Chuckey?

So White House Chicago thugs and RINOS can agree on Obamacare?
This is the same phony conservative who just few days ago
said that Republican Congress should not defund Obamacare.

    No way mr Kraphummer!

New PPP tally as we enter 2011….

    numbers and more numbers…

Numbers change, there is more than a long, long year,
    eternity in politics,before primaries.

In order to expose your phony numbers,I did post
    correct numbers.

Other than that,I never do it,it’s boooooring even

But back to Adam’s national polling topic where the “Wonderful Invincible Sarahcuda” gets slaughtered repeatedly in head to head versus President Obama. And that matters.

Also the fact that she loses to Huck in all three Iowa polls this year:

    27 to 17
    21 to 12
    22 to 11

She cannot rebound from about a 10 point loss in Iowa, imo. Ask Romney.

  116. Heath Says:

Death Panels. Lol – thanks for reminding us all about the lie that was voted the biggest lie of 2009!

    Heath,

This is the first and the very last time
I’m wasting my time addressing a liberal
troll on this site, which is supposed to be
    conservative blog.

Stay at Daily Kooks or several other Libtard
sites, mingle with your own,you are repeating
    their talking points.

But hey, among so many RINOS maybe you feel
    right at home.

You are way out of line regarding Heath and also for repeatedly calling everyone a RINO here at Race42012 who doesn’t bow down and kiss Palin’s feet like you and the other Kowtow4Palin.com folks do.

Are you trying to get banned from this site, too?

  121. Craig Says:

To update & sum up the recent end of the year polls now with each MOE double checked at the sources…
