Before we conservatives could finish celebrating the most historic Senate victory of our lifetimes, we had to listen to Glenn Beck rip into the Senator-elect for his 1982 Cosmopolitan photo shoot and for his teasing ‘available’ comments about his daughters in his victory speech. As soon as I heard Scott Brown playfully tease his beloved daughters, I knew the left would try to twist it into an attack, a fear quickly confirmed on MSNBC by Rachel Maddow. I expected that, but I never dreamed that after one of the greatest conservative nights in history that a so-called conservative would join in on these ridiculous attacks, as Glenn Beck did today….twice.

This, in my opinion, is the last straw for this no-talent scrub, this drunken idiot, this smearing hack. Conservatives defended Beck at every turn, during each of his many missteps. It’s a shame he couldn’t offer that same support to Scott Brown.
‘The Great One’ Mark Levin put the blubbering Beck in his place today:
You know, the really ignorant thing about criticizing Brown is that in kidding around with his girls, it actually shows he is a good family man. Ask any guy who is a father of girls: doing something deliberately to provoke the “oh daddy!” squirm of embarrassment from the teenage daughters is something only a father with a good, comfortable relationship does (and he never misses a chance to do so).
If smearing Brown was a joke, I don’t think it was very funny. It’s very weird.
Exactly. Senator Brown’s joke shows just how good of a father he really is and how close his relationship with his family is. Not only does he seem to be a great family man, but he has also proven to be a great politician, and that is what I think is truly worrying Glenn Beck. Beck sees 2010 as his year to shine, and how dare Scott Brown take away any of his spotlight. Brown shows how our party can be both conservative and a big tent, instead of Beck’s twisted third party vision. Beck sees the Tea Party growing beyond his ability to shape and control, and that is what is driving his moronic attacks on the new Massachusetts Senator, who just so happens to be a 30 year veteran of the Army National Guard, service Beck would know nothing about.
But since Gl
enn wants to talk about fathers and daughters and stand on his soap box and preach, then I’m afraid it’s time to knock him off that box. Beck is the LAST person who should be giving any father anywhere grief on how they treat their children. Perhaps he is jealous of Brown’s relationship with his daughters, because while Beck’s daughters Hannah and Mary (who has cerebral palsy) were growing up he was far too drunk and drug addicted to joke with them the way Scott is able to do with his children. A drug addict and an alcoholic first, a father second was the story of Glenn Beck’s life; it’s who he was as his daughters grew up and it’s who he was when his first wife left him. However, despite his pathetic weakness for alcohol and drugs, conservatives everywhere forgave him and accepted him after he turned his life around. You would think a man who was so embraced and forgiven would be able to forgive someone else for a change, at the very least for a photo shoot from 28 years ago that was used to pay for college. Sarah Palin participated in a beauty pageant to pay for school; Scott Brown posed in a magazine for the same reason. Life’s tough and sometimes you do what you have to do to make ends meet, rather then giving up and surrendering to your addictions like a coward.
So I and conservatives everywhere call on Glenn Beck to apologize to Senator-elect Scott Brown and his family. We expect this kind of behavior from Olbermann, but we expect better from you. Shape up or ship out.

Mr. Twain,
Ed Morrissey rips Beck almost as badly as you do at Hot Air. I agree with you, especially his comment about “dead intern.”
January 20th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Never found Beck either engaging or entertaining.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Beck is absolutely certifiable.
That joke was definitely a little on the wild side but still completely acceptable, especially for a popular politician like Brown, because it was a joke, and not even an offensive one at all.
Of course, Beck also thinks McCain and Graham are progressives, so he’s already gone to his own little world a long time ago.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
Reverse psychology folks.
Beck rips Brown — independents think, “Hey Senator Brown is probably a moderate”.
Beck should always play this role.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
What’s the over/under on the number of weeks before both Beck and Levin are calling Brown a RINO?
January 20th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Wise,
And then praise the people he hates?
January 20th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
Max, you have become one of my favorite writers here and absolutely agree with you. My favorite line…
“This, in my opinion, is the last straw for this no-talent scrub, this drunken idiot, this smearing hack.”
I watched his show the other day, and it was chocked full of gross inaccuracies and exaggerations. He truly is the misinformer of the year. Conservatives need to give responsible critiques of the Obama administration, not idiotic populism. He is threat to the conservative movement.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
Glenn Beck was an alcoholic and drug addict?
Why does that never come up on his show?
January 20th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Beck talks about his addiction problems all the time on his show. He talked about it today. You people should really watch his show once in awhile.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
This was ridiculous. I figured Beck would be upset about Brown thanking McCain last night… Oh well. What a dumb way to try to rain on everyone’s parade.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:32 pm
That was Beck ‘acting stupidly, Rush said some ridiculous things today too, trying to be a little
outrageous. Beck has never denied his faults, he’s been significant in unraveling part of the agenda,
January 20th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Beck is loco.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:40 pm
its a big tent party, so beck should be a part of it- but at the back of the pack, not as a leader.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Lucky,
I’ve listened to his show quite often on my short commute to work, and occasionally for longer periods over the past couple years.
Maybe it’s just that I find so little of what he says memorable- just a vague impression of obnoxious sarcasm and puerile humor.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:43 pm
He admitted being an alcoholic just today, and many other times.
Beck is best when he sticks to his investigations of ACORN and Obama’s cabinet member backgrounds and associations. After that, not much….
January 20th, 2010 at 9:45 pm
So back to Max’s point; if Beck is sooooo in tune with his own story of redemption, why can’t he cut Brown some slack about a 28 year old photo?
January 20th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
First off – Beck’s comments were over the line – big time.
However, bringing up his past as a weapon is rather disengenous. Beck got relligion and that pulled him out of drugs and alcohol (which he ha mentioned numerous times on his show). The fact that he was there is exactly WHY he overreacted.
So – criticize the comment but do it with some integrity and honesty.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
16 – Again, not defending what Beck said, but we’re talking apples and oranges. Has Brown ever said he regretted the Cosmo photos? If it’s not “repented” then how can it be redemptive.
Personally I don’t care and Ayla Browns reaction to the reark (hug daddy) should be all the proof we need that it was okay.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:49 pm
Adam,
“The fact that he was there is exactly WHY he overreacted.”
Not sure I understand you there. Are you saying that Beck is unforgiving of Brown’s youthful indiscretion because he has turned away from his own failings?
That doesn’t make sense.
January 20th, 2010 at 9:51 pm
Adam,
“Has Brown ever said he regretted the Cosmo photos? ”
I don’t know. I’m guessing if he hasn’t, it’s because he didn’t want to make it even more of an issue during the campaign.
Do you think he’s proud he did the photo?
January 20th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Adam,
And bringing up Beck’s past is at least somewhat relevant here. To the extent he wants to bludgeon Brown for his past mistakes, I reckon it’s open season for hypocrisy hunters.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
WHO CARES if he posed nude for Cosmo? Sheesh.
Let libs be jealous that our rising stars actually look good naked.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:06 pm
Beck attacking Brown may actually be ideal, for Brown.
It’d be like George W Bush coming out all of a sudden on Fox News and saying what a failure Obama is. Obama would have to send him the biggest “thank you” card in existence
January 20th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
Hmmm….It was dumb, but it was also pre-meditated. Beck tends to think a few steps ahead of the game. I think he did it on purpose to strengthen his appeal as a contrarian. You know someone who is not a blind, fall of the cliff Republican. It was the perfect day to do it. The conservatives are in euphoria and the new cycle is dominating. Beck would get the least amount of heat from “criticizing a conservative” by doing it today.
Watch this, when Beck needs to win the “Oh, you just are blind loving Republican”, he will pull out this clip. Smart tactic, but a tactic nonetheless.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
Well, I wouldn’t view Beck as a policy expert, or relationship expert, but I love how he actually does investigative reporting, and I like listening to his take on our country’s founding.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
we are a party of faith, moral values, etc….getting naked for a magazine is HARDLY setting a good example for those things.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:35 pm
I actually agree that the daughter pimping comments were extremely squirm inducing, so I was about to cut Beck some slack till I heard this comment dismissing talk of Brown running for President:
“Can we actually have him accomplish something first”
Can’t disagree with that on its own terms, but isn’t Beck one of Palin’s cheerleaders?
January 20th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
I don’t know, I used to think so, but I think he’s been disappointed in her performance or something – he told BO’R that he didn’t know if she was prez. material.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
#24… Or maybe Beck realizes that if these sort of election results keep up, there won’t be much reason for folks to watch his show.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
I don’t understand how Beck is a “so-called conservative” just because he “attacks” Brown. I’m amused that Brown is suddenly the darling of the conservative mov’t when Brown, in fact, isn’t a conservative.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
I agree, Brown is obviously an insidious PROGRESSIVE!!1
January 20th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
I was listening to Beck this morning, and he did say (after an hour or so) that the whole segment was comedy, and that he really wasn’t all that upset with Brown.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:25 pm
WSU,
As long as Brown doesn’t preach about those things, he’s okay. He looks like a pretty good guy overall, and everyone can have youthful indiscretions. We can’t hold that against Brown.
Now if he went and posed for them tomorrow, yes, that would be bad and worthy of outrage.
And as to Brown vs. Beck,
When given the choice between archconservative purist Beck and moderate-to-conservative “the people’s Senator” Brown, I think most conservatives take the latter
January 20th, 2010 at 11:25 pm
we are a party of faith, moral values, etc….getting naked for a magazine is HARDLY setting a good example for those things.
Oh God.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:32 pm
I can’t wait for the freakouts that are going to take place when the sexting generation starts running for political office.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:35 pm
Glenn Beck is good for investgative reporting of ACORN and self proclaimed Marxist in
Obama’s administration.
Nothing else.He acts like “drama quine”.I can’t stand him for more than couple minutes.
His attack on Scott Brown is just another attempt to stand out,to be “unique”.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
Max great post. I’m sick of Glenn Beck. To put it indelicatley, he’s a sanctimonious ass.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:12 am
Thanks, Jonathan. Not for your comment (though I agree with it), but for using the word ‘sanctimonious’ — I was searching for the appropriate word to describe comment #26.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:30 am
This is the same Glenn Beck that “buried” the GOP in a coffin a few weeks ago. For a guy who spends 100% of his time on air criticizing every politician NOT named Sarah Palin, I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy he has been on Scott Brown. If you can’t handle Beck’s attacks on your own party, don’t listen to him –or better yet, criticize his far more egregious attacks on Democrats. But please, stop attacking him for his substance abuse problems.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:52 am
Ugh. Beck needs to pick up Palin and get on a plane and fly to some deserted island. She can bring her hunting rifle and some pantyhose. That way Beck is happy, the GOP is happy. The talk of third party candidates whithers away. it’s win-win-win all around.
January 21st, 2010 at 12:54 am
Glenn Beck was an alcoholic and drug addict?
Why does that never come up on his show?
Beck waits until you walk out of the room before mentioning it a dozen times per show.

January 21st, 2010 at 1:04 am
Glenn Beck is no fan of Sarah Palin,he said several unflattering things about her recently.
He doesn’t like anybody, except Glenn Beck.
January 21st, 2010 at 1:06 am
First off, why not stick to facts, I’m sure there’s plenty of credible reasons to dislike Beck that you don’t have to make up ridiculous stuff. Beck is a very talented entertainer, and is not currently a drunk. I’ll let you slide on the idiot one. Also I know from experience that having a parent who has a past with drugs and even some struggles with them later on in life, does not mean that parent is not able to establish a good and loving relationship with his children. Granted, Beck’s problem may have been more serious as his children were growing up and it could have effected the relationship more, but who died and left you as the judge of that. Maybe you had picture perfect Walton-like parents Max, but those who didn’t know that the imperfect one’s can still have great relationships with their children. To attack Beck’s relationship with his children because of a drug problem he has repented of, is a blow below the belt, a display of a complete lack of Christian charity, and an insult to the millions of families who have had to struggle with this kind of thing. And don’t give me the “he started it” as I think we’re all older than five. You could have attacked Glenn Beck’s lack of charity considering the grace he’s recieved, without essentially denying he’s recieved that grace and making him out to still be a drunk, and you certainly did not need to attack his relationship with his children.

Back like when I was in HS I think Glenn Beck was by far my favorite talkshow host. Unlike MWS I found his humor and sarcasm to be absolutely hilarious. He also came off as genuine and personable (probably in part due to his confession of the alcohol problem), he was also at times less partisan, than say Rush Limbaugh (the current situation would be an example of that.) I basically stopped listening to talk radio over college, and don’t know that I’ve liked him as well since he got his TV show. Like all the talk-shows I guess I find him too black and white, though at least he seems to be that way in a Conservative Populist against the Establishment kind of way instead of Rush Limbaugh’s black and white Republican against Democrat. Anyway, I haven’t anaylized the current issue being discussed, but I generally dislike talkshows and might find Beck’s actions despicable, so my above comment is not defending Beck.
January 21st, 2010 at 5:08 am
Yes, Beck has had his problems with alcohol and drugs…and thank God he has found the strength to overcome his addictions, but to go after Brown as he innocently teased his daughters is beyond belief and very immature. IMO this was the only way he could put a damper on Brown’s win and try to hurt his reputation. Beck’s has become an immature jealous ego maniac, who thinks he can pick our candidates. He is caught in the web of being famous and has let power go to his head…but, if Beck were to leave radio and TV tomorrow, he would be replaced, and after awhile people would forget all about him.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:16 am
Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity all need to retire. Beck and Limbaugh most of all. They are doing great harm to conservatism with all the hateful things that they regularly spew. I am so sick of hearing that terrible excuse “they are just entertainers.” Words have meaning, and just because something is said in sarcasm doesn’t mean that the speaker disbelieves what they are saying. It is when they are the most over the top that you see just how truly hateful Beck and Limbaugh are. Limbaugh used to be a good natured optimist, but he has not been at all since mid 2008. Beck has never been an optimist. If the only emotion that conservatives will respond too is hate, then our country is done for.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:45 am
The more often you publicly embarrass your kids, the better father you are? Making them squirm shows what a great relationship you have? That’s irrational and idiotic.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:55 am
I think the real question is how many times is Beck going to “jump the shark.” Almost every other day soemone on this board says Beck has jumped the shark…I’m pretty sure Fonzie did it just once.
January 21st, 2010 at 1:05 pm
Who cares. It made me uncomfortable when he did it, but i just let it go. It was a little inappropriate for the forum, but who really cares. I wouldn’t have ripped no him like beck did, but i don’t get what the ruckus is about. no big deal.
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:25 am
[...] too liberal and needs to be ham-strung. Low and Behold Glenn Beck (such a useless idiot) was the first to make an ass of himself, but that is nothing [...]
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:36 am
That Cosmo photo is rather engaging, besides, he has to do modelling to pay for
College expenses. What is wrong with that/
January 25th, 2010 at 9:35 am
Glenn Beck’s recovery from alcoholism – which, by the way, I find commendable, despite the fact that he essentially gives me the heebie-jeebies, otherwise – is a non-issue, and I can’t imagine why the topic even was raised. My biggest problem will be trying to erase, from my mind, the left-hand column of truly frightening portraits of individuals appearing under the heading of “The Candidates.” And of those, Ms. Palin tops the list of truly most horrifying.
