Huckabee Continues to Rock Cable Ratings

After a slight drop-off the last few weeks thanks to holiday specials and college football, Governor Huckabee ended another weekend with a commanding victory in the cable news ratings race. Not only did he receive the most viewers in all of his time-slots (including reruns), he beat out every other cable news show over the entire weekend.

Also, Huckabee welcomed Palin to FoxNews, telling Politico:

“It’s good to have her join us, and I feel sure she will enjoy a great working atmosphere and a wonderful team of people”

Sounding Like A Candidate, Sarah Palin Makes Her Debut As Fox News Analyst
    by Colby Hall

Sarah Palin made her Fox News debut “The O’Reilly Factor,” taking questions on today’s top political news and issues. Host Bill O’Reilly was friendly and supportive, but did push Palin on the rumors of her poor intellect presented in the context of her media coverage. Nancy Pelosi, Iran, Harry Reid and of course, Barack Obama were all discussed, and as expected, Palin eloquently hit all talking points consistent with the conservative agenda….

In going over the latest news, Palin hit on a series of conservative talking points that both reinforced why she’s popular and why she’s considering a future run for higher office.

In first appearance as Fox News ‘analyst’, Palin dodges O’Reilly’s questions
    http://rawstory.com/2010/01/palin-calls-new-halperin-book-a-lie/

Even when she’s being paid by her hosts, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin cannot seem to deliver a straight answer.

One of the accusations, that Palin does not know why there is a North and South Korea, was completely mischaracterized by O’Reilly, who asked the former governor if she knew the “difference” between the two rival nations.

“Is this guy lying?” he asked. “He says you don’t know the difference between North and South Korea.”

“Yeah, that is a lie,” she said. “That is a lie.”

However, she did not volunteer an actual response to the specific accusation, nor did O’Reilly press her on why the Korean peninsula is divided.

Another accusation, that Palin was still suggesting during the 2008 campaign that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein were responsible for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, was the next hurdle for the Fox News “analyst” to clear.

“You know, on that, I did talk a lot to [McCain political strategist] Steve Schmidt about the history of the war and about where, perhaps, the 9/11 terrorists came from and could there have been any connection to Saddam,” she explained. “So, I admit I asked questions about it.”

A third accusation, that Palin did not know what enemy her son was going to fight when he shipped off for Iraq, came next. When O’Reilly posed the question, Palin’s response failed to address even whether the claim was truthful.

“See, these reporters were not there,” she said. “I think these political establishment reporters who love to gin up controversy and spin up gossip — the rest of America doesn’t care about that kind of crap.”

Moments later she suggested that reporters John Heilemann and Mark Halperin “are the same guys who are saying, you know, that, uh, you know, some of the other tin foil hat controversy and conspiracy theory stuff.”

Sarah Palin’s Fox debut: Prime-time propaganda
    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zontv/2010/01/sarah_palin_fox_news_bill_orei.html

Sarah Palin and Bill O’Reilly — the only question is how high the ratings will go.

What a pair and what an awful politicization of TV news.

O’Reilly, the highest rated host on cable news TV, introduced the newest star in the Fox News galaxy Tuesday night as a “news analyst.” If what Palin did in her debut is news analysis, I’m the governor of Alaska and I can see Russia from my backyard.

This is how the conversation between O’Reilly and Palin mainly went on O’Reilly’s hit show:

“Nancy Pelosi,” O’Reilly said to Palin referencing the Speaker of the House, “….do you think that she’s a kook?”

“I think she, too, is quite disconnected from what her constituents are telling her — and constituents all over the country …” Palin replied, before O’Reilly cut back in and upped the ante on Pelosi as “kook.”

“Well, she’s a San Francisco liberal,” O’Reilly said. “But do you think she’s actually crazy?”

“I doubt that her San Francisco constituents even are enamoured with her policies and with the guidance she is providing this country.”

“Is she further to the left in your opinion than Barack Obama?’

    “Perhaps so, yes, yes.”

How would Palin know what Pelosi’s San Francisco constituents think of her? But that’s the rational critique of her words, and that is not the way most of us connect with our TV sets.

In the language of television, that exchange was a perfect interview pas de deux, with Palin sounding intelligent and reasonable with all the “perhaps-es” and the “quites,” while O’Reilly deftly introduced the outrageous notion that Pelosi is “crazy” — and somehow made it seem like it is a widely held belief.

What a cart and pony show. O’Reilly is a TV master, Palin’s a TV player, and together they are going to bring orgiastic TV delight to right-wing viewers. I think I actually heard Nielsen People Meters exploding on TV sets in the more affluent suburbs of Baltimore last night when these two really got going.

I will spare you the scenario of O’Reilly teeing up old sad sack Harry Reid so that Palin could talk about her lifelong commitment to “diversity” and how indefensible she found Reid’s comments about the color of Obama’s skin.

I will also spare you the show-trial-like give-and-take play acting they did which featured O’Reilly quoting or replaying bad things that were said about Palin on “60 Minutes” so that she could call them “b.s.” or label them one-by-one a “lie” and try to rewrite what she said — just as she did in her book “Going Rogue.”

I must briefly mention, however, the way O’Reilly helped her promote a Tea Party event at which she will be the featured speaker — and the way he tried to defend her receiving payment for the appearance. I must because I really hate it when O’Reilly uses TV this way to promote partisan events. [Note: Palin did not rule out running as the candidate in 2012 for a presently non-existent Tea Party.]

I will also share what she had to say about Obama’s sinking poll numbers: “Of course, they’re sinking. It was just a matter of time before more of that reflection of the people’s uncomfortableness that they feel towards this administration is manifesting in these poll numbers,” she said. “… There is an obvious disconnect between President Obama and the White House, what they are doing to our economy and what they are doing in terms of not allowing Americans to feel as safe as we had felt…”

I forgot how Palin speaks in a grammar and syntax unlike anyone else, but you get the idea. And I’ll tell you what: In a protected TV environment like the one Fox and O’Reilly skillfully provided for her Tuesday night, I think she could be a red-hot ratings winner. And the country and our political conversation are going to be the poorer for it.

I can only imagine what kind of power these two could wield in the elections of 2010. This is not news analysis. This is TV as political propaganda.

    From the link at #12

Bill O’Reilly, who welcomed her to Fox with an introductory interview on his “O’Reilly Factor,” remarked afterward that talking with Palin was really “no different from interviewing Chuck Schumer” or the other politicians he regularly quizzes.

Palin, who exploded on the political scene in 2008 when Republican presidential candidate John McCain picked her to be his running mate, seemed relaxed….

The former Alaska governor has become skilled at maintaining her composure, and it was clear Tuesday night she enjoyed being where she knew almost all the audience was “us,” not “them.”

O’Reilly threw out some tough comments – “The perception of you is that you’re not that smart” – but also offered his personal reassurance that he doesn’t believe most of the bad stuff.

Because of the interview format, it was hard to get a sense of what Palin will be contributing in her analyst role.

She came across more as a political critic of President Obama than as a commentator – though campaign-style rhetoric is a lot of what news “commentary” has become these days, on both ends of the political spectrum.

She said nothing to suggest she’s tabling any of her own political options to join Fox News, and several of her responses to O’Reilly’s questions came straight from the campaign playbook.

Asked about Nevada Sen. Harry Reid’s startling comments about Obama’s lack of a “Negro dialect,” she began by saying, “I come from a very diverse state.”

She also stayed on message, a valuable quality in both a political candidate and an analyst.

When O’Reilly pressed her about unflattering claims in the new book “Game Change” of being an ignoramus, she pointedly told him several times, “I don’t think the American people care about this.”

She underscored her populist appeal with a plain-talk style that could set her apart from analysts who go for clever wordplay and subtlety – in neither of which she has shown much interest.

  17. Martha Says:

I listened and it was tough. When Palin speaks, I’m always a little uncomfortable. You just never know.

  18. Pablo Says:

  20. Tommy Boy Says:

#18 No she didn’t. She only admitted to asking questions about whether there “could…have been any connection to Saddam.”

O’Reilly asked a follow-up and she said that she didn’t believe it.

In any event, 41% of the country’s adults (and probably a large majority of Republicans) “believe Saddam Hussein’s regime was directly involved in financing, planning or carrying out the terrorist attacks on 9/11.”

    http://www.newsweek.com/id/39529

  21. Heath Says:

ps I’m going to try to be fair to Palin in 10 – especially not that she may not be running – but she was horrible on BOR.

  22. Martha Says:

Tommy, Palin refused to answer nearly all of O’Reilly’s questions. He kept repeating them, and she kept ignoring him. Her responses were either – it’s lies, gossip (BTW gossip is usually true) or the American people don’t care about this crap.

I find that her responses very telling.

  23. Heath Says:

In that case TB 41% of the country are idiots. Do you count yourself in that 41%? If not then stop defending them.

  29. David Shedlock Says:

Before I look at all of your posts, I think the most significant thing about those statistics is that Sunday’s show is a rerun! and gets higher ratings. It doesn’t look like Sunday gets higher ratings overall because all three of the other competitors have smaller audiences on Sundays. It is possible that word-of-mouth interest encouraged people to tune in, or some folks thought it was worth watching twice.

  30. David Shedlock Says:

Martha drolled: “Oh yeah, I’m sure Huck is real happy to see Palin at FOX.”

Not everybody hates every candidate other than their own, Martha. You sound bitter.

  31. David Shedlock Says:

““So, I admit I asked questions about it.””

This would be a much better tack for Palin to take, I think. I don’t think the most ardent Palin supporters think she is as informed as she should be on issues (that is not the same thing as saying she is stupied!). Admitting that you have lots to learn and plenty of time to do it would further endear her to those who like her style, moral perspective and gumption.

  32. Thunder Says:

Let both Huckabee and Palin stay at fox! Both will do more there than either would do running for President. As candidates, they are both bad, as Commentators and political pundits, I can get behind them. My predict that neither Huckabee or Palin will seek the Presidency in 2012, but instead will opt for the more lucrative TV, Radio gigs (Which I am perfectly fine with).

As far as Palin and Huckabee getting along at FOX, I see no problem there. The bigger question is going to be what Huckabee reaction will be when Romney eventually gets the Nomination. Will he final give up his grudge (which he self inflicted) and interview Romney on his show.

    32. OR…

Will Romney congratulate Huckabee if Mike gets the nomination?

    And campaign on Mike’s behalf?

Never going to happen, but Romney is a bigger man than Huckabee, so at a minimum, he will not take pot shots at him as Huckabee did to Romney.

If by some weird circumstance, Huckabee gets the nomination, he will have to deal with the Religious Bigot label he now wears, especially with the LDS population who vote overwhelmingly Republican, but will be hard pressed to vote for Huckabee. While over all they are not significant to make up the difference nationally, they do make up enough in key states that Huckabee would probably not win the Oval office, and will effectively leave Obama in for 4 more years.

  35. lkv Says:

I thought Palin did terrible….she looked different, her eyes looked different, looked ticked off. Questions were nothing new…..”How do you think Obama’s doing”? her answer: “More of that reflection of people’s uncomfortability”, translate please…I’m not a expert in grammar, but is that a word? With all due respect to her and her supporters, she was totaly unprepared….When asked about Pelosi, she said that Pelosi’s constituents are PROBABLY not enamored by her…What…..she represents San Francisco, and they love her…And what about that lame answer she gave on Iran……..If there is no criticism from her supporters, then she will continue making the same mistakes over and over again, if you think that everything she says is great and don’t ask anything of her, then she’ll keep on giving superficial answers, and will not be taken seriously. This gig with FOX might really hurt her politically if she doesn’t do her research and become proficient on the issues.

  36. lkv Says:

With all due respect, Huckabee’s show does well because there’s absolutely nothing on CNN and MSNBC….How many times can someone watch Lock-up, and who knows if people are even watching it, or if they just have the TV on for backround noise like I do for my little blind dog so he knows where he is.

  37. Tommy Boy Says:

When asked about Pelosi, she said that Pelosi’s constituents are PROBABLY not enamored by her…What…..she represents San Francisco, and they love her

Do you have a poll to back up your assertion that Pelosi’s constituents “love her?”

How much more liberal do you think Pelosi’s district is than the rest of California? I’d suspect based on the following numbers that her approval rating is actually sub-50% in her district and this is based on the Field poll, which is pretty favorable to Democrats.

Poll: Only 34 percent of Californians approve of Pelosi’s performance

Although I am no big fan of Huckabee, as a candidate for President I dislike him, but he has a large following which he created during his run for the President, and there is no denying it. Its not enough of a following to get him elected President, but it enough to get high ratings for a Cable show, regardless of the time slot.

    30. David, I guess you missed the snarky comments Huck’s made about Palin over the last year. I don’t see any reason why Huck should be happy about Palin stealing his thunder at FOX. I’m not saying his show ratings will change, just that she’s a lot more likable and popular with Republicans than he is. It was sort of his territory, and she moved in – again.

  46. OHIO JOE Says:

“just that she’s a lot more likable and popular with Republicans than he is.” We can also substitute Mr. Romney for the word he.

It will be very difficult for him not to pursue POTUS in 2012. Had the republican party not been so divided in 2008 and realized that Huckabee was our strongest candidate against Obama, we could of beat Obama in 2008. I think the reality that goes with the damage of an Obama Administration is causing people to look to Huckabee for the leadership that is clearly lacking today in the White House.

Michael Reagan Becomes Honorary Chairman of the FairTax National Victory Campaign
    Friday, January 15, 2010
    By: Ken Hoagland

For Immediate Release: January 15, 2010

Michael Reagan, the eldest son of President Ronald Reagan, has been named the Honorary Chairman of the National FairTax Victory campaign according to officials at FairTax.org.

“This is a natural step considering how strongly Michael has worked to keep alive the legacy and meaning of Ronald Reagan’s work and influence on public policy,” said Ken Hoagland of the FairTax National Victory Campaign.

“My father understood that the income tax system works against the nation’s best interests and primarily benefits the political class,” said Mr. Reagan. “I am convinced that had it existed in his time, my father would have been a strong proponent of the FairTax.”

“This new year of 2010 is the 30th Anniversary of my father’s successful campaign to replace Jimmy Carter as President. Then, as now, the nation was mired in a deep economic recession, our nation was viewed as in decline domestically and internationally, and the American people were looking for real, positive and substantive change in the direction of our country. My father, Ronald Reagan, offered and went on to provide just that, real and positive change for the United States. The FairTax will provide the same kind of free enterprise driven economic growth, simplified tax system, reduced taxes to honest Americans, millions of new jobs and a realistic way of dealing with the massive and rapidly growing deficit.”

Reagan noted that there have been tens of thousands of changes to the tax code since his father lead the charge for tax reductions and a simplified system. “The special interest lobbyist-driven changes that have undermined his work to simplify the tax code prove that it is a beast that cannot be tamed– only replaced,” said Reagan. “I remember my father saying, ‘Extreme taxation, excessive controls, oppressive government competition with business, frustrated minorities and forgotten Americans are not the products of free enterprise. They are the residue of centralized bureaucracy, of government by the self-anointed elite.’ It is clear to me that if the FairTax existed then, he would have been a FairTax champion.”

“This will remain a non-partisan national movement to win enactment of a far better national tax system,” said Reagan. “Like my father, the FairTax campaign has long said that such big changes must be driven by Americans across the political spectrum,” he said. “I join many Democrats as well as Republicans and independents who believe the FairTax will cure a host of national problems and lead to a new era of robust economic growth”.

Reagan pointed out that the FairTax will attract trillions of dollars of foreign investment into the U.S. economy and bring back trillions more in American investments currently in offshore accounts and investments, expand the national tax base dramatically to include taxation of those who illegally avoid taxation or benefit from special tax breaks to the politically powerful, and lift the weight of federal taxes and payroll deductions entirely from millions of poor and elderly. “It is the shortest path to full economic recovery and millions of new jobs, ending Congressional corruption of the tax code and providing significant tax relief to the middle class”, he said. “The FairTax ends the special benefits enjoyed by the political class which has so badly hurt our economy.”

National FairTax Victory Campaign official Ken Hoagland said that Mr. Reagan will lead a revitalized national effort to bring the FairTax into every American household and to Congress. “We have started with a petition to the House Ways and Means Committee to hold a fair and balanced hearing about pending FairTax legislation that now has 65 co-sponsors in the Senate and House of Representatives.”

HMMM im trying to think who else was forward thinking enough to be a Fair Tax supporter. Just another example of how much like Reagan Huckabee is. The only major candidate pushing the Fair Tax is Gov Huckabee.. why? becuase he’s the only one that wants to let us have control of our own money back! visit http://www.fairtax.org
