One of the progenitors of the American conservative movement has departed.
At a time when the GOP seems more determined than at any time in the last quarter-century to stray from its conservative moorings, WFB’s passing is an ill tiding.

I say Buckley speak when he came to the University of Illinois about 12 years ago. Great guy and a great mind, but I could only understand every third word.
But anyway, coupled with the loss of Milton Friedman last year, this leaves a huge void to be filled on the Right. I’m not sure if there’s anyone around right now to do that.
I am reminded of the televised debates among the candidates for the New York City mayoralty in 1965. (Buckley was the nominee of the Conservative Party.) As you might imagine, Buckley stole the show.
At one point, Buckley had finished his answer to a question in less than the allotted time, and the moderator informed him he had another 45 seconds left. Without missing a beat, Buckley replied, “Thank you, Mr. Pressman. I think I shall just reflect silently upon the eloquence of my previous remarks.”
Even in 1965, 45 seconds of air time was “eternity”.
Mr. Buckley will now have his request granted. Not a bad way at all to spend eternity.

I appreciated “God and Man at Yale”.
I also greatly enjoyed Buckley’s old Crossfire show. It had the intelligent sort of debates you don’t see anymore.
Also how can’t you love someone who snidely tells Gore Vidal:
“I’ll give you a thrashing you won’t soon forget you degenerate”
Requiescat in pace.

Let us hope that the GOP eventually realizes the folly of this Iraq War, as did WFB.

I remember several months ago, some imbecile commenter on this site called WFB a “liberal defeatist” because of his Iraq stance.
