Sen. John Danforth Endorses McCain

Sorry about my absence over the past day and a half, I’ve had to tend to some unexpected family issues. Looks like I missed a lot of the fun.

After winning Florida, McCain has rapidly consolidated his position as the likely 2008 Republican nominee. Today, he picked up support of Gov. Rick Perry, Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Senator and United Nations Ambassador John Danforth.

On Danforth:

U.S. Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign today announced that John C. Danforth, former U.S. Senator from Missouri and United States Ambassador to the United Nations, has endorsed John McCain for president. Senator Danforth will serve as the honorary Chair of John McCain’s Missouri campaign.

“I have known John McCain for many years, and I am proud to endorse him for president,” said Senator Danforth. “John McCain’s lifetime of service, unparalleled knowledge of world affairs and ability to work across party lines make him the best candidate in this election. In these uncertain times, John McCain is uniquely equipped to meet our challenges and lead our nation in the struggle against radical Islamic extremism. I am proud to help spread John McCain’s message across the country and to the good people of the state of Missouri.”

John McCain expressed his appreciation for Senator Danforth’s support, stating, “I am honored to have John’s support. His knowledge of the issues facing our nation will prove valuable to my campaign, and I grateful to have him on our team.”

In addition, K Street has also begun to coalesce behind McCain. He has raised well over $10 million since his New Hampshire victory and has several fundraisers scheduled over the next few days. McCain and Giuliani are also making a joint appearance on Leno tonight.

  1. MetroRepublican Says:

He was never an economic conservative.

  2. Nathan Says:

As a conservative, none of McCain’s recent endorsements impress me. In fact, they make me like him even less (and that’s hard to do)!

  3. Matthew E. Miller Says:

10 million stacks up pretty well against the 32 million Obama has raised in the same time period…or…umm…

  4. Jeffrey Says:

wow – the good ol’ boys club comes out for one of their own – who’d have guessed!?

  5. ilfigo Says:

Joint appearance??? Is this the ticket? Are conservatives getting a swift kick in the nuts in that not a single person on the ticket is Conservative??

  6. redbmsky Says:

good to see the political machines are in full throttle

  7. JerryO Says:

wow … the old boys club makes it very clear; they don’t want anybody from the outside to come in and put them under a microscope.

  8. The REAL Truth Says:

I can guaranty that if McCain is the Republican nominee many (if not most) conservatives will not vote for him, many will leave the party and McCain will lose the general in a landslide. Conservatives look at his endorsements and see a lot of liberals, that alone should tell us somthing.

He was a stuttering idiot with a chip on his shoulder last night at the debate. Somewhere along the line the Republican party has been hijacked.

  9. matthew Says:

What a wave of endorsements for McCain. Is this enough to beat Romney even without Super Tuesday?

    http://www.political-buzz.com/

  10. JamesB Says:

McCain’s swiftboating of Romney on Iraq is just another example of McCain’s conduct unbecoming….a conservative republican.

  11. Billy Says:

Yea and the two Senator’s from Georgia are Liberal’s also……riiiight. McCain is getting endorsements from Conservatives and Moderates. Last time i checked Phil Gramm, Joe Wilson, Lindsay Graham, Sam Brownback, Jack Kemp, and Rick Perry were good Conservative Republicans, not to mention Georgia Sen.’s Chambliss and Isaakson, who are beloved figures in the state of Georgia, and the word is also that the Georgia Governor is set to endorse McCain also, so you people need to just grow up!!

  12. Billy Says:

Yea and Romney’s assault on Huckabee and McCain was all fair! Romney is the most arrogant person i’ve ever seen and he is full of lies and distortions. He is one of the biggest Flip Floppers i’ve ever seen, even more thatn John Kerry, we dont want a Mormon from Mass. as president, and that’s why Romney is not winning anywhere despite spending 50 million of his own dollars.

  13. davew Says:

god this site is full of crybabies……so if mccain wins is R42008 going to be shut down??

What I don’t get is why you all are so willing to support a guy who would get CRUSHED in the general (im speaking of romney of course). I don’t fault you for liking him and believing in him, but let’s just look at the facts here (after all they are ‘stubborn’ things). He simply could not compete against either hill or barak. Are you so willing to stick to each and every bit of his platform that you would see HER in the white house?

  14. joe c. Says:

so what is the scenario where mccain doesnt win the nom? is it possible?

  15. murphy Says:

These latest endorsements for McCain aren’t because they believe in him. It’s because he’s clearly winning.

This is less of an indication of people believing he’s presidential than it is an indication of people believing he’s good for some Washington-style back scratching down the road.

    …though McCain probably earned Ahnold.

  16. James Says:

Billy – “Georgia Sen.’s Chambliss and Isaakson, who are beloved figures in the state of Georgia”
Are you from Georgia, you bigoted jerk? Those are not beloved figures in the state of Georgia for a number of reasons.

  17. Jeffrey Says:

Billy – the GA senators aren’t libs – just opportunistic protectors of the good old boys club

And they are Senators afterall, so they know what’s best. The rest of the nation just needs to shut the hell up.

Zaxby Chambliss actually said, “Let us educate you” about the amnesty bill. Give us a freakin’ break. No one in this country gives a flying crap about senate rules and back scratching and horse trading of support. It’s all the emperor’s new clothes to fly over country (just like that cartoon of Bill Clinton today BTW – ha!).

Washington as a whole are a bunch of arrogant do nothings motivated by the wining and dining – essentially America’s aristocracy.

When is this nation going to rise up, grab the pitchforks, and run the whole lot of them out of town?

Protecting Washington on the back of the Americans is frankly, un-American.

  18. Political Junkie Says:

Billy, “We don’t want a Mormon from Mass”. I think you might be showing your true colors. How much anti-Mormon bigotry is causing this rush away from Romney. He is obviously the most competent candidate. He is more intelligent then any of his rivals. The Christian right is afraid to stand by him because of his Mormon faith, and that is all there is to it. If he were an evangelical, he would be blowing McCain away.

  19. civic virtue Says:

These latest endorsements for McCain aren’t because they believe in him. It’s because he’s clearly winning.

Whatever gets you through the night, [s]Murph. Shouldn’t you be off making four hundred thousand calls for Mitt or something?

  20. Jeffrey Says:

Billy – do a little research on these “beloved GA senators”

    http://burningatlanta.bloghi.com/2007/06/14/senators-chambliss-and-isakson-are-weasels.html

  21. civic virtue Says:

Protecting Washington on the back of the Americans is frankly, un-American.

We agree on that point anyway.

  22. Sancy Says:

Hannity is about to endorse a candidate on his radio show in 5 minutes.

  23. civic virtue Says:

I can guaranty that if McCain is the Republican nominee many (if not most) conservatives will not vote for him, many will leave the party and McCain will lose the general in a landslide.

How many times are you mittwits going to repeat this line? What is your intent in doing so? Do you honestly believe it’s persuasive?

  24. Joel Says:

So how does Huckabee feel about McCain ditching him for Giuliani?

  25. Political Junkie Says:

Just so you all know the Mormon comunity has always voted with evangelicals. In fact, Bill Clinton came in 3rd in Utah in 1992. That’s right 3rd behind Bush and Perot. If you want to continue to count on our support in the future, it might be nice of you to stand behind one of our guys. Huck has no way of winning, Evangelicals should unite behind Mitt.

  26. The REAL Truth Says:

    Billy
Lets get a couple of things straight

    1. Lindsay Graham is not a conservative he and McCain have been doing backroom deals for years.
If he was my Senator I would be embarassed to have a Jackass represent me.
    2. Romney never lied about Huck or McCain or their records. Huck and Mac have both gone after Romney personally and lyed about his record and what he said.

Conservative will flock away from McCain if he is the nominee, no doubt about it, McCain will make Carter look like a big winner in 1980

  27. civic virtue Says:

If he were an evangelical, he would be blowing McCain away.

Reagan wasn’t an Evangelical. Neither was the elder Bush.

  28. Jeffrey Says:

Huckabee feels like a cheerleader the day after the prom who didn’t a phone call from the next day

  29. Brian Says:

We can NOT allow McCain to win. Period.

  30. civic virtue Says:

… in the future, it might be nice of you to stand behind one of our guys. Huck has no way of winning, Evangelicals should unite behind Mitt …

I can’t presume to speak for Evangelicals—I’m a Jew—but had you forwarded a candidate who was honest, forthright, principled, and who didn’t have to run against his own record, I would vote for him in a heartbeat. I’m not anti-Mormon. I’m anti-Romney. And I’m certainly not going to vote for someone to assuage your sense of grievance. There has never been a Jew president either and you know what?—I don’t feel terribly oppressed.

  31. The REAL Truth Says:

    CIVIC

I’M JUST TELLING YOU THE TRUTH, CAN YOU TAKE IT. MCCAIN IS NOT GOING TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT UNLESS OBAMA PUTS HIM ON THE TICKET.

  32. Political Junkie Says:

    Civic

True, but Reagan and Bush probably would have lost if they were Mormons.

  33. civic virtue Says:

We can NOT allow McCain to win. Period.

You’ve done a horrible job of stopping him up until now. How do you intend to proceed at so late an hour?

  34. MWS Says:

All these guys lining up to endorse McCain are doing it for the same reason Hondurus declared war on Germany in 1945. They just want to side with the winner, and decided McCain is going to win. There is nothing more to it than that.

    Typical politicians.

  35. Jeffrey Says:

civic – McCain’s strategy was to play possum and since he’s already older than dirt and already floundering on insignificance as recently as 2 months ago, the other candidates decided to lay off of him – must to everyone’s utter horror now.

  36. Psycheout Says:

When it rains it pours. Is it time to congratulate nominee McCain yet? Or will the Romney supporters finally get behind the anti-McCain candidate with appeal, Mike Huckabee?

Of course they won’t. Mittens hasn’t got a prayer, folks. People either worship the guy, or they can’t stand him. He’s so transparently fake. But his cheering section just can’t see it.

And those of you who are threatening to vote Democrat, you make me sick. I don’t believe a word of it, if you’re actually conservatives. If you’re going to support the DemocRATs, it’s time to get over to Daily Kooks.

  37. Jeffrey Says:

Hannity called on Huckabee to get out of the race. hah hahahaa

  38. civic virtue Says:

I’M JUST TELLING YOU THE TRUTH, CAN YOU TAKE IT. MCCAIN IS NOT GOING TO BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT UNLESS OBAMA PUTS HIM ON THE TICKET.

The all-caps are a nice touch.

Whether Sen. McCain becomes our next president or not is an open question. The primary voters so far have spoken largely in his favor. That’s the way the system works. If you’re proposing revolutionary change then go take up rifle and man the barricades. I’ll see you on the news I suppose.

  39. Billy Says:

And Sam Brownback, Jack Kemp, Rep. Joe Wilson, and Phil Gramm, i guess there liberal’s to huh? Why dont YOU do your own research!!! You guys are ridiculous!

    McCain/Pawlenty 08′!!!

  40. Psycheout Says:

Some of the commenters here need to get some Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.

    No more tears, folks.

  41. JerryO Says:

Billy: Lindsay Grahamnesty – a conservative?!? wow – share some of what you’re smoking!!!

  42. Political Junkie Says:

I’m not saying we are oppressed, although there was certainly a time in our history when we were. There is a terrible misunderstanding about Mormons. We are very interested in civic involvement and very patriotic. I just wish people could get past these misunderstandings.

  43. civic virtue Says:

civic – McCain’s strategy was to play possum and since he’s already older than dirt and already floundering on insignificance as recently as 2 months ago, the other candidates decided to lay off of him – must to everyone’s utter horror now.

That’s an interesting interpretation. Do you really, honestly believe it?

Romney didn’t “lay off him.” Romney went horribly negative against McCain and it backfired; Romney’s own poll numbers tanked enough for Sen. McCain to take NH from him.

  44. The REAL Truth Says:

    Civic

you might not feel oppressed but you will feel depressed when the lib mccain raises income taxes, gas taxes (for the enviroment) and gets in bed with the libs on every important issue like letting all the illegals stay and earn citizenship (and vote for him) etc…………………………………………………………….

I know you are on the liberal side of the fence but when you get a little older and have a few dollars saved up and the Fed Government takes it away, you to might be a conservative.

  45. civic virtue Says:

There is a terrible misunderstanding about Mormons. We are very interested in civic involvement and very patriotic. I just wish people could get past these misunderstandings.

On these points we heartily agree.

Please, please understand: I oppose Romney; I do not oppose Mormons, Mormonism, or the participation of Mormons in public life.

  46. The REAL Truth Says:

Psycheout – ” When it rains it pours. Is it time to congratulate nominee McCain yet? Or will the Romney supporters finally get behind the anti-McCain candidate with appeal, Mike Huckabee?”

    Thats interesting, stupid but interesting

Huck is the McCain kiss @#$ who probably could have won the nomination had he told the truth instead of kissing up to Mac every chance he got. I hate to tell him but he wont be in Mr. Mac’s short list of VP choices.

  47. Psycheout Says:

So are all of you McCain haters proposing that the GOP become a small tent party? Do we want to win elections and get 50% of what we want or do we want to concede to the Dems and get nothing?

  48. MWS Says:

All of these 11th hour endorsements remind me of one of my favorite quotes about politicians:

There go the people. I must follow them, for I am their leader.

  49. civic virtue Says:

… you might not feel oppressed but you will feel depressed when the lib mccain raises income taxes, gas taxes (for the enviroment) and gets in bed with the libs on every important issue like letting all the illegals stay and earn citizenship (and vote for him) etc …

Those are policy differences and I respect them. It is up to the Senator to address them each in turn to try to win your vote. If he fails, he fails; that’s the way the game is played. It is the same for Romney.

… I know you are on the liberal side of the fence but when you get a little older and have a few dollars saved up and the Fed Government takes it away, you to might be a conservative …

I don’t know where you’re coming up with this. Let us just say that you assume incorrectl.

  50. MWS Says:

    Psycheout,

“Do we want to win elections and get 50% of what we want or do we want to concede to the Dems and get nothing?”

    Depends on which 50%.

  51. The REAL Truth Says:

    #47 Psycheout

I say we go for “nothing” until people get it figured out. If we let McCain and the other libs (democrats) run the country for a while maybe people would wake up.

  52. The REAL Truth Says:

not much of a sense of humor

  53. liz Says:

Danforth doesn’t realize McCain despises him along with the rest of the American people.

  54. liz Says:

I mean, McCain despises Americans. Least he acts like it all the time, smirky arrogant fella.

  55. Axel G. (independent) Says:

I do wonder whether a little anti-mormonism has reared its ugly head. Some of these pols do not like McCain – they have all known him a long time and sat on their hands until now – so is it just the FL win or is it the lack of an acceptable alternative. I think the test will be whether McCain considers Romney as VP. I think he has to at least show that willingness.

  56. The REAL Truth Says:

Romney will not accept McCains VP job if it was offered and I would loose my respect for him if he did.

  57. ilfigo Says:

Civic Virtue…you must have alzheimers like McCain….McCain’s numbers went up due to the MSM, weeks before Mitt ran his first comparison ad. When did the MSM pick up on the personal attack ads that McCain ran on TV and his personal robocall attacks??

Psycheout…I don’t want the GOP being such a big tent where we turn our backs on conservative values. Becoming the Democratic party does not guarantee us wins. Who will liberals and indies believe in pursuing a liberal agenda? A former conservative-turned-liberal to work with a liberal Congress or a liberal working with a liberal Congress??

As a Romney supporter, McCain will win the nomination as long as he is alive by the convention. He hasn’t crushed anyone away in any of his contests. 3-5 points in NH and FLA when Rudy gave him the liberals and moderates while Huck split the Conservatives. C’mon….

McCain has a slight chance agaisnt Clinton and no chance with Obama. You will likely cite H2H polls, but those same polls had Rudy as the ONLY ELECTABLE GOP candidate 6-7 months ago. We still have 9 months until the general and the MSM will hit McCain on every possible issue.

  58. ilfigo Says:

I would feel better pulling the lever for McCain if Romeny was the VP because McCain may not last the first term and after his one term, Romney would win in 2012. Better than having another liberal like Rudy or Huck as VP.

  59. The REAL Truth Says:

    ilfigo

    Your right on

  60. ilfigo Says:

And about the Mormon bigots…at least you people didn’t assasinate this POTUS candidate like you all did before. Therefore, the bigotry is dying down about Mormons in politics.

FYI to the Mormon bigots here….Harry Reid is also Mormon. Where’s the backlash?? Or when Orrin Hatch was head of the Judiciary Committee??

  61. The REAL Truth Says:

    I should clarify

my #59 was for your #57

as for your #58 – I disagree with that one. a liberal Pres. and a COnservative VP still makes a Liberal administration.
and Romney would be tanted with Mac’s bad policies.

We would be better off having the country in the toilet for four years (like Carter) then getting it back.

  62. David Says:

    Apropos of nothing, per Lileks:

“I like John McCain. He seems like the sort of guy you could have a beer with, right up to the moment where he smashes the bottle on the table and jams it in your face over something you said six years ago.”

  63. ilfigo Says:

Real Truth…I agree with you. But if JMAC does win (which I stated is slight) then his liberal VP would become the establishment candidate, which could lead to 4-12 years of the GOP being controlled by liberals!!

  64. grandma T Says:

Sean Hannity just announced that he was voting for Romney.

  65. Illinoisguy Says:

Glad to hear Hannity finally say that.

  66. Shawnie Says:

    Civic – you’re not civil.
