For Giuliani, Money Wasn’t Everything
The now-defunct presidential campaign of Rudy Giuliani just filed its year-end financial report, revealing a robust fundraising operation in the final months of 2007. The former New York mayor raised $14.4 million in the fourth quarter and $61.6 million for the year with $12.8 million cash on hand going into 2008. Giuliani likely will be one of last year’s top Republican fundraisers, but he struggled in the primaries and dropped out of the race yesterday and backed GOP front-runner John McCain, who raised $42.1 million last year and had $2.9 million in cash.

Romney didn’t raise 14M in Q4. Rudy will be the overall leader in fundraising for the entire season.
Romney’s self-funding will reflect 40M as of Q4, but once January is added to that number (to be release 3 weeks from now) it will be a shockingly high figure closer to 75M.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:11 pm
I’m seeing on a Ron Paul site that he will come in with about 19 million.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Metro,
How much do you think Romney is going to throw down for Super Tuesday alone?
January 31st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Metro,
Didn’t Mitt himself note that he had to release that number today?
January 31st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Patrick, dunno, but it seems to be a restrained spend, less heavy on TV ads.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Yes, Romney admitted the # had to come out on Jan 31. They seem to be waiting for the very end of the day.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
just how screwed is the GOP. The frontrunner has barely raised any money and had $3M on hand to start the year.
Talk about an uninspiring guy. For the year he will probably be in 4th place for Money raised behind rudy, Mitt and Ron
If Mccain is the guy we will get clobbered this fall.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Mitt should be embarrassed by how much of his own money he has spent on his campaign.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:30 pm
UA that is a dumb thing to say. there is no shame in spending your own money. absolutely nothing to be embarassed by. he wont even spend half his net worth, and he has more money than he knows what to do with. should he do the same with his money as michael jackson, mike tyson , and MC hammer did with theirs? would that be less embarassing?
what happens to candidates with left over money? do they have to give it back? or can they keep it
January 31st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
UA
Mitt had to spend his own money due to the fact that the only media coverage he got was negative. The media wants Hillary…….The media gave Hucka and McCain FREE coverage. Obama has 30+ million to spend….Hillary has more….We are toast in an election with McCain..Mitt will NOT be bought. He will NOT make back room deals to be President. Arnold used his own money and no one had a problem.. Get a clue people. Either stay home or vote Dem. At least we know what we are getting.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
MC Hammer?
January 31st, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Tommy,
MC hammer had Mitt money, at one point. And he blew threw it in almost no time. how he spent it is documented on his wiki page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mc_hammer
now he lives in a modest home near my sister in tracy, CA
HAMMER TIME!
January 31st, 2008 at 8:39 pm
It is difficult to speak on fiscal responsibility of other GOP candidates when you spend $40-75 million dollars, not including the amount of donations. If this is what he has done with his campaign, just think how awful he could be with the national economy.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
UA. thats a dumb argument. mitt did what he did BECAUSE he had the money. if he had less money, he would have used less money. what he wouldnt have done, is spent himself into debt and taken loans out like john mccain
January 31st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
UA – your statements are moronic, bless your heart.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
He was leading in IA, got behind in the polls and then spent MILLIONS more in ads.
He was leading in NH, got behind in the polls and then spent MILLIONS more in ads.
How many millions did he spend in MI, NV, SC, and FL? Fox reported today that he would spend 7 million in ads for California.
Cleary this is not a guy that is conservative on spending.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
I wonder if McCain will be begging all those evil profit-seeking businessmen and women for money to keep his campaign afloat … and how successful will he be?
January 31st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
UA – bless your heart, once again, but your statements are idiotic. You seem to have very little understanding of the political process.
Barack Obama, 01/31/08 “I worked with John McCain to move forward a humane ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ package.”
January 31st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
McCain should be happy that his Father-in-Law was one of the evil profit-makers, otherwise he never would have been able to sustain himself in politics.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:53 pm
#20 Guess it just depends on who is making the profits! I’m sure disappointed with my state and will not under any circumstances be persuaded to vote for him if he wins the nomination.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
#16 – don’t worry about me. I am not the one following Mitt like a lost, blind puppy.
you are in denial if you think Mitt can turn this around. He had his chance and he lost it. Move on.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I’m not lost or blind and not a puppy either. It’s called believing. As long as Gov Romney believes he has a chance and stays in this thing I will support him. I casted my vote nearly a month ago now, but I will still support him in all ways possible.
He has not lost until he concedes and at that point I will start working on my local elections and regaining the NH legislature for the GOP and hopefully the Governor’s mansion as well.
I will spend time this weekend in MA working for the Governor as I can’t afford to go any further away but will continue to participate in the Call At Home program.
I’m not in denial at all. His chances are looking very slim but he is not yet finished. He has spent his entire career overcoming near impossible odds and I won’t put this past him either.

January 31st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
So that’s under 30M for Romney’s total self-funding — through Dec 31. Add 8 more figures for what he spent in Jan. We find that out in 3 more weeks.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Ray, can we use Call At Home for other states than our own? I’ve only used it for fundraising a while back. I know a lot of people here who want to help, but up until now, we’ve been using call sheets from the campaign. Now that FL is done, we’re anxious to help out with other states but aren’t sure what to do.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
For Romeny it is all primaty funds no general. ALL the others collected for general. Romney had to use more money because the gang of 14…I mean the gang of 4 put all their efforts together to take him down…add it all up and how much did they spend to take out one candidate.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
FLVoter….you can definitely call other states…I did it from Illinois for Florida, not that it helped any.
January 31st, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Thanks
Well, we definitely were doing some good until all those harassing robo calls from the opposition the day before the election! I always heard politics was a nasty business, but now I know firsthand. Considering what we were up against, we didn’t do half bad. But I guess you’re right … in the end it didn’t help. I’m certainly no expert like all of you, but it seems kind of odd for the winner to take all when there’s more than 2 candidates still in the race. McCain just as well had his name on the ballot twice and Huckabee should be ashamed. Yeah, I’m bitter. But I and many others I know will vote for Hillary or sit out the general if John McCain is the nominee. I’ve read this blog for over a year and a half and kept quiet because I was chicken sh-t and I guess you can tell I’m a newcomer to politics, but oh well. Thanks Illinoisguy and sorry for the whining. And thanks to everyone on here for your contributions to my political education this past year. Even all you mean and grumpy people! It’s been entertaining and enlightening!
January 31st, 2008 at 11:02 pm
If McCain gets the nomination,I’m going to laugh my butt off in Nov when he doesn’t win a single state including his own AZ. This could be the most entertaining destruction of a nation in history.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
John McCain has blown $42,000,000 and hasn’t received more than 35% in any primary. What a was of good money.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Wow. Obama raises in one month almost as much as all the Republican candidates combined raise in 3 months!

I am baffled by McCain’s numbers. He spent nearly $4 million more in the 4th Qtr than he took in and that take was a mere $6.8 mill after winning NH. And he’s in debt $4.5 million. Has anyone GOP nominee been so weak at this point? He’s basically running for president while on welfare.
February 1st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I SEE YOU ACCIDENTALLY LEFT RON PAUL OFF YOUR LIST YET KEPT GIULIANI ON THE LIST WHO’S NOT EVEN RUNNING ANYMORE!!!
FOR THE RECORD, RON PAUL RAISED $19.95 MILLION IN THE 4TH QUARTER OF 2007.
It’s actually quite amusing how he’s ignored CONSTANTLY by the mainstream media yet is capable of raising so much money no thanks to them or others like this blog, who continue to ignore him.
KUDOS TO THE MOST ETHICAL, HONEST, TRUTHFUL, HIGH INTEGRITY CANDIDATE RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION!
