Another strong showing by Mitt Romney.

  2. ACT Blog Says:

better to have to fight a tough race with a candidate who is right than to win easily with someone who is wrong.

  3. Ben Says:

Another poll showing Huckabee beating Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

  4. DaveG Says:

The crosstabs are intriguing. Each of the GOP candidates does basically the same among Republicans and Democrats when facing Hillary. It’s Independents that make the difference. While Rudy, Huckabee, and Romney garner between 44 and 49 percent of Independents, McCain wins 60 percent of Independents.

  5. RayinNH Says:

Most independents are just liberals who don’t want to be labeled as such. That’s why McCain gets so much “independent” support. That is sooo the case in New Hampshire. I don’t know about Alabama, so unlike others on this site I won’t pretend to speak authoritatively on something I know nothing about.

  6. Jeff Says:

Hillary has a really hard time busting through 48-49% in just about all the head to head matchups. This bodes well for the GOP.

  7. Feltcher Says:

Is it at all possible that the hostage crisis was staged to devert attention from debategate? I think its a little crazy, but unfortunately given the Clintons anything is possible. Someone is bound to uncover a connection between Eisenberg and Clinton.

  8. Big S Says:

If Alabama goes Blue in 2008, there’s no hope for the GOP anywhere.

  9. RayinNH Says:

Feltcher – that was an extremely ignorant comment. I can’t stand the witch either, but accusing the Clintons of working in cahoots with the Clinton News Network to stage an event like that is just beyond reason. It’s about as plausible as Bush blowing up the WTC.

  10. Feltcher Says:

Ray, its ignorant to ask whether something is possible? Is it beyond your narrow comprehension that a paranoid man could be given money and instructions and told it would free him from the voices in his head? I don’t find it nearly as implausible as 9-11.

  11. MarkG Says:

Feltcher, a lot of small towns have their notorious local loons. I don’t think anyone had any control over the ordeal. Think Occam’s razor. We can be grateful that the guy didn’t hurt anyone.

It is rather striking, though, how the media are congratulating Clinton for leadership in handling the affair. Just think of how many hostage situations get daytime news network coverage with not a single politician running his/her mouth about resolving the situation.

Something tells me the same media would be cynically questioning the ulterior motives of any Republican candidate under similar circumstances.

  12. Colin Jones Says:

When the crisis was over Clinton shows her face on TV and thanks the cops and hostages and that is “leadership” and “presidential”? And the lefty punditocracy go gaga over it not surprisingly.

  13. Jeff Says:

12 – same leadership demonstrated by Rudy after 9/11. I guess being elected POTUS is reward for doing your job as mayor.

  14. MarkG Says:

Jeff, that’s rather venal. There was a very good chance that our largest city, home to major media and the world’s financial heart, could have slumped into fearful, uncertain inaction. Rudy’s leadership prevented the disaster from turning into paralysis and a major sense of national malaise — think of what a Ray Nagin might have meant!

  15. Colin Jones Says:

    14. No one with a functioning brain will make the comparison to 9/11. No further comments.

  16. Tano Says:

Why is it that Barack does 5-7% worse than Hillary in each matchup?

  17. Feltcher Says:

Just to stir the conspiracy pot a little more, on MSNBC a reporter said that the police are wondering how Eisenberg got to town because he does not have a car and is flat broke. And is it just serendipity that they guy was looking for healthcare? He should have held a hospital hostage, not a campaign office. Anyway, . . .

    Tano,

I am sure there are several factors, one is of course race, but religion is a factor in Romney’s relatively poor performance against Clinton. Just means our country still has work to do.

  18. Colin Jones Says:

… the calls and e-mails in Iowa grew “utterly intense in the last week” as Republicans urged one another to settle on an anti-Rudy candidate.

    Giuliani foes in GOP panicky
