The Edwards campaign has chosen Halloween to instill fear in the hearts of their Democratic constituents with this e-mail that is sure to elicit a sentiment of schadenfreude in conservative circles:
This nightmare on Pennsylvania Avenue is not as remote as you might think-but you can keep it from coming true.
With just hours to go before our deadline for federal matching funds at midnight tonight, your contribution today will help John Edwards win the Democratic nomination-and scare off the Republicans in 2008!
Polls show that with candidates other than John Edwards at the top of the Democratic ticket, Democrats will have a tough time defending the blue states and winning the swing states we’ll need to take the White House in 2008. We could even lose our majorities in Congress!
The American people are hungry for change. They don’t want a candidate who defends the broken system in Washington. Any candidate who stands with the lobbyists instead of the American people will lose.
But with John Edwards at the top of the ticket, we can turn red states blue, build stronger Democratic majorities in Congress, and help Democrats take back more governorships and state legislatures across the country.
Because John knows that in this election, we need a bold leader-not someone who’s just a little better than the Republicans. John is the only candidate in the race who has won in a red state. And poll after poll show him out-performing all the other Democrats against all of the top Republican candidates-especially in the swing states and red states we’ll need to win to take back the White House.
So don’t wait-click here to help us meet our goal of raising $500,000 online before the deadline strikes at midnight tonight!
Thank you for taking action-and Happy Halloween!
Sincerely,
–Jonathan Prince
Deputy Campaign Manager, John Edwards for President
October 31, 2007PS – I just gave $100 — will you contribute what you can today to help us meet our goal?
October 31st, 2007 at 2:56 pm
Didn’t Edwards send out an e-mail solicitation trying to capitalize on his wife’s cancer?
October 31st, 2007 at 3:24 pm
Ann Coulter was a guest on Chris Matthews’ show and Mrs. Edwards called into the show and asked Coulter to stop insulting her husband and her family. Coulter pointed out that this challenged her right to speech and refused. The Edwards campaign then whipped up a fervor on the left and raised a few mil off of it.
October 31st, 2007 at 3:28 pm
ok, if Rudy pledges to bring Ann Coulter to the White House I’ll become rudybot immediately!
October 31st, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Ann Coulter as Press Secratary…I think that’s the first good idea John Edwards has had!
October 31st, 2007 at 3:35 pm
The Dems are very scared of Rudy, because they know that he is the only GOP candidate that can win.
October 31st, 2007 at 3:41 pm
“Scary Times”??? Seems to me that many of the Romney supporters on this site concur with the above theory.
October 31st, 2007 at 3:41 pm
I’d be quite pleased if that came true.
October 31st, 2007 at 3:41 pm
This was pretty funny actually. That picture of Rudy looks like it was taken in 1938 at the Reichstag.
October 31st, 2007 at 3:43 pm
HAHA
Critics say not everyone can afford plasmas. Rudy: “Tough luck for them”.
I love it.
October 31st, 2007 at 3:48 pm
Why the hell does the paper cost $11.08?
October 31st, 2007 at 3:50 pm
Quite a shot at Hillary. It’s pretty clear that with this, as well as Biden’s tantrum in the debate last night, that the Dems all expect Rudy to tbe the nominee.
October 31st, 2007 at 4:01 pm
“PS – I just gave $100 — will you contribute what you can today to help us meet our goal?”
Anyone else find it funny that even John Edwards’s own Deputy Campaign Manager hasn’t already donated the maximum?
October 31st, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Nusrat,
11/08 election?
October 31st, 2007 at 4:09 pm
But the paper’s date is November 5th.
October 31st, 2007 at 4:10 pm
To be honest, the biggest problem with the ad is that it doesn’t tie Hillary into it.
I’m not the target audience to this ad, I get that, so I understand the whole point of putting patently absurd scenarious in the ad (Jeb Bush for VP, Coulter for WH spokesman), but this ad could just have easily been from the Hillary or Obama camp warning about the consequences of Edwards winning the nomination. Wouldn’t have made sense to do a dummy headline about why Hillary was a bad nominee?
The photoshopped picture of Rudy is funny, I’ll give the Edwards camp that.
October 31st, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Sean,
What they are trying to say is “Edwards is the only person with a chance to beat Rudy”.
It looks like the Republicans aren’t the only ones with a problem with personality cults.
October 31st, 2007 at 4:33 pm
“Anyone else find it funny that even John Edwards’s own Deputy Campaign Manager hasn’t already donated the maximum?“
Tex,
You don’t build 30,000 sq. ft. mansions by paying for campaign manager lots of money.
October 31st, 2007 at 4:39 pm
For people who think Rudy is going to get the nomination, Your Crazy!!! Mitt Romney has the nomination sealed up. I am not voting for Romney in the primary but he has it wrapped up. I think Romney will select Mike Huckabee or Haley Barbour as his VP candidate.
October 31st, 2007 at 5:04 pm
marK I get what they were trying to say, but you have to admit they didn’t do a very good job of actually saying it. Maybe a dummy headline like “Voters, Craving Change, Vote to keep Republicans in Power — Desire to break Clinton/Bush hold on executive office key issue for voters, exit polls say” — could have conveyed the message.
October 31st, 2007 at 5:24 pm
Kemp,
Haley Barbour would indeed be a strong selection for VP, but he might have to reverse course a bit on his support for gambling to appeal to some Values Voters.
October 31st, 2007 at 5:29 pm
I honestly believe that John Edwards has some bizarre S&M affection toward Ann Coulter. He loves all the verbal and intellectual whippings she hands out to him, and pays her back with this lavish attention. “Here you are, my mistress!” “You faggot!”
October 31st, 2007 at 5:31 pm
Kemp,
I am a died-in-the-wool Romney guy, but there is no way people who think Rudy will get the nod are crazy. Ron Paul supporters, most definitely. Duncan Hunter supporters (I assume there are some, right?), yes. Giuliani supporters, uh-uh. He is sitting way to good.
Rudy and Mitt have the best chances of anyone on the GOP side. If Mitt’s early state strategy works and his new-found momentum washes away Rudy’s Super-Tuesday strategy, he wins. If Rudy’s Super-Tuesday strategy cancels out the momentum of Mitt’s early state strategy, he wins.
Right now, about the only thing the second tier (McCain/Thompson/Huckabee) can do is keep Romney from getting it. Which means Rudy wins.
So no, they aren’t crazy.
October 31st, 2007 at 5:43 pm
I actually think a Rudy-Jeb ticket might be the most winningest scenario. Rudy is already compared to Bush so he might as well embrace Jeb to shore up the base and deliver Florida.
October 31st, 2007 at 5:58 pm
A quick google search got me a plasma tv for $900, and I’m sure better is out there. If that’s all health care would cost under Rudy, I’m cool with that.
It said Vol. CLVIII, or 158. 158 years before 2008 was 1850. If Edwards is implying that the GOP was the “scary party” back then…?
October 31st, 2007 at 6:01 pm
“Right now, about the only thing the second tier (McCain/Thompson/Huckabee) can do is keep Romney from getting it. Which means Rudy wins. So no, they aren’t crazy.”
McCain is the only thing in Rudy’s way!
“I actually think a Rudy-Jeb ticket might be the most winningest scenario. Rudy is already compared to Bush so he might as well embrace Jeb to shore up the base and deliver Florida.”
Are you f###ing insane?! Putting a Bush on the ticket?!
October 31st, 2007 at 6:01 pm
Carson,
The country has Bush-fatigue at the moment. Jeb Bush is a truly viable candidate. I like him a great deal more than his brother. But putting him on the ticket in 2008 would be a disaster. Now maybe in 2012 if the GOP loses the White House, or if the GOP incumbent wishes to change his VP. But not 2008.
Life is not fair. Sorry.

I’m not in rudy’s column(but i’d be perfectly happy if he was the nominee), but this ad makes me actually want to vote for the guy.
October 31st, 2007 at 6:48 pm
Nothing makes me want to vote for Rudy. He is liberal scum!! I really think the winning ticket and the acual ticket will be Romney-Huckabee. I hate to say that because I really dont like Romney all that much. His strategy of early states will pay off.
Just a prediction don’t grill me…please
Iowa- Romney, unless Huckabee pulls a fast one.
New Hampshire- Romney-especially after the Judd Gregg endorsement.
Nevada- Romney
South Carolina- Here is were it gets tricky. If Mitt picks up steam he could win South Carolina. If not I think Thompson could win SC.
Anyway, sorry to bore all. Trust me Iam not a Romney guy. I really think he will win though. As long as its not Rudy, I will be content. I do think the nominee has to add Huckabee to the ticket. I would say Brownback would be the best shot at the Christian Value Voters but man is he boring.
October 31st, 2007 at 6:52 pm
Who ever wrote that Jeb Bush would make a good VP has really lost their mind. If any voters see a Bush on the ballot thats it for the Republicans in 2008.
October 31st, 2007 at 6:54 pm
kemp, if Rudy is liberal scum, then what was that war going on through the 90s, that was being waged against the NYT and NYC liberal establishment? What were they so outraged about? Any ideas?
Why what other liberals are the mafia and terrorists putting out death threats against? They do that to liberals a lot, ya know.
October 31st, 2007 at 7:25 pm
Scum, kemp?
As for your ‘dislike’ of Romney, me thinks thou doth protest too much
October 31st, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Hey Mr. T,
Cool Name…Yeah.
Me think you are neocon scum just like Rudy and Romney. Why don’t we waste another 2 trillion on a war with Iran. That would benefit Israel…I mean the United States.
Scum, Mr. T?
Yes, you are sir.
October 31st, 2007 at 8:12 pm
I think I’m gonna have to go with Kemp on this one…sorry Mr. T, if I were you, I would brush up on my debating skills.
October 31st, 2007 at 11:17 pm
Oh, God! Who invited the Ron Paul trolls!?
November 1st, 2007 at 10:00 am
Rudy was a complete failure as mayor of NYC until his ‘lucky day’ (9/11). It made him a ‘hero’.
The man had an approval rating of 28% in 2000, which he richly deserved.
Why anyone would vote for this failure defies logic and reason.
