Former NYC Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik is feeling the heat. This as of this morning:
Bernard Kerik’s legal nightmare is about to get worse, with federal prosecutors expected to file charges against the former police commissioner that will likely include allegations of bribery, tax fraud and obstruction of justice, the Daily News has learned.
Will this have any impact on his former boss Rudy Giuliani? The Daily News thinks so:
The indictment will have direct implications for Giuliani, the sources said.
For one, another Giuliani commissioner and a top inspector general during Giuliani’s years as mayor will be called as witnesses to describe the secret meeting in Tribeca.
…
Giuliani has extensive ties to Kerik, promoting him to correction commissioner, then to police commissioner. Giuliani later also hired him at his firm, Giuliani Partners, and recommended him to President Bush for the job of Homeland Security secretary.
The relationship soured in December 2004 when Kerik withdrew from consideration for the Homeland Security job and a torrent of accusations of wrongdoing poured forth.
To be fair, Rudy has handled this very well. He’s admitted that the nomination was a mistake and there is no direct implication Rudy’s efforts in Kerik’s aleged illegalities. Still, skeletons in the closet are not pretty… but first glances can be deceiving.
Romney has had his share of associates get banged up for legal and ethical problems and I can tell you from personal experience that some of these issues are just trumped-up silliness. I don’t think that Kerik is any type of victim here… but the criminal-candidate connections are usually way overplayed.

Mark my words, the Mittster will find a way to use this against Giuliani.

Rudy was indeed snookered by this sleezebag (Kerik).

As I posted earlier,
I’ll judge Rudy by the results of his NYC administration. Which drawf the results of Mitt’s MA admin.
I like the fact that he gives a chance to non-nonsense achievers (Kerik had an amazing record) rather than stuffed suits. If one turns out to be a problem, you replace him. Meanwhile the similar appointments are getting stellar RESULTS!

I know, just some levity

BTW, Metro do you live in NYC? You seem to know as much about Rudy as I do. I am from Brooklyn Heights.

Oh, and Justin, regarding the Daily News, remember that this paper is as liberal and against Rudy as The NY Times.
October 12th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
I figured it was. The only reason I knew was from Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” he doesn’t mention the post but he mentions NYT and the Daily News. From that moment. I knew it had to be a liberal rag

Joe M: Don’t live in NYC, but visit. Read a lot about Rudy.
New CA poll:
Rudy 34
Jmac 17
Mitt 11
Fred 7

There’s certainly an effort from some quarters to overdo the guilt-by-association ploy, rather than asking whether the candidate was, as they say, “directly involved in any improprieties.”

Galt, yes, the site is slow today.

thanks.

Didn’t Rudy stand by Kerik and recommend him as head of homeland security even after many (most?) of these charges were made public?
what gives?
October 12th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
sampo, no.

There were questions, but the extent of the charges were not known until later.

This doesn’t hurt Rudy too much in my mind because he admits he made a mistake, plus
he can’t be responsible for everything one of his subordinates do. You never
know what events will transpire to make someone turn to evil.
I wish he would admit that he made a mistake to encourage illegal immigrants
in his city or to get rid of the line item veto without trying to put something
in its place. I think he actually feels this way, but he can’t admit it
becuase he has to act like the tough guy.

Justin – - regarding NY newspapers, the only one that is tolerable is The New York Post. It is a bit sensational, but it always stands by conservative values and always tells it like it is.
October 13th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Calling the messenger liberal does nothing to exonerate the subject. Being tough on criminals means nothing when you cherry-pick who you think the criminals are. Typical GOP BS.
October 13th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
And, y the by, if you actually think the NY Post is in any way credible, well, there’s a reason it’s called tabloid journalism. The media is not liberal, it’s wimpy, otherwise GW, Dicky C, Rummy and, yes, Rudy would all be behind bars right now. I expect politicians to be hypocritical to some extent, but c’mon, the GOP are so transparent the only ones who can’t see through them are wearing GOP beer goggles – you know, the specs that make Rudy G. look attractive.
