And no, I’m not talking about that crossroads…
According to Marc Ambinder, Brownback spent over $600,000 on the Ames Straw Poll, only to be bested by Mike Huckabee. He finished last quarter with less than $500,000 cash on hand, which means he basically bankrupted his campaign going for broke at Ames.
According to Jonathan Martin at the Politico:
After putting in the effort he did today and in the weeks leading up to Ames, Brownback’s third place finish will prompt questions about his ability to carry on in the race.
So what does Brownback do? Press on in his now bankrupt campaign for President? Or throw in the towel and go back to being a good conservative Senator from Kansas?

I say Brownback goes forward. It’s not about money, it’s about principle. And he’s going to have to get coverage for placing above Rudy, Fred!, and Paul (the other three Beatles).

Let’s not forget McCain. Wait. Let’s do forget McCain.

Oh, wow! I didn’t realize he bankrupted his campaign over this.
Though I think that Psycheout is right — Sam doesn’t think he can win. He just wants to spread a so-con message.

Psycheout,
Sorry, but is about money. You can’t run a campaign with no money in the bank. Unless Brownback has a big garden to feed all his staffers and solar powered cars- Then, it just might work.
People need to remember this is big. Brownback had a second campaign office in Ames. Every Brownbacker was telling us be prepared for a Sam blowout. Only the blowout was the campaign itself. The guy placed all bets on Ames and lost to Huckabee, who plays a bass. Now if Huckabee was a lead guitarist, different story. But, the Bass?

What, Brownback didnt win? I was told by Bryan that he would win and by a large margin. What happened. I guess the lesson from this is that it doesnt pay to go negative as he has done. I hope he drops out as he should. He has become my least favorite candidate thus far. Sadly I think that Hunter and Tommy T will also drop out. I expect that with 41 very committed followers today at Ames, John Cox will soon take off and give the big 3 a real fight. His fundraising numbers could double to $3580 by next quarter. Watch out.

If Brownback goes, who gets his tens of supporters? My guess is many might head to Huck since they are similiar in some ways. That could give Huck some added steam, but he too has raised very little. The question now is, with 2nd place, can Huck crack the top tier with the big three. Could he peel off some of Fred’s very soft support since his numbers have been sliding. As a Mitt guy, Huck kind of scares me because if he were viable, he could steal some of the evangelicals that have supported Mitt. He has an in with the values voters that Mitt has tried wooing.

LOL! Thanks for the laugh, Jason.
Brownback should just do us all a favor and quit. He has no chance of winning.

Ames mirrors the caucus in some ways because its about organization, money, and getting out the vote. I cant say that I have seen any of those things with Huck yet. That said, I am impressed he did so well today.

If Brownback backs out Huckabee is my man

I’m sure glad I’m not writing at Blogs 4 Cox at this point!

But your guy still blows!

The best part about this was that Brownback came in third to Huckabee who spent no money. Impressive.
I like Huckabee but I doubt he will become viable just because of this. He is just horrible at campaigning and raising money. My guess is he will ride the wave, gain some support, but still won’t manage to garner the financial support he needs to seriously compete.
the money numbers for the third quarter are going to be extremly important.
i just hope a bunch of them drop out already.

Brownback is the one significant candidate in the GOP race who has diminished himself by the tenor and substance of his campaign. He may be the only person who doesn’t realize he is done in this campaign. The question is, has he so diminished himself that even his Senate seat is in danger?
August 12th, 2007 at 10:29 am
I don’t know, I think Tommy Thompson has diminished himself as well. He could have cashed in on any office in Wisconsin he wished (especially that 2006 Senate seat… THANKS, Tommy), but instead chose to bring his formidible lack of charisma to bear on the presidential field. Hopefully this hasn’t lowered his God-like status in Wisconsin too much.

He need to drop out.
August 13th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Hey marksal! Guess what? Brownback took term-limits. And his seat? Yeah 150 came up from kansas to help us out at the straw poll. Don’t think that his seat is in that much trouble.

were any of you there? Did you talk to any romney staffers? did you ask them who they voted for? You would never guess.
