Sully’s not for Romney

So says Andrew in his latest column.

Sullivan, of course, opposes Romney’s social stances.? This isn’t particularly surprising, as Andrew’s a social libertarian, and Romney’s not.? What?is a bit interesting about Sullivan’s column are Andrew’s kind words towards Romney on fiscal matters.? Sully thinks Romney has been quite competent w/r/t fiscal policy and seems to imply that a more secular version of Mitt would be a candidate he could support.

I’ve often wondered whether there’s any candidate in the ’08 field who could “get the band back together,” so to speak; that is to say, a candidate who would satisfy both the Bush Republicans of recent years, as well as the maverick conservatives like Andrew who feel the GOP has gone too far right on culture and too far left on fiscal matters.? Romney is certainly a favorite of the Bush types, but I can’t see Sullivan supporting him due to his aggressive stance against gay marriage.? And McCain would almost certainly garner Sullivan’s endorsement, but can anyone imagine Hannity, Hewitt, etc., endorsing McCain wholeheartedly, even if Hillary were the only alternative?? A Rudy candidacy, on the other hand, seems quite?amenable to?both sides.? Could Giuliani bring the Reagan coalition together one last time?

Sullivan called Romney the “christianist” candidate…tee-hee. :P

It’s interesting watching Sully going after Romney’s Mormon faith.

Giuliani is a Reagan Democrat. If you look at the parts of NYC he did well in, it was the white, working class portions — Giuliani was not an upper east sider. I absolutely think he’s the best bet to bring back the Reagan coalition. Fiscallly conservative, hawkish, optimistic. True he is pro-choice and pro-gay-rights, but on a number of issues, such as shutting down an obscene art exhibition, he act like the gipper. And quite frankly, I’m not sure the gipper was much different in private on gay rights and abortion.
