Hillary Clinton “Scariest” Presidential Candidate

Although this blog is mostly devoted to covering the Republican candidates for 2008, I just could not resist posting this poll:

Days after a Gallup poll showed Hillary Clinton to enjoy a wide lead over other 2008 Democratic presidential nomination hopefuls, a new Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll reveals voters consider her the most “frightening” candidate by greater than a two-to-one margin.

The very last question – No. 52 – was: “Which one of the following potential candidates for president frightens you the most? 1. Hillary Clinton, 2. Rudy Giuliani, 3. Al Gore, 4. John McCain, 5. All, 6. None, 7. Don’t know.”

Some 36 percent of all voters found Clinton the most frightening, with Giuilani placing a distant second in the fear category with 17 percent of all voters. Gore placed third at 15 percent with McCain in last place with a mere 11 percent fear factor.

Where Presidential Hopes go to Die

I’m talking about the U.S. Senate of course.

A grand total of two Senators (Warren Harding and JFK) have been elected President from its hallowed halls.

Being a Senator requires that a person make a very clear stand (yea or nea) on the most controversial issues of the day. The longer the time of service in the Senate, the longer the paper trail that an opposing candidate can comb through for ammunition in a presidential campaign.

Yahoo News has a good article on the Senatorial tightrope currently being walked by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

John McCain’s people may want to have “The Straight Talker” peruse it the next time he is considering Immigration or Anti-Torture legislation.

Polls may currently show that the 2008 race will pit Senator vs. Senator, but history just doesn’t bear this out.

Poll Alert: Strategic Vision Pennsylvania

Strategic Vision PA, June 9-11 2006 (Republicans only):

Who is your Choice for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008?

Rudy Giuliani 39%
John McCain 28%
Newt Gingrich 5%
Mitt Romney 5%
Bill Frist 3%
George Allen 3%
Rick Santorum 1%
George Pataki 1%
Chuck Hagel 1%
Undecided 14%

McCain jumps to 41% (with 25% undecided) if Giuliani is left out of the poll. Second place goes to Mitt Romney at 9%.

This results of this poll mirror Gallup’s last 2008 poll which showed Giuliani with a 29% to 24% lead over McCain.

Polls this far out may measure little other than name recognition. But we can clearly see that when asked to think about it, Republicans overwhelmingly line up behind the “Big Two” of Giuliani and McCain.

Hiring Roundup: Huckabee & Pataki Make Moves

A couple of interesting Iowa hires for Team’s Huckabee and Pataki.

Governor Huckabee has signed former Courier political writer Eric Woolsen as a regional coordinator for his “Hope for America” PAC. Woolson’s region will encompass Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Pataki’s 21st Century Freedom PAC announced several impressive Iowa hires, including former Iowa State Senate GOP leader Stewart Iverson, Iowans for Tax Relief Executive Vice President Ed Failor Jr., and Benton County Republican Chairman Loras Schulte.

Governor Pataki’s Friday June 16th visit to Iowa will mark his sixth visit to the critcal state.

Update: Apparently there has been some fallout among Iowa GOPer’s.

From Hotline:

We hear that Failor’s public move has angered many non-affiliated Iowans who wondered why he’d telegraph his presidential sentiments so early. And Schutle made it clear that he’s not willing to be seen as a Pataki endorser.

In a letter sent to friends and allies and obtained by the Hotline, Schutle explained that he has not endorsed Pataki for president in ’08.

From the e-mail:

“I have had numerous emails about press reports regarding my involvement with Governor George Pataki’s 21st Century Freedom PAC, so I’ve decided to do this mass email to clarify any misconceptions. First, my involvement in the PAC is not an endorsement of the Governor for President but it does reflect how seriously I take the job of helping to fund our 2006 candidates for the State House, particularly our new conservative first-time candidates that I and other conservatives have spent more than a year recruiting.”
